Appearance
Defiant is small in stature, but her desire to do good and help others burns bright inside. She's got dark tanned skin and the white horns and scales characteristic of a Raen... though when she chooses to speak in Doman, her words are somewhat imprecise and have a heavy Steppes accent. Her hair is a silvery blue by birth, though she's chosen to bleach it blonde with hints of pink, and she has heterochromatic eyes. Her posture tends to be stiff and upright, and she puts a lot of thought into how others will perceive her, unless she's in the most casual of situations. Though she tries to act professional she wears her heart on her sleeve, and easily blushes when she's angry or embarrassed.

Notable characteristics include slightly-mismatched eyes... one is green and the other blue, though they're so similar in hue that it's easy to miss. She is missing her right horn entirely, with only a stump remaining to show that it was ever there, and anyone who gets the chance to see her torso exposed will find that she has thick scars that cross from one side to the other of her stomach. They're notably twisted and thick, with heavily raised pale skin and some scales grown in the scar tissue, and any healer can tell they weren't tended to right. Other scars dot her stomach, marking stab wounds and slices, legs and chest all marred slightly.

History
Early Life
Defiant's name alone should be hint enough to her origins, but she's not shy about telling others her past. Defiant's mother found her in the wreckage of a burned caravan, being protected by a badly injured Black Chocobo. It was the only thing left alive from whatever attacked them, and so Defiant was taken in by the Bride clan of Hellsguard in Abalathia's Spine. She lived with her large, boisterous family, and soon came to love them as closely as if she'd been born to them. The town they lived in could barely be called that; traders passed through only on occasion, and beyond them there was no such thing as Strangers to Defiant.

Throughout her childhood, she tended to cling tightly to her sister, Regal, who was six summers older than her and more than happy to dote on a little sibling. They were nearly inseparable for most of Defiant's childhood, and often both trained and played together. It was during her youth that she discovered the Ishgardian concept of Knighthood, and swore on her (wooden) blade to become a true knight who could guard and protect her sister as often as she had helped her.

The Calamity
In time, Defiant's sister came old enough to leave home and seek her fortune in the larger world. With a promise to tell her of all she saw, Regal departed, hiking down the mountain and soon vanishing from sight no matter how long Defiant waited. Though the sudden absence of her best friend was a ragged wound, she was glad to know her sister would be off having adventures like they'd often spoken about!

Unfortunately, Regal never came home. Only a few moons after she set forth, Defiant and her family were witness to the sight of the moon falling from the sky far, far away. Defiant could only stare hopelessly at what seemed like the sure end of the world, thinking of her sister's safety in the suddenly too large and frightening world.

Present Day
Five years after the fall of Dalamud, Defiant has finally resolved to leave home for herself, seeking to learn what she can about becoming a strong, proper knight... as well as looking for the sister who never returned. She traveled to Ul'Dah, where she's managed to find a place to stay and some form of work within the Coliseum. Things aren't easy for the naive young gladiator... every day she sees more people than she could've thought lived in the entire world, and the dangers of Eorzea are greater than she ever thought... but she's resolved not to stop until her body is cold and battered and she can move no more!

Which is a very real risk, given her occupation. Defiant joined the Immortal Flames after hearing a passionate speech from the Flame General, and has been working as a career soldier for the Grand Company for several moons, working her way up through the ranks to become a Sergeant Second-Class. Her duties tend to involve the most basic and tedious of actions, and she's often seen patrolling the roads and guarding small settlements, leaving the more dramatic actions to stronger and more intermittent adventurers. The regular routine means she can arrange her life accordingly, dedicating her time between the Flames, Aethertide Ventures, and mining expeditions.

Personality
Defiant, despite her name, isn't particularly hard-headed nor stubborn for no reason. She's actually quite an agreeable lass, with a strong desire to please and boundless enthusiasm for solving other people's problems. She delights in obeying orders and filling out paperwork, and has VERY strong opinions about people who break the rules (even if they do so in pursuit of larger justice!) She can get extremely wound up when she's afraid that she's not as good as the people around her, and grows both stiffer and louder the more anxious she gets. Defiant also tends get embarrassed and ashamed easily, believing that if she appears anything less than a veteran adventurer that people will look down on her.

