Maelstrom Foreign Levy 81st Company GENERAL INFORMATION VYNCENT TANNER is a former Maelstrom enlisted soldier, having served with the Grand Company of his city-state for eight cycles. After receiving an other than honorable discharge, he made his way as a sell sword and mercenary for hire. In this line work of he created quite a name for himself, mostly that of a man to go to when you needed a job done. His prowess and skill in combat, most notably with the two handed axe, is well known across the realm, mostly to those having dealings with ones in his line of work. Fate saw his path cross with the 81st Foreign Levy, and he founds reasons to join the ranks of the Free Company, which he has served with ever since. Recent events, and helpful friends with allies in the right places, have seen him reinstated to his former rank in the Maelstrom, preparing for a dangerous reconnaissance mission into the heart of Garlean held territory, the fallen city of Ala Mhigo . APPEARANCE TANNER'S style of dress is one of comfort and practicality, the majority of the time. Simple, loose fitting leathers and garments, often equipped with some form of padding or light protection. On rare occasion he has been known to step up his attire, though the events or company must be deserving of such a thing. On the battle field he is clad in armor from head to toe. When wielding his great sword, his armor is of the medium variety, jet black and fitted to allow for ease of movement when wielding his second weapon of choice. When his preferred method of destruction is in hand, he dawns his custom armor of the bear, looking every bit as a menacing beast, clad from head to toe in thick armored plating, truly defining the roll of what a tanky, front line warrior should be. PERSONALITY Fierce. Loyal. Unrelenting. Tanner, as he goes by to most, is slow to open up, and even slower to trust, sometimes mistaken as arrogant or a bit full of himself, though he doesn't intend to come off as such. Often taken as rude and heartless, he's very stubborn and set in his ways, not overly concerned with upsetting others by his words or actions. He is confident in his abilities and is always willing to lend aid to those in need, whether his demeanor reflects that or not. He'd not leave someone in trouble to fend for themselves, more than willing to charge in to battle and lend a hand. A member of the Maelstrom since his 18th name day, Vyncent rose quickly to the rank of Sergeant, though his promotions came to a sudden halt as he began to have more difficulty taking orders he deemed reckless or careless from younger officers with less experience than he, eventually leading to an other than honorable discharge from the Maelstrom. He believes one can only learn so much from study on battlefield tactics, and the real knowledge is gained on the field, through experience, earned in sweat and blood, along with his respect. Axe, swords, the lance, all are weapons of war that he is more than comfortable wielding, the axe being his preferred tool of the trade. More often than not he can be seen leading the charge, swinging his war axe around wildly to strike fear into the hearts of his foes, before colliding with them on the battle field in a clash of steel and Highlander fury. Ranged: Tanner knows how to make use of a bow, though he's had little experience with the ranged weapon in combat. He's undergone basic firearms training from his time with the Maelstrom, though he never took a liking to the weapons, preferring a much more intimate and close up encounter on the battle field. Magic: Tanner's grasp on aether manipulation is mostly one of self preservation, skilled in channeling his inner Wrath and Abandon, enabling him to focus his aether to increase his health and stamina, heal minor wounds, or unleash devastating blows on his enemies. "Vivian" Made from an unknown composition of metals, Tanner spent nearly ten cycles in savings to afford the craftsmanship of such a weapon,sparing no expense on his preferred weapon of choice. Named in honor of the finest and most talented lady of the night to ever work the streets of Limsa Lominsa. Tanner saught it fitting to honor the woman who, over the years, he had grown very close to, the relationship stretching far beyond that of physical interactions. He is prideful in her, and wields the weapon as such, treating it with great care. "Keaira" Crafted and forged by a woman that has become very dear to him, Onuma Ahntifi, made of a durable and rare alloy found in the Coerthas Western Highlands by Tanner and Twinning. The gift is one of his most prized possessions, razor sharp all around, engraved with the name he found most fitting of such a magnificent weapon. Keaira, his first true friend upon joining the 81st. "Wren" Little is known about