Oni appears to have grown up malnourished. Though his height is above average for a midlander, his musculature is subpar for a warrior class. Since arriving in Limsa, he has since developed a more defined tone, but stunted either way. Additionally, he has a long scar up both legs, from ankle to slightly above the knee. He gets his unusually heavy weight from the amount of metal implanted into him, but even removing his prosthetics, he is abnormally heavy for his size and build. This is not counting the spear he always carries around, of course. Though its permanence may as well include it, as he cannot put it down. He has an nonremovable collar about his neck, which holds a dragoon's soul crystal in the fitting. His right-side metal arm is also inscribed on the inner cover with "Combat Model #0168" to mark him as one of the subjects from [[The Colossus Project|the Colossus Project.]]

He has snowy white hair that is particularly pure. The natural sheen gives it an almost blue undertone. He has eyes equally as icy blue. On his face, left side, is a blue mark running along his temple and cheekbone. In times of duress or when his aetheric concentrations grow too high, the marking has been known to change to a red hue.

''Behavior''

Oni is a friendly, slightly introverted man who keeps to himself in crowded places. He is the type that would insist on refusing aid for fear of getting in the way or being a burden, even if he was in dire need of said care. He’s passionately loyal to those he cares about. He watches life flow by from the corners of the alleys, having a habit of only coming forward willingly when someone is in need of assistance or defending. He is also an avid hunter and often brings in his game to clean or consume. Sometimes, what exactly he caught is unknown. Closer friends and allies would describe his comfortable behavior more animalistic than not, as being chased, licked, or bitten by him is not out of the ordinary. His movement at night can be a bit creepy, as he will climb furniture, or walls, to perch in odd places. He's harmless, however.

''Oddities''

The primary thing anyone will notice about Oni is that he spends much of his time with his head turned to the side muttering to himself in full conversation. He uses "we" and "us" with a grammatical consistency that suggests more than just an error of speech. When referring to his personal thoughts or physical body, he will say "I/my/me", but when it refers to himself as a whole, the plural is used. This is because he includes the spear on his back, named "Raiden", within that "we." Only when he believes the spear and himself agree on a thought or concept will he use "we/us" when referring to more internal opinions.

His relationship with the spear is not objective. He fully believes the spear to be alive and speaking with him constantly. At times, should the topic of conversation among others tend towards harm coming to him, or doing something otherwise bad for his health and well-being, his demeanor will change from the quiet neutrality he often shows to a sharp-tongued and protective personality. In this state, he never refers to himself as “I”, but “the kid” or “him." In this state, he claims the spear to be controlling him.

''Intelligence''

Oni is extremely observant and clever. He’s also a rapid learner. His ability to pick up on his surroundings and translate them into usable information, be it personal or environmental, is superior. Even with his eyes shut he still seems able to get a feel and read those around him. This makes him an excellent fighter with deadly results. As far as the magicks? He claims he knows of them, specifically conjury, but has been unable to practice them since the loss of his forearms. His quick wit and keen observation allow him to focus in on emotional cues people give off, and even uses that to his advantage when trying to manipulate someone. His failures are in basic social intelligence and an inability to relearn how to behave normally in company of others. This isn't a mark against his intellect, but more a deep rooting of a culture he came from.

===Raiden, the Spear===

Dealing with Oni means dealing with an entity he refers to as “Raiden.” When doing so, he is referring to the spear he carries. When under this mania, he claims that the spear is controlling him, and will even change memories and perceptions based on who is controlling his mind at the time. The mania is graduated, in that at times of lucidity, Oni’s body may twitch or snap in oddly unrealistic ways that he is apparently not controlling on his own. They are most recognized by their reflex-like jerk motion, and can be anything from a kick to a punch. In deeper versions, Oni may even appear to be fighting against himself from walking to a location, acting as if his body is dragging him along against his will.

Regardless, the personality Raiden brings forth is much different than Oni's. His demeanor changes on a whim to a proud, sharp-tongued warrior who claims to be an avid dragoon. Raiden states that he is an ex-warrior of Ishgard, and his only reason for being alive right now is because the Fury permitted him to return within an object. He believes his penance for life is protecting Oni. Raiden takes an semi-inferior role to Oni and is fiercely protective of him. Given his situation, he may be more protective of the body, rather than the person. When Oni's opinion comes into the mix, he tends to care a little less. He will even force Oni into situations he'd rather not do so long as he won't be harmed.