When she's comfortable with someone, she tends to be inquisitive and curious, and seeks to learn more about Eorzea and the people in it. Sometimes she can be a bit too forward, asking unintentionally rude questions in an honest desire to understand people. When it comes to sadness she prefers to keep it bottled up rather than bother anyone with her emotions, and when it comes to lying, she's absolutely miserable at it. She idolizes loyal guardians and Ishgardian Knights in particular, and trusts people implicitly (no matter how sketchy they are).

She's often complimented on her purity, and indeed she can be extremely naive as a product of her distant upbringing. Though she attempts to act as if she has always lived within the city states, things such as the concepts of bisexuality, romance novels, and marrying only one person are all foreign to her. She rarely understand innuendo or come-ons either, faking comprehension and occasionally repeating things she's heard without understanding what she's actually saying.

Defiant tends to hold herself to a higher standard than anyone around her, constantly expecting nothing but her absolute best and growing depressed when she feels she can't live up to it. As part of that, she's almost self-destructive in her refusal to rest when injured, pushing herself harder and harder until she's in tatters... and then berates herself for allowing herself to get injured. She does her utmost best to hide her injuries from her companions, going out of her way to keep them to herself even if they grow rotten or worse, and can be EXTREMELY Defiant when it comes down to not continuing to fight or giving herself a break. Though many people have assured her that she has no need to push herself hard, it seems that only being explicitly given orders to put herself out of harm's way was enough to get her to listen. Whether she's learned a lesson or not, though...

Affiliations
Defiant has signed up with the Free Company 'Aethertrade Ventures', as a member of their Outreach division. She's extremely excited about doing proper company work, but is constantly fretting that she's doing such a poor job that she'll be kicked out (despite no indication to such things). She considers it her family in Eorzea, and often attempts to tell new met friends about it in hopes that they'll be interested in working alongside her. She can be extremely defensive about other members, and given her position as Sub-Officer of Outreach, she KNOWS many of the members quite well. She considers it a personal mission to assure that people feel welcome and comfortable within the company, and goes out of her way to greet new members, no matter who they may be!

Her other loyalty lays with the Immortal Flames, her employer and Grand Company. She idolizes the Flames General as the Ideal Leader and Man, and holds Ul'dah's well-being as her greatest priority. She's close to several other guards within the city and around Drybone, and is quite popular among the standard troops... both because of her charming personality, and her willingness to take up any other man's work, no matter how flimsy his excuses for getting out of it might be. Though when she was a fresh-faced private, few were willing to take her seriously, a particularly bloody clash with Amal'jaa forces in Eastern Thanalan earned the respect of all, and she's been given the mostly affectionate nickname of "Virginal Bride".

Recently, Defiant has been working as a free Paladin for the Sultansworn, pushed by her love of Ul'dah and her desire to protect her beloved Sultana... although by and large, they think she might wanna cool it down a little bit. She sure is proud, though!

Rare Rumors
* "Yes... it's the strangest thing. I've never seen someone struggle so much with self-healing, and I've no idea why." - E-Sumi-Yan

* "She was bleeding everywhere, I swear... the sand was soaked in it and I could see her guts...! But she was trying to stand! Kept saying she was needed! M'not sure she's human, honestly... no one should get ripped open like that and be moving about. Makes my stomach churn every time I see her." - Immortal Flames Private

Player Rumors
* "Miss Bride is very kind and trusting, which is both her strength and her weakness. I feel I must protect her, lest somebody unsavoury take advantage of her good nature." - Izanami Tatewaki

* "Insert your own rumors here!!" - you, potentially

Family
Though not related by blood, Defiant counts the Bride clan of Hellsguard as the only family she has ever known. They dwell deep in the mountains to the North, in a settlement that was once a small trading post where merchants could rest on route to Sharlayan and Ishgard. With the invasion of the Garleans, almost all trade has dried up, but occasional visitors still pass through. The isolated location of her home has lead to certain quirks within her clan... though if she even realizes they're quirks remains to be seen.

