« Smile. »

She forced a smile. He slapped her with his full-plated gauntlet.

« Again. »

She closed her eyes as the pain was already fading. It seems her skin grew a little bit thicker with time. She looked straight to his face and smiled.

He slapped her again. A few troopers laughed. He grabbed her head and suddenly forced her to look at the ground.

« Lower your gaze, dog. »

She lowered her gaze and held her breath. Locked her feelings away. Stood still. She imagined being in a place far away...a field of flowers, by the pale moonlight, hiding in the embrace of shadows...far from the Empire...far from him.

« Do you know why I summoned you ? »

She shook her head negatively, keeping her gaze low. He slapped her again. Vicious laughs were heard once more.

« Say ‘No, Centurion.’ »

« No, Centurion » she repeated submissively, in a neutral tone. Her cheek was as red as blood but she made abstraction of the pain.

« Good. You are a quick-learner, after all. » his voice had something fearfully mechanical and metallic through the full armor he was wearing. He begun walking around her, tapping his boots on the ground as he looked at her as if looking at a pathetical pet in training. He stopped after a while, as she remained silent and quiet, and beckoned one of the trooper close.

« Hit her. » he commanded.

Meifeng’s eyes grew wide with surprise, as the trooper could not hold a sadistic smile. He struck her hard in her belly, making her fall on her knee as she tried to catch her breath, enduring the pain. The Centurion made a few steps backwards and quietly sat to watch her muffling a painful cry.

« I want you to prove your loyalty to me. It is a very simple task, something not too difficult to achieve for a good dog. You will go in Eorzea as a refugee, and here you will get closer to whoever I deem interesting enough. See it as a little test, mm ? You will be my eyes and ears, and eventually my knife in the dark. Do you understand ? »

She was unsure of what he was really aiming at. Was he really talking of freeing her to command her like a soldier ? Was he so confident ? The thoughts rushed quick in her head. An opportunity. An opportunity to strike him and destroy him. To free everyone from his grasp. But as she thought of all this, she did not answered as fast as she should have. The Centurion nodded to the trooper who violently kicked her in the back, smashing her to the ground.

« I know what you are thinking... You will learn that dogs do not think. They answer when asked. And they obey. Now...it seems you do not quite understand, so I will explain things another way. Let’s see... Should I remind you of your situation ? Your master saved you all, by negociating your lives with us. Have some respect to your new masters. Now...I am a merciful man, all your friends are safe and spared. After all, they wielded, they are not technically rebels. However... » his voice grew cold and harsh « ...they are not citizens of the Empire. As long as they work in our camps they are safe...but bad workers deserve to be punished...just like you, bad dog. » He stopped and nodded again. The trooper grabbed her, pulling her from the ground and punching her even harder. She cried in pain, blood flowing on her face.

« Do you understand ? »

« Yes ! » she cried, without even thinking about it this time.

« Good. » he walked towards her as the trooper saluted before getting back in the ranks.

« I will make you pay any mistake. If I ever doubt your loyalty, your people die. If I ever doubt your skills, your people die. If I ever doubt your usefulness, your people die. Try anything, and I will make them beg for death. Do you understand ? »

« Yes, Centurion. »

« On your feet, dog. »

She raised painfully, trying to stand straight and still. A tear rolled down her cheek.

« Why are you crying… ? » his gauntlet gently wiped the tear from her face, wiping blood at the same time. She remained still, holding her breath, trying to cast away her feelings once more.

« You have no reason to cry... You should be grateful. » his voice was even colder. He seemed to ponder over something before asking in a neutral yet harsh tone : « Undress. Now. »

She felt her heart stop beating in her chest for a moment. All of her wanted to take her chance, kick a trooper, grab a gun, shoot at the Centurion. One try, one shot. She’d probably die after. And...all her people with her foolish attempt would die as a consequence. She thought of all the people she grew up with, and her oath to protect them and bow to the chief’s will. All of this was the consequence of his attempt to save everyone. It wasn’t the right choice, but it wasn’t a bad choice. She slowly understood...the horrible dilemma he faced and she was facing since the day that man took a fancy in torturing her.