The spear appears to function on lightning aspected aether. This electric affinity supports the theory that the spear acts as a circuit closer to keep Oni's mechanics functioning. The electrical influence also explains how the spear can control only Oni's metal components, such as his arms and legs. If the soul crystal is in Oni's possession, Raiden can use this ability to vibrate Oni's mechanics finely enough to cause the spear to reverberate. This is how it is capable of producing speech without using Oni's mouth as a surrogate. These electrical stimulations can be fine-tuned enough to produce a hallucination effect for anyone who decides to touch the spear. It can be assumed that this effect is occurring with Oni at all times. The most common effect is a visualization of an elezen and a disjointed sensation of touch or sound that feel real. An outside onlooker would simply witness someone holding a spear and reacting to nothing, so the effect is only shared by those grabbing the lance with bare or lightly clothed flesh.

Despite appearing to be a being capable of "reading minds" because of this effect over the brain, Raiden cannot read thoughts, which is why Oni must verbalize all communications to the lance. The lance then picks up the vibrations in the air caused by the voice and is able to translate that in a form of crude hearing. Oni does appear to hear voices caused by the lance, but they are not thought based. He complains frequently that Raiden shouts in his right ear. Implanted into his right ear is a Garlean linkpearl, which originally was used for communications, that the spear has figured out the frequency to and can vibrate to said frequency to create a rather staticked vocalization that is not heard by those connected to the com line. Since it required learning the correct frequency, Raiden cannot communicate to others through other linkpearls.

When Raiden "takes over", it's most noted by the change in Oni's eyes. Normally a crisp, icy tone, his eyes will haze over and dilate from the electrical interference Raiden causes in order to push his way into control. Depending on how deep the control is, Oni may or may not recall what was said or done by himself or others during that time.

Seen on right is an image of who people will tend to see when in contact directly with the lance. He's described as a dark-skinned wildwood elezen with black hair, blue highlights, and vivid purple eyes. He also has red tattoos on both sides of his face, is of tall height, and typically wearing an Ishgardian habergeon.

==History==
===Past===
Oni's city state of origin was Gridania, where he was raised by the conjuror's guild to follow their path. Around 1570, when Garleans had made an unprovoked attack on Gridanian civilians, Oni was among those taken. Prisoners kept from multiple locations, ages and races would be used for what was code named the "Colossus Project" tasked with discovering new methods for engineering prosthetics that could go on to develop the Empire's mechanical giants of the same name. Using a living body to find the most natural balance of weight and motion was the theory, however; the aetheric abilities of Eorzeans showed that even more could be done with the test subjects.

Oni was one among 300 or so. He was used primarily for small-group combat and one on one combat. When not on active duty, he was among the very few who were capable of ending the lives of his now experimental brethren. He resided here for the next 8 years, where he became exceedingly good at his job. The three hundred he lived with developed a vast culture within this time, attributing to the behavior he shows today.

When he reached his twenties, he silently began to turn on his handlers. He waited for a time, performed exceptionally well, and acquired admiration from his officers. With this miniscule amount of trust, he took action one day on a transport airship. He stole some supplies, clothes, and turned on his commanders. Using Raiden's lightning-based aether, they disrupted the airship's aetheric power enough to send controls offline. In this confusion, he acted against those on the ship. Specifically, he cut the tendon in their ankles to prevent them from chasing him down. Free to jump, he lept overboard. The impact with the water knocked him unconscious and caused his soul crystal to come lose from his prosthetic. Without the mechanical support to maintain his vitals while submerged, he may not have made it to shore.

The currents carried him to a crystal beach just outside of Moraby drydocks, where Belila Tineniel discovered him. She managed to lift his head above the waters, resulting in an immediate expelling of water from his lungs and a revival. She helped him back to the small port, where he was able to recover somewhat, but still remained weakened. With his first task of escaping the Empire accomplished, he is now faced with the reality he's thrust himself into. He has no family to return to, no energy supplies for his prosthetics, and a lackluster relationship with an enemy nation. With no where to turn, Belila took him in and found him new life in Eorzea.

===Present===

Currently, Oni has been living with the Order of the Sword and Rose for three years and acts as their leader. He received the group upon the announced leave of the company's former founder, Konner Kinkaid. Through the care of countless friends he has made, he has grown into a powerful fighter and close ally to many. He has not fully escaped the Empire, for it still follows him to tempt him into returning.

He has also received numerous upgrades and devices from many engineers across Eorzea, making his prosthetic arms weapons of their own.

===Strengths/Skills===

He is an experienced warrior and hunter. He also tinkers with weaponmaking and armorcraft and seems to have a very good handle on making both products. He also has basic knowledge of alchemy and goldsmithing. As previously mentioned, his sense of surroundings is hyper-aware. Often he says his spear acts as an extra set of eyes.

