The highlands of Gyr Abania in the eastern reaches of Aldenard were once under the control of a martial nation known as Ala Mhigo. It was, perhaps, the historically conflicted nature of the territory that forged the country into a significant military power.
Even as this aggressive nation sent its forces to conquer in the west, it repelled repeated attempts at invasion from the east. In the Year 1557 of the Sixth Astral Era, however, it finally fell to the incursions of the Garlean Empire. From that time onwards, the country became merely another imperial territory under the governance of its usurpers. Though the people of Ala Mhigo once revered Rhalgr, the Destroyer, as their patron deity, any such religious observance has since been forbidden by the controlling authorities.

Many refugees fled across the seas. Yugiri Mistwalker is the leader of the Doman refugees that arrived in Vesper Bay seeking asylum in Ul'dah.

==Creation and Development==
Naoki Yoshida has confirmed that Doma's culture and settlement are based off of Japan and once Doma starts trading with Eorzea in the future update we will see more Japanese-style items, equipment, and furnishings in the game. The Ninja job originally comes from Doma, as does the Raen clan of the Au Ra race.

Suzume was born 3 years after the invasion and subjugation of Doma by the Garlean Empire. Born to a family of what appeared to be simple farmers the girl wasn't given much notice, and that was exactly how the family liked it. While the Kurogane family boasted a small, modest, farm out of the way of most it was naught but a cover for their actual occupation. Resistance. The Kurogane family was not at all accepting of their new rulers and did everything they could to undermine the Garleans, disrupting supply lines and tainting food stores. Largely they were able to get away with it, but only until Suzume turned 2. A few moons after her birthday the Garleans delivered swift and brutal justice to their home.

Suzume's mother Ayake hid her child away when she saw the soldiers approaching, tucking her away in a small compartment under the floor of their hut while the altercation took place. It was a violent thing that left the girl with a deep seated hatred for the Garleans later on, but that terrified her. After the soldiers were finished they dragged her mother away and left her father dying in the hut, setting it ablaze with him still inside. The girl herself was trapped in the small compartment, pushing hard at the door but failing to open it. Her cries for help however did not fall on deaf ears and while the house burned around them her dying father dragged himself to the compartment as quickly as he could. He would not let his daughter die.

He released her from the prison and the child screamed and cried over his fading body until the smoke became too much and though she tried she could not drag him from the house. She was forced to flee and she found once she started running she could not stop herself, not until she collapsed near the road. It would be there that Shouhei would find her, a wandering Priest come to investigate the smoke that he'd seen rising. Shouhei took in the girl without a thought, nursing her through her smoke inhalation and then raising her to become one of the Priestess that attended his temple. He had known of her parents, having stopped many times to purchase fruit or other foods from them for the temple itself but he'd never been close to them enough to have much of a hand in Suzume's life.

She was mistrustful at first but grew to love Shouhei as one would any parent. Grateful the girl threw herself into his tutelage at the young age of 8. Around her 10th birthday the Garleans called on the temple and bade it be shut down, they did not condone the worship that the Au Ra perpetrated. Shouhei fearing for his many wards agreed and sent the soldiers on their way. But he had no intention of taking away he hope that the Temple sewed in the Domans that prayed in their halls. The temple was moved to a more secluded part of the surrounding area and operated in secret, along with training to become a Priestess, or Priest the wards of the Temple were now taught how to fight as well and trained in the art of subterfuge as much as possible.

Suzume flourished in this environment, becoming proficient with the Bow, a Bo Staff, Naginata, and to a much lesser degree the sword. As with all Priestess' she was also taught in the arts of healing to take care of the injuries of those that passed through the temple like the rest. Her zealotry against the Garleans however was noticed and Shouhei, who had always felt close to her, decided it was time she aided the Resistances with him. For moons he'd been helping them by supplying food and the like form the temple, even weapons that they had been making as quietly as possible. Suzume accepted without hesitation, becoming the only other in the Temple to know where these people hid.

The temple evaded detection for a long while, providing succor to those who needed it regardless of their status or position on the war and aiding any Resistance that asked it of them. However as with all things kind the Garleans in the area took notice and captured one of the travelers that the Temple had cared for, the man fearing for his life, professed everything. The Temple was raiding the following evening, instead of a massacre however the soldiers captured those that worked there and dragged them away, though inevitably some were able to escape. Suzume refused to run and fought side by side with Shouhei until they were overpowered by the much larger amount of soldiers. Shouhei was captured and tortured while his student was forced to watch, but they would not kill him, needing his knowledge on the resistance's locations and members. They were becoming a thorn in the Empire's side.

