==Character==

"Squandered is the potential of many, yet limitless is the potential I command. For Ishgard and Eorzea, let my efforts resound far and wide."

===General:===

With a passing glance, Varis Calder commands the discipline and strength of all those who were brought up in Ishgard’s knight orders were known for. It is easy to see the armor that he boasts and the gaze that he displays beneath it and believe him a cold, insufferable fool that sees only through the direction set upon him by the Archbishop, but that illusion is quickly discarded when taking more than a look as beneath the focused and goal-driven exterior that the heart within is bright and ready to protect the lands he calls home from whatever evil may bear down on it next.

===Name:===
:'''Given Name:''' Varis Calder
:'''Nicknames and Aliases:''' Throughout his travels, Varis has often been called knight, adventurer, and even dragoon by the common folk, taking absolutely no offense by the names. However uncommon, there are times when recognition gets the better of him and he is referred to as, “Varis Calder Siberys, of House Siberys.”

===Appearance:===

Tall among many of the commoners, Varis boasts a build that reflects a life sacrificed to ruthless training and discipline. He carries himself with the distinct gait of a man of military training and the nine-yard stare of those that have seen combat and witnessed their friends and allies cut down before them. Touched by the sun and blemished only with the scarring of previous battles, Varis can easily be described as a handsome man when not held inside the caress of armor that fails to portray the man within. Far be it that the man’s gaze held nothing besides the studious, watchful gaze of a soldier, as even within the troubled glances he may provide, there is beauty to be found if studied as his eyes reflect a rare grey-blue color that to some represents only harsh cold, but others may find comfort in its hue. Since leaving Ishgard, no more does Varis boast a neat and tidy head of hair but instead hair rests haphazardly upon his head as if cut by blade whenever having gotten too long in an uneven, disheveled look that could have turned out worse. Broad shoulders beset by the same muscle that lays siege to the rest of his frame is tirelessly worked to the brink of exhaustion as the man roams Eorzea gathering new stories, new victories, and new scars. A lone tattoo rests marred and slightly broken by scar-tissue over his heart, depicting the image of House Siberys: a dead, pale blue dragon impaled by lance, a white-crystal rose, the skull of a dragon, and a silvered gauntlet reaching upwards.

===Speech:===

Learned and taught throughout his life, Varis forgoes the slang and friendly drawl that so many of his people carry with them for a manner of speech that reflects his intentions and gets his point across with ease. The voice itself is collected and quiet with just a touch of the brutal intensity an Ishgardian knight is to command. It is hard to assume that the man’s quiet demeanor is from his rage, his lack of wanting to talk, or even his desire to not be paid any mind as his quiet tone reflects a calm demeanor that he carries throughout the majority of his life.

===Behavior:===

The edge and strict attitude of Ishgard have begun wearing thin from the man as the years have drawn on in his quest throughout Eorzea but have not been truly abandoned. Even still it is easy to see in the way that he treats individuals that there is still slight disdain for lower class citizens and his “lesser” but Varis has made grand improvement throughout his travels and through the blood that he has painted the beautiful green lands of Eorzea with: his own and the evils’ that he has faced in his trials. While the man may have a stringent lock and key upon negative emotions in attempt to mingle and meld with the people of Eorzea in a better manner, Varis cannot help but appear somewhat aloof or disinterested, even when showing a friendly side to him in the midst of conversation. He is easy to overlook in social situations when his interest is elsewhere.

All of these things are abandoned and cast off as soon as battle becomes apparent. The guidance of Ishgard returns to Varis in a flash as he bolsters the will and drive of his fellow soldiers by screaming praises of their looming victory to the skies, inspiring those around him to raise their swords and shields and join him in the fight. In the midst of battle, Varis continues on and holds himself to a standard that sets him apart from those around him, using his own actions and body as an inspiration for his fellow soldiers with the hope that they will see his actions, his vivacity, and his tenacity and swell their hearts with pride and courage.

Few have chipped away at the armor that surrounds the man, looking at him as little more than a wandering knight, but Varis’ loyalty knows no bounds and is as unwavering as the mountains. There is nothing that Varis loathes more than betrayal, believing the offense to be an unforgivable one. He believes that his life was granted to him so that he may give it back to Eorzea, as all who were raised within the bountiful gardens of House Siberys believe. In the question of relationships, Varis is a man of whimsy and hard to tie down, a true free spirit since being freed from the grasp of Ishgard. He believes that one day there will be a soul out there to whom he will give himself completely, but he believes there is a long journey laying before him that takes priority.

:'''Motivations:''' Honor, Glory, Renown, Legend, Pride, and seeing Eorzea live another day.

:'''Disposition:''' Calm, polite, friendly, distanced, and collected.

:'''Outlook:''' It is my responsibility to do what I can to live up to the legends of House Siberys and carve out my own. I will not be forgotten.

===Positive Personality Traits:===

Confident, sympathetic, heroic, intelligent, charismatic, upfront, loyal, level-headed.

===Negative Personality Traits:===

Aloof, superficial, prideful, conceited, glory-hound, obsessive, altruistic.

==Combat:==

An unrelenting force of nature that dives, sprints, and leaps throughout the battlefield brandishing spear and greatsword alike in the heart of the storm. Varis wastes little time in battle, hating the idea of drawing out combat as he seeks to end it as quickly and efficiently as possible. Learned in tactics and always looking for the high ground, Varis’ ruthless style of combat leaves for little error and allows only for a decided victor to walk away from the bloody aftermath.

Glory-seeking, even in the heart of battle, Varis always looks for the most dangerous foe to strike out at, leaving the weaker creatures to those more suited to the menial tasks as he pads his own list of stories. Even when focused and driven by the single-minded goal of striking out at the center of the enemy’s forces, Varis is always willing to help bolster the spirits of the soldiers around him and demoralize those he fights. With battle shouts, Varis reaffirms his allies of their impending victory.

==Tendencies:==
: ■ Varis loves to eat and while he would never admit it out loud, he views the gift of a meal purchased for another as one of the greatest gifts one person could give another.
: ■ He believes in honor above all.
: ■ He has no respect or sympathy for criminals, believing that there is always a way or someone out there willing to help you get on the right path.

==Relationships:==
===Family:===

:'''Orrick Morys Halstein Siberys:''' - Crippled. Raised by the tyrant Avere Siberys, Orrick’s upbringing was not a simple one. From the age he could hold a lance, he was training to take the helm of House Siberys and usher in a grand new age for the House. Avere raised Orrick with the stringent focus of creating the perfect Dragoon that would take the mantle of Azure Dragoon and bring honor to their family forevermore, regardless of the strife and agony it would bring upon Orrick. The Eye never resonated for Orrick and Avere retreated into solitude, leaving Orrick to handle the affairs of House Siberys. In the same manner that Orrick was raised, Avere Godwin Siberys and Varis Calder Siberys were raised with the same mentality, bringing nothing but their father’s disappointment.

:'''Lyanna Ylessa Siberys:''' - A strong and terrifying dragoon turned mother upon marrying Orrick Siberys. Her terror was not in her strength nor her skill but rather in her unwavering tenacity that would leave her struggling to stand and continuing to fight even when others collapsed and gave in.

:'''Avere Godwin Siberys:''' - Varis’ older brother and self-proclaimed “Hero of Ishgard.” Rather than following the teachings and techniques of the Dragoons before him, Avere brandishes sword and shield in the fight against dragons. His most notable accomplishment was the first dragon slain at his hand to which he took the plate of its skull and uses it now as his shield.

:'''Edgar Malcolm Cecil Siberys:''' - A frail and sickly boy, Edgar is a year younger than Varis and took to the teachings of books and scrolls rather than fighting dragons like his siblings. Out of all of the sons of Orrick Siberys, Edgar has strove to win the affections of his family through brain rather than brawn and has been named Orrick’s successor, much to Avere’s displeasure.

:'''Nicia Brianna Siberys:''' -The youngest out of all of Orrick’s children and by far the most terrifying. When she was born, Lyanna saw to it that Nicia would not be a frail princess left to dote upon other warriors as they ran off to battle. By the time she passed through the gateway to adulthood, the woman was a beauty that few Hyur in Ishgard matched. Although, no suitor dared to step forward, too afraid of the dagger-woman and none courageous enough to brave the volatile woman’s fury.

:'''Avere Nedrick Siberys:''' -Father to Orrick Siberys and the man who redefined the status quo of House Siberys. Rather than simply accepting the fact that there would always be someone better than him, Avere took a small band of dragoons and took the fight to the dragons. When the men left they were full of hope and brimming with courage. What returned, however, was nothing more than hardened warriors with a grim disposition ready to conquer all those who stood before Ishgard. While the stories may have grown to be far out of proportion, it is said that the company of men slew two hundred dragons in the year they were gone.
==History/Timeline==

:'''1550, Sixth Astral Era:''' Born to Orrick Siberys and Lyanna Siberys.

:'''1555, Sixth Astral Era:''' Nurtured primarily by Lyanna Siberys, told tales of the heroic Dragoons of old all to improve desire to become a legend in his own right.

:'''1556, Sixth Astral Era:''' Orrick Siberys began training Varis under the guise of playing “Slay the Dragon.” Taught by Orrick Siberys the history of Ishgard and the importance of their existence, reaffirming that Varis would become a legend among Ishgardians.

:'''1557, Sixth Astral Era:''' Ser Alberic meets Nidhogg in combat. Orrick’s training intensifies and Varis begins believing the propaganda that he would become a hero like no other. Varis begins spouting to both friends and family alike that he would become the next Azure Dragoon.

:'''1560, Sixth Astral Era:''' With the world thrown into chaos, Orrick Siberys left to help combat the evils that bared down upon them. During this time, Lyanna hired an instructor to teach both of her sons in both the military traditions of Ishgard and in the proper techniques of their Dragoon heritage.