His combat abilities are rooted in assassination-style attacks meant to be swift and deadly. Unless intending to kill someone, he will purposefully strike at limbs to cripple a foe than kill them. The reason he does this is unknown.

Oni also has a unique quality that prevents some aetheric spells from doing damage. He is entirely immune to lightning aether, as it is absorbed into his frame easily. He can also tolerate exposure to ceruleum much longer than a normal person due to the prosthetics, which each carry a ceruleum vial that infuse the substance into his bloodstream 24/7, or be seen openly drinking it from a canister. While this is beneficial in the short-term, the long term effects can be detrimental. (see additional explanation in weaknesses below)

===Weaknesses===

Physically, Oni's strength never reaches its fullest due to his dismal endurance and inability to keep up with his own weight. Dragging out a fight with him is a sure way to win, as he'll become winded much quicker even though he is a fit fighter.

Additionally, Oni's mechanics also require Garlean sources of energy, like magitek cores and ceruleum. Each arm holds a core and a ceruleum vial, giving him a source of back up energy. All together he has about a month total before he has to replace anything, but typically he tries to replace a core every 2 to 3 weeks, making sure he always has one healthy core in the other arm. The core and ceruleum will not deplete evenly. He selects which arm is the "main" power so in times of changing cores and vials, he doesn't shut down all together. If starved of these resources, he will collapse similarly to losing his spear. Revival depends on replacement of these materials. This means someone handy enough could remove both cores or vials from the arms and render him a ragdoll.

His manic episodes can be considered a weakness as well. They often happen at inconvenient times and cause him to do things he wouldn’t otherwise do. Igniting an episode is an easy way to dismantle the icy focus. Not to mention, bringing out Raiden causes him to have poorer judgement and crippling stubbornness. Anyone capable of exploiting this will always have an edge over him.

Finally, Oni has retained his ability to take in aether from his surroundings, but lost the ability to focus it. Physical aether, like wind, water, or earth, have normal effects on him. Plasma-like aethers such as lightning, any form of ceruleum, or corrupted aether radiations are still absorbed readily into his systems. This makes him extremely sensitive to aetheric flow. With no way to vent out excess, the aether load can grow to a life-threatening level very quickly. A strong enough burst attack is capable of giving him aether-poisoning almost immediately.

==OOC Background==

''The Colossus Project'' is a headcanon created by the writer for [[Oni De'phor|Oni de'Phor]], Balmung, to go along with his backstory. It was formed in 2013 around the time of A Realm Reborn when the character it intended to be used for was created. It has since flourished into an engaging side story for both its writer and those who join along with it. It has continued on from the time of its creation to make an interactive role play experience with a sci-fi flare to the current FFXIV universe. With the launch of Stormblood, even more material has been given to the writer for use, and more roleplayers are welcome to join in if they wish. Contact Oni de'Phor in game on the Balmung server for details.

It is also acknowledged that this headcanon has not been stated in game and is within its own RP bubble universe. Similar stories by other players or the story itself do not coincide without express permission of the respective owners of each story.

==IC Background==

Named for the continued research into more advanced models of the Colossus style automation, The Colossus Project was founded at the turn of the new century for the purpose of developing more advanced technologies to implement into human-like automation by IIIrd legion scientists. When efforts on standard vanguards had been exhausted, a push to use humans to hold the automations was proposed to researchers. Initially put down as unethical, the researchers who founded the project altered their methods to develop prosthetic body parts for injured conscripts. These prosthetics would be studied for use in the larger automations to obtain a more natural movement for a bipedal mecha. Mortality rates settled in at 40% for the first subjects fitted with false arms, legs, eyes, etc, due to their already sick nature upon arrival. Each successeful surgery designated the person with a number, and they would be kept within the Garlemald facility to study.

By year 1540, the project developed a number of advanced limbs. Mortality rates had dropped, and more healthy individuals were being inducted into the project. Conflict with nearby Eorzean societies fed a number of conscripts into the project, some injured enough to justify a surgery, but sturdy enough to survive. By this year, the project had created over 300 successful subjects. The new models of the Colossus were developed shortly after, but the original founders of the project pushed for the research to continue. Despite its name, the project yielded no new models of the Colossus automation, and instead began to focus on the study of their subjects' aetheric nature for further use. The subjects of this project contributed to many genetic advances in the IIIrd legion.