She undressed. There were many hematomes on her body. But that wasn’t what the troopers were looking at, she was sure. Once more she could her laughs and vicious comments. The Centurion gently raised her chin and gazed at her from all angles. It was humiliating. But she stool still, naked and bleeding, silent and pateint. Enduring. Whatever it will take.

« I could ask all my men to enjoy you here and now. Would you like that ? »

She felt a cold chill in her spine and a horrible feeling of disgust seized her. She was unsure of what answer he was waiting, so she said nothing.

« No… ? You think you’re too good for them ? Should I take you myself then ? » he grabbed her by the throat and pulled her closer. She closed her eyes, praying for this moment to end. He laughed briefly, releasing her. « Now, tell me, dog, how do you feel ? »

She opened her eyes and gazed at the ground. Thoughts rushed quick in her head once more. It was obvious. The words he chose. The game he was playing. He was training a dog to obey. « Grateful. » she finally told him after a significant silent.

« Show how grateful you are. On your knees. »

She obeyed, slowly bending to her knees before prostrating herself at his feet.

« Good. Now, you understand. » He grabbed her and made her stand straight once more, before patting her on the cheek. « If you are alive, it is my will. If no one harms you, it is my will. If your people lives, it is my will. Be a good dog, and things will remain as they are. Do you understand ? »

« Yes, Centurion. » she replied submissively.

« Good dog. Tommorrow I will give you the name of a rebel leader who fled to Eorzea. You will hunt him and kill him. Bring a proof of the death and come back. If you fail, you pay the price. If you succeed, well...you will keep feeling grateful to me... » saying so he gently carress her cheek, freaking her out even more. It seems he was enjoying pulling the strings of this theatrical sadistic show. He walked away, and stopped half-way, nodding to his men. « Beat her up, but do not defile her, I need her to be focus on her task tomorrow. » he commanded. The men were already grabbing her when she could not help but cried « Why ?! »

The troopers waited for the answer as well. « Next time you will not make me lose that much time to cope for your stupidity. Be grateful for what I do or do not allow. Or maybe you have a complaint to make ? »

Meifeng closed her eyes, shaking her head as she realised what her life woul look like now. All her freedom, all her dreams, all her peaceful ideals smashed by the Garleans. She thought of her people, who would know her fate or worse if she ever tries something now. She had to be tough. She had to be stronger. She could survive this. Bend to the Empire’s will. Make this Centurion believe he had her in control. Be the dog he wanted her to be. And wait the right moment. Do whatever it takes. Endure as longer as needed.

« No » was her reply.

« Good. »

He left. They beated her up.

Appearance & Personality

Nature & Demeanor

Nature & Demeanor

Demeanor:

She spent her early childhood being the submissive child training to be a shinobi worthy of the Doman's legacy, and the rest of her life kneeling to the Empire. Brainwashed and beaten up for years, she learnt to live by the rules and codes of Garlemald, and eventually ended up truly believing they could rule this world and bring peace to those unfit to rule. She begun to think her people's fate was merely due to their inability to protect themselves, and that their resistance was wrong in the first place. She gradually embraced the Empire as her only hope for salvation, doing whatever she needed to earn her citizenship and place among the true garleans. Often did she think of running away and free her people, but now she is a loyal subject of the Emperor, despite the horrors she endured under the command of Nikolai rem Gladio, who subjugated her and still hold a terrifying authority on her.

Nature:

Meifeng was a kind woman. All she ever wanted in life was to grow up peacefully and enjoy every moment of happiness life could bring. It could be the simple pleasure of tasting green tea in the moonlight or the warm feeling of friendship when someone gets close to her. But her dreams were smashed by the Empire's invasion and the rebellion who led to bloodshed and slaughters. She learnt to be tough, strong, to hide her feelings and be without a shred of mercy if needed. She learnt to survive, untill she became an empty shell for Nikolai to command.

