Character

♦ Beliefs and Religion

Menelwen's father went to great lengths to teach his little girl about the twelve gods. He would promise her that they would look out for her, keeping her safe if, for some reason, he was not around. She used to believe his words, for whenever something would happen, he would be at her side within a few heartbeats. However, when the strong Elezen tragically passed away, Menelwen quickly found her faith in the Twelve shaken. Why would they let someone who praised them so, who believed in them, fall as he did? With every passing event, no matter how large or small, she began to question how much influence the gods, if they did exist, actually held. How powerful were they, if they existed at all?

Logic and reason snuck its way into her mind as Menelwen grew into a young woman. She questions how strong her faith is to this day, though in the end, she always results to relying on her own strength to prevail.

♦ Appearance

♦ Behaviour

Never judge a book by its cover. You never know if a blade is hidden within the folds..

On the surface, Menelwen appears to be a strong, caring, independent woman who will go to great lengths to aid another however she can. It's not rare for her to slip a piece of gil underneath a warm loaf of bread as she serves tables at the different taverns she works at -- it coming straight out of her own pocket, of course. It's earned the nickname 'Gil Bread', and it is definitely not on the menu. She knows when someone is trying to trick her into getting free coin, and though she will serve them, she keeps her coin to herself.

Within the pages however...Menelwen is scared. Her calm, pleasant facade flickers from time to time as she works. Her heterochromia eyes glaze over as her gaze snaps across the room, jumping from the doorway and windows to the different tables. The break in her routine is quickly masked, however to the sharp eye of those who know her, it would be obvious that she did not feel as safe as she acted.

History

Childhood/Adolescence

While most families would have rejoiced at the birth of a healthy newborn girl, Menelwen's family was not one to offer her such a warm welcome into Eorzea. Rohisse, her beloved father, loved his first born with all the love a father could give, however his family did not. Rohisse's parents were disgusted with Menelwen's mother, believing that the babe's gender was a sign from the gods that Oriabelle could not be trusted to provide for their son and tend to his every need. Despite their disapproval, Rohisse stood by his wife's side, vowing to take care of both her and their newborn daughter. Distraught and hungry for her husband's family to adore and cherish her, Oriabelle made her own vow, promising to her husband and his family that she would bear him a son even if it killed her.

Two years later, Menelwen would earn the responsibility of an older sister, one who would be cared by her father alone. Oriabelle had succumbed not to the difficulties of child birth, but to the demons that plagued her mind. Fear had torn at her mind, ridding her of her senses and the last of her humanity. Thinking that she would bear not a son, but another daughter, eventually led the woman to take her own life. Rohisse returned home one day to find his wife, a kitchen knife plunged deep into her chest, and the life gone from her eyes. Time had not been on her fathers side, though with the aid of the village's conjurer, they were able to succesfully remove a healthy, screaming, baby boy from Oriabelle's lifeless corpse. Blaming his family for both pushing his wife over the edge and causing her to take her own life, Rohisse packed what belongings he could fit into a cart, sold the small home to a farmer, and took both Menelwen and her younger brother out of the village and onto the road.

Traveling can be hard on on a grown man at times, but it is even harder on children. Rohisse learned this the hard way, with both Menelwen and his newborn son soon growing ill during their journey. This was not the first time the man had learned a lesson the hard way, and as time went on, it would prove that it would not be the last.

A Working Life

Being just two years older than her younger brother, it took a few years before Menelwen was properly capable of helping her father take care of both herself and her Calthius. At the rough age of thirteen, Menelwen began to see to everything that her brother could possibly need to both sustain life, and to keep him from breaking anything within their small home. With their mother unfortunately unable to be a part of their lives and take on her roll in the family, Menelwen quickly found herself both willingly and wanting to fill the void in their family's heart. The young girl found herself waking up at the crack of dawn every morning to prepare breakfast, coax the flames within their tiny fireplace back to life, tidy up the small cottage, and head to the market to fetch food for the day.

Strong ears. Like other Elezen, she is able to hear the softest squeak from a field mouse several malms away.

Will only drink tea if she prepared it herself.
Hates ships. She'll only go on one if it is absolutely necessary, and even then, well....good luck.

Standard Equipment

A dagger strapped to her left thigh.
A pouch on her left thigh holding an assortment of vials, some empty, some not.
A cloth pouch holding her gil hangs from her neck.
A brown leather choker.

Weakness

Her eyesight is not what it used to be. Complications from a past injury, and injuries from a recent squabble, have made the Elezen's left eye near useless.