What puzzled some facility workers and inspired a number of scientists was the behavior of some of the human subjects who survived their procedures and lived into adulthood. While not every subject experienced this, many began to have mental changes that researchers wrote off as a result of confinement. Some subjects had taken to more animalistic tendencies, cannibalism, and compulsive needs to hunt both wildkin and man. Every subject present fell into a culture where a hierarchy existed, as well as their own sub-language. Subjects of this project often speak with poetic metaphors that mean much different things, which they used to keep information among themselves, and at times, confuse their handlers.

Some subjects have since been moved out of the facility and into castrii scattered around the continents. Notably, Castrum Occidens and Castrum Solus contain the majority of remaining subjects.

Currently an optio, Lillium pyr Sylvanius heads the section of subjects housed at Castrum Occidens. A roegadyn sea wolf woman who worked her way up through the ranks, she became the overseer of The Colossus Project as part of her promotions, in hopes to weed her out. She received her demotion to optio due to the escape of one of her units, and her subsequent failures to capture him. However, as no one else saw to take her current position, she was permitted to continue to lead the group. The subjects refer to her as "Mother", but the subjects will refer to any female officer by the same title.

A Garlean native who originally worked under Lillium as one of her many soldiers. He was known among his men to abhor the concept of the project, and wished that resources and money did not have to be wasted on keeping altered conscripts alive. His repeated submissions to the government for mass euthanasia met the same end as Lillium sought to repeal each one, and succeeded. At some point, and to the bewilderment of his colleagues, Lysander changed his outlook on the subjects and pushed for more augmentations after his unauthorized experiments on unit #0201AB. Due to being a male officer, the subjects refer to him as "Father", but his title holds more weight now than before. Promoted to tribune after extensive strides in prosthesis development with the subjects, he overtook Lillium's rank when she was demoted to optio. He moved to Castrum Solus, along with roughly half of the remaining subjects, to continue his controversial research.

He would be the first of six total disposal-type units who worked as executioners on the field and in the facility. In 1578, he escaped a transport ship bound for Occidens, and eluded recapture long enough to cause Lillium's demotion to optio. He was briefly caught by Lysander sas Theius, re-purposed, and released. He is still currently in Eorzea.

Labeled #0178FB (Frost Blade). Glace/Frost's character is not owned by the Colossus Project's founder. Now he assists in attempting to rescue the subjects taken by Lysander and return them to Occidens.

Labeled #0305 "One", formerly thought to be #0201AB, Leera is a young, duskwight man who serves as an disposal-type unit directly under Lysander sas Theius. He is seen as both a lapdog to the tribune and leader of the taken subjects. He is currently working to assist Lysander in recruiting new subjects and creating stronger ones. He was Lysander's first surviving subject of experiments performed outside of the Colossus Project template.

== Subject Culture ==

Through the years in captivity and after a number of experiments, the human subjects housed at the initial facility in Garlemald, as well as in neighboring castrii, developed their own culture and hierarchy. While the ranking system was created by Lillium and her workers, the weight of each rank and tier developed into the system that exists today by the subjects placed in them. The people inducted into the project were from no specific race or country, making the group as a whole a melting pot of Spoken.

Subjects are broken down into tiers and categories. Tiers list from one through three, with one being the lowest degree of alteration, and three being the highest. ==Project Discoveries==

While the original concept was to build a better, more natural automation, this project made strides in aetheric studies and Allagan technology.

===Aetheric Compatibility===

Each subject above a tier 1 basic unit required additional aetheric supplementation. When tier 2 units were being produced, Sylvanius' team discovered that some of their subjects were better suited to the upgrade than others. This transition caused a high number of fatalities until her scientists discovered and resolved the issue. They found that one body of a non-Garlean subject could be affiliated with a particular set of elements. Applying general aether to these units had no problem, but when elemental crystals were being tried as a power source, some units flourished, and others experienced a swift death. The scientists discovered that the implanted cores gave off a resonance of a set element(s), and if not matched properly to its new host, would cause failure of the prosthetic and the subject. Eventually, three categories were formed: single-element, near-compatible and far compatible. Near-compatible units were subjects who resonated with two elements that did not negate one another, and negated the weakness of one. I.e. Lighting and fire, where water against the fire would be negated by the lightning. Far-compatible units contain two elements which neither aid nor hinder one another. Only disposal units were found to be far-compatible, and their existence was often blamed on their compatibility, not the error of the scientists.

