Appearance
(I swear I'm actually picking away at this - work's just been crazy.)
At six fulms and four ilms in height, Arcian cuts an imposing figure even by the standards of her fellow Highlanders. While not able to compete with a Roegadyn for sheer size, she has the build of an athlete, all broad shoulders and well-defined muscle. Hers is a strong-featured face, with a slightly square jawline, generous lips, and a nose that has obviously been broken at least once. Shaggy blonde hair frames her face, usually tousled by wind and swift movement. Her eyes are frosty blue, like glacier ice, though not preternaturally piercing as the color might suggest. She is somewhat androgynous in appearance, and has been mistaken for a young man more often than she'd care to admit.

For the most part, she eschews armor, barring light leathers. Arcian's preferences run to loose shirts and trousers, favoring mobility over protection. Though not overly concerned with appearances, she does make one concession to vanity; her earlobes are pierced, usually with a pair of silver studs or small rings.

History
The youngest daughter of Egilhard Martell, an eccentric botanist, and Sieglinde Bergfalk, a former Fist of Rhalgr drummed out of the order for her myriad dalliances and generally atrocious behavior, Arcian was born on the 12th Sun of the 6th Umbral Moon, 1553. During Theodorac's crusade against the Fists, Sieglinde managed to shield her children and husband from persecution for a time by dint of her status as a disgrace. The regime had taken notice of her, however, and by the time of the Garlean invasion preparations were being made for her arrest and eventual execution. Though the occupation was fortunately timed in that regard, any relief was short-lived as the Imperial forces made their penchant for subjugation and cultural homogenization known. Unwilling to see their rights and heritage trampled underfoot, the Martells joined the great horde of refugees migrating away from Garlean rule, embarking upon the long trek away from Gyr Abania. Arcian is both old enough to remember her family's flight from Ala Mhigo and old enough to resent being compelled to flee in the first place.

Her family first settled in Gridania, in order that Egilhard might have a suitable environment for his research. While her father pursued his studies on the nature of seedkin, her mother acted as his bodyguard, with their four daughters trailing in their wake. Consequently she absorbed more knowledge of the field of botany than she ever cared to know. Over the years, Egilhard embroiled his family in some rather sticky situations; one memorable incident involved running from a morbol not particularly inclined to allow anyone to examine it. Spurred by the prospect of not having her children mauled by an enraged plant creature, Sieglinde took it upon herself to instruct her brood in the fine art of beating their enemies to a pulp. Arcian proved a dedicated pupil, though her sisters soon opted for other forms of martial education.

Having had entirely enough of Egilhard mucking about in the forest, Sieglinde made the decision to move her family to Limsa Lominsa in hopes of a less chaotic upbringing for her daughters. Arcian soon acclimated herself to dockside life; for several cycles, she served as a courier and messenger between certain captains and the various merchants that they supplied (some of them may or may not have been of a distinctly piratical bent). As she grew, she put her skills in pugilism to use in more than a few prizefighting matches, having a moderately successful career in the ring.

With the coming of the Calamity, the already unfriendly prevailing attitude towards refugees hardened significantly, and the Martells found themselves facing growing hostility from their neighbours. In the face of such resentment, Arcian opted to travel, rather than stay and endure the grumbling behind her back (and occasionally directly to her face). A few days of inquiry found a caravan in need of armed escort, and she quickly signed on. For a while, she haunted the various taverns of Ul'dah in hopes of finding work.

After a fruitless moon of hunting for employment, Arcian encountered Brynhilde Wulf, who offered compensation in return for aiding her in a search for some mysteriously vanished refugees. She found herself fitting in well with Bryn's compatriots despite the chaos that followed, and soon signed on as a member of their free company.