this seldom seen weapon, having found little use in Tanner's hands since joining the ranks of the 81st. It is known only as Wren, nothing more. "Little Shit" A simple, steel dagger he picked up in Ul'dah. There is nothing note worthy of this simple weapon. He can be seen with it mostly when in casual attire. The name was given in light of meeting one of the few Lalafells among his company, Crystal. She is the weapons name in his eyes, forever and always, a Little Shit. LIST OF FAMILY MEMBERS Ophelia Tanner, Mother. ( – ✖ ) Last words: "It's your fault son. If not for you, Garin would still be alive." Tanner always was a mamma's boy, as a child. The woman was everything in his eyes, raising not only himself, but his older brother and younger sister as well, mostly on her own. Until the day his older brother died, she was what he loved most in the world. Until she placed the blame for his death on him, and said she never wanted to see him again. Orn Tanner, father. ( – ✖ ) Last words: "You're dead to me. Ya fuckin hear me boy?! Dead!." Orn Tanner, father to Vyncent, was never around much during his childhood. He ran an often unsuccessful fishing business that kept him out to sea for moons at a time. Tanner's relationship with his father was rocky at best, angering him greatly when he chose to up and leave Limsa Lominsa, and the failing family business, with dreams and aspirations of joining the Maelstrom. To this day, after learning of his eldest sons death, Orn will you tell you he has no sons, and that the family blood line ends upon his last breath. Garin Tanner, Older Brother. ( – ♥ – ❖ ) Last words: ”Take care of them for me...help my boy know what it is to be a man.” Tanner's older brother, Garin, was also his best friend, mentor, and the greatest man he's ever known. He idolized him when the two were younger, wanting to do everything Garin did, and be just like him in everyway. As the years progressed, and the two grew older, fate saw them working hand and hand as Mercenaries out of Ul'dah. A fated mission that Tanner regrets to this day, led the pair to the Coerthas Central Highlands, where unfortunate circumstances led the two to battle with the feared and despised dragon, Skavog, a vile and cannibalistic creature known to feed on its own kind. The battle saw the dragon driven away, but not without Garin being mortally wounded in the fray, dying in his younger brothers arms . Wren Tanner, Younger sister. ( – ♥ – ✖ ) Last words: ”Gods damn it Vyncent...you're the only brother I have left! Don't shut me out!” Tanner's younger sister, Wren, was one that he cherished and adored when they were younger. He was always overprotective of her, and Wren hated him for it, driving off any boy that even looked like they wanted to speak to her, aside from himself and Garin. The two kept in touch, writing to each as often as they could when Tanner joined the Maelstrom, always updating each other on their lives. After his discharge, before taking up life as a mercenary, the two were together often, causing mischief and all sorts of trouble on the streets of Limsa. That all changed when Garin died, Wren, like her mother and father, held Tanner responsible, and walls quickly rose between them. The siblings had not spoken since news of Garin's death, until quite recently, when Wren travelled to the home of the 81st to try and make amends with her only remaining sibling, talks that did not end as she had hoped. I just tend to only add these as necessary for those who make a real impact on Tanner, and descriptions are purely based upon in character experiences and opinions! ( – ♥ – ✔ ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "She's a fighter...and a highlander woman. Hells, what else matters?" Tanner met Wynter shortly after joining the 81st, and did not give off the best impression, leading the two to never speak again, until just recently. They've shared increasingly longer conversations with each meeting, learning a little more about the other in the process. It's obvious that physically, Tanner enjoys every bit of the woman, though what may not be obvious, to him or the ninja master, is that they share a lot more in common than one might think. Tanner expects to learn more of her in their time together with the 81st. Brielle Ashenfist, Fire Tits. ( – ♥ – ● ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "Uh...she's pretty good with that magic stuff, fire especially. And she's got nice tits.." Tanner wasn't fond of this woman when they first met, despite being a Highlander that's easy to look at. The two rarely spoke or interacted, likely from his gruff demeanor or dick headed tendencies. Despite that, he's seen her abilities in combat, and while he knows next to nothing about magic, watching a woman wield fire the way she