=== Nodes and Cores===

Certain subjects have been outfitted with different technology than their counterparts. Primarily among numbers 100 and up, these subjects underwent additional surgeries to implant technology to test for the project. The Colossus magitek is modeled similarly to some of the many automated iron giants found within deeply buried Allagan ruins. These automations, along with numerous others both fully cybernetic and chimerae, were believed to be powered and controlled by central computational hubs. These devices, classified as either "nodes" or "cores", were used in the Colossus Project. Nodes were defined as small devices, while cores could be significantly bulky. These devices sat within specialized magitek chambers inside the prosthetics attached to the subject. Across the entire project, nodes and cores have been implanted in nearly every body part accessible.

Subjects who received some of the first devices were found to have significantly more stability when converting aether into usable energy, and this resulted in higher resilience, stronger subjects, and increased longevity overall. The use of the Allagan devices became standard by the creation of the 150th unit. While the devices were collected over the course of many years from many locations, after this transition, Castrum Occidens supplied the majority of the harvested cores. Their mining efforts were made even more pronounced after the Calamity, when Dalamud's shattering sprayed fragments across the continent. No documented piece of the second moon was used within the project, but the damage it caused to the land uprooted many useful access points to deep ruins.

Despite the benefits, select subjects experienced strange side effects from the implantation of enhanced prosthetics. These automations, along with numerous others both fully cybernetic and chimerae, were believed to be powered and controlled by central computational hubs. It has continued on from the time of its creation to make an interactive role play experience with a sci-fi flare to the current FFXIV universe. ''The Colossus Project'' is a headcanon created by the writer for Oni de'Phor, Balmung, to go along with his backstory. It was formed in 2013 around the time of A Realm Reborn when the character it intended to be used for was created. It has since flourished into an engaging side story for both its writer and those who join along with it. It has continued on from the time of its creation to make an interactive role play experience with a sci-fi flare to the current FFXIV universe. With the launch of Stormblood, even more material has been given to the writer for use, and more roleplayers are welcome to join in if they wish. Contact Oni de'Phor in game on the Balmung server for details.

It is also acknowledged that this headcanon has not been stated in game and is within its own RP bubble universe. Similar stories by other players or the story itself do not coincide without express permission of the respective owners of each story.

IC Background

Named for the continued research into more advanced models of the Colossus style automation, The Colossus Project was founded at the turn of the new century for the purpose of developing more advanced technologies to implement into human-like automation by IIIrd legion scientists. When efforts on standard vanguards had been exhausted, a push to use humans to hold the automations was proposed to researchers. Initially put down as unethical, the researchers who founded the project altered their methods to develop prosthetic body parts for injured conscripts. These prosthetics would be studied for use in the larger automations to obtain a more natural movement for a bipedal mecha. Mortality rates settled in at 40% for the first subjects fitted with false arms, legs, eyes, etc, due to their already sick nature upon arrival. Each successeful surgery designated the person with a number, and they would be kept within the Garlemald facility to study.

By year 1540, the project developed a number of advanced limbs. Mortality rates had dropped, and more healthy individuals were being inducted into the project. Conflict with nearby Eorzean societies fed a number of conscripts into the project, some injured enough to justify a surgery, but sturdy enough to survive. By this year, the project had created over 300 successful subjects. The new models of the Colossus were developed shortly after, but the original founders of the project pushed for the research to continue. Despite its name, the project yielded no new models of the Colossus automation, and instead began to focus on the study of their subjects' aetheric nature for further use. The subjects of this project contributed to many genetic advances in the IIIrd legion.

What puzzled some facility workers and inspired a number of scientists was the behavior of some of the human subjects who survived their procedures and lived into adulthood. While not every subject experienced this, many began to have mental changes that researchers wrote off as a result of confinement. Some subjects had taken to more animalistic tendencies, cannibalism, and compulsive needs to hunt both wildkin and man. Every subject present fell into a culture where a hierarchy existed, as well as their own sub-language. Subjects of this project often speak with poetic metaphors that mean much different things, which they used to keep information among themselves, and at times, confuse their handlers.

Oni appears to have grown up malnourished. Though his height is above average for a midlander, his musculature is subpar for a warrior class. Since arriving in Limsa, he has since developed a more defined tone, but stunted either way. Additionally, he has a long scar up both legs, from ankle to slightly above the knee. He gets his unusually heavy weight from the amount of metal implanted into him, but even removing his prosthetics, he is abnormally heavy for his size and build. This is not counting the spear he always carries around, of course. Though its permanence may as well include it, as he cannot put it down. He has an nonremovable collar about his neck, which holds a dragoon's soul crystal in the fitting. His right-side metal arm is also inscribed on the inner cover with "Combat Model #0168."