Relationships

Friends

Mihro Tethra - Even though the two share a relationship of both friendship and business partners, the man is one of the most stubborn, hard headed Miqo'te that Menelwen has ever met. Always sure of himself, his word is final, which makes it hard to get expansions for the Bastards Honor tavern done. Or rather, it used to be hard. As of seven moons ago, the man left the tavern in charge of the Elezen, which has always puzzled and concerned the woman. The man had lost one of the things that tied him to the world outside of Coerthas, and with the second thing now given up...Menel wonders if she will ever see the man again.
Hachi Ten'ahn – The woman has proven her skill and spirit time and time again in the short time Menelwen has known her. A sharp, keen eye, the Miqo'te is quick to spot danger, or the nearest glass of ice cold milk. Up until recently, the two had not seen nor spoken in several moons. With the Miqo'tes return, Menel is hopeful that the two can strengthen their friendship.
Grey Everheart - Though as stubborn as a Tarbh Uisge, the Hyur has proven himself to be loyal to whatever cause he pushes himself towards. The two have shared a drink here and there, though that is normally due to Menelwen tending to some sort of bruise or cut the man earned from a recent scuffle. –
Khy'zen Vashai [Deceased] - The two were not necessarily as close as two peas in a pod, but the man was a good and dear friend to Menelwen all the same. So when she heard of his passing, she could scare believe that the man she had shared drinks, laughs, and fair times with was...gone. It has been several moons since his death, and to this day, Menel still mourns, knowing she could have more to help the man if only he had asked.
Excen Validus - The two met with both unusual and solemn circumstances, and though they are both civil to one another, it is sometimes difficult for Menel to get a read on the Hyur. Regardless of his quite disposition, the woman trusts the man, and hopes that the wounds he carries on his soul will some day heal.
Nivaar Swann - The two met when the gladiator happened upon her small bar, the Bastard's Honor, in La Noscea. The man is a pleasure to talk to, and whenever he comes to visit she always has a plate of steamed carrots waiting for him. –
Nylesa Tou - Of all of her friends, this firecracker is quite possibly Menelwen's best friend. The Hyur has proven time and time again to spice up an otherwise quiet evening, and though her love of sandwiches and shakes will one day empty out the Bastard's Honor stock, Menel is happy to have such a great friend. They've hit their own rough patches, but time and time again, they've been able to climb out of the hole, brush one another off, and make up at the end of it all.
Hiro Ayami - The two met though Nylesa and the Piquant Pumpkin Cafe Enterprise. Menelwen has gone to seek his counsel on several different issues, ranging from how to gently put down suitors to what she should do about Nylesa eating her sandwich supplies overnight. They share a healthy relationship in that matter, as the man himself has welcome counsel from Menelwen as well, his own matters ranging from the strange to the not so obvious. Time and time again, the man has proved himself both a promising and trusting friend, and Menelwen is glad to have met him.
Rhysati Lhea - If a word had to be picked to describe the Hyur, intriguing would be best suited. Level headed and blunt, Menelwen has never had to guess what this particular woman is thinking. Knowing so many who hide their true desires and feelings however, it is refreshing to know that if the Elezen ever needs a straight forward opinion on something, Rhysati is the woman to talk to. Also, she makes some damn amazing cookies.
Deverell Jinx - With a warm, playful smile almost always on the mans face, the man is a pure pleasure to be around. The man rarely hides his true emotions, however when he does, it is never for long. He has come to Menelwen many, many times for both comfort and counsel, and the Elezen is glad to know that the man has so much trust in her. With every conversation and every moment spent with one another, Menel hopes that their bond will only grow stronger.
Dresden Voltaire - Many experiences were made at the Piquant Pumpkin Cafe Enterprise, and one such experience introduced her to the fine fellow Dresden is. The man is half jester, half stone, as his mood can vary on a day to day basis. Knowing the reasons behind the mans different moods, Menelwen never presses while in public company, as she knows that, when the man is ready, he will seek her out to speak of his thoughts. The two have made many memories together, some more memorable than others, but it would be wrong to say that any of them were unimportant.
💑 Daghbheri Himalspyr - Takes his drink and taps the top of Menelwen's drink with the bottom of his. "I'm not above ya." He taps the bottom of her glass with the top of his. "I'm not beneath ya." He touches the glasses side by side. "I'm right beside ya." Dogberry is, quite possibly, the only person she feels completely at ease with while drinking. This of course, has made the Roegadyn her only drinking buddy. The two met many moons ago, but they have recently been spending more time together, be it facing primals with their misfit band of brothers and sisters, or having a playful conversation where ever the sea takes them.
E'khei Balduin - When a relationship between two individuals starts out with talk of a Roegadyn being squished by a magitech, well, you can never be sure if you'll see the other again. Thankfully, in the case with E'khei, Menel's friends did not scare the Miqo'te off and the two have been able to feed their ever growing friendship.

Family

Oriabelle [Or-re-a-bell] Veara - Menelwen's Mother. [Deceased] – Menelwen and her mother would have had a wonderful, loving relationship if, and only if, Menel had been born after her younger brother, Calthius. Bearing a girl as her first child, Rohisse's family grew to despise Menelwen's mother. It was not until Calthius was born that their displeasure was soothed, but by then it was too late.
Rohisse [Row-highs] Veara - Menelwen's Father. [Deceased] – Despite his parents displeasure of Menelwen's gender, Rohisse soon found his daughter wrapped around his finger. He cared for her as any father should, looking after her and teaching her all that he could as she grew.
Calthius [Cal-thee-us] Veara - Menelwen's Brother. [Unknown] – How the two got along all depended on their mothers mood, and whether or not she was around. Growing up as kids, they had their spats, just as they had their own tender moments. Though as the years began to pass, the two grew apart, each year adding what felt like a hundred yalms.

Enemies & Rivals

Lufrid Silverscream - Malicious. Terrifying. Vicious. This man both terrifies Menelwen and boils her very blood. For years, he has been unable to find her, and if life goes the way she desires, she will never hear, see, or learn of the mans whereabouts.

Kale Aideron - Had Menelwen not been blackmailed into taking a job, she may have been able to meet the Highlander on better terms. This not being the case, the two have gone toe to toe in numerous encounters, and one such time nearly ended both of their lives. The man is a fierce fighter, appears to be a strong tactician, and seems to be an even more loyal comrade to those he deems are his companions.