Companions
* Khyran Oisin: Leader of Aethertide and her personal sworn leader. Her affections for him are a poorly-hidden secret; anyone who asks her about it can tell immediately by the heat of her blushing.

* H'aku Tsesa: Best friend and sworn sister, a hunter and Entrepreneur with Aethertide. She trusts her more than anyone and will do anything if it's for her sake.

* Vi Lindon: STOP branch leader and fashion icon. A cool, cool woman who Defiant is both intimidated by and worries about in turns.

* Sokhatai Urumet: Xaela Au-ra and hunter. A tall, stoic man who's gotten close to Defiant... while once she trusted him implicitly, trauma has lead her to grow nervous when he's around. She wishes to help him and care for him despite this, though.

* Izanami Tatewaki: A fellow Raen Au-ra, and one of the first she ever had a chance to talk to. Izanami fusses over her whenever she's getting in trouble, but she's grown distant after Defiant's Trial.

* Amon Kiral: A stoic and quiet friend who she nevertheless adores chatting with. She's always trying to get him involved with things, whether he's interested or not.

* Fabebe Fabe: A firebrand of a Lalafell who she can't help but like. Called her cute once, and will never make that mistake again!

* John Waterstrike: A friendly Miqo'te healer who assists Aethertide on it's missions. They've grown close enough that he refers to her as a younger sister, but Defiant still calls him Mister out of lingering shyness.

* Sindri Silvernail: The enthusiastic young youth who's energy is incredibly contagious! They're similar in personality as well as pain, and when they're together productivity goes through the roof!

* Llinos Silvernail: A doctor and noblewoman as well as Sindri's adoptive mother. She's assisted Defiant with injuries and relationship advice alike, and while she may cause her trouble at times, she's highly respectful and admiring of the hyuran woman.

* Wemrys Quintos: A powerful but kind bodyguard. The personal escort and bodyguard to Lady Silvernail, never seen without his bandana and axe. Treats Defiant with respect, answering her myriad questions about the Calamity and assuring her fears about being a knight.

* Connor Tavarin: The Lalafell who isn't a Lalafell. Formerly an Au-ra, formerly a Miqo'te, one of Defiant's best friends. Always kind and supportive, his good will and sweet nature has made him a favorite at the Golden Bazaar.

* Swyrdaeg Byrtbyldasyn: An enthusiastic Sea Wolf and Fabebe's brother. She held feelings for him, but when he confessed to her things went downhill. Whatever relationship they had is certainly gone now, and she struggles to meet his eyes.

* Oyunchimeg Ejinn: A Xaela woman who mugged, stabbed, and took Defiant as her slave when she saved her life. Defiant hid their relationship in hopes of reforming Oyu, but ended up tangled into terrible events that lead to her horn being sawed off and a trial to decide the fates of both women. She still has nightmares about her, even though she's been jailed.

* Jikam Lo'stans: A wandering Keeper and new face in Aethertide, along with his infant son, Titus. Defiant matches his gregarious nature nicely and although relatively new friends their talks are long and deep. Guessed Defiant's crushes just by talking really fast.

* Toviel Caliguri: An eccentric Elezen man who's quite tall even for his race. Gets along quite well with Defiant, and they share affection for Khyran Oisin that most people would probably call hilarious.

* Dante Thalmos: Knight, Dragoon, and trainer. Overseas sparring matches and seems to have a particular interest in seeing Defiant improve. Her opinion of him is highly mixed, but she recognizes his ability without question.

* Rosalin Menoly: A dead woman who continues to walk. A quiet, subdued woman who's care and kind demeanor has drawn Defiant's heart... though she accidentally turned her down? Whoops.