He has snowy white hair that is particularly pure. The natural sheen gives it an almost blue undertone. He has eyes equally as icy blue. On his face, left side, is a blue mark running along his temple and cheekbone. In times of duress or when his aetheric concentrations grow too high, the marking has been known to change to a red hue.

''Behavior''

Oni is a friendly, slightly introverted man who keeps to himself in crowded places. He is the type that would insist on refusing aid for fear of getting in the way or being a burden, even if he was in dire need of said care. He’s passionately loyal to those he cares about. He watches life flow by from the corners of the alleys, having a habit of only coming forward willingly when someone is in need of assistance or defending. He is also an avid hunter and often brings in his game to clean or consume. Sometimes, what exactly he caught is unknown. Closer friends and allies would describe his comfortable behavior more animalistic than not, as being chased, licked, or bitten by him is not out of the ordinary. His movement at night can be a bit creepy, as he will climb furniture, or walls, to perch in odd places. He's harmless, however.

''Oddities''

The primary thing anyone will notice about Oni is that he spends much of his time with his head turned to the side muttering to himself. The tense he uses speak is always second-person. He speaks with the spear he carries with abnormal frequency, which he claims is named “Raiden.” When he is speaking to actual people, this frequency is diminished, but not gone entirely. He still may turn his head and say something over his shoulder or mouth a “shh” to the spear.

His relationship with the spear is not objective. He fully believes the spear to be alive and speaking with him constantly. At times, should the topic of conversation among others tend towards harm coming to him, or doing something otherwise bad for his health and well-being, his demeanor will change from the quiet neutrality he often shows to a sharp-tongued and protective personality. In this state, he never refers to himself as “I”, but “my Master” or “him." In this state, he claims the spear to be controlling him.

''Intelligence''

Oni is extremely observant and clever to boot. He’s also a rapid learner. His ability to pick up on his surroundings and translate them into usable information, be in personal or environmental, is superior. Even with his eyes shut he still seems able to get a feel and read those around him. This makes him an excellent fighter with deadly results. As far as the magicks? He claims he knows of them, specifically white magicks, but has been unable to practice them since the loss of his flesh forearms. His quick wit and keen observation allow him to focus in on emotional cues people give off, and even uses that to his advantage when trying to manipulate someone. His downfall comes from basic social smarts, or lack thereof.

===Raiden, the Spear===

Dealing with Oni means dealing with an entity he refers to as “Raiden.” When doing so, he is referring to the spear he carries. When under this mania, he claims that the spear is controlling him, and will even change memories and perceptions based on who is controlling his mind at the time. The mania is graduated, in that at times of lucidity, Oni’s body may twitch or snap in oddly unrealistic ways that he is apparently not controlling on his own. They are most recognized by their reflex-like jerk motion, and can be anything from a kick to a punch. In deeper versions, Oni may even appear to be fighting against himself from walking to a location, acting as if his body is dragging him along against his will. When Oni wants to put Raiden away without removing him from his body, the spear is able to fold up into a small wristlet and attach to his prosthetic.

Regardless, the personality Raiden brings forth is much different than Oni's. His demeanor changes on a whim to a proud, sharp-tongued warrior who claims to be an avid dragoon. Raiden states that he is an ex-warrior of Ishgard, and his only reason for being alive right now is because he was stuck to Oni and charged with the task of keeping the boy in line. While this may make him sound loyal to Garleans, he actually expresses a deep, seething hatred for the Empire. He keeps it to himself, however. He knows full well without them, he'd not be getting his "second chance at life." Raiden takes an semi-inferior role to Oni, calling him "Master" and being fiercely protective of him. Given his situation, he may be more protective of the body, rather than the person. When Oni's opinion comes into the mix, he tends to care less. He will even force Oni into situations he'd rather not partake, so long as his health isn't in any danger.

The spear appears to function highly on lightning aspected aether. This electric affinity supports the theory that the spear acts as a circuit closer to keep Oni's mechanics functioning. The electrical influence also explains how the spear can control only Oni's metal components, such as his arms and legs. If the soul crystal is in Oni's possession, Raiden can use this ability to vibrate Oni's mechanics finely enough to cause the spear to reverberate. This is how it is capable of producing speech without using Oni's mouth as a surrogate. These electrical stimulations can be fine-tuned enough to produce a hallucination effect for anyone who decides to touch the spear. It can be assumed that this effect is occurring with Oni at all times. The most common effect is a visualization of an elezen and a disjointed sensation of touch or sound that feel real. An outside onlooker would simply witness someone holding a spear and reacting to nothing, so the effect is only shared by those grabbing the lance with bare or lightly clothed flesh.