Trope:

Whatever must be done will be done. No matter how hard it is. No matter how deep will be the wounds. Meifeng was humiliated in all kind of ways and made her heart a sword of steel the day she was forced to bend to the will of the commander who made her life a living-hell. He made her stronger, though completly smashing her will, fueling her mind with the vivid fear of disapointing him. For 14 years she bended to his will and accepted being treated as a mere war hound for dirty jobs, an animal one can pat on the head or smash on the ground. She was deprived of her identity, her existence reduced to a tool, her will wiped, and her only hope became to live long enough to earn her citizenship fairly, so Nikolai may finally recognize her usefulness and aknowledge her as a being worthy of Garlemald.

Notable Features

Notable Features

Common Appearance:

Meifeng is a cold eastern beauty. Pale skin, long black silky hairs and deep onyx eyes. She has a beauty spot near the right corner of her lips painted black. She is not very tall but she is certainly thin. 14 years of military career and 5 years of shinobi training have made her quite athletic, and physically able to resist great amounts of pain.

Scars & Markings:

Her whole body is covered with several scars, burnt marks of hematomes, testimony of the fights she ran through, and the tortures she had to survive. She also has a tatoo on her cheek which is a symbol of her village, a token of distinction to remind everyone her rank in society. It would have no value for anyone else but can be used to recognize her more easily. Nevertheless, she's used to hide that tatoo behind strands of hairs, as she gave up her clan's legacy for Garlemald.

Clothing:

As a garlean operative, she usually wears a black military outfit with an Imperial Shadow visor. As a shadow, she usually uses hidden daggers, and magitek gauntlets with hidden long blades.

Operative outfit

It is quite rare to see Meifeng with the traditionnal clothes of her nation. She usually wore colourful robes with body jewels and flower headdresses, but only use these to approach gullible eorzean now.

Traditionnal outfit

As an imperial Shadow, when she does not want anyone to make a connection between her murderous attempts and her loyalty to Garlemald, she uses a shinobi attire, all dressed in black and midnight blue, with utility belts and thin leather and cotton clothes which are quite useful to reduce the noises when she hides and hunts her targets. She is always wearing a mask when she does so, and uses Doman short swords to fight in close combat, as well as handful of tools such as sai, smoke bombs, poison flasks, etc

Abilities

Strengths

Strengths

Meifeng is very good at locking her feelings away, but this is also her greatest weakness. She knows perfectly the ways of the Empire and how to adapt to survive, as she was often beaten up at any mistake she'd do when speaking to any garlean. She is also a very good fighter, well-trained for overall 20 years, and quite able to learn more. She is also a beautiful woman - and this is something she learnt to use to get closer to the targets she was told to assassinate. Although it is something that disgusts her deeply, she has a very strong will and is ready to do anything it takes to reach her citizenship.

Weaknesses

Weaknesses

Meifeng has been treated as a slave for so long she forgot how it felt to actually live as a person. How it felt to be trusted or trust anyone. How it felt to be considered as a hyur being and be appreciated for who she is despite her crimes. Getting used to all kind of physical of mental tortures made her lock her feelings deep inside, waiting for the day she'd be finally considered as a member of the garlean empire. With the years passing by, Nikolai made her the instrument of destruction of all she ever fought for. With each target she was led to slay, a shred of hope was murdered inside her as well. Thus, her greater weakness is none other than her dedication to her people. Threatening their lives and casting the price of hundred of victims for her own freedom in death was more than she could pay. And when she realized that her own people could not forgive the price she paid to protect them, she realized she became a garlean idealist, and had no reason to fight to protect those who would rather chose rebellion and retalations over peaceful adaptation for the greater good of imposing worldwide peace...