Personality
Arcian is blessed with an affable nature and general lack of aggression, despite her willingness to punch people in the face in exchange for gil. The various hardships of her youth seem to have slid off her back like water; she is fairly slow to anger unless actively taunted or faced with someone harboring Garlean sympathies. Despite her friendliness towards most, she does not do well in crowds, as she feels boxed in and outnumbered; as a consequence, she tends to hang back and allow people to come to her. While this approach has served her well enough, she does find herself desirous of more and closer relationships, especially with other women. Unfortunately, her sexuality is not something she's entirely comfortable with. Upon finding herself becoming flirtatious or amorous, she tends to hastily backpedal, not wishing to make whoever she might be conversing with uncomfortable.

In addition to her insecurities, she possesses a stubborn streak a malm wide and twice as deep; for good or ill, once she sets her mind on something, it is difficult to convince her otherwise.

Despite her various flaws and foibles, Arcian is capable of being a dedicated ally and loyal friend. Once earned, her allegiance is not easily broken, barring exceptional circumstances. Though no one has exploited that particular blindness quite yet, it's a glaring weakness in her otherwise fairly sensible outlook. While she's conscious of her unfortunate doggedness, she has made no efforts to combat such tendencies, and will likely not unless something drastic occurs.

Relations and Affiliations
Brave Horizon: A chance meeting during a hunt for missing refugees grew into a friendship, and then into something more following the deaths of Brave's parents. Arcian's first declaration of her feelings was awkward and ill-timed, but despite her fumbling, the two have settled into something resembling a stable relationship. Though initially quick with a stumbling, red-faced denial of any involvement, Arcian has gradually become more at ease with her current partner, and is no longer reluctant to be affectionate or protective where others might see. Brave being injured or endangered is one of the few ways to easily spur her to anger.

X'Septha Dhen: While Septh's abrasive nature has a tendency to drive most away, Arcian takes her barbs in stride. The thaumaturge has her own vulnerabilities beneath her rude, hostile exterior, and Arcian is not so blind as to miss that fact. Theirs is a fast friendship, though Septh may not admit it while not thoroughly drunk.

Brynhilde Wulf: Arcian has a good deal of respect for Bryn as a leader, a warrior, and a fellow 'Mhigan. However, they do not quite see eye-to-eye on the matter of Garleans in general; Arcian's simmering, unfocused hatred contrasts sharply with Bryn's more nuanced perspective on the citizens of the Empire. In addition, Arcian was also quick to presume that Bryn had never experienced the persecution familiar to younger refugees in the wake of the Garlean invasion, though she was swiftly corrected on that point. Regardless, the two of them seem to be on good terms.

Bertrand Irons: Bert and Arcian get along remarkably well. Despite his alarming penchant for explosives, Bert's patience and easygoing nature mesh well with Arcian's friendly personality, and the two of them have shared many an evening conversation over whatever dish Bert may have cooked up. She views him as a good friend and an asset to their free company.

Kyraeth Vale: Although their relationship was strictly business at first, as Kyraeth had hired Arcian and a few others to serve as caravan guards in the face of potential banditry, the formality between employer and employee has eased off into an actual friendship. Arcian, being somewhat less than intensively educated, has sucked up what knowledge the Midlander has shared like a sponge. In turn, she's offered to extend what she knows of the more practical skills that Kyraeth might be lacking. They may not speak relatively often, but there is nothing but goodwill for Kyraeth from Arcian's end.

Family: There is little strife between the Martells. Egilhard and Sieglinde have been decent, dependable parents to all of their daughters, and three out of four have warm relationships with them. Solveig, the third eldest, is the sole outlier; she does not speak to her family, especially not to Arcian. There is hard history between the two of them.

Other: Though her allegiance is not overt, Arcian has quietly supported the Ala Mhigan resistance since early adulthood.

Other Notes
In a misguided attempt to connect with his youngest daughter, Egilhard captured a small mandragora and presented it to Arcian as a gift. Though the seedkin is not hostile or aggressive, she's not entirely certain what to do with it; it follows at her heels like a hound, frequently getting underfoot.

Though she inherited her father's voracious appetite for knowledge, Arcian's consumption of scholarly material has been limited by her lack of anything other than a general education.

She's also truly, genuinely terrible at any game with an element of chance. The dice (or cards) are not her friend.
