"She is the result of too much love crammed into a tiny body."

History

Origins

[All information written within here is only obtainable if you are a member of the Thaumaturge's Guild and have access to member records.]

Born to a Lalafell mother and a Miqo'te father, Kalahira Nira was remarkably small as a newborn and suffered many health complications in her youth because of it. Her small body had trouble keeping up, resulting in a severe lack of stamina and slow recovery time. What she lacked in stamina, she made up for with her aetherical connection. From a young age, many bore witness to her ability to manipulate aether around her, whether it came in the form of starting a fire or freezing objects solid.

She was a problem child in school, as she would freeze children who wouldn't play nice, or set fire to her homework when she didn't feel like doing it. It did not help that, both because of her size and being a hybrid, she was an outcast and was often by herself, left to her own thoughts and playing alone.

Once her parents realized there was naught they could do for their child, as neither of them had any experience using aether, they began seeking help from the guilds around Ul'dah, Limsa Lominsa and New Gridania. The Conjurers were the first to answer the call, believing her connection was an affront to the elements and a potential danger, so they visited Kalahira and began working with her in an attempt to calm the raging storm that was presently contained within the little hybrid. Their efforts seemed to be fruitful at first, but it did not take long for her to return to her old habits and regain her connection to aether. The next guild to contact the family would be the Thaumaturge's Guild of Ul'dah. Rather than attempting to subdue Kalahira's connection, they saw fit to instead train her to contain the flame within so it did not become an uncontrollable wildfire.

Unfortunately, in order to see to it that Kalahira's powers were kept in check and always monitored, she would have to make the guild her new home, and she would have limited contact with her family... if any. That is a decision no parent wants to make, but ultimately, Kalahira's parents allowed her to go. They wanted to get her help, and the guild would provide it. They preferred their daughter to be safe and happy, rather than to risk becoming a potential danger to herself and others with age.

Kalahira's mentor and tutor would be Oni - a former teacher who became a master of thaumaturgy. They were well respected within the Thaumaturge's guild because of their eagerness to work with the young and to see them grow powerful.

The two became good friends very quickly and they seemed like a perfect pair; A wise and powerful mentor, and an eager apprentice with great potential.

Extinguishing the Flame

[All information written within here is only obtainable if you are a member of the Thaumaturge's Guild and have access to member records.]

Over the course of many years, Kalahira went from being a troubled outcast to being a beloved member of the thaumaturge guild... so much so that many members began to refer to her as family. She had such a bubbly attitude, always seeking to make sure everyone was happy and helping when people needed help with difficult or trying matters. But her overseers in particular recognized a severe inability, or ill desire, to refuse when something seemed out of her league... or worse, dangerous. While there were many who loved her, there were others who despised her. She was still a hybrid, and not everyone liked her because of that. Freak, outcast, abomination... these were among the things she was called by those who had a disliking for her. As a result, she would try harder to appeal to these people, never recognizing they would never even try to care.

As a result, Kalahira was often getting into trouble in some way or another, whether it was because she was stealing restricted documents or pulling stunts that forced study rooms to be closed down for days at a time, she seemed so eager to be loved by everyone that she was prepared to do anything for that affection. She never ratted out on those who made her perform foul deeds, but the overseers always knew who was really responsible.

In an effort to get Kalahira away from the bad influences around her, the overseers tasked her and her mentor, Oni, to make a trip around Thanalan in search of an important medicine. There was no medicine that needed acquiring; the task served as a distraction to keep Kalahira's mind on another matter while she was away from the guild. Oni's job was to try to figure out why she was so eager to win over everyone's affection, especially since she was already loved by many.

Unfortunately, Oni's betrayal occurred the moment the two stepped out of the gates and into the wilderness.

Instead of attempting to dissuade Kalahira from her habits, he instead began nurturing them. Kalahira became a charming individual whom could win over the hearts of any she engaged in a conversation with. Additionally, now free from the ever watchful gaze of her overseers, Kalahira was trained to use abilities that were forbidden among the Thaumaturge's guild. Because of her natural ability to use aether to such a grand extent, these abilities were easily learned and she became a master of horribly destructive powers in no time at all. One of her favored forms of attack was a whirlwind of fire laced with electricity. She was certainly capable of drawing attention to herself with such an attack, which is how she was able to conquer any enemies who crossed her path.

Naive and trusting of her mentor, Kalahira did as Oni demanded, including killing innocents because she was led to believe they were dangerous criminals. She also participated in the campaign against the Garlean Empire around the time the Warrior of Light and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn were attempting to stop the Ultima Weapon. Kalahira's intentions were to help, but Oni had other goals.

Finally, one day, Oni revealed himself to be a powerful Voidsent who had since possessed the body of the man who was once someone else. Who they were was lost forever when they took on the name: Oni. As it turns out, the whole reason Oni was so helpful and nurturing of his Thaumaturge students was because he was seeking a new host - one that was more powerful than his current one. Kalahira had been carefully molded into a being of powerful aetherical potential and she was loved by so many that luring new victims to feed off of would be a cinch.