* Aghurlal Qar'akimusun: The xaela 'fisherman'. A passing accquaintance of Defiant's who not only picked up a wonderful fish for her but taught her a bit of Doman. Might have something in common they don't realize...

* Aulsoix Claimane: A duskwight noble of Ishgard. One of Def's paid employers, though perhaps she doesn't think to ask him as much as she should about the missions he assigns?

* Kaito Nagano: An Egg. Bartender at Defiant's favorite dancing venue, and a BIG HECKING NERD.

RP Starters | You May Know Her if...
* You spend a lot of time working in Eastern Thanalan | Particularly if you frequent the Golden Bazaar often. She's a near constant fixture in the area, and is well known by merchants and the Blades alike... anyone spending a lot of time there would soon come to recognize her as she runs errands in the area.

* You're a career member of the Immortal Flames | Defiant's just a First Sergeant, but she's dedicated and hard-working, and has a reputation in the company as being willing to pick up ANYONE'S work if they ask nicely enough. If your soldier wants to slack off, she's the girl to get to cover your ass!

Defiant is bisexual and polyamorous but has little experience in either love or romance. You try flirting with the same dozen people who've known you since you were a babe.

<div align=justify><div style="padding: 7px 4px;font-size:13px; color:#444146;font-family:Georgia;"> Sund-ste-i-gen. The name rolled off the tongue awkwardly: too many vowels. It lacked the violent nomenclature of Highlander surnames; however, the name "Sundsteigen" once belonged to a lesser noble house of Ala Mhigo reputed for its bloodthirsty dedication to Rhalgr.  Despite this lineage, Sigurd had done much to distance himself from that name.
 +
A former son of Ala Mhigo; stripped from his homeland by war and the machinations of the void, Sigurd gradually improved his lot in life and eventually became a multi-gillionaire vintner and entrepreneur.  A loud-mouthed narcissist who cares for only himself and the very few he considers family, the vintner leaves a sour taste in most who cross his path.  </div></div>

<div style="padding: 7px 4px;font-size:13px; color:#26212B;font-family:Georgia;">Standing just over six-fulm-seven, Sigurd towers over most folk, barring the occasional Roegadyn, and possesses a broad build endowed by proud Ala Mhigan bloodlines.  Despite these natural endowments, Sigurd’s physique is markedly average, as dense muscle is accompanied by thin layers of “extra padding” disturbed evenly about his lanky torso.  Having lost his left hand to a Garlean tribunus, the vintner now sports a gaudy magitek prosthetic limb.

The vintner’s face and body are marred by a maze of small, uniform two-ilm scars.  His eyes are a piercing shade of cobalt blue.  The smug, satisfied grin that frequents his lips does much to mitigate the wrinkles and age-lines that prematurely settled about his unusually pale countenance.  Wispy strands of thick platinum-blonde hair, flush with aging white locks are usually slicked back neatly behind his ears, as few things vex the vintner more than unruly bangs.

Some confess Sigurd exudes physical charisma capable of lighting up a room, but his aesthetics are no doubt old-fashioned, much like an appropriately aged bottle of wine. </div>

<div style="padding: 7px 4px;font-size:13px; color:#444146;font-family:Georgia;">Painfully affable and outgoing to a fault, Sigurd becomes highly excitable around strangers, crowds, and shallow acquaintances.  The consummate networker, Sigurd relies on his "keen" sense of intuition to a fault, forms strong opinions quickly, rarely thinks before acting, and hastily judges others without delay.  He speaks in a slow, alluring tone, but his words are often crude and long-winded.  Despite this crass demeanor, Sigurd's motives are usually underscored by manipulative intent, narcissism, and low cunning.

Sigurd enjoys mocking social customs and courtesies, especially if nationalistic or religious topics are at play. He bears a special sympathy for the Ala Mhigan and Garlean people, but laments their loyalties to “genocidal nation states.”  His moral compass spins erratically but usually settles in the general direction of values that allow others to live autonomously.

