Overview

An auri man with uncertain loyalties.

Background

History

For the first ten years of his life, Altadai (though at the time he was nameless) was raised like any other member of the Tumet tribe of Xaela, travelling across the Othard Steppe and being taught the ways of his nomadic people. He was a small, frail child and most of the other children of his tribe avoided speaking to him. With his tenth summer came the traditional Tumet rite of passage; wherein the children who have come of age are tied to a sacred tree, and those who are able to escape and catch up to the tribe are welcomed and given a name. His peers were able to escape with ease - but Altadai was left behind, struggling at his bonds for days. When he finally did escape, he was half starved and extremely dehydrated, bleeding from where the rope had rubbed against his skin.

In a nearly delirious state, he made his way towards the next location the tribe was camping. However, he would never reach this destination. He crossed paths with a Garlean scouting party. The commander of the unit, Imperial Decurio Juste pyr Eligius, did not see a young man undergoing a sacred rite of passage, but an injured young boy starving and alone in the wilderness. In an effort to rescue Altadai, he had his men dragged him back to their Castrum. As the Garleans did not know his language, his protestations fell on deaf ears. The young Xaela resisted until he eventually succumbed to his fatigue and fell unconscious. When he awoke, he was staring at the ceiling of a dimly lit room, with a damp cloth laid upon his forehead. Juste was sitting at his bedside, reading a book in the low candle light. He sat up quickly, ready to flee, but Juste pushed him back down upon the bed, and spoke unfamiliar words in a soothing tone. A moment later, Altadai had faded out of consciousness again.

After nursing him back to health, Juste would adopt Altadai and give him the name Severo. It would take less than a year for Severo to learn the language of his adoptive father and adjust to the Garlean way of life.. At the age of sixteen, Severo would enlist in the military just as the now deceased emperor once did - much to Juste's delight. Once his training was complete, he was stationed in Doma. There he served in a relatively quiet position, and had the opportunity to learn the Doman language. After some time, a Doman woman caught his eye. Certain that she would refuse him if he approached her as a Garlean soldier, he sought advice from Juste, who took him to the markets and bought him a green set of Doman formal attire. In the end, she turned him down anyway - but the clothes would always remind him of his time spent with his father.

When the emperor died and Doma rebelled, Severo was expected to aid in subduing the people he had lived with for years. When the actual fighting broke out, and the killing began, he came to see a new side of the empire he had supported, that he had dedicated his life to. Unable to take part in the slaughter of civilians, he deserted the military. Donning the Doman clothing Juste had given him before, he took on his old tribe's name chose the name Altadai, 'one who is golden', as an alias in order to flee the crumbling nation with the other refugees headed to Eorzea, hoping for a peaceful life. His greatest regret is not telling Juste about his desertion, who he expects came to the assumption that he had died in the fighting.
