Tenth son of the current shogun of the Mitsurugi Bakufu by one of his many concubines, Mitsurugi no Jin was born under the name Ryunosuke until he came of age. As a youth, he studied the arts of language, etiquette, and swordplay and stood to inherit much due to his prestigious lineage.

However, Jin misliked the shackles of nobility. Having seldom ventured beyond Bukyo Castle, he found himself enraptured by foreigners and the world beyond Hingashi. One day, he experienced a vision that he interpreted as a sign from the kami to leave his homeland and see the world.

Finding the first merchant vessel that would have him, Jin left from the port of Kugane to the merchants' port of origin, Limsa Lominsa in the distant realm of Eorzea. There, he enlisted in the Adventurers' Guild and earned a small degree of fame as a wandering ronin in the west.

Appearance

"Step-by-step, walk the thousand-malm road." —Jin Mitsurugi

A man of the Auri Raen, Jin stands shorter than most of his kind at a mere six shaku and six sun (six fulms and seven ilms in Eorzean measurements). A fair-skinned, young-looking man, his stern expression and serious demeanor belie his warm and curious nature. His sharp, yellow eyes resemble that of a hawk, accented with black markings that almost seem to meld into his thin, black eyebrows. Like all Au Ra, his flesh bears white scales and two, large aural horns on either side of his head. The scales are prominent upon his cheeks, chin, neck, back, arms, thighs, and feet. A thin, reptilian tail protrudes from his rear, bony spikes near its base. Jin's hair is a mess of straight, black spikes, unkempt and sticking out on all sides. The way his hair parts often causes it to cover his right eye.

Jin's hands are calloused from years of gripping his sword, and a very large, prominent scar is drawn across his chest from left shoulder to right hip. The scar is seldom-seen, but was clearly caused by a sword's blade. No other permanent scars mar his body, however. Despite his status as a wanderer and ofttimes a vagrant, Jin seems to bathe regularly and knows to file his nails down. He takes excellent care of his horns, which lack so much as a chip or crack, no small feat for an Auri man of his occupation. Jin walks with his head held high and his shoulders straight, often with his hands to his sides. While his posture is almost never threatening, he tries to remain on guard and ready to draw his katana from his hip.

Enemies

Garlean Empire

Jin's enmity with the Garlean Empire began in his home city-state, Kugane. Even as a youth, news of the Empire's despicable acts abroad sickened him. Jin has clashed against the Garleans numerous times, and is considered a wanted criminal by the Empire.

The Confederacy

As he left Kugane as a vagabond, Jin was unable to pay the Ruby Tithe, and thus ended up in conflict with the Confederacy. He was sunk below the waves, but fortunately a passing Kojin saved him.

Kojin of the Red

After gaining the blessing of the Kojin of the Blue, Jin came into conflict with the Kojin of the Red, seeking to rescue a young Raen girl taken by the beastmen.

Lupin Bandits

During his travels in Yanxia, Jin helped save a small village from a band of Lupin bandits.

Lominsan Pirates

Not all Lominsan pirates are enemies of Jin, but when he first arrived in the city-state, he fought a band of pirates who sold captured civilians into slavery. He defeated them with the aid of a Lalafellin member of the Rogues' Guild.

Sahagin

Often found in western La Noscea, Jin took on the task of fighting the "fishbacks" when they launched a coordinated assault on the Tidegates.

Kobolds

The perennial enemies of Limsa Lominsa's frontiersmen, Jin fought the kobolds during a raid on Camp Bronze Lake. As he was relaxing in the hot springs at the time, he was forced to fight in naught but his bathing suit.

The Alacran

In Jin's travels, he fought many human bandits and criminals, but none were so cruel as the Alacran. Jin battled against these bandits to defend the smallfolk of Crescent Cove.

Amalj'aa

Passing through southern Thanalan, Jin chanced to witness a group of merchants captured by the Amalj'aa and being taken for tempering. He fought and slew the lizardmen with the aid of the Brotherhood of Ash, freeing the captives.

Lambs of Dalamud

The Lambs of Dalamud are, perhaps, the oddest of Jin's many enemies. He first fought the lunatic cultists near the Abandoned Amajina Mythril Mine after they deceived him and tried to sacrifice him to the lesser moon.

Redbelly Wasps

Notorious Duskwight bandits, Jin took up the task of fighting against the Redbelly Wasps to prove his worth in response to the scorn he received from Gridania's natives.

Ixal

Jin encountered Ixali combatants along his route both in the northern portion of the Black Shroud when he decided to take up tasks at Fallgourd Float.

Dravanian Horde

Dragons are dangerous creatures. This, Jin learned when he took on the Horde in the central highlands of Coerthas for the first time. His battles against Nidhogg's brood were many during the final days of the Dragonsong War, and the samurai took part in both battles at the Steps of Faith to defend the innocents of Ishgard.

Gnath Onemind

While roaming in Dravania, Jin spent much of his time in and around Tailfeather and helping the hunters therein. He learned of the Vath and the Gnath and decided to investigate, and ended up battling the latter to protect and aid the former.

Illuminati

Coming to the hinterlands of Dravania, Jin slashed through a Magitek Vangob when he witnessed it attacking a group of adventurers and goblins. Much of his time in Idyllshire was spent fighting the Illuminati on the citizens' behalf.

Affiliations
