Adem Havenus

Adem is of average height for a Midlander male, barely standing at five feet, eight inches. His posture is impeccable, back always straightened, never slouching or relaxing. His jet black hair falls evenly over the sides of his face, down to his chin. His face is circular with a demure nose and thin lips. His well-kept eyebrows do little to distract from his dark violet eyes. He has no piercings, but instead bears two jagged violet tattoos which reach from the corners of his eyes to halfway down his cheeks. He has a thin frame and pale skin. Adem prefers more conservative clothing to cover his body, and rarely dresses down even when he’s not working.
Aspects That Stand Out:
Adem was born to a minor Ishgardian lord, Remy Havenus under House Durendaire, whose line was disgraced when it was discovered he had an extramarital affair with a Sharlayan scholar. Not long after, a rival lord also of House Durendaire accused Adem’s father of other blasphemies, and the Church spun a tale that the Havenus family abandoned their home and fled to Sharlayan. The truth, however, was that the Inquisitors were tasked with purging the entire Havenus line, a task that they saw nearly to completion. But on the night of the bloodbath, baby Adem was spared and taken back to the church when an Inquisitor noticed a strong aetherical presence about the child. In the rest of his formative years, Adem was raised as a ward of the Church, and told he was a low street urchin. As he aged and began to demonstrate his powers, the Church saw in him an opportunity. As a teenager, Adem worked as a valet for Lord Basont, the same Lord who conspired against Adem’s father. While they were walking the streets, some marbled stone from a nearby construction project broke off and threatened to kill the crowd below. Without even a moment’s thought, Adem raised his arms to protect himself… and was stunned as the others to see the stone crumble to dust as it slammed against a shimmering barrier. No one but Lord Basont saw the wonder he performed, and quickly spirited Adam away to the Church in the chaos. From that day onward, Adem was pried with honeyed words and tortured with barbaric violence. Because of the despair and destruction caused by the Dragonsong War, the Holy See considered opening itself to the outside world to ask for assistance. Seeing this as a threat to their previously isolationist way of life, Lord Basont hoped to study Adam’s innate talent for barriers and find a means to either isolate the Holy See forever, or better yet forever contain the Dravanian Horde. But the strength of the horde was vast, and Lord Basont needed to ensure that nothing in its arsenal could overpower Adem’s abilities. From steel-tipped arrows to the fiery breath of captured wyverns, Lord Basont threw anything he could think of at Adem… and Adem didn’t always succeed in protecting himself. Although Adem’s new flying companion was grateful to him, the wyvern had no intention of flying anywhere but toward Dravania, and so Adem found himself alone in the Coerthas Mountains. It was a perilous journey down the mountainside, but Adem eventually found himself along a caravan route toward the Shroud, and pleaded for transport from a traveling merchant who pitied the frail looking creature. Soon after his arrival, Adem was certain he wanted to continue on, off-put by the Shroud’s own form of isolationism that felt all too similar to that of the Holy See. He remained long enough to save gil for an airship ticket, and made his way to Ul’dah instead, a city-state with a reputation that anyone could lose themselves in the crowds. His savings lasted him barely a week, and he found himself hunting for jobs. He was eventually taken on as a valet again, only this time to an Ul’dahn merchant who was more apathetic to his servants, a welcome trait when measured against Basont’s cruelty. It’s here that Adem now resides, practicing his power in secret for fear that Lord Basont’s memory is long, and his thirst for revenge unquenched.
As a child, Adem grew up believing in the teachings of the Enchiridion and the might of Halone, but slowly his faith faded as he grew up and endured the cruelty of Halone’s alleged children. He no longer has a love for any formal religion, nor does he trust those who come from excessive wealth. However, he does believe that he possesses his power for some unknown purpose, and has many daydreams of rescuing people as he did in Ishgard years ago.
Adem is quite shy around new people, and has difficulty engaging with people beyond the immediate topic of discussion. Still, he’s polite to everyone he meets, though it’s hard to tell if it comes from a place of sincerity or survival.