Combat

Combat

Meifeng uses 2 very different styles of combat. More than anything else, she is trained in the paths of ninjutsu, using short doman swords, mastering discretion and using tools to poison ennemies or dissapear from sight in a thick smoke cloud. She is quick, agile and her years spent as a Garlean's "dog" for Nikolai made her endurant as well. Her greatest strenght are her feet: she fights like she dances, as light as a feather. She can easily jumps on walls or knock someone off with all sort of kicks, which made her train by herself on the pugilist's way of fighting when she was sent regularly in Eorzea. As a trained assassin and fighter, she relies more on her skills than instincts, which makes her a worthy opponent for anyone who is part of the army, and an instrument of death without mercy for anyone who is not.

History

Glass-hourglass.png History

WIP

* She was 5 when the Empire invaded Othard.

* She grew up in a village nearer to the Steppes than the cities. She was the daughter of the village's chief and had many brothers and sisters.

* She had a peculiar fascination for animals, especially lemurians and opo-opo. She could spend hours observing them and mimicking them. A travelling Doman found it quite interesting and told her father he should use her fascination to train her as a fighter. They chose to raise Meifeng as a warrior and she was a quick learner despite her complete lack of ambition and tastes for day-dreaming and peaceful meditations.

* Her father welcomed Doman rebels when she was 20, hiding them in the village. Unfortunately, it brought the Empire's attention and a troopers' unit was sent in retaliation to annihilate the village. Her father negociated terms with the Centurion Nikolai quo Gladio (who later became Primus Ordinarius) and denied any relationship with the rebels, wielding to the Empire in exchange for their lives. All were sent to work into the imperial camps to help manufacturing weapons and ceruleum, except for her father whom she never saw again.

* Meifeng lost her mother due to the harsh conditions of living they were condemned to. She gradually lost all hopes of freedom and gave in to anger. She waited for an opportunity to strike and murdered a few soldiers before she was captured and brought before the Centurion who enslaved her people. Despite the fact she should have been executed for her act, he found her fighting spirits and skills enjoyable and decided to play a game with her.

* She was treated like a dog by the Centurion and his troopers, and endured all kind of torments as he made it clear any mistake would lead to the slaughter of all her people. At first, she learnt to obey the hard way, but as time fleeted she played his game and acted like the imperial dog he needeed her to be. She sacrificed herself every day to protect her people, waiting the opportunity to strike and save them. Unfortunately, the opportunity never came and she remained an assassin for the Empire against her own will.

* She spent 14 years being the Centurion's spy and blade, killing whoever he sent her to kill. Doman rebels who fled to Eorzea, mostly to test her loyalty. Despite her convictions she was true to her oath towards her village. She killed them, poisoned them or lured them wherever the Centurion wanted. She never earned his trust, but he knew she would never try to rebel as long as he could threaten the lives of her friends. She could not take the decision to sacrifice as much people...as much friends...for the sake of her honor.

* At 26, she was now quite used to the imperials' codes and values. She was trained to obey and she kept obeying. With time, they stopped beating her up, as she was not doing anymore mistake. The Centurion became Primus Ordinarius after illustrating himself in the battlefield, and joined the XIIth legion. He brought Mei with him to Gyr Albania and trained her like he would have teach a dog to sit and bark at will. She submitted, but gainst all appearances, as she grew stronger and wiser, Meifeng stopped waiting for opportunities and decided to create her own in Eorzea. Now that Nikolai's confidence was high, she knew it was the perfect time to use her position, and managed to earn more freedom as a spy. But the more she was trying to hold on to her people's honour and lives, the less she believed in her desire to actually turn her blade against the Empire's view for a peaceful united world. The chaos, the disorder and crimes lurking in the city-states made her realize that maybe she was wrong to believe the resistance was all innocence and peaceful dreams. They were unfit, they brought chaos, and perhaps her people did not deserve to be protected. Perhaps Garlemald deserved to be.

