Ulic started training her as soon as she was old enough to use a sword, so that she could defend herself and earn a living. "A man or woman with a strong sword arm never goes hungry," he often told her. Yet all around her were men and women, strong and able-bodied - and all in abject poverty, barely scraping. Her father's statements rang hollow, and as the years passed, they became more and more distant from one another, as Rowan's pessimism increasingly drove him to anger.
