A short, ragged and sunkissed Miqo'te Seeker with a thick plushy red tail. In short she is a prime example of a guttersnipe turned adult. Her hair is messy and her face often smeared with dirt or ash. It's clear that this young woman lives a very active lifestyle carrying a plethora of work and crafting related tools. However, off-work she can be seen in a simple brown tunic made for comfort and easy movement. It's during these times that agile frame can most often be noted. She's extremely quick and light on her feet, able to reach running speeds that would dazzle the average Eorzean. It is rare to see her carying any type of dedicated weaponry.

R'nella is very direct, even for a Limsan. If she hates you, she will spit at you. If she loves you, she'll give you a kiss. There's very little in terms of 'manners' around her personality nor any verbal filter. She can be either your best friend or an utter nuisance within the same group of people. Her manner of speech is typically Limsan as well, speaking with an enormously thick accent which causes any non-Limsan to have difficulties understanding her words. Not that those words are very educated anyway...

Born into a family of relative splendor and wealth, R'nella was the child of the pirate lord R'eren Tia and his boatswain, childhood friend and wife R'tala. Often just called 'Nella', the Miqo'te had little to complain about during her early years in life. The family owned a lavishly furnished estate in Eastern La'Noscea earned through R'eren's violent pirating campaign during his younger years. It was only after he 'retired' that he and R'tala decided to raise a child which resulted in Nella's birth.

As Nella grew older, so did R'eren and R'tala. As their lifestyles became more lavish, their guard was turned down. When Nella had just turned seven, the family's estate was attacked by her father's main rival. Through the quick actions taken by one of the family's handmaidens, Nella escaped the carnage. Though she hasn't seen her parents being taken captive by the rival pirates, she has presumed from that day onward that they have been killed in the carnage that followed. The estate was looted and burned to the ground.

Penniless and deeply distraught, Nella was brought to a small sanctuary dedicated to the guardian Nophica. This is where she was given refugee for the next few years. However, not being dedicated to children nor raising them, the attendants of the sanctuary could only offer board and lodgings to Nella leaving her to her own activities during most of the day and night. The young Miqo'te wasn't going to sit idle however. Although she involved herself in a plethora of mischief such as pickpocketing and thievery, the craftsman located at the sanctuary freely taught Nella a large array of skills including mining, fishing, weaving and woodcutting.

As Nella grew older, she slowly got involved into the wrong crowd which became her 'friends'. Gaining notoriety through thievery, their actions eventually grew more violent such as extortion and beatings. As the group decided to travel around La Noscea, they named themselves 'The Red Stripes'.

However, as the Maelstrom became more concerned regarding the uncontrolled crime spree of the Stripes, they eventually cracked down hard upon them and Nella was taken as a prisoner. Because her role was deemed limited, she was only 'punished' by a permanent red tattoo across her face that would 'brand' her as a member of this group for the rest of her life.

For this she has earned the nickname 'The Red Squirrel'. Nella serves the Maelstrom to the present day and has seen service on nearly every front of the war against the Garlean Empire. In more recent months, because of her remarkable service to the Maelstrom, she was asked to star as one of the leading ladies in the ''"Girls of the Maelstrom"'' calendar for the current year. Nella starred as the lady of the 'summer' and thus the sixth month of the year. Nella's life took a very dark turn as she followed 'The Red Stripes' over La Noscea and eventually beyond. Each member painted their faces in order to have one or more stripes on their face. The more stripes, the higher the rank within the group. Although Nella didn't involve herself into the actual beatings and violence, she did aid the group as a message courier, pickpocket and general pauper during their travels.

However, as the Maelstrom became more concerned regarding the uncontrolled crime spree of the Stripes, they eventually cracked down hard upon them and Nella was taken as a prisoner. Because her role was deemed limited, she was only 'punished' by a permanent red tattoo across her face that would 'brand' her as a member of this group for the rest of her life.

Shortly after Nella was 'branded', the Calamity took place which engulfed Eorzea into chaos. Couriers were invaluable as the traditional communication Aether lines were destroyed. Thus Nella filled a void with her trained lithe physique as a courier and started to work for the Maelstrom. Even though she still held a grudge against them for branding her, she definitely could use the gil and thus decided to not complain.

Over the years Nella's non-combative service in the Maelstrom was rewarded slowly but surely, rising through the lower ranks in an impressive manner, especially for one that doesn't actually 'kill' enemies of the Maelstrom. For this she has earned the nickname 'The Red Squirrel'. Nella serves the Maelstrom to the present day and has seen service on nearly every front of the war against the Garlean Empire.

Around her waist is a small leather shoulder bag through which an observant eye would notice that many small vials and bandages are contained inside. Furthermore she also carries short sword which seems close to a rapier but with slightly more weight behind it, seemingly for self-protection. Her complexion is quite pale for someone lurking about La Noscea and she looks a bit like a 'grey-mouse' or 'booky' due to her 'traditionally' styled glasses giving her an air of 'learned superiority'. Finally, she is rather tall for a Hyur, and she easily towers over smaller Miqo'te and shorter Hyur. While on duty however, she wears the Maelstrom colours proudly giving her a sense of authority and status.

