Uther Leondegrance is the third child of the Ishgardian knight Agravain Leondegrance. Agravain gave all of his children common Hyur names, opposed to the typical names of Elezen nobility, to instill them with a sense of humility and empathy for the more unfortunate members of Ishgardian society, who were largely Hyur. Uther, like all of the four children in his family, was formally educated and made to squire for knights until he reached an age when he too could go into battle. For years, Uther fought against the Dravanian horde. It wasn't until his late twenties, after the death of his wife Igraine, that he began to question what he had been taught. As Ishgard refused to help the Grand Companies in their war against Garlemald, Uther stole away in the night to offer what assistance he could.

He arrived in Gridania just after the calamity, and dedicated his time to helping restore the city. He taught lancing techniques in their guild while he was there, but soon moved to Limsa Lominsa.

Years after arriving in Limsa Lominsa, Uther joined up with the outfit known as Misericorde. They were led by the eccentric Isaac Jacobi, and their methods were highly unorthodox. Uther reluctantly went along with the brutal killings carried out by the group in the name of freedom for Eorzea. After the war, Isaac Jacobi offered himself to Limsa Lominsan authorities for war crimes on behalf of the rest of the group. After two years of wandering aimlessly in Eorzea, the outfit was reformed by Clementine Whittaker under the guidance of Jacobi. Uther was hired again, but soon left to battle the Dravanian forces in Ishgard. Upon his return to Ishgard, he was generally ill-received by his old peers, but continued to fight under no one's jurisdiction.

Uther is a bit short for the average Elezen, and has lean muscle. He is quite strong for his size. His hair is a dull brown, and he usually keeps it in a ponytail or a bun. His eyes are similarly dull brown, and always darting from one detail to another. He has a scar on the left side of his face from an unknown injury, presumably one he suffered during his time as a knight in Ishgard. His complexion is pale, and his face is gaunt.

Uther Skystrider doesn't care about vanity. He will wear simple clothing, and mostly prefers forest greens or the blue of the Ishgardian flag. In battle he prefers chain and leather armor. He most often wears his inherited Drachen armor when battling with a spear. He can be convinced to wear heavy plate armor if the need arises, as well, though he feels restricted in it.