In private settings, Sigurd is far more warm and reserved, especially around those he considers close friends and family.  Once deplete of empathy, Sigurd has gradually become warm and supportive of those he loves.  Fiercely loyal to these few individuals, they observe a side of the vintner rarely shown to others.

 +
Rain followed Sigurd from youth, falling from the depths of the void.
 +
<br><br>
 +
The sky broke when Ala Mhigo tore itself apart when its walls fell and the King of Ruin abdicated his bloody throne.  At the age of ten, Sigurd was taken under the wing of his "uncle," Hunter Sundsteigen.  A second-tier voidsent entity, Hunter posed as a priest of Rhalgr and gifted his "nephew" a sharp knife and taught the importance of worshiping through sacrifice. The priest expected the boy to spread the faith, and promised the breaker of worlds smiled every time a throat was indiscriminately opened in his name. Sigurd had few choices other than to appease his uncle's murderous appetite for aether, as even a brief lapse in faith invoked horrific consequences.
 +
<br><br>
 +
The legions of Garlemald weakened Hunter's control momentarily, as Sigurd and Hunter were forced to flee Ala Mhigo.  The priest, however, formed a reclusive commune on the skirts of Little Ala Mhigo and lured drifters, wanderers, and other exiles to rally under the common cause of "restoring the Ala Mhigo."  The commune grew into a fringe, extreme wing of the Ala Mhigan resistance. Sigurd remained Hunter's most loyal thrall and endured years of brutal "tutelage," which amounted to little more than instruction in classic Ala Mhigan close quarters combat and murder.  Sigurd proved skilled at harvesting aether by quietly eliminating "undesirables" who joined the swelling ranks, including the weak, poor, and infirm.
 +
<br><br>
 +
Yet, three qualities grew to distinguish Sigurd from his kin: self-interest, wanderlust, and a gnawing sense of guilt. Sigurd grew to despise the blind vengeance and blood lust motivating his countrymen, who oft devolved into zealots chasing a lost cause. Sigurd grew to loath himself for the unspeakable evils he committed under the direction of Hunter and bundled those emotions away while dreaming of escaping the bleak desert landscape surrounding Little Ala Mhigo. Hunter eventually allowed Sigurd to leave and experience the outside world after the commune had swelled to sufficient proportions.
 +
<br><br>
 +
During his twenties, Sigurd traveled far and wide under carefree skies.  He directed his natural faculties and training into the adventuring profession, accepting almost any contract that paid above fair market rate. Over a ten year period, Sigurd gained considerable experience planning expeditions, leading small groups, and motivating individuals to risk their lives for gil. The work was interesting, as it encompassed stealing trade secrets, plundering forgotten ruins, and poking holes into squishy things.  But most importantly, adventuring paid extremely well, and countless nights were packed with lush wines, loose women, and easily forgotten memories.
 +
<br><br>
 +
Over time, it became apparent that the adventuring lifestyle would not last forever. Sigurd encountered a poor string of luck after botching several important contracts, which prompted crippling debt. He discharged all but one debt. The remaining creditor, an influential Limsan gambler, refused Sigurd's attempt to tender late payment. Instead, the gambler chose to waive the debt after a crude torture session. The gambler carved the outstanding sum into pale flesh-- one cut, a total of 30 in all, for each ten-thousand gil owed. These injuries were grievous and necessitated Sigurd's premature sabbatical.
 +
<br><br>

After losing much of his pride to the gambler, Sigurd tapped his remaining savings and purchased a plot on the fringe of Wineport, where he began cultivating wines and recovering from his injuries. The idea of owning a quaint vineyard had entered his mind several times while adventuring through La Noscea; it was the type of peaceful, leisurely existence he dreamed of as a child. At first, wine cultivation did not live up to his romanticized expectations. Hours were spent in the vineyards learning the basics of grape cultivation. More were spent in the cellars, performing an endless number of tastings and learning pretentious trade etiquette. As a result, Sigurd developed a shrewd business sense and understanding of "high society." The vintner trade provided stability and material comforts capable of sating the Highlander's thirst for severe indulgence and frivolity. Yet, these desires only increased as his wines became the object of greater demand, especially in Ul'dah, where the Quicksand became his highest grossing customer.