does, makes him all warm inside. She's warmed herself, if only slightly, since joining in on a night of drinking games at the Drowning Wench, and Tanner think she has the potential to be worth getting to know more in the future, plus tits. Crystal, Little shit. ( – ✔ ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "Little shit, such a little shit.." Tanner's had little interaction with the Lalafell known as Crystal. His genuine thought on the entire race is that they are more of an annoyance than anything, outside of a select few who have proven otherwise to him during his times as a Mercenary, or on the fields of battle with the Maelstrom. Despite being such a tiny little runt, the woman has quite a large pair of balls, metaphorically speaking that is, in Tanner's eyes. She's showed no fear of him, and even had the gall to tell the entire Free Company that he may or may not have peed in the hot tub after a night of binge drinking, despite the fact that he 'could' squash her like a bug. He won't, he like's her spunk. So much that he named his dagger after her nickname. Little shit. Fyrilsunn Fiandoensyn , Old Man,Gramps. ( – ✔ ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "The Old Man? He's just that, fucking old. Don't let the age fool ya though. I'd bet he'd barely break a sweat kickin the shit out of you." Tanner met the Old Man on his first outing with the 81st, and has continued to be impressed by his combat skills ever since. The two likely could care less for each other outside of the realm of combat, but Tanner has no problem admitting when he meets a fellow warrior that knows what to do in the thick of battle. They've shared a few drinks more recently, and Tanner learned more details than he care to knew concerning the aging Roe. At the end of the day, he's good people in Tanner's book, and he'd go to battle with him any day. Keaira Twinning, Twiggy. ( ♥ – ✔ – 🔒 ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "Onuma aside, she's the only one who gave a damn when I first joined. The only one that tried. The only one that showed any inkling of an effort. She's earned my trust,respect,and gratitude. I'll be there for her, always." Keaira Twinning, aka Twiggy, Tanner's first, and closest friend among the 81st. She's been a thorn in his side since the first sun they met, prying, poking, prodding away at him. Always questions with her, always needing answers. And she's chipped away at the walls he's spent cycles building up ever since. The two get along strangely well, despite their differences in personality and opinions on things. If not for her, Tanner would have likely left moons ago, after, despite her conflicts on the matter, she refused to let him go alone, helping to put an end to the dragon that took his older brother's life nearly two cycles ago. He felt he owed her for that,by at least trying to fit in, and giving a damn about the other members of the 81st. Slowly that's happening, and he has her to thank for it. Not many know, or understand what the two share, writing it off as some fling or something physical. Not many get the chance to know what a friendship as strong theirs is like, either. Khairen Tumet, Guy with the Face, Onuma's pet dick, Karen. ( – ✔ – 🔃 ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "Guy with the face? Yea Karen...chick name. I know him. You wanna fight about it?" Tanner doesn't really know what to make of this guy. He's friendly, too damn friendly, and he's tried hard to be his friend, too hard. He only decided to give the man a chance after learning of Onuma's affections towards him, and he's been regretting that decision more and more with every meeting they have. Recently, Karen joined Tanner on a training exercise in Mor Dhona, taking on a few platoons of Garlean soldiers. He thinks the guy is ambitious with an axe, but that he still has a lot to learn. As long as he sticks to his word, and keeps Onuma safe while Tanner is away, he just might show him a thing or two. Unless he gets his horse pregnant, something Khai is fascinated by, and a proposal he made so that he too, could one day have a horse like Tanners.Tanner would likely try to murder him if that ever happened. Mizuki Hagane, Bath girl. ( – ♥ ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "She's got an ass on her,if you can get past that tail.." Tanner knows nothing of this poor, poor girl who had the unfortunate chances of bumping into him one day at the 81st's estate in the Mists. In brief conversation, she offered to give the Highlander a bath, and he's been fixated on that ever since. Onuma Ahntifi, Kitten,Numa. ( – ♥ – ✔ – 🔒 ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "Numa? Love her. She's like my little sister, cept she's got a tail." Onuma Ahntifi, the first member of the 81st