:'''1562, Sixth Astral Era:''' Avere Godwin Siberys abandons his original instructor in lieu for a more refined, younger instructor who would push him to his true potential. Rather than abandoning his teacher like his brother, Varis continues to train with Ser Quentyn Reeve. With a strong influence on the basics, Varis pulled ahead of his brother who now served under the tutelage of a less experienced knight.

:'''1564, Sixth Astral Era:''' Mastering the basics and proving capable in preforming the techniques that were heirlooms to House Siberys, Varis began his cavalry training astride his first chocobo. With the turmoil in the world beginning to come to fruition, Varis strove to become greater so that he may one day be able to join the battles, make a difference, and write his own legend in the annals of history.

:'''1568, Sixth Astral Era:''' Battered and crippled, Orrick Siberys returns to Ishgard with a heavy heart and forced into retirement. In much the same way as his father before him, Orrick retreated to his chambers and hardly came from them.

:'''1568, Sixth Astral Era:''' Varis, now a man, has pulled ahead of his siblings in training and mastery of the techniques due to trust and steady progress under the tutelage of Ser Quentyn Reeve. Together, the two begin undertaking the preparations for sending Varis on his way to knighthood.

:'''1571, Sixth Astral Era:''' After years of preparation and restless training and service, Varis undertook the most difficult battle of his life. A dreading exercise that pushed his body to its limits and nearly claimed him from his own fears and hesitations. Entering into combat as a man, Varis claimed victory with his heart steeled as a mighty Dragoon.

:'''1572, Sixth Astral Era:''' With the conflicts around Eorzea boiling over, Varis took up arms with a small carde of dragoons to attempt to recreate the very same adventure his grandfather undertook before him. Throughout the year, the company of Ishgardian Knights slew dozens of dragons for the Holy See, no matter the insurmountable challenge before them. Pushed too far and wishing to return home, the company of dragoons left Varis for dead claiming the trophies of their turmoil and returned to Ishgard. Upon his return, Varis was met with scoffs and dishonor at every turn. Rather than continue to bring shame to House Siberys, Varis left Ishgard in self-imposed exile, taking with him only the Drachen Mail he earned throughout his years of service, his loyal chocobo that he raised himself, and enough money for what he thought would last him a month.

:'''00, Seventh Umbral Era:''' On the eve of the tragedy that would later be known as the Calamity, Varis had taken up with two sisters that had been traveling the roads connecting Ishgard to Gridania. It was only by his quick thinking and instincts that the three managed to survive the onslaught of destruction that pillaged the world around them.

:'''01, Seventh Umbra Era:''' In the year following the Calamity, Varis followed one of the two sisters back to Ul’dah where he would work with the craftsmen to help repair the cities and towns around the city-state in a more practical way than utilizing his lance or swords.

:'''02, Seventh Umbra Era:''' Around the city-state of Ul’dah, Varis Calder began making a name for himself as a man ready to help those in need for whatever they could manage to scrounge up, not in it for greed. From protecting merchants to further helping with repairs in any way that he could, he banded together with the rest of Eorzea in the restoration effort to repair the damages done by the Calamity.

:'''03, Seventh Umbra Era:''' Wanderlust claimed Varis and no longer was he content spending his days in the confines of Ul’dah. Taking the roads and plying his trade as a warrior and blacksmith in any way that he could, he made what money he needed to get by as he explored a world that he had never had the chance to see, as his previous life was consumed by Ishgard and his undying loyalty to it.

:'''04, Seventh Umbra Era:''' Lucretia Winter and Varis Calder begin their journeys together after they had parted ways in Ul’dah. Together the two travel to Limsa Lominsa and aid the city state in any way they could. Varis’ chocobo Tiamat dies during this time to a raider ambush.

:'''05, Seventh Umbra Era:''' Lucretia and Varis part ways after a year of adventuring together as she returns to Ul’dah. Varis reluctantly finds a new companion in the chocobo gifted to him from the breeders in Gridania after his long-standing aid to their home. He names the chocobo Cormyr after a Dragoon he remembered his mother telling him stories of when he was younger. Together, Cormyr and Varis begin adventuring throughout Eorzea in search of work while aiding its people in any way they possibly could, beginning to do freelance work for the Grand Company, The Twin Adders.

:'''06-07, Seventh Umbra Era:''' Varis has begun sending letters to his sister Nicia in secret under the penname Gylbart Lancaster. Maintaining the majority of his free spirit and fear of tying his lance in with a group of people, Varis has continued to roam the lands of Eorzea in search of work, beginning to find it more and more difficult to find such work with the resurgence of powerful Free Companies tied to the three Grand Companies. Reluctantly, Varis begins his search for a suitable, trustworthy Free Company that would cherish the skills that he brought and not allow history to repeat itself with leaving him in the dirt, betrayed, and dishonored.
