Background

Scarlet is an alchemist from Ul’Dah pursuing research towards reversing the process of aging and attaining eternal life. She is a Midlander in her early 40s, but looks surprisingly young for her age through the use of alchemical cosmetics developed through the course of her research.

Since a very young age, the bulk of Scarlet's life was spent conducting research in the Alchemist's guild. Scarlet had always been an eccentric character, but her eccentricities were tolerated in light of her developing talent for the discipline. Her frustration with the pace of her research over the years only exacerbated her arrogance and inability to collaborate. As her research took ever more extreme turns, the guild could no longer tolerate this drain their resources, reputation, and morale, and had Scarlet ousted from the guild.

Without the resources of the guild to rely on, Scarlet's research hit a standstill. She quickly found the means to sustain herself through hawking alchemical products on the streets of Ul'Dah. She started by selling snake oils and cosmetics to the leisure class, but eventually found her way to the illicit goods markets, providing poisons and recreational narcotics. While financially successful enough to survive, this did not provide the capital necessary to continue her research.

Seeking more stable employment to ensure time to commit to her research, she took on work as a chemist with the Black Garden Company.

Personality

Scarlet is generally amicable, if a bit blunt and sarcastic. Given her alchemical talent and devotion to her research, she can be very passionate when discussing topics in her field but gets very defensive at even the slightest criticism. While she makes good company, she has an aura of aloofness, arrogance, and insincerity that make it difficult to get to know her.

Scarlet's discomfort with mortality makes it difficult for her to get too invested in anyone or anything out of fear of losing it. Her mindset is that getting attached is a luxury in life that will have to wait until after her research is complete. In the mean time, however, she remains envious of those who are able to enjoy their life without worrying about how it ends. This makes her prone to mood swings, where she easily loses her temper or slips into bouts of melancholy.

Despite her preoccupation with her health, this mental conflict has caused Scarlet to pick up a few unhealthy indulgences, primarily drinking and gambling.