In the end Shouhei refused to tell them and both he and Suzume were taken prisoner and dragged from their burning temple to be taken to the local Legatus. In the night before the reached their destination however some of the Shinobi in the resistance they had been aiding would raid the camp of the Garleans. In the confusion Suzume was able to escape but while freeing Shouhei she was wounded and he forced her to abandon him in favor of running, they would not kill him, he was sure of it. With no alternative Suzume ran, their Shinobi saviors being overwhelmed slowly, she'd never be sure if they saved Shouhei or survived.

Suzume fled to the nearest province and did her best to lie low but it was not to be. She was hunted relentlessly for her knowledge, and for the Legatus' pride, so when the Domans fled she blended herself in with the crowd and was whisked away to Eorzea. Now she seeks only to return to Doma and find Shouhei if he yet lives, but with little money and only what she could carry on her she knows she has a long road ahead of her to get herself back.

*Recently*
Recently Suzume has run into a companion that she has dubbed a bodyguard while in Eorzea, Hayate Ashikage. The two met when Suzume was attacked by bandits on the way to Ul'dah and she fled them only to run into a man who had already gained their ire. After a quick but bloody fight the bandits were left dead and Hayate actually -indebted- to the woman. The two are traveling together for the moment and doing their best to survive.

The son of a Miqo'te and Hyur, Koh'li is a sociable Hyur who quickly befriends the [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Warrior_of_Light_(Final_Fantasy_XIV) Warrior of Light]. Despite not being part of the [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Scions_of_the_Seventh_Dawn Scions], he always seems to be in the right place at the right time to meet the WoL wherever they go.
==A Realm Reborn==
After the Warrior of Light is inducted into the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, they meets Koh'li during one of their time in The Black Shroud, and later in La Noscea. Occasionally, Koh'li would assist the Warrior of Light in some minor skermishes, though when it came to matters of the Garlean Empire or Primals, Koh'li would bow out in favour of letting the WoL handle them.<br>
<br>
During the Warrior of Light's time in Coerthas, seeking aid from [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Haurchefant_Greystone Haurchefant Greystone] and hunting down [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Ysayle_Dangoulain Iceheart], Koh'li would encounter the Warrior of Light and speak highly of Ishgard and the people of the region. Koh'li uncharacteristically even assists in dealing with the heretic posing as an inquisitor, as well as defending the Steps of Faith from the Dravanian Horde, claiming to have a soft spot for the city.<br>
==Heavensward==
Koh'li is not seen again until the Warrior of Light reaches Ishgard, where he openly welcomes them to the city. He claims to have citizenship within the city, though shows more interest in the WoL's presence. The Hyur meets the Warrior of Light several times during their quest to put an end to the Dragonsong War, though once again chose to not participate in many of their battles.<br>
<br>
Upon the Warrior of Light learning the truth about [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Thordan_VII Archbishop Thordon VII], Koh'li openly protested raising arms against the church, though his pleas fell upon deaf ears. After Haurchefant's death, Koh'li apologies for not being there to help the Warrior of Light, and offers to assist him in putting an end to Thordon's plans. The Hyur joins the Scions in helping the Warrior of Light clear a path to the Aetherochemical Research Facility, though does not directly participate in the battle against [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Lahabrea Lahabrea] and [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Igeyorhm Igeyorhm], or the following conflict against Thordan.<br>

Aside from a few minor interactions with the Warrior of Light, Koh'li was mostly unseen, keeping to himself and taking a step back from the WoL's other escapades, until the arrival of the [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Warriors_of_Darkness_(Final_Fantasy_XIV) Warriors of Darkness]. The Hyur would often inquire about them as much as possible, questioning the Warrior of Light and the Scions about them. Once the Warriors of Darkness cross blades with the Warrior of Light and his friends, Koh'li reluctantly joins the Scions in assisting the Warrior of Light against them.<br>
<br>
After the Warriors of Darkness are defeated, Koh'li is not seen or heard from again until after the fall of Baelsar's Wall.