* The rumors of a ninja acting as an assassin for the Empire crossed the seas. Unfortunately, Meifeng's reputation died with her sacrifice and she became more and more isolated. Her own people loathed her and considered her as a traitor, even when knowing the true reasons of her act. She departed once again for Eorzea, empty shell of a hyur, with the clear order to strike down the ala mighan's revengeful ideas.

* The relationship connecting her to the Primus Ordinarius Nikolai Rem Gladio begun unclear at this time. Despite obviously wanting to use her as a tool, the last years were filled with less beating and more strategic lessons. For some reason, he raised her to serve the Empire, by making her embrace their values and act like a perfect soldier would. As she grew closer and closer to his ideal, he begun to be more permissive with her and personnaly trained her a few times. Meifeng could not help but acting like a terrified abused child in front of this fatherly figure in her life, but eventually ended up embracing his views and wish to earn his trust.

* Working under cover for a noble ishgardian by the name of Arthur Sinclair, she gathered intels up untill the day she was ordered to kill him. Growing fond of him, she chose to poison him and ran away, hoping foolishly he would survive and hide. He did survive, but instead gave in to murderous retaliations, slaughtering garlean soldiers and trying to smash her as well. It made her realize sparing people was a mistake, and that her inability to obey orders led to even more aweful outcomes. Ending up bleeding to death as he thrusted her with a spear, she barely survived with unexpected help from a garlean defector.

* She highly contributed in gathering intels and capturing defectors for a few years, up untill she extracted an ala mighan priestess during a garlean ambush (rp event).

* She helped a Decurion in Ul'dah to keep her cover safe and was thus considered in high esteem. Asking to put to good use, she was integrated in a mission to extract an imperial conscript who was trading information with Eorzea. Securing the target alongside fellow garlean, the success of the mission led the Decurion to vouch for her citizenship and promotion to be an official intel operative, a Frumentarius. Nikolai rem Gladio dismissed the idea, warning officers about Meifeng's status as an Ann, who did nothing that special to earn citizenship and operative rank, and who should not be trusted so easily.

* Sent to investigate on a half-garlean deserter, she captured a mercenary named Aelfred and submitted him to a bargain, asking him to be her agent in Eorzea against his freedom. Later, deeply wounded by Arthur, she ended up hiding in his place. Chosing to help her instead of getting rid of her, he earned her trust and she swore an oath to protect him in return. He treated her kindly, up untill she learnt to trust him and be comfortable around him. Ending up fighting against one another, and understanding her motivations, Aelfred chose to be Mei's 'hero". Eventually, he offered her to give her a child, being the son of a pure-blood garlean, so she could be seen as fully integrated in garlean's society, and perhaps change her superiors attitude towards her. She accepted. Since then, he acted as a strong protector for her and the future child.

* With time, affection grew and Aelfred proposed to Mei. She accepted to marry him. Standing as his hero, he faced Nikolai rem Gladio and invoked Garlemald's laws to force the commander to entrust Meifeng to him, and vouch for Mei's citizenship as the spouse of a garlean citizen and mother of garlean heirs. Although highly suspicious and annoyed, Nikolai rem Gladio had no other choice to accept the request, insisting on providing the couple servants to ensure Meifeng's safe pregnancy and assistance on raising the children as true garlean should be (the servant will of course be his eyes and ears, mostly). Nikolai's intentions were unclear, and his last words with Aelfred clearly overshadowed a dangerous rivality.

Dedicating himself to the goal of freeing her, he made sure her missions would be great victories to convince her superior of granting her citizenship. 'I will be your hero' he told her. He saved her times numerous times, and offered to give her a child so she could earn even more legitimacy on asking citizenship. He protected her, and his heir, and against expectations, they shared a strong bound leading to him proposing to her. She accepted, and he talked his way through freeing her from her military duties and Nikolai's command for as long as she needed to give birth to garlean heirs and wed Aelfred as a citizen.
