Biography

Pre-pirate history

Byrm was born well before the Calamity, to a village now consumed by Sahagin expansion. He grew up to a family that tried to make ends meet farming sparse plants and animals, a life that was pockmarked by poverty and hardships. He preferred to work with the plants, the labor of harvesting and caring for them preferable to dealing with animals. Pirates sometimes rolled by, stealing what little goods they made, and his older sibling was killed after an ill-fated attempt to fight off a group. Byrm had wondered before why his parents didn't fight back, but seeing his brother's body skinned and strung up gave him a clear indication of why they didn't.

Every since then, Byrm started to envy that freedom and power. To be able to take what one needed, like a wolf hunting sheep. He knew what crew did his brother in- and someday, he wanted to do the same to them all. He trained with an axe- like many men in Vylbrand did. He possessed enough strength to cut the scraggly pines of the volcanic island down within three strokes, and that was only when he was 16.

He often spent what little spending money he got from his parents on town day- while his sibling and parents sold their goods, he'd go to the bars to gamble and drink. He preyed on newcomers, the patrons that came in every market day knowing not to challenge the hotblooded young man. He'd get into fights, usually winning if we wasn't piss drunk. A few pirate crews made a pass at him, but none really wanted to take on someone that could overpower their captain with a lucky move. Or have a captain who could barely read and write.

A few months before he turned 17, Byrm decided to throw his lot in with someone who was very much under his strength level. Someone that he later pledged his life to in the dead of the night, with the sea as his witness.

Pirate Time!

One market day, Byrm met a pirate named V'mephi Kurz. The young woman hit him like a ton of bricks when he saw her- the first crush Byrm ever had. Impulsively, he decided to hang around her, finding out she wanted to be a pirate captain, a skilled shot, and full of ideals. He was sold. He ran off with her come morning, and they started to hang around the ports. Byrm had no care in the world as he became her muscle, helping her pull off cons and shakedowns as they tried to get enough coin to gamble on a ship.

Their moment of truth? Betting Byrm's strength against three of the best men of a captain with a sloop. It was a hell of a fight, and Byrm almost lost his arm in the battle, but he won. His contenders fell one after the other, round after round, until the captain tried to double cross him and Mephi by siccing the rest of his crew on them. Mephi shot him, and the resulting fight was equally bloody and filled with gunsmoke, blood, and wood shards.

Mephi got her ship, but she had to tend to Byrm for a month- he was injured badly, and one of his wounds infected within a week of his healing. When she could, she tried to find more crewmates, starting with a doctor, of course. Slowly, as Byrm healed, their crew started to gain its roots. Once Byrm healed enough to start whipping the crew around, he assumed the position of First Mate.

They went out to sea.

The first few years were tough, but the group grew to know each other. Byrm all knew how to beat them to an inch of their lives- pirates took whatever inches of rope they could. Byrm learned to never give them a millimeter after an incident with a swabby. His sheer strength made it easier to raid coastal towns and other ships that were about their size. But Byrm had to learn to ignore his crew during raids. Sometimes, a few would drag off women or children, and Byrm learned exactly what for. Even Mephi told him to leave them be- they couldn't afford bitter feelings in the crew.

Byrm looked away, only punishing those he caught stealing food. He grew accustomed to some of the more sinister of his crewmembers as the years passed. The pirate crew grew, stole a new ship, and grew more. He kept the dozens of men in line, being the final fist that settled disagreements. He was a people man- he could read people, understand their emotions, what they feared. And use it.

The day they finally got a galley to house their massive crew, mephi called him to her quarters. She confessed her love to him, and Byrm to her. To them, that was the day they married- the day he gave her an earring he wore since his childhood, and her a ring her mother made her when she came of age. They were about 22.

Mephi died fifteen years later.

It was the worst day of Byrmdraga's life. Merylwyb was a name know throughout the seas- a youngster rising to the top compared to a few of the old blood. She wanted to unite all pirates- a sentiment not shared by Mephi and Byrm. Merylwyb hadn't encroached on their part of the seas yet- but when she did, they found out the hard way that she surpassed them. The Leviathan's Whiskers was blown apart, and Byrm and Mephi fished from the wreckage with whatever was left of their crew.

Merylwyb offered terms of surrender, to join her alliance. Mephi refused. The shot still echoes in his mind. Out of grief he acceded, sobbing as he held her limp body. But once he arrived to Limsa, he refused to pick his axe up. In the sake of peace, he still kept his life, but he was a nobody now.

He had wounds to heal.

Current

Byrm was idle in Limsa for much of the time up until now. He had a lot of time to think about everything that happened in his past, holding down odd jobs bartending for free companies. Mostly he pisses his earnings away living in bars. Eleven years a drunkard.