Catherine’s personality appears to be quite reserved. She appears to be very kind towards her peers and can never been seen acting rude towards them. When not dealing with patients she can also be considered reserved but more in a somewhat ‘lecturing’ way. During these moments she can be considered quite cold and when she is in a particularly foul mood she can come across as arrogant. And for all the moments where she is kind or perhaps arrogant, there remains an air of doubt around her and can often be seen sighing while looking at places of magnificence or great importance in books, drawings or in person. There seems to be a hint of disappointment within herself of which only a few can unravel what she is actually disappointed about.

Although the family had their home in Gridania, most of the time during Catherine’s early life was spent in Quarrymill as this is where the family made their living as woodworkers and carpenters. Catherine had many nieces and nephews but no brothers or sisters as complications during the birth caused Catherine’s mother to remain cripple throughout the rest of her life.

When Catherine turned seven, she was expected to start aiding the family in their work. However, during her first few weeks helping her family by gathering branches and small pieces of wood, she was often encircled by dark Sylphs who were fond of bullying her. Although Catherine’s father often chased them away, they always came back. On a particularly rainy day, Catherine got separated from her family and once again was encircled by hateful Sylphs who wanted to pinch her with sharp sticks. It was at this moment that Catherine discovered the magic contained within her and caused the sylphs to be turned into stone for a few brief moments. When the Wood Wailers came to find Catherine, drenched in a ditch and in a frightened state, she told them what had happened and the Wailers were quick to ascertain that Catherine should receive aid from the Conjurer’s Guild. Although her family was thoroughly unhappy to see her go, Catherine saw this as a new adventure.

In the following years it almost seemed destined that Catherine was going to become a respectful member of the Twin Adders as soon as she would reach adulthood.

It was as if she felt guilty if she ever leaved Gridania and the Conjurer's Guild as they had taught her almost all the skills she had. She was often lectured about even having the mere idea of wanting to leave and wander the world on her own. And thus she slowly started to descent into finding and reading about arts thoroughly forbidden in the Conjurer’s Guild. She especially started to take note and interest regarding the tales from the lost cities of Amdapor and Mhach and how it’s people survived after the Sixth Umbral calamity with the aid of the Red Mage heroes. She sought out books and artefacts from these places wherever she could find them but these items didn’t come cheap. And thus, Catherine turned to less savoury methods of income.

While staying in Gridania and its less savoury parts, she overheard rumours of a Gil Counterfeiting Ring being organised by a group of skilled Conjurers. Although this was obviously a dangerous endeavour, Catherine decided that she –needed- the Gil extremely badly and that just about everything was fair game to get it. As such, Catherine sought out the members of the ring, eventually finding the Miqo’te [[Kisha Taluun]] who was the leader of the ring at that time. Catherine eventually won the trust of the Counterfeiting Ring and started to aid them in the creation of fake Gil for which she was compensated with actual real Gil in return. Although these few years proved to be –extremely- profitable for Catherine, the ‘game’ was eventually discovered by the Adders and all the ring’s members were arrested and persecuted. Although the leader of the ring was given lashes and two years of servitude, Catherine was more fortunate. Now at the age of 16, she was still considered a child and thus only received a light punishment: Exile for five years.

Though the income was meagre, it was still enough to be able to lend more books from the library of Ul'dah and continue her studies into Mhach and Amdapor. Though she wasn't an active member, living in close proximity to the Gladiator's Guild also allowed her to easily take fencing lessons on the cheap, further developing herself as she continued onto the path of the Red Mages.

Although Catherine's life cobbled on like a gentle stream as she held her shop, the world itself had other plans. With the Calamity laying waste to many parts of Thanalan and Ul'dah Catherine herself didn't come out without scars either receiving multiple injuries due to flying debris, putting her out of commission for several weeks as she tended to broken bones and flesh wounds. With her shop also laying in ruins, Catherine decided now was the time to move on. After being sufficiently recovered, she travelled onward to La Noscea, looking for new opportunities.

Catherine's career entered a different phase as she was part of the regiments which were send to Ala Mhigo to aid in the liberation campaign against the Empire. This allowed her to be as close to Mhach and Amdapor as possible and with her now considerable wealth of knowledge meant that she could perfect her trade further. Though her colleagues were rather surprised by her newly found strength and some rather concerned, the complaints soon fell silent as she served through the Ala Mhigo campaign with flying colours, using her powers to both defeat many Garleans in close-quarters combat as well as applying emergency first-aid to her injured comrades. Following the conclusion of the campaign, Catherine returned with her regiment back to Limsa Lominsa where she heard she would be transferred to an elite regiment. And thus a new journey began...
