Appearance

A tall, stately appearing elezen, Duran takes efforts to ensure that he appears the epitome of Gridanian military excellence. Seldom seen without his armor, or the mask that marks him as a Wood Wailer, he is careful to maintain an image of professionalism by keeping his gear in good order. Like all members of the Mithranc family his hair is a bluish silver and he prefers to keep it long rather than trimming it back.

Personality

Duran is very proud of his heritage and Mithranc name. He grew up idolizing his forebearers and nearly everything he does is to live up to their standard. He isn't a particularly warm personality and sometimes he can come across as downright callous in his pursuit of a greater good. He follows a rigid code of honor that emphasizes loyalty and valor over personal gain.

Background

Warning: Spoilers abound
Duran was born in Gridania in the year 1549 and spent his early childhood in an idealistic setting, always hearing stories of the adventures and glory of the Mithrancs that came before him. Before his first birthday his parents had betrothed him to the newborn daughter of the Nerian family, Crawa Nerian. Just before his seventh birthday he was sent to Randirim Temple to spend a day with Crawa (The Grand Adventures of Little Garaf and Crawa) before continuing on to Arborholm.

At Arborholm Duran met his two uncles Gen and Saito, both with distinguished military careers of their own (Trials of a Young Wailer Warden). They put him through an austere training regimen designed to make him into an educated soldier so that he could live up to the family tradition. Duran remained there for 13 years before finally graduating from his training.

He journeyed back to Randirim Temple with the intention of marrying Crawa Nerian and only then did he find out that her parents were missing. Crawa refused to complete their betrothal until her parents were found so Duran had little else to do but return to Gridania and take up a position in the Wood Wailers. He has remained there, serving in both the Wailers and the Twin Adders, ever since, just waiting for the day when he can take his place beside his betrothed.

The Mithranc Family

The Mithranc family is an old, prestigious but relatively minor house of nobility in the nation of Gridania. Best known for their silver hair and stories of military exploits and adventures, they remain as a symbol of valor and determination for those Gridanians that may have grown up hearing their many tales. Fortunes have favored them in the past few generations as their wealth has become considerable enough to own a lavish, if moderately-sized, estate in Gridania. They also maintain a refuge in the remote reaches of the Twelveswood known as Arborholm. While they may reside at their estate in Gridania, Arborholm remains the spiritual home for the family.

By tradition the Mithranc family has avoided political ties with other families within Gridania but has established a link with the Nerian family going back several generations. They have donated funds to keep Randirim Temple, the Nerian's ancestral home, in good condition and the two families have intermingled at several points.

Relationships

Garaf

There is little about Garaf that Duran finds respectable. The Duskwight's cavalier attitude towards propriety seems incompatible with Duran's sense of sensibility and the two regularly butt heads. Either would be happy to never see the other again if Crawa didn't form an inseparable bond between them. Duran very probably resents the close relationship Garaf has with his betrothed.

Crawa Nerian

Duran's first bond with Crawa was not necessarily one of his choosing as the two were betrothed at a very young age. He has come to know her better, if not precisely well, since then and finds he has an admiration for her devotion to her family, Nophica, and the nation of Gridania.