Despite appearing to be a being capable of "reading minds" because of this effect over the brain, Raiden cannot read thoughts, which is why Oni must verbalize all communications to the lance. The lance then picks up the vibrations in the air caused by the voice and is able to translate that in a form of crude hearing. Oni does appear to hear voices caused by the lance, but they are not thought based. He complains frequently that Raiden shouts in his right ear. Implanted into his right ear is a Garlean linkpearl, which originally was used for communications, that the spear has figured out the frequency to and can vibrate to said frequency to create a rather staticked vocalization that is not heard by those connected to the com line. Since it required learning the correct frequency, Raiden cannot communicate to others through other linkpearls.

When Raiden "takes over", it's most noted by the change in Oni's eyes. Normally a crisp, icy tone, his eyes will haze over and dilate from the electrical interference Raiden causes in order to push his way into control. Depending on how deep the control is, Oni may or may not recall what was said or done by himself or others during that time. Given his situation, this forgetful reflex may be part of the mechanism the Garleans hoped to achieve. With Raiden manning the spear, Oni would be spared any traumatic war-memories the more experienced Raiden could handle. Raiden claims to come from the soul crystal Oni was given during his captivity, and the transfer of memories from that soul crystal generated this entity known as Raiden. The spear says the crystal used to grant Oni the powers of a dragoon was corrupted, so Raiden's true allegiance his unknown.

Seen on right is an image of who people will tend to see when in contact directly with the lance. He's described as a dark-skinned wildwood elezen with black hair, blue highlights, and vivid purple eyes. He also has red tattoos on both sides of his face, is of tall height, and typically wearing an Ishgardian habergeon.

==History==
===Past===
Oni's city state of origin was Gridania, though records show that a person with his name has not been seen within the last 10 years or so. He spent much of the last 13 years as a slave to the Garlean Empire. Grown up a mage with an affinity to white magicks, the Empire removed his forearms and replaced them with an odd technology in order to neutralize his ability to focus his aether before he could develop his skills far enough to pose a threat. He was among a number of others forced into particular jobs to use against the Eorzean forces, and his selected job was lancer. Being a mage, he was not physically capable of being a decent warrior. Rather than waste time taking the slaves into long bouts of training and reconditioning, they were instead augmented. In Oni's case, supportive metal and wires were threaded through his legs. The hydrolic-like reaction these mechanics make allow him to perform the extreme jumps dragoons call their signature style of combat. The spear he carries connects a circuit when he holds it in his metal hands, allowing alternate control of his body. All of the metal and wires have a central processor embedded in his torso near his midback. This allows Raiden, his spear and main control over these mechanics, to control him when he is not holding the shaft of the spear.

The spear also came with a soul crystal removed from a felled Ishgardian warrior. Even though it had not chosen Oni as a worthy owner, the Allagan-inspired design of his prosthetics and augmentations allowed the memories and spirit of the soul inside to express itself as though in a new body. The soul of the crystal was ordered to keep the boy in line and to take over his arms, legs, and even speech if it meant completing tasks. The spirit of this crystal was also corrupted do a degree, already partially succumbing to the temptations of the drake. This lust for power became transferred to the host body, making Oni and his spear very good at what they were often told to do: gain power and kill Eorzeans. When he reached his twenties, the constant abuse of being a Garlean strong arm finally became unbearable. He waited for a time, performed exceptionally well, and acquired admiration from his officers. With this miniscule amount of trust, he took action one day on a transport airship. He stole some supplies, clothes, and turned on his commanders. Using Raiden's lightning-based aether, they disrupted the airship's aetheric power enough to send controls offline. In this confusion, he acted against those on the ship. Specifically, he cut the tendon in their ankles to prevent them from chasing him down. Free to jump, he lept overboard. The impact with the water knocked him unconscious and caused his soul crystal to come lose from his prosthetic. Had he not been vitally wired to a separate entity that was mecha in nature, he'd have surely drown. Instead, Raiden sustained his vitals with the lowest energy required while his body drifted to Moraby shores.

The currents carried him to a crystal beach just outside of Moraby drydocks, where Belila Tineniel discovered him. She managed to lift his head above the waters, resulting in an immediate expelling of water from his lungs and a revival. She helped him back to the small port, where he was able to recover somewhat, but still remained weakened. With his first task of escaping the Empire accomplished, he is now faced with the reality he's thrust himself into. He has no family to return to, no energy supplies for his prosthetics, and a lackluster relationship with an enemy nation. With no where to turn, he took Belila's advice to join their group of traders, named Two Moons Trading. In exchange, he hopes they will help supply him with the necessary cores and ceruleum he needs to sustain animation.