Tanner crossed paths with on his hunt for vengeance in the Coerthas Central Highlands. He was searching for 'his' dragon, she was searching for cultists. The two happened upon the same hunting grounds, neither refusing to leave it for the other. Shit happened, as it often does in Eorzea, throwing the two into battle against what seemed like an endless Dravanian hoard. In the end, only Tanner and Onuma remained standing. She on the other hand, was injured, and refused any assistance from the highlander. A stubborn ass, like himself, right from the very start. He was attracted to her right off the bat, something no other Miqo'te before him had been capable of doing. As time progressed however, and the two spoke more often, or fought along side each other in battle, his feelings shifted to that of a brotherly love for the woman. She's been there for him on more than one occasion, and the two have shared personal talks that he wouldn't imagine telling another. Aside from being one hell of a fighter on the battlefield, she's also his smith of choice when it comes to weapons, the creator of his second love in life, the red hued great sword he often wields in battle. There's nothing Tanner wouldn't do for Onuma, or to keep her safe. He'll miss her greatly in the coming moons, on the road to Ala Mhigo. Rhesh'ir Zhwan, Captain. ( – ● – 🔃 ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "He's the fucking boss? Don't know much else about him..." The Captain, Rhesh'ir Zhwan, leader of the 81st Foreign Levy, and Tanner's boss. Tanner knows mostly nothing about the man, aside from the recent loss of his wife in the Dravanian Forelands. Tanner has a rocky history with officers associated with the Maelstrom, so he's been very slow to come to a conclusion on just how he feels about the man. He's shown himself competent in battle thus far, and his plans haven't been entirely a stretch from what Tanner himself would come up with. And the man doesn't drink, so Tanner has heard, something he himself can't explain or understand, though he clearly doesn't know the Captain's reasonings. To date he's on the fence with his personal thoughts on the man, though he'll continue to respect the rank to the best of his abilities. Senelle Silverlight, Bitch. ( – ♥ – ✖ – 🔃 ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "Senelle? Don't give two shits about her...she made sure of that." Senelle Silverlight, a respected woman, loved by many, just not Tanner. The two had no interaction upon his joining the 81st, until the night he returned home with Twinning, wounded and bleeding, yet successful none the less, from slaying the dragon that had taken his brother's life. Senelle was outraged by this, more so at the fact that he had dragged Twinning along, placing her in such danger, but at the perceived foolishness of heading off alone. Her words were not to him, though he heard enough from the his chair at the bottom of the stairs to write her off, as it seemed she had done him. Aside from the occasional straight face, or grunt, he's mostly not even acknowledged her presence. Lately, he's debate giving her a second chance, not because he's 'that' guy, but he's seen how much she means to others in the 81st, Twinning most of all. Time will tell if the two ever get beyond where they are now. Despite all of this, Tanner would still knock knees with her given enough alcohol. She may be a bitch in his skewed view, but she's by no means unattractive. Legs for days... Syrress Detilderan, Green Eyes. ( – ♥ – ✔ – 🔃 ) Tanner’s Thoughts: "She's a rare find...can't say I've met anyone like her. Easy on the eyes too." Nearly every time Tanner returns from battle, or some outing gone wrong, Syrress, or Syr as she goes by, has most always been the one to patch him up. There first meeting didn't go over to well, as Tanner took a swipe at her backside. Instead of the smack he was expecting, he got a three bell lecture instead on how to treat to a woman, especially one that was tending to his wounds. He never wants to suffer through that again, and has mostly behaved in her presence in the company infirmary. The two have spoken very little during these patch up sessions, until just recently, as Tanner has opened up about his upcoming plans with the Maelstrom. Syr has been a good listener, great even, allowing the man to speak for hours on the topic, as well as other things he holds close and personal. Their last conversation turned to religion, something Tanner has never been openly found of, but he can appreciate how she went about, merely discussing the Twelve, and pointing out which traits of the Deities teachings that she sees in him. She not once tried to thrust any of her beliefs on him, and he can respect that. It just may have turned the knob on a door shut long ago.
