: Ryuk's tribe has a brutal coming of age ritual where, when children are in their 10th summer, they are bound to a sacred tree while the rest of the tribe packs their belongings and moves to their next location. If the children can free themselves and catch up to the tribe, they are given a name and accepted as a full member of the tribe. Ryuk lost a beloved older sibling to this when he was a young child, and so, when he was in his 10th summer and taking part in the ritual himself, he hid a small blade in his clothing and was able to cut himself free. He then assisted the other children with loosing their bonds. This created a rivalry with another boy, the son of a tribal elder, who believed Ryuk had shamed their people by not allowing the other children to prove their strength on their own. Many of the adults in the tribe agreed, and this would follow Ryuk for the rest of his life.
