BASIC INFO

Kenji, or Ken as those close to him call him, can almost always be found working on a new invention or improving an already existing one. His love of creating new things is only matched by his desire to constantly grow and learn. While often shy and overly polite he loves to meet new people.

HISTORY

Kenji was born to a lavish family in Othard. For several generations the families position has been in a state of decline causing the heads of the family to push their descendants to strive for power and prestige. Growing up with a family with five other siblings Kenji was often placed in situations of competition. As the second born son he was never intended to inherent the family estate and as such was groomed to join the warrior caste, to bring prestige to his family through exploits of war. Much like his other siblings Kenji would have ended up entitled and power mad. The only reason this failed to happen was due to a gardener working at the estate grounds. Kenji became impressed by the strange tools and objects this mad used and approached him on several occasions.

PERSONALITY

Ren is a friendly lad, always up for a conversation and a laugh. He's met a variety of people in his lifetime, from hardened Maelstrom captains with a fondness for sweet alcoholic beverages to a pretty little miqo'te who nearly broke his ankle on their first meeting. Because of this, he is very open-minded when meeting people and can usually read people's body language well. He always tries to be polite, remembering what his mother told him, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." His friends however are at mercy to his playful teasing and jokes. He's always trying to please people and make them happy and has a tendency to makes promises even though he's not always sure he can keep them.

Ren is usually be a huge flirt, compliments and sexual innuendos spilling out of his mouth whenever he's in the proximity of someone he likes. Ren is quite carefree and happy-go-lucky, but as he matured he has become a lot less reckless, avoiding things that could be unnecessarily bothersome. He only goes out of his way to help with friends and only acts on impulse depending on the situation. His eager-to-please attitude makes him quite easy to influence. He can be stupidly stubborn when it comes to light-hearted competitions, refusing to budge when it comes to admitting defeat. He tries his best to view situations with a cautious and observant mindset, but can come across as hesitant and a bit of a coward when faced with things he is unsure about.

He has grown wary of those who seem too kind or selfless, associating those types of people with his deceased lover, Talan. Ren believes one of Talan's faults was that he was so caring and willing to give his life for others, which has endangered his lover's life many a time and can arguably be the result of his death. He now prefers company of those who don't seem so naive, becoming slightly hesitant with those that seem too eager to become his friend.

TRAITS AND APPEARANCE

He has dark tanned skin and unruly ebony hair that has slight grown out. He can look a bit intense when he has a sombre expression, but when he smiles and laughs he looks quite goofy. He is rather tall for a Miqo'te but scrawny despite his appetite and drinking habits. He speaks with a thick Limsan accent and has a low and nice-sounding voice, he's often found humming a tune when he's busy by himself.

He likes to dress in loose clothing for easy movement and comfort that is fitting for the warm Thanalan air. He wears a little necklace that holds an arrowhead, given to him by his mother and the engagement ring Talan had specially made for him. He keeps his trusty little dagger, his journal and a battered old pocketwatch in his pockets.

PLOTLINES AND ACTIVITIES

General Activities

Working at the Ruby Carbuncle has introduced Ren to many people and kindled many friendships between him and the staff and customers there. He tends to the Ruby's bar and helps with odd jobs when needs be, talking regularly with its inhabitants. Alongside his bartending work, Ren has been gradually getting back in touch with his old thieving life. Through new and old connections, Ren is picking up a few jobs on the side to quell his wandering hands and get a bit more gil in his pocket.

His mother has recently given him a bow she used to wield back when they were still a part of the tribe as an engagement gift. Upon receiving this bow, she revealed to him the primary reason she decided to seek a new life for her and Ren in Limsa Lominsa. She said she had seen the way of the life for Tias and Nunhs and realised she did not want that life for her son. She wanted him to live his life the way he wanted to, without preparing to take on the Nunh title for the sake of a tradition that could cost him his life. Now that Ren had found love and had decided on a path for his future, Ren's mother was convinced she had made the right choice in leaving her own family and life behind, seeing as how happy Ren was. Ren had appreciated his mother telling him the difficult story and sacrificing so much for him and promised to look after the bow. He had decided to learn to become an archer, seeing at it is in his blood and has slowly begun teaching himself.