Outside of Two Moons Trading, he still paces the Moraby shore where he washed up, hoping the soul crystal will find its way to him. He claims that because of its corrupted nature, the temptation of the dragon had already long spread to his own mind. Together he and the personality "Raiden" suffer with an encroaching darkness only seen in dragoons that stray from their righteous path. The longer he goes without the crystal, the more power lusting his persona, Raiden, becomes. He fears that if he doesn't find it in time, he may not be able to fend off the whole body controls caused by the spear. Anyone would consider him merely mad with some post-war mental disease, but each day he gets a little stronger, the spear on his back changes in luster. When he washed up on the shore, it was weathered and dull. Now it has obtained a sheen akin to steel. This evolution is the only proof he has to others that the spear is indeed alive and dynamically changing with respect to his power.

===Present===

Time has since passed and he has been reunited with his crystal. Through the help of Brand Dehlor, a new collar was fashioned for him to house the dragoon crystal. With this new interface, his aetheric sickness has decreased significantly. It was believed to be the original cause, as the crystal itself appears to draw in aether. Together with the crystal, the spear twists itself into a new shape. This shape is one of a dragon. His days in the trading group have since passed and relationships had come and gone. Now he has moved onto The Order of the Sword and Rose by recommendation of Ciel Wulfe. He hopes to find new purpose with these people, one he could not find with the traders.

Oni has also begun becoming healthier physically, as well. Once bone thin, he now supports a more nourished frame and robust muscular tone. While the ceruleum has always been the blame of his past deterioration, with this new growth his usage for the concentrated aether has only increased. Starvation at the Empire has since been ruled as the cause. He grows a little stronger every day in both body, mind and aether. Some perceive it as a good thing, while others see it as a time bomb.

He’s a weakened warrior, but the knowledge of the battlefield is well embedded into his mind. He also tinkers with weaponmaking and armorcraft and seems to have a very good handle on making both products. He also has basic knowledge of alchemy, though it is far from perfected. As previously mentioned, his sense of surroundings is hyper-aware. Often he says his spear acts as an extra set of eyes.

His combat abilities are rooted in assassination-style attacks meant to be swift and deadly. Though his teachings seem a bit rusted, as he will sometimes attack people in non-vital places on purpose. The reason he does this is unknown.

Oni also has a unique quality that prevents some aetheric spells from doing damage. He is entirely immune to lightning aether, as it is absorbed into his frame easily. He can also tolerate exposure to ceruleum much longer than a normal person due to the prosthetics, which each carry a ceruleum vial that infuse the substance into his bloodstream 24/7. While this is beneficial in the short-term, the long term effects can be detrimental. (see additional explanation in weaknesses below)

===Weaknesses===

He’s currently physically weak as it is. He is also easily swayed into doing anything if it means benefiting himself. His ties with the spear he carries are physical as well. Should he be separated from the spear in any way, he collapses. Resuscitation is impossible and many mistake him for dead when this happens, as he lacks a pulse or breathe, but he jolts back to life the moment the spear comes into contact with him again.

Additionally, Oni's mechanics also require Garlean sources of energy, like magitek cores and ceruleum. Each arm holds a core and a ceruleum vial, giving him a source of back up energy. All together he has about a month total before he has to replace anything, but typically he tries to replace a core every 2 to 3 weeks, making sure he always has one healthy core in the other arm. The core and ceruleum will not deplete evenly. He selects which arm is the "main" power so in times of changing cores and vials, he doesn't shut down all together. If starved of these resources, he will collapse similarly to losing his spear. Revival depends on replacement of these materials. This means someone handy enough could remove both cores or vials from the arms and render him a ragdoll.

His manic episodes can be considered a weakness as well. They often happen at inconvenient times and cause him to do things he wouldn’t otherwise do. Igniting an episode is an easy way to dismantle the icy focus. Not to mention, bringing out Raiden causes him to have poorer judgement and crippling stubbornness. Anyone capable of exploiting this will always have an edge over him.

Finally, Oni has retained his ability to take in aether from his surroundings, but lost the ability to focus it. Physical aether, like wind, water, or earth, have normal effects on him. Plasma-like aethers such as lightning, any form of ceruleum, or corrupted aether radiations are still absorbed readily into his systems. This makes him extremely sensitive to aetheric flow. With no way to vent out excess, the aether load can grow to a life-threatening level very quickly. A strong enough burst attack is capable of giving him aether-poisoning almost immediately.