Unfortunately, while Kalahira was powerful, she was ultimately overwhelmed by Oni and became possessed. Then, unable to regain control of herself, Oni began to use her body to go on a rampage to feed off the land and become more powerful.

Once the guild discovered what had happened, they joined together with the Conjurer's Guild in an effort to confront Kalahira / Oni and stop them from causing any further destruction. It turns out the Conjurers were right all along, from the day Kalahira was a child... her aether did indeed become dangerous.

A long battle ensued in the deserts of Thanalan, but ultimately, Oni was stopped and a seal was created within Kalahira so she could never use aether again. However... given her ability to overcome the last seal that was created as a child, the Conjurer's asked the question: what will we do if that happens? The two guilds agreed that if she ever broke her seal and became attuned to aether again, they would be forbidden to train her and, depending on what happened, they may need to put her down for good.

Kalahira survived the sealing process, as observed when she returned from the desert. However, the overseers noticed something amiss with Kalahira. After some research, the overseers concluded that when Oni took control of Kalahira, they consumed everything that once made them who they are. As a result, Kalahira had been reborn, so to speak, as a new person. She possessed no knowledge of her past, who she was, what her skills are, etc.. All she knew was how to walk and talk. Everything else would come to her over time, as she certainly possessed a will to learn.

The overseers will keep an eye on her to ensure she does not become a threat again.

Character Information

Appearance

Kalahira Height Reference.png

Kalahira' ears are Miqo'te, but they are larger on her head than on an average Miqo'te due to her size. She also possesses a long, fluffy tail that is as white as her hair.

Her hair seemingly glitters in the sun at a distance because it is so well maintained and pure white, but it does not actually glitter.

Her eyes were once pink, but due to her story, they have shifted to black and white. Many ask if she is blind or hindered by her eye, but she is quick to inform them that she can in fact see just fine.

She lacks eyebrows, which is actually very well concealed because of her hair.

She has an overbite with one sharp tooth that sticks out constantly from her left upper lip. She is used to it, though, so she doesn't bite her lip as often as one might think.

She lacks any kind of muscle mass visibly, despite her time spent in the wilderness. Her skin is soft and smooth, as though she has never worked a day in her life.

She often over indulges in sweets as both a means to cope as well as her having a major sweet tooth. Because of her small size, the weight does not have anywhere to go, so she always has a protruding belly. If you have just met her, you would believe she is late into a pregnancy because of the size and shape of her belly. Her weight is also why her skin is soft despite all the time she spends in the wilderness.

Due to her nickname (and preferred name) of Kitten, she has also painted white whiskers on her face.

Personality & Habits

Kalahira has been given the nickname "The Love Fairy of Eorzea" because she is so talented at bringing people together and starting relationships.

She is seemingly always happy, and she has no problem sharing that joy with others around her. Whether it means cheering someone up after a bad day, being there for someone when they feel alone, or even recharging the batteries of a stranger with a kind discussion, she is always on the lookout to make everyone as happy as possible.

Kalahira can seem oblivious, or even dimwitted at times because of her amnesia. She often doesn't recognize when someone has intentions to harm her, and she will ask questions with painfully obvious answers. One must wonder if she does this because she truly does not know, or if it's a part of her way of keeping people happy. Some are prone to believe it is the former, as she is often observed as having a distant, vacant look in her eyes when she is asking these questions.

While Kalahira can be super playful and cuddly, she also knows when it's time to be serious. Whether she is trying to save a life, or hunting for food, or she is a part of an expedition with her friends, she knows when to put a lid on it and to put her game face on. She is sharp as an arrow and always aware of her surroundings, especially if lives depend on it.

When depressed or alone, she has a tendency to eat to pass the time or to get through hardship. As a cook, she is able to create her own confections... but she doesn't always do this and will sometimes seek out the nearest bakery to indulge quickly. She will also play her flute, but she seems to do that less and less these days.

She takes great strides to ensure nobody ever sees her upset. Thus far she has been successful, but time will tell if someone will see her in a dark place.

Powers & Abilities

The Echo

Kalahira has the echo, yes. Her variant of the Echo allows her to catch a glimpse of what transpired in an area. This is part of what makes her so good at tracking - she can see if someone has been in an area recently because the echo permits it. It doesn't work 100% of the time, however, so she must still rely on old fashioned tracking skills most of the time.

Thaumaturgy

While Kalahira does not have the ability to use aether presently, she still possesses the ability to use it if the seal is ever broken and if she recovers her knowledge. Her two favorite spells were: 1) Creating a shield of fire around herself. The flames would protect her from projectiles, as well as seer the flesh of anyone who tried to cross. The trouble with this is: she needs to remain stationary for it to be maintained. 2) A fiery/electric tornado intended to wipe out large groups of people or great threats, such as magitek constructs.