One evening, Ren was enjoying a nice friendly natter with the Jackals over a few drinks in the Missing Member. The relaxed and enjoyful evening was to be soon spoiled by the presence of an Elezen woman with haunting red eyes...
She watched them with amusement and with a few whispered words and little changes in the weather, the Elezen mage soon had Ren and the Jackals scared out of their wits. She followed them to the Sunny Seas Salvage where she continued to spook them with more magic and words that called Ifrit's name. Due to Ren's fear of magic, he quickly found himself crippled in fear and if it weren't for the help of the Jackals, he doesn't know what he would have done. The mage's words haunted Ren's thoughts, talk of Talan and spilled blood and calling the Jackals 'pretenders' left him confused. Who was this mage and why did they torment him so? In his distress Ren called Talan on their linkpearl and his lover came to fetch him, but his arrival was not so welcome, the Elezen's words stirring up feelings of suspicion and tension amongst the Jackals. After tempers had been calmed, Ren and Talan returned to the Goblet where Ren told Talan what had happened in full. Talan had reassured Ren he had no clue who this Elezen mage was either and why they knew so much about them.
Once the dreadful night was over, Ren began to dig up information on this Elezen. With only a sketch and what they witnessed that night to go on, Ren turned to his friends for help. Rulian Kalian offered to ask around in the Conjury and Thaumaturge guilds and inquire his allies in the Brass Blades and Immortal Flames. He turned to K'hatos, explaining what had happened and asked for any advise, considering K'hatos' experience with crazy mages. K'hatos was sceptical that the Elezen could actually do harm and was just trying to 'play' with him, but still he agreed to investigate the Ifrit thrall lead to put Ren's worries at ease. Their search for information didn't prove too fruitful, Ren's old friends acquantices had only barely remembered the Elezen if they saw her at all, no name or anything of the like. K'hatos' inquiry into the Amalj'aa did not provide results either and decided exploring the voidsent route couldn't do any harm. He dragged Ren along to a secluded cave somewhere in Thanalan and proceeded to summon 'The Eye', a chatty all-seeing ahriman voidsent. With a bit of banter and a promise to let him eat Ren, K'hatos managed to convince him to spill the beans on what he knew about this mage. He told them that he did indeed recognise the mage and that they have caused a stir in the world of the void. The mage has apparently made a pact with an ancient powerful demon, The Eye would not give it's name, which made K'hatos turn around and tell Ren he was, as he so kindly put it, 'screwed'.

With this new information, Ren returned to the Jackals to give them an update, seeing as he dragged them into this mess and he was not sure if they were in danger as well. He and K'hatos told them what they found and attempted to come up with a plan. K'hatos advised Ren that he should stay with the Jackals and wait the mage out, seeing as she had been quiet for the past couple of Suns and had only approached him when he was with the Jackals. After a day or two, Ren was enjoying a little natter with a few of the Free Company member's outside their shop when a bottle seemed to almost explode in his hand. His hand was seen to by one of the Jackal's resident healers and with a shared look of concern with K'hatos, Ren decided he needed to a walk.

Of course, the little incident was not a coincedence and the mage revealed herself to K'hatos and Ren when they were far enough away from the Jackals. She proceeded to taunt Ren about how he had left Talan unprotected, being easily to manipulated to only be concerned about himself and his friends. The Elezen had waited until the pair were seperated before targeting Talan, using her cleverly whispered words to fill him with dread and trigger his inner demons, causing Talan to close in on himself. K'hatos helped Ren keep calm at this time and asked the smart questions which she easily batted off with insults and more stabs towards Ren and Talan. Once she had said her piece, she vanished as quickly as she appeared, leaving Ren in anger and tears. He rushed to go find and meet his lover in Thanalan.

He found Talan in a refugee camp who cried upon seeing Ren. With the knowledge that the Elezen had desired this outcome, Ren reached out to Talan and comfort him, trying to undo what the mage had done. Soon, Ren had convinced Talan to return to the Ruby with him, reassuring him that together they will find this Elezen mage and deal with her so she could never get between them ever again.

For now, K'hatos has cast protective wards over the Ruby Carbuncle to prevent the mage from entering the place without trouble and Ren and Talan are continuing their investigations into the identity and whereabouts of this Red-Eyed Mage.

