Roegadyn.jpg

The Roegadyn are a maritime people whose largest concentrations are found in the northern seas, by way of which they came to Eorzea.

They possess enormous, muscular builds and are known for the cultural emphasis they place on competition and unflinching courage, though tender, introspective individuals can also be found.

Roegadyn in and around the Limsa Lominsa area are typically seamen putting in at port, but many have also settled permanently, becoming mercenaries, bodyguards, or even pirates by trade. Far away, deep in the mountains of Ul'dah, live mountain clans of reclusive Roegadyn known as the Hellsguard, said to have mastered the magical arts.

The Roegadyn are easily identified by their massive, muscular frames. They are descended from a maritime people that roamed the northern seas, though many of their ancestors turned their long-ships south to brave the crossing into Eorzean waters. Often considered a barbaric race, the fiercely competitive Roegadyn are also known for their compassion and unswerving loyalty. Many of the greatest warriors in history were born of Roegadyn stock.

Naming Conventions/Roegadyn Language

While the Roegadyn of Eorzea used to have a language of their own, they adopted the common tongue used by the other inhabitants upon moving to the region. The language of their ancestors is these days used only in their names, and the Hellsguard tribe has mostly abandoned even that practice in favor of translating their names to the common tongue.

Below you can find a dictionary of words confirmed so far in the ancient Roegadyn language. When comparing to real world languages it seems to be somewhat Germanic in origin, and the pronunciation rules follow Germanic patterns.

AE: Somewhere between the 'e' in 'egg' and the 'ai' in 'air' depending on the consonant that follows it
Y: A long 'e' such as the 'ea' in 'eat' or the first 'e' in 'Steve'
OE: An 'ooh' sound such as the 'ue' in 'blue' and the 'oo' in 'I pity the foo'

PF: Closer to an F than a P
TH: More like a hard 't' than a soft 'th'
W: A 'v' sound rather than a soft 'w'
G: Almost always hard (like the 'g' in 'guilt' but not the 'g' in 'page')
J: A 'y' sound like in 'year' and 'yummy'
H: When paired with a vowel (before or after), almost always silent
