If one word could sum up Khy'zen Vashai, it would be cocky.  Always up for a challenge, the roguishly dashing miqo'te can often be found hunting down the latest rumored and oldest legendary monsters. He's known for being an arrogant, womanizing, self-centered bastard, and he would probably drink to any and all the above.

It all began with a stone, or so the legend says. But the true story of Khy'zen Vashai actually begins much further back, where the story of every person throughout time has begun: with the parents. Among the Seekers of the Sun, there was one known as X'cien Tia, who dreamed of one day leading his own tribe. But he was not the strongest among his tribe, nor the swiftest, nor the smartest. He knew he would never rise high enough to lead the tribe, much less become a nunh, be it through battle or conquering territory. But maybe he didn't need to be all those things. After much planning, he eventually set off to form his own tribe, with himself as the leading nunh. But it was not to be. Despite promises of several females within the clan to leave with him, none ever came. Despondent and too ashamed to return, X'cien traveled to the nearby city of Ala Mhigo. It was there he met a beautiful dancer named Lhia Vashai. She never seemed to mind that he was a Seeker of the Sun, and he never cared that she was a Keeper of the Moon; his pride was gone, his former tribe was far away. What did it matter now? It was not long before Lhia gave birth to a healthy male cub, who they named Khy'zen.

X'cien tried to take care of Khy'zen the best he could, but the absence of Lhia drove him downward until he had fallen into gambling, alcoholism and spice. It wasn't until the threat of a Garlean invasion that he did the only thing left that he could for his son: he returned with Khy'zen to his former tribe. It was agreed that the tribe would look after the boy, but X'cien was still outcast to them. For several months he stayed on the outskirts of the tribe's territory, hunting and fending for himself, but he was always watching the distance, always seeming to wait for something. But whatever it was never came, as the fateful night eventually arrived when X'cien Tia was killed in his sleep as beastmen hunting party tried to invade the tribe in the middle of the night.

Like his father, he was never the strongest, and was in fact quite weak, a fact that quickly made him a target for the other young miqo'te within the clan. It began with simple teasing, of course. And soon teasing lead to taunting, and taunting turned into outright insults. And, as it always has, words soon gave way to fists. Having little love for the bastard child in the first place and seeing it as a way to toughen him up, the adult miqo'te in the clan did little to intervene. Eventually it seemed like Khy'zen was getting into fights daily. He never won any of those scraps, but he slowly learned how to not lose easily, and he never stopped fighting. That is, until one day when he took a hit so hard it broke his left shoulder. He never properly healed from that injury, leaving his left arm is significantly weaker than his right. Unable to put up a decent fight anymore, he avoided the other young miqo'te within the clan, and soon began going off on his own to scout for the tribe. Sometimes he would be gone a few weeks, sometimes a few months. This went on until Khy'zen had grown into a young man.

It was on one of these scouting trips that Khy'zen's story suddenly changed from following the path of his father. After a full years time, Khy'zen still hadn't returned to the home territory. A few search parties were sent out, but it wasn't long before he was simply presumed dead. That is, until one day when he walked into the middle of the tribe and challenged the primary nunh of the clan to battle. What happened next is not spoken of to this day. What took place couldn't be called a battle, a duel, or even a fight. It was not glorious. It was not honorable. Full of confidence and amused at the idea of the bastard challenging him, the nunh offered Khy'zen the first blow. And so, with a single move, Khy'zen instantly killed the nunh where he stood. At this point within a Seeker tribe, upon winning the duel, the challenger would take the nunh's place, having proved himself to be physically superior. Instead, Khy'zen spat in the faces of the entire tribe and walked away, never to return. No one knows what happened to Khy'zen during that year he was gone, and it's doubtful anyone ever will.

The arrival of the Calamity found Khy'zen out at sea when Bahamut struck Eorzea, and the tidal waves caused by the wrath of the primal easily wrecked the entire ship, leaving the miqo'te clinging to nothing more than a piece of driftwood. After washing ashore, Khy'zen eventually made his way to Limsa Lominsa, only to find much of the city ruined and destroyed. Khy'zen joined the people in helping to rebuild for a few months, but he wasn't much good with lifting due to his arm, and so after a time simply left in favor of fending for himself out in the wild.

