Curu was adopted very early in his life in Ul'dah by a poor Hyur Family. Life as a lower class citizien was hard but the family managed. Curu mostly did temporary physical labor jobs like carrying boxes and the like. Outside of work there was not much for him to do, he didn't really have any friends and wasn't really good at any craft he tried. He was a bit of a social outcast which led to him getting in trouble fairly often. When he was about 19 he started spending most of his time in the Coliseum, he watched the Gladiators fight and train. Eventually he decided to start betting on fights and he won most of the time. At the age of about 20 Curu started thinking about becoming a Gladiator himself, fighting was the only thing he was good at and there would most likely be more money in it than in physical labor. He saved up most of his winnings from betting and bought a sword and became a Gladiator himself.

Curu wasn't an extraordinarily good Gladiator but his few wins would earn him enough money to buy food every day. He'd devote most of his free time training with a Hyur who would later become one of his best friends.
