=== History ===

Gestahl was born in the City-State of Ala Mhigo in 1552 of the Sixth Astral Era in a large family. In the year 1557, the Imperial VIIth legion launched a campaign to capture Ala Mhigo. After months of fighting many citizens knew the end was drawing near. The fighting displaced thousands of Hyur, among them Gestahl, his mother and brother. Only five years old, Gestahl was confused to what was happening, why they were leaving home, why Papa wasn't with them. The mass exodus of refugees became known as the "Third Great Hyuran Migration". It was a brutal journey and no place for a young child. As their mother was a nurse she tended to many of the sick and wounded on the journey, leaving her little time to raise her two sons. Saul, who was only twelve years of age at the time, found himself raising and taking care of his younger brother in the brutal wastelands. A child forced to grow up years ahead of his time.

Salvation was at hand when the refugees spotted the silhouette of the grand city of Ul'dah on the horizon. Only half of the refugees lived to see the destination.

Throughout his childhood, Gestahl would accompany his older brother around the streets of the city, familiarizing himself with all parts of Ul’dah street life.
Once Saul reached the age to enlist in the Flames, Gestahl rarely saw his brother. While his brother trained day in and out, Gestahl began to wander off on his own more.

One day he came across a strange robed Elezen who looked to be a few years older than he. With dark grey skin and bright purple hair, it wasn’t hard for him to stick out in a crowd. Gestahl noticed that he seemed lost and offered his assistance. He learned that the Elezen’s name was Arzota, a recently accepted student of the Thaumaturgist Guild. Gestahl, always curious about magic, guided Arzota around Ul’dah, showing him where the Ossuary was located and where the sights and sounds were in the city.

Over the years the two became good friends. While Gestahl was attempting to make some gil in the streets, his friend would be studying within the Ossuary. Gestahl’s interest in magic only grew more and more as he got to hear about his friend’s studies. Arzota even let him borrow his old books to read and to study.

The pressures of the Garlean Empire started to be felt throughout Eozorea. At first it was his brother. Saul was deployed with the Flame in an engineering unit on the front lines.

Next came Arzota. The need to match the Garlean Magitek weapons was met with Eozorean magic, every apprentice able to hurl fire was deployed north.

A vacuum was created in the city when all the able bodied men and women were deployed. Trivial issues began to dominate the political landscape in the city. Month after month Gestahl would watch the sky and see the red moon grow brighter and brighter. With only a handful of Brass Blades around to protect the populace, the Syndicate took on a larger responsibility for security. The city began to crumble from within.

Then came the Calamity.

Ul’dah was left battered, thousands of people went missing. Among those was Gestahl’s mother. With no friends, family, home or hope left he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with the unbearable pain.

He resigned himself to death whenever it would come soonest. He spent days at a time locked in his room. Gestahl was down and out. That was until a curious letter slid itself out of one of Arzota’s old tomes…

..an opportunity to study magic.

=== Behavior ===

Gestahl on the exterior comes off as very cold and distant. Having lost many people in his life, he is more-so scared to make friends or acquaintances. Having to mostly rely on himself or his brother growing up, he will rarely ask for help or assistance with anything out of arrogant pride. He intentionally tries to keep people from getting to close to him personally out of fear of future loss.

The persistent few who have broken past his exterior have noted he is actually a very caring and sweet person. Women who have tried to make romantic passes toward Gestahl have met with no luck.

''Dearest Brother Gestahl,

I know it has been many months since I have written, I did not want you to fear me gone or otherwise. However, things are changing here at home. Brother, I am happy that you left home at a young age. Your memories aren’t as clear to see what horrors have befallen our Ala Mhigo.

The very nature of our fight against the Garleans is even changing. I pray for the days when the resistance was about recruiting sons and daughters of Ala Mhigo and taking up arms against our occupiers. It is hardly the case anymore.

Our campaign of propaganda, hit and run attacks, roadside bombings, and assassination brought violence to our streets once again but we kept the Garleans constantly reeling. We…we actually thought that we might be able to drive them out if we kept up the pressure. The people used to look to us as the hand of Rhalgr himself, sweeping away the Empire from our ancestral lands.

It was only a matter of time before they stepped up reprisals. Starting a few moons ago, the Garleans were making midnight arrests and executions of any suspected to harbor support for our resistance. Remember the Hoedeck family ? You played with their daughter Tara when you were really young. All shot dead in the street in front of everyone. They had nothing to do with us or even helped us….bastards just wanted to send a message to any resistance sympathizers. The Garleans didn’t allow anyone to move the bodies from the street for two weeks…

They are even successfully turning Ala Mhigans against each other like beasts. With all the bloodshed in the streets the Garleans have established a “Citizens Patrol”. It makes me sick to my gut brother, the Garleans train citizens of Ala Mhigo to act as the paramilitary arm of the Occupation. My block commander thinks these Patrollers are worse than Garleans, willing to brutalize their own kin at the request of a foreign overlord. But… I see why some of our kinsmen would consider doing such a thing. 20 years being occupied by Garlemald and we finally have a chance to police ourselves for once…

I can’t say what we are doing is any better Gestahl, I really can’t. My “battalion” is too few in number to fight and our leaders are getting desperate. We are starting to become monsters ourselves. I’ve lost too much of my own humanity just by the horrors and atrocities I have witnessed...

Things are hardly as I thought.

I’m write you this because I cannot sleep or eat over what has been done. It weighs too heavily on my conscience. The Citizens Patrol were set to have a large ceremony in an auditorium for their very first class of recruits. About 200 young Ala Mhigan men and women all set to graduate, some as young as fourteen it seemed, all in uniform. The Garleans set this event up to be more of a propaganda rally than anything. One or two Garlean officers were to be there presiding, all the families of the fresh recruits to be in the stands watching, cheering them on.