★ ♥ X’hansa Jhin – Ren’s mother is an ex-tribal miqo’te, who was once a strong and skilled huntress when armed with a bow and arrow. She’s a bubbly happy person with a wicked kick for when Ren gets mouthy. Ren has a deep respect and love for his mother and loves to visit her often, telling her the stories of his adventures in Eorzea.

● X’oya Nuhn [deceased] – His father was Nuhn of the tribe for a short while. Ren does not remember his father at all and his mother never speaks of him.

FRIENDS

★♥Kenji Eikitaika – The chief engineer at the Ruby Company Trading Co. Ren is enchanted by Raen's ability to create inventions and his clumsy and cute nature, and over time their friendship has developed into something more. Ren forever scared of commitment, especially after his loss, is treading ever so carefully to not screw this up. Only time will tell if he will open his heart fully to Kenji.

★● K'hatos – A flirty and fiery miqo'te that Ren likes to chat and drink with. Although they had a slightly rocky start, the two have become very close friends and Ren owes him a lot for his help with the Red Eyed Mage. Ren is one of the few people that actually get along with K'hatos and has a hard time convincing the rest of his friends that he is not that bad of a guy.

★● Riella Blackthorne – A good friend of Ren's. A paladin in training, Ren has gotten closer to the Highlander during his time working at the Ruby Carbuncle. They have often turned to each other for relationship advise and bonded through drinks and chats.

★● Rhadra Nelhah - Ren's friend and girlfriend of Riella Blackthorne. He finds the Keeper quite cute and nice to talk to. She often likes to play friendly tricks on him and enjoys his cocktails he makes for her. Riedra has decribes Ren as her "precious and sacred male" and is very protective of him, chasing of any suitors that might want to approach him.

● Shiori Eikitaika - Kenji's bubbly younger sister. She has helped Ren in more ways than one, from curing his hangovers to magitek laser burns as well as helping him out when it comes to his lovelife. Ren sees a lot of himself in her, and finds her cute and funny. Now that he's dating Kenji, Shiori has extended her sisterly pestering onto him, and he wouldn't have it any other way.

♥ Talan Arkright [deceased] - Ren’s fiancé and first real love. Drawn to him by his humour, pretty face and caring personality, Ren soon fell for this miqo'te. Ren recently discovered Talan had was killed during an escort mission that went wrong and this has left Ren feeling lost and in utter despair. He now battles with the urges to go seek revenge for Talan, no matter the cost.

ACQUAINTANCES

● Rulian Kalian - One of the Ruby's regulars. This lalafell has been a good friend to Ren, usually chatting with him about his work with materia melding and his recent conquests at the Runestone and Grindstone tournaments in the Ruby's bar.

● J'inarah Marad and J'kilid Tia – Leaders of the free company Jackal and Hide. Ren met J'inarah through a mutual acquaintance from Ren's old thievery days. Inarah approached Ren with a job that required finding out guard patrols and picking the lock to a mansion. He hesitated slightly before being convinced to tag along and help himself to whatever took his fancy in the mansion. He grew close to the pair and often frequents the beachside bar they host on the weekend, making friends with a few of their employees and clients.

● Naomi Bril - The new manager of the Ruby Carbuncle Trading Company. The Keeper has Ren worried for his future and friends at the company after she initiated an investigation in Shiori and K'hatos' 'suspicious' activities. He will be wary of her until she proves she's not the paranoid control freak that she seems to be.

• He's physically fit, but he's not actually the best skilled or strongest fighter. However, he's prefers to observe his opponent, always watching for a moment of opportunity to strike, or escape. He also becoming quite skilled with the bow and arrow, the fact that his mother was one of the best huntresses in her tribe having something to do with it. In time he will begin to search for a mentor to help fine-tune these skills.
• Ren picked up a few nifty skills in not-so-legit activities. He's good at observing and picking up useful pieces of info and has friends in all the right places. Also has +18 skill in lockpicking. He does odd probably-not-so-legal jobs now and again, only for close friends and old reliable clients.
• Aether and magical shizzle-wizzle boggles Ren's mind as he has very little understanding of it. He has slowly learned to appreciate magic and its power through simple explanations given from some of the mages that reside at the Ruby.