==Stormblood==
Koh'li resurfaces once again before the Warrior of Light, this time appearing in Kugane, explaining that he could not allow his friend to venture so far into enemy territory without them. Much to their companions' surprised, Koh'li offers to fight alongside the Warrior of Light against the Empire, claiming that Zenos yae Galvus is too dangerous to be left to his own devices. True to his word, Koh'li would adventure alongside the Warrior of Light, and assist in the liberation of not only Doma, but Ala Mhigo as well.<br>
<br>
During the negotiations with the Populares, Koh'li openly encouraged the peace between Doma and Garlemald, insisting that Varis was not the bloodthirsty hound his son was. When the Warrior of Light learns of [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Asahi_sas_Brutus Asahi sas Brutus]' true disposition, the Hyur is quick to dismiss it, claiming that one man's harbored hatred should not come between politics. After the failed negotiations, Koh'li was also quick to voice his disapproval of Alphinaud traveling to Garlemald as an embassador, though in the end there was no stopping the young Elezen.<br>
<br>
After learning of what had happened in The Burn, Koh'li once more offered to help the Warrior of Light find his lost friend, and travelled with him to the desolate land. While the search was unsuccessful, the Hyur pledged he would do what he could to help assertain Alphinaud's whereabouts, and departed on his own to look for the boy.<br>
<br>
As the Scions fell one by one to the strange phenomenom that plauged them and the Warrior of Light, Koh'li did his best to console the Warrior of Light, insisting he would continue to help them in any way he could. Koh'li, however, did not participate in the [https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Ghimlyt_Dark Battle of Ghimlyt], and would not reappear until Alisaie fell to the same blight that had taken so many of the Scions already, once again vowing to help in any way he could.<br>

==Shadowbringers==
A short time after the Warrior of Light arrives in The First, they find that Koh'li has also made his way to The First, insisting he got there the same way they did. While the arrival of an ally first appears promising, Koh'li insists that he wishes to go off on his own, and learn about The First, and perhaps find a way to send them both back to The Source. While the Warror of Light occasionally runs into Koh'li, the Hyur never sticks around for long, much to the annoyance of the WoL's allies.<br>

<spoiler>After the Warrior of Light defeats Emet-Selch, Koh'li requests to meet them at Zenith in the Churning Mists, a location Koh'li had visited many times. When the Warrior of Light arrives, Koh'li appears and states that he laments Emet-Selch's fate, but states that Emet-Selch brought about his own end. The Hyur then reveals that he too is an Ascian, formally introducing himself as Deudalaphon. The Ascian explains that he has lived multiple lives throughout his life, moving from body to body to experience life through the eyes of the lesser races of the Source and its thirteen shards.<br>
<br>
Deudalaphon also explains that he had abandoned his role to bring about the Rejoining centuries ago, opting to simply become a bystanding and witness the battle between the light and the darkness. Though insisting he is a neutral party, he does admit that his acts of aiding the Warrior of Light on certain occasions may have affected the balance between light and dark. He confesses in earnest that he has come to see the Warrior of Light as his friend, and he felt compelled to help him along the way Deudalaphon's lack of interrfearance also meant he did not aid of the Ascians that fought the Warrior of Light, who he also wishes they could have been spared. Deudalaphon then admits to the Warrior of Light that while he would not try to stop him in halting the Rejoining, he would no longer be able to fight at the Warrior of Light's side, having meddled far too much as it was. He also warns them that should the Rejoining be at hand, he would return to the aid of his fellow Ascians to resurrect Zodiark, though he expresses his hopes by that time the Warrior of Light will be by his side as opposed to being his enemy. With an uneasy truth revealed, Deudalaphon sits with the Warrior of Light to enjoy the sun rise over the Churning Mists, and tells the Warrior of Light that until that time comes, he will remain by his friend's side.</spoiler>

==Personality==
Koh'li is usually relaxed in his activities, whether clearing out dungeons, or taking on monstrous foes. This calm outlook on life extends to his daily routine as well, and can often be found lounging about various locations across Eorzea. Though more than capable of defending himself, he sees any form of combat as cumbersome and annoying, and often times resorts to letting others fight in his stead. While being a pacifist and rather lazy, he has shown on multiple occasions to fight selflessly for a cause he believes in.<br />
<br>
One of the Hyur's more unusual traits, however, is his fascination with the Garlean Empire. While most citizens of Eorzea view the Empire as a tyrannical army, Koh'li often questions if resisting them is truly best for Eorzea, often focusing on the technological advances of their Magitek machinery. This has often led to the scorn of others, along with several angry confrontations from those he manages to infuriate with his radical line of thought.<br />

<spoiler>After Koh'li reveals himself as Deudalaphon to the Warrior of Light, he acts much calmer and speaks in a slightly more refined manner, abandoning his more casual and cheerful way of speech. While he genuninely cares for the Warrior of Light and considers them his friend, he insists that should the Rejoining be nigh, he would side with his fellow Ascians to resurrect Zodiark. Despite his loyalty to both the Warrior of Light and the Ascians though, Deudalaphon refuses to aid either side in their struggle, reaffirming his neutral stance on the conflict between the light and darkness.</spoiler>
