General Information

One of the fastest hands in Thanalan; Breholf Talesa is a bounty hunter who always brings them in dead or alive. Raised by Eastern refugees in Limsa Lominsa he gained experience and appreciation for firearms during his service within the Armada. Following the Battle of Carteneau he took up the trade of bounty hunting to combat what he saw as rampant lawlessness that threatened the rebuilding efforts of the city-states.

Appearance

Standing at just over seven fulms Breholf tends to dominate a room with his height. Broad shouldered and typically wearing a grin on his face his unusual attire of a wide brimmed hat, long coat and thick breaches often stand him apart from those in tunics or armour. Across his body are typically an array of holster belts, ammunition bandoliers and knife sheaths. Breholf has white hair and shimmering green eyes which contrast with his dark skin.

Mannerisms

To strangers he’s polite to a fault until he isn’t. While he may tug his hat’s brim in greeting, call folks ‘sir’ or ‘ma’am’ and remove his hat while inside a home Breholf is not a man to keep the charade up when given an ounce of disrespect. With a wicked tongue and a dry humour he’s as capable of being a cheeky little bastard than not.

Breholf seems to believe that he has a sort of impunity granted by his guns and his ability to channel his aether into their use. In a land of swords, spears and bows the man with the gun is, in his eyes, king. He is not a man of empty gestures either. A gift is given in kindness and a gun is drawn to kill.

The Raen operates under his own brand of honour. He’ll keep his word and avoid promises he isn’t certain he can sustain. As a licenced warrant officer (or as he calls it; a bounty hunter) he prefers jobs and warrants that can be cashed in ‘dead or alive’. With that first word he can gun a man or woman down without batting an eye. Justice is nice and neat that way. Judges and guards can be bribed, a jury threatened or paid off. A bullet can’t be bought or reasoned with or begged to and neither can Breholf Talesa when he has your handbill.

To what few friends he possesses (and to most women in his sight) he tries to come across as a cheeky, loveable rogue who jokes and teases in the middle of conversations. All in all he’s an amiable young man with a love for gil, violence and friendship. No better friend and no worst enemy.

Philosophy & Ideals

Despite his job which often attracts those of a moral grey calibre; Breholf believes strongly in right and wrong. The laws of the city-states often vary from one another but he uses them as a measure of how to behave. Those who murder, steal or commit other heinous crimes against their fellow man earn a bullet. Sometimes however he has been known to bring in a bounty alive so the families of victims, or the victims themselves, can watch them do the 'hangman's jig' as a form of closure.

He believes that hard work should be paid for in kind and has no time for corrupt officials; as such he's often had minor clashes with the Brass Blades. He does however acknowledge that people often do things out of desperation such as stealing food to survive and as such often turns a blind eye.

Breholf doesn't have many friends though not because he dislikes the notion. His work often keeps him from forming proper relationships as he loses himself in the job. Those who do earn his friendship are held dear. The Raen would rather have a handful of friends that he treats well and can rely on than a multitude in some weird popularity contest against the world.

Early Life

Childhood

Born to Raen Doman Refugees that fled the Imperial invasion he resisted attempts to make him conform to the Eastern ideals and customs expected of him. Instead he was more interested in playing with the children of his hometown of Limsa Lominsa and earned a reputation as a bit of a troublemaker. Time and time again he shamed his parents by having to be escorted home by the Yellowjackets which often earned him a stern beating.

After being lectured and caned by his father one too many times he fled home at the age of ten and stowed away on board an Armada frigate; the Swordfish. Upon discovery he pleaded and begged to not be taken back home. Or thrown overboard. As such he was given the duties of cabin boy and more dangerously; powder monkey and was responsible for carrying firesand to the cannons.

Despite the danger of being on board a warship Breholf grew into his new role. He was educated along with other boys and girls of his age with rudimentary reading and writing skill by the ship's master along with some navigation and mathematics. However most of his seamanship skills came from on the job.

Adolescence

As time went on Breholf became more involved in the fighting actions on board. He displayed his aptitude for firearms; channelling his aether to influence where the ball would bounce within the smoothbore barrel of a musket along with brawling below deck. Serving as a marine from the age of thirteen he was selected for the midshipman's course after he disobeyed his captain's orders during a battle with a rogue pirate vessel. Rather than stay on board during a close range slugging match Breholf led a small squad on board and set their powder magazine alight.

After returning he warned the captain what he had done and they barely escaped the blast. For his heroism and leadership he was offered to return to Limsa Lominsa for training at the Midshipman's Course at the Naval Academy. However he had still disobeyed orders and endangered the crew. The captain, a stern Sea Wolf, ordered him to run the Gauntlet. She forced Breholf to match slowly down a column of his comrades as they took turns hitting him with knotted cord. Dozens of hits bruised and scarred his back yet the teenager was resolved to finish it.

Barely able to stand he saluted the captain at the end before collapsing in pain.

Once the Swordfish returned to port he was enrolled as a midshipman and learned advanced naval tactics, leadership skills as well as receiving a better standard of education. After passing his initial trials Breholf was a midshipman of the Lominsan Armada and was sent to the sloop-of-war Waverider to serve as a junior officer. There the men and women of the small, swift craft conducted raids on Imperial shipping along their conquered territories taking plunder and capturing ships for a prize.

This deployment would continue until the Battle of Carteneau.

Adulthood

Breholf was nineteen years old when the Battle of Carteneau took place. As a lieutenant in charge of a fusilier company he was ordered to seize high ground when the fighting began. After driving off an Imperial cohort by way of a bayonet charge he ordered his troops to fire volley after volley into the Imperial rear ranks and was supported by archers from Gridania.

While his place in the battle was far from the frontline the danger of Imperial gunfire was real enough that he took a bullet to the right shoulder which saw his arm in a makeshift sling from his officer's sash. However his attention from the fight was stolen when the moon, Dalamud, seemingly exploded. Not waiting on orders from his commander Breholf ordered that the skirmishers on the hill beat a hasty retreat to the battlefield's edge in a bid to escape the destructive power of Bahamut.

Afterwards there was nothing left but the smell of fried flesh and a burnt landscape. Along with other survivors he was treated at an aid station before the long march home. Afterwards, with a gunblade in hand after his own weapon had been damaged in the blast, he headed back home to find Limsa in need of rebuilding.