Matter Manipulation

One of her lesser known abilities is: she can wield a single blade and change it to be longer, shorter, wider, thinner, etc.. The effect is temporary, and clearly has an aetherical effect on the blade (think POTD weapons). Once she has exhausted the need for whatever shape she has put the blade into, it returns to its original design.

During her time as a Thaumaturge, they realized she had this power from a young age, often creating simple things to help calm her down... like creating a pillow from a book or some such. She certainly would have made a powerful Summoner, but fortunately, that never came to be.

[OOC Note: This will likely be one of her most used powers... but it will be done within reason. IE: She can only manipulate blades. This allows me to play her as a Samurai, Ninja, Red Mage, etc. by using their weapons, but NOT their abilities. IE: She will have an aetherical blade similar to that of, say, a Samurai temporarily, but she doesn't know any of their skills like Hakaze or Jinpu.]

The Beast Inside

Oni was never purged from Kalahira - he remains sealed within. If Kalahira suffers enough emotional trauma, or if she becomes enraged seeing her friends in danger, she can lose control of herself and Oni will take over temporarily. When this happens, she will go on a rampage and attack whatever the source is, and she cannot be stopped unless someone overpowers her, or until she wears herself out. She does not last long in this state, as she enters a sort of "all or nothing" stance and gives it everything she's got. She'll use powers she doesn't know how to use, but Oni does.

This is comparable to burst damage. Kala will not last long in this state and, once it is over, she will pass out.

Oni's control is temporary and limited, so a full repossession is not likely to happen unless it is for story reasons.

Rumors

Any rumors listed here are those that were created by the people I've role played with. I do not create my own rumors.

"I heard she took out an entire Garlean platoon by herself!" - A man in the Quicksand

"She's got a really positive outlook all the time! I dunno how she does it." -Some kid in red.

"She is the love fairy of Eorzea!" - A woman whom Kalahira introduced to their new love interest.

Family & Friends

Kalahira's parents are either dead or they traveled far away. Regardless, Kalahira does not know if she has any parents because she's never met them (due to her amnesia).

At present, Kalahira does not have any close friends. Everyone she knows is an acquaintance, but nobody really knows her and she doesn't know anyone else.

As a result, there have been many nights where Kalahira has been crying alone in the wilderness.

Equipment

Kalahira dresses light when she's going casual or planning to wander around in the wilderness. Her standard outfit is the pink and white rogue gear she wears, and while it leaves little to the imagination, it also protects her from the elements of Ul'dah. She is not a fan of hot or dry weather, and Ul'dah has both. In order to tolerate the weather conditions of Ul'dah, she needs to dress light to stay cool.

When she is in wet or cold climates, she dresses in something that covers more of her body. While she loves cold and wet climates, she is not stupid and she knows what snow can do to the body after prolonged exposure. It is not uncommon to see her walking around wearing a blanket, simply because you never know when it might come in handy.

Her Chocobo, Sentry, usually does the lifting for her camping supplies and other materials. These materials include:

  • A bow with a quiver of arrows
  • A length of rope
  • Cooking supplies
  • A Roe-sized tent (in case she needs to shelter people besides herself, or to let Sentry hide)
  • A few handfuls of dried grass for starting a fire
  • Fresh Water
  • String
  • A map for emergencies
  • A magitek rebreather for when she needs to dive under water for long periods of time

She also has a flute, which she plays when the wilderness sings to her. On her person, she is almost always carrying a short sword or a dagger, as well as a short rope and some bags for gil and other supplies. She is always wearing her primary gil pouch as a necklace, to avoid thievery or misplacement.

OOC Notes and Q&A

Q&A

Q: Why make her a Lala/Miqo hybrid? Why not just choose one or the other?

  • Small characters have always been a huge appeal to me, as I always like to imagine myself in their shoes. A small person up against odds that are weighed against them? Relatable, says I. And as much as I liked the idea of having a catte, the problem I'm faced with is: I don't like being a tall character in MMOs because of the aforementioned reason for preferring small characters. So I simply took the catte properties and applied them to the Lalafell.

Q: Why make her so short compared to the already short Lalafell model?

  • Because I like to have a character who has a great weakness along with a great strength. Kalahira has an overwhelming connection to aether, making her a force to be reckoned with... so while she's powerful with magic, she's not really physically capable. She tries, but she simply cannot compare to those who are much larger than she is.

Q: Aren't her powers a little... overpowered?

  • This isn't my first RP character. I know how to RP a character's powers in moderation without being a mary sue. Don't worry, I'm careful not to drive people away with bullshit.

Q: She's possessed by a voidsent? Isn't that a little-

  • Yes, shush. I know in canon, possession means you lose complete control and the demon stays in control until it's destroyed. But that makes things boring for RP. I prefer to say that she has a voidsent in her rather than saying something like "there's an Ascian laying dormant within."

Q: She has the Echo?

  • Yes. From what I understand from the story, it's not that uncommon and it's varied in the ways it affects someone.

Notes

  • Kalahira is the name of a Drell Goddess in Mass Effect. The player did not recognize this until they did a search for their own character's name on Tumblr.