Sigurd gradually declined into a shiftless alcoholic and struggled with severe anxiety and depression, knowing Hunter would eventually beckon him back to the commune.  Skylar Brooks dragged Sigurd away from these destructive habits and set him on a new path. Joining arms with former Garlean centurion Septimus Nerva, Sigurd acquired a fifty-percent interest in the now defunct Magitek free company, Ebonbrand Teknoworks.  Through Ebonbrand, the vintner met his future wife, Khana Borlaaq.  Khana suffered the brunt of Sigurd's volatile past and eventually fathered a child to another man.  Sigurd, however, grew to love her child as his own and agreed to marry Khana.  All the while, Sigurd worked tirelessly to strike an accord between Skylar's lovers, Endricane Feltaro and Septimus Nerva.  His efforts failed and eventually soured his relationships with all parties.
 +
<br><br>
 +
By some strange twist of fate, Sigurd met Khyran Oisin, a frail cripple who would eventually purge the void from the vintner's life.  After Hunter's physical shell died, the voidsent eventually transferred his essence into Khana's infant daughter to torment Sigurd.  Around this time, the vintner stumbled across Odette Saoirse, who offered him unconditional friendship at a time when most had turn their backs on the vintner.  Sigurd's feelings for Odette grew over time as a result of her "great personality."  With the help of his new comrades, Sigurd narrowly defeated Hunter and banished the void's influence from his life for good.
 +
<br><br>
 +
Sigurd took a much-needed break from public life after Hunter's fall but returned after hearing that Septimus was imprisoned on charges of treason. The vintner briefly joined Khyran's new free company, Aethertide Ventures, to keep the reckless man safe.  During this time, Khyran learned of the treacherous plot of Amandus Cassius, a Garlean tribunus who sought to overthrow the Legatus of Castrum Occidens and invade La Noscea.  Sigurd felt compelled to eliminate Amandus because few believed Khyran's wild accusations. With the help of over forty adventurers, Sigurd directed an offensive against Amandus, who severed the vintner's left hand and critically wounded several combatants before falling in battle.
 +
<br><br>
 +
Defeating Amandus made Sigurd realize that not all threats can be drowned in wine.  With the help of Odette and assets bequeathed by Skylar, Sigurd formed a clandestine philanthropic organization intended to eradicate unaddressed risks to Eorzean stability, sending him down another path in life to destinations unknown. </div>

Notes<br>
 +
* Sigurd’s connection with the void was severed by Khyran Oisin, but he still feels its influence on occasion.
 +
* Sigurd appears to be in his mid-forties due to excessive aether use and channeling during his youth.  He suffers from a disproportional number of aches and pains typically felt by much older individuals.
 +
* Sigurd is sensitive to aetheric signatures and can detect them across distances after mingling his blood with others.
 +
* Like the Fists of Rhalgr and Dark Knights of Ishgard, Sigurd can siphon aether from the dead and uses his body as an aether channeling focus. Aether seeps from the scars on Sigurd's body when he becomes highly emotional and can be channeled to hasten movement and form barriers.  Sigurd can staunch the flow of aether only by opening a small cut on his body.
 +
* Sigurd /rarely/ utilizes aetheric abilities and keeps his former association with the void closely guarded.  Extremely few know about his past.
 +
* Sigurd is especially attuned to sensing and combating voidsent energies.  A tamed wolf knows the tricks of a wild wolf.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Sund-ste-i-gen.

APPEARANCE

Standing just over six-fulm-seven, Sigurd towers over most folk, barring the occasional Roegadyn, and possesses a broad build endowed by proud Ala Mhigan bloodlines.

