Piper was born and raised in the city of Ishgard. While not of noble birth, her family lived reasonably and with respectable affluence. Her father, Friedrich, worked as an Archivist for the city's libraries. Morienne, her mother, was a young socialite and homemaker. The family lived happily most years, though Morienne was constantly in ill health. She died in the winter of Piper's eighth year, leaving her grieving family reeling. Friedrich withdrew into his work, leaving young Piper to her own devices. She grew lonely and detached, often keeping to herself in her father's extensive personal collection of rare and valuable books. At sixteen, her father left the world as well; while not an old man, he'd neglected his health in the years following his wife's death. With no other family to speak of and her inheritance too little to keep afloat, Piper was left with little option. She reluctantly sold away the remaining estate and left Ishgard to find work as a trader, utilizing what she'd picked up her father's knowledge and her mother's charm and feminine wiles.

Ten years later, she has become a prominent supplier of the rare and exotic books her father taught her to appreciate, all while quietly rebuilding his collection she was forced to give up. During her time based in Ul'dah she meets a group of adventurers and friends in the Quicksand; siblings Callie and Selarian Cloverbloom, and their childhood friend Gustas, along with a few other new faces along the way. Selarian and Piper quickly become involved in somewhat of a whirlwind romance, finding a bond in eachother very soon after meeting. Eventually, she decided to return to Ishgard to start again her studies in Sharlayan Astrology she had enjoyed as a child. This hiatus away from her friends pulls her apart from the group a bit and provides complications in her relationship with Sel. They decide, mutually, that the timing is not right and their lives are too separate. Though she agreed out of desire to let Sel be happy, Piper is quietly crushed, having lost the closest thing to a functioning relationship she's encountered since her childhood. After several months absence from her friends, she has finally completed her courses and returned to Gridania.