My block commander ordered the event bombed. I was to assemble the device.

Do you remember old colorful Mrs. Baluif, the sweet Pre-academy teacher? After her granddaughter was killed by the Garleans she was never the same kind old woman. She volunteered to carry out the attack.
None of the security questioned her or her rucksack she was bringing to the event. Most of the guards had been taught by her as young children…

I can still hear them scream brother. My firecrystal bomb tearing through the stands and flames engulfing that auditorium. Just that horrific roar as the heat met with the cold dry air... If the explosion didn’t kill them, the massive fire wave burned them all alive. Watching from a nearby spire I saw the flames quickly engulf the auditorium, we could hear all the screaming. Then the building collapsed. So many inside were my friends before this war…

The mission was considered a complete success. When I confronted my Commander about our shifting aims
He just looked at me with a stone cold face and said this to everyone.

“What side are we on? We’re on the side of the demons. We’re the evil men in the gardens of the twelve sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I’m surprised you didn’t already know that?”

This war is getting more and more complicated Gestahl. I do not know how the Garleans will respond to that attack. I fear that all of us may pay a dear price for it. I don’t even know what side I am on anymore. I want to leave this place and be with the last of my family. Don’t forget that Gestahl, it’s not about where you are from. It is about family and friends. I don’t have any of that here. Please, please at least for me, stop consuming yourself withal the guilt and hate. There is much more to life worth living than finishing with a glorious death.
You are still my little brother and I wish I was there to look over you.
Stay strong for me.

I love you Brother,''
=== History ===

Gestahl has been seen spending much time in the HQ Warehouse used by his free company. Some journeymen that have noticed the apprentice asleep at his desk with old tomes spread about, notes about the crystals of Hydaelyn and a link with the interdimensional rift.

Another rumor is that Gestahl was a paramour against his will for a member of the Syndicate when he was much younger.

It is rumored that VonSchlichtenCo donates a steady supply of parts and goods to the Ala Mhigo Resistance. Smuggling across the border has become much more difficult.

An overheard Conversation at the Mizzenmast Inn revealed Gestahl to be studying something involving turban-clad knights able to enchant their own blades with magic.
Read Recent Letter from Saul to Gestahl
<spoiler>

I’m about to write you this because I cannot sleep or eat over what has been done.

=== History ===

=== Behavior ===

=== Affiliations ===

Gestahl is an apprentice of the Tower of Mysterium, a society of Wizards and Magi.

His brother Saul is a fighter in the Ala Mhigo Resistance. He writes Gestahl regularly. Garlean Frumentarii have been made aware of this and have started to secretly observe Gestahl and his friends.

His small trading company our of Limsa Lominsa, VonSchlichtenCo, employs five people and is invovled in metals and material selling.

=== History ===

=== Behavior ===

Gestahl on the exterior comes off as very cold and distant. Having lost many people in his life, he is more-so scared to make friends or acquaintances. Having to mostly rely on himself growing up, he will rarely ask for help or assistance with anything out of arrogant pride. He intentionally tries to keep people from getting to close to him personally out of fear of future loss.
Gestahl, always curious about magic, guided Arzota around Ul’dah, showing him where the Ossuary was located and where the sights and sounds were in the city.
The pressures of the Garlean Empire started to be felt throughout Eezorea. At first it was his brother. Saul was deployed with the Flame in an engineering unit on the front lines.

=== History ===

Gestahl was born in the City-State of Ala Mhigo in 1552 of the Sixth Astral Era in a large family. In the year 1557, the Imperial VIIth legion launched a campaign to capture Ala Mhigo. After months of fighting many knew the end was drawing near.

The pressures of the Garlean Empire started to be felt throughout Eezorea. At first it was his brother. Saul was deployed with the Flame in an engineering unit on the front lines.

=== Behavior ===

The persistent few who have broken past his exterior have noted he is actually a very caring and sweet person. Women who have tried to make romantic passes toward Gestahl have met with no luck.
=== History ===

Gestahl was born in the City-State of Ala Mhigo in 1552 of the Sixth Astral Era in a large family. In the year 1557, the Imperial VIIth legion launched a campaign to capture Ala Mhigo. After months of fighting many knew the end was drawing near.

The pressures of the Garlean Empire started to be felt throughout Eezorea. At first it was his brother. Saul was deployed with the Flame in an engineering unit on the front lines.

=== Behavior ===

The persistent few who have broken past his exterior have noted he is actually a very caring and sweet person.

=== Affiliations ===

Gestahl is an apprentice of the Tower of Mysterium, a society of Wizards and Magi.

His brother Saul is a fighter in the Ala Mhigo Resistance. He writes Gestahl regularly. Garlean Frumentarii have been made aware of this and have started to secretly observe Gestahl.

His small trading company our of Limsa Lominsa, VonSchlichtenCo, employs five people and is invovled in metals and material selling.
=== History ===

Gestahl was born in the City-State of Ala Mhigo in 1552 of the Sixth Astral Era in a large family. In the year 1557, the Imperial VIIth legion launched a campaign to capture Ala Mhigo. After months of fighting many knew the end was drawing near.

The pressures of the Garlean Empire started to be felt throughout Eezorea. At first it was his brother. Saul was deployed with the Flame in an engineering unit on the front lines.

=== Behavior ===

The persistent few who have broken past his exterior have noted he is actually a very caring and sweet person.

=== Affiliations ===

Gestahl has been seen spending much time in the HQ Warehouse used by his free company. Some journeymen that have noticed the apprentice asleep at his desk with old tomes spread about, notes about the crystals of Hydaelyn and a link with the interdimensional rift.
Most of the reception to them have been dismissive assuming its just another one if the pair's tall tales.