Outwardly, Khy'zen is an over-confident, mischievous, self-centered miqo'te who loves having fun and doesn't think too much about the consequences of things. While most of the time laid back and easy going, he can be cynical and bitingly sarcastic. He does actually has a good sense of humor and loves having a good laugh, and anyone hanging out with him should be wary of pranks, especially when unlocked treasure chests are involved. He cares little for authority and does whatever seems to please him in the moment.

Beneath the surface, he only trusts a select few, and at the end of the day is really looking out for himself. More than anything, he hates feeling weak, which is why he's always looking for something new to challenge him and push him to his limits just so he can break them. At the same time, he's sympathetic to those who are weak and can't fend for themselves, and always seems to find himself going out of his way to help those people.

At his core though, Khy'zen really is a kind-hearted soul... probably.

While being raised in his Seeker tribe, Khy'zen was taught to believe in the Twelve gods of Eorzea, and without thinking too much about it became a devout follower of the pantheon, with Oschon the Wanderer as his guardian deity. Over time, however, he began to lose his faith as the hardships of his young life weighed down upon him. It wasn't until after the events of the Calamity that the miqo'te lost his faith in the Twelve completely. After all, what kind of guardians allow that much destruction in the world they're supposed to be protecting?

As far as his own beliefs, Khy'zen really only believes in himself and his own abilities. No longer allowing himself to be tied down by the rules and traditions of a tribe or anyone else, he does whatever he feels is best for him in the moment. Which isn't to say he has no morality: he just decides for himself what he believes is right and wrong and doesn't let others dictate it for him.

It was on one of these scouting trips that Khy'zen's story suddenly changed from following the path of his father. After a full years time, Khy'zen still hadn't returned to the home territory. A few search parties were sent out, but it wasn't long before he was simply presumed dead. That is, until one day when he walked into the middle of the tribe and challenged the primary nunh of the clan to battle. What happened next is not spoken of to this day. What took place couldn't be called a battle, a duel, or even a fight. It was not glorious. It was not honorable. Full of confidence and amused at the idea of the bastard challenging him, the nunh offered Khy'zen the first blow. And so, with a single, precise kick to the temple, Khy'zen instantly killed the nunh where he stood. At this point within a Seeker tribe, upon winning the duel, the challenger would take the nunh's place, having proved himself to be physically superior. Instead, Khy'zen spat in the faces of the entire tribe and walked away, never to return. No one knows what happened to Khy'zen during that year he was gone, and it's doubtful anyone ever will.

The arrival of the Calamity found Khy'zen out at sea when Bahamut struck Eorzea, and the tidal waves caused by the wrath of the primal easily wrecked the entire ship, leaving the miqo'te clinging to nothing more than a piece of driftwood. After washing ashore, Khy'zen eventually made his way to Limsa Lominsa, only to find much of the city ruined and destroyed. Khy'zen joined the people in helping to rebuild for a few months, but he wasn't much good with lifting due to his arm, and so after a time simply left in favor of fending for himself out in the wild.

To the casual onlooker, Khy'zen would likely appear to be an over-confident, mischevious, self-centered miqo'te who loves having fun and doesn't think too much about the consequences of things. While he can be cynical and bitingly sarcastic, he actually has a good sense of humor and loves having a good laugh. To that end, anyone hanging out with him should be wary of pranks, especially when unlocked treasure chests are involved. He cares little for authority and does whatever seems to please him in the moment.

Beneth the surface, he trusts next to no one, and at the end of the day is only really looking out for himself. More than anything, he hates feeling weak, and will do anything to prove to himself and others that he's not. That in turn is what drives him, which is why he's always looking for something new to challenge him and push him to his limits just so he can break them. At the same time, he's very empathetic to those who are weak and get picked on or bullied, and always seems to find himself going out of his way to help those people. This in turn makes him feel like he's being weak for helping those people, and so the cycle continues.

Anyone who knows him closely knows he has a lot of built up rage that he lets out through fighting, and if there's anything he loves most in the world, it's fighting.  At his core though, Khy'zen really is a kind-hearted soul, a fact which he hates about himself.