Distinguishing physical characteristics:
■ Dozens of small, uniform scars distributed randomly over unusually pale skin.
■ A magitek prosthetic left hand, lavishly gilded with platinum and powered by ceruleum.
■ A tall, stocky (but proportional) build.
■ Haunting and sunken cobalt-blue eyes.
■ A “winning smile” – a practiced, shit-eating grin befitting of a used chocobo salesman.

PERSONALITY

Painfully affable and outgoing to a fault, Sigurd becomes highly excitable around strangers, crowds, and shallow acquaintances.

L I K E S

Gentlemen’s beverages. Red wine and top-shelf whiskey. A functional alcoholic, the vintner rarely travels anywhere without a flask top-shelf Limsan whiskey or bottle of over-priced red wine.
Blondes. Sigurd is naturally attracted to blonde women (and men) and often acts like a complete idiot in their presence.
Magitek and “Technology of the Future” Although Sigurd is trained in classic Ala Mhigan close-quarters combat and spent much of his early life living in a cave, he is fascinated by magitek technology, especially firearms.
First-World Eccentric Bullshit. Since becoming a multi-gillionaire, Sigurd is obsessed with lavish, stupid displays of wealth and over-priced consumer goods, including (but not limited to): (1) licensed Apakallu sipping birds; (2) expensive Magitek trinkets; (3) “gilded” goods of any type; and (4) refurbished Allagan artifacts and clothing.
Sweeping views and amateur poetry. Sigurd loves gazing into the open sky and taking in high views of natural landscapes. The vintner enjoys writing /terrible/ poetry in private while enjoying these views.

D I S L I K E S

Dullards. Sigurd despises individuals who walk with tight asses, carry heavy baggage, or lack a sense of humor.
Religion (especially Rhalgr) and Nationalism (especially Ala Mhigo) Having lost faith in gods and nations at a young age, the vintner has very little patience for people he considers zealots. Although Sigurd is fond of the Ala Mhigan people, he loathes the Ala Mhigan state and its bloodthirsty, patron-deity.
Voidsent, gambling, and unmitigated risks. Sigurd /hates/ anything that has caused him undue stress, fear, and anxiety in his life. This trifecta of trouble earns his foulest ire.

H O B B I E S

Quality-time. Although Sigurd may publicly bemoan those he considers family for a variety of reasons, being in their presence makes him a tolerable hyur-being.
Binge drinking and smoke-outs. The vintner adores getting lush via expensive adult beverages and potent moko grass.
Lavish spending. Only the best satisfies the vintner these days. This doctrine is applicable to all consumer goods.
Opining. Whether reciting shitty poetry to himself or lecturing individuals half his age, Sigurd considers himself a self-appointed expert on an inordinate number of obscure subjects. Not surprisingly, most of his ridiculous claims cannot be verified.

S T R E N G T H S

Wine-making / Wine-tasting. Sigurd has /many/ faults. But few can dispute the quality of his vintages and exceptional palette.
Commerce and industry. Having come from nothing and enjoyed the benefits of extensive “self-education,” the vintner developed a shrewd business sense and considers himself a ground-breaking entrepreneur, investor, and “deal-maker.”
New-age combat. Having fused elements of classic Ala Mhigan close quarters combat with Garlean firearms, Sigurd has gradually shifted from wielding a great sword and aether siphoned from dark places to an “innovative form of new-age combat.”

W E A K N E S S E S

Bipolar and insecure. Sigurd forces himself to project a confident public image but often feels extremely insecure. Over the years, he has become very skilled at hiding these insecurities, which often manifest in bipolar mood swings.
"Man of action." The vintner thinks of himself as a “man of action.” In actuality, Sigurd rarely pauses to carefully consider his actions and potential consequences. The vintner has gotten in enormous amounts of trouble as a result of his brash, results-oriented decision making.
Minimal empathy. Unless Sigurd knows a person very well, he struggles to understand the emotions and sensitivity of others, causing him to sometimes offend others through his zany, loud antics.
Lazy. The vintner is inherently lazy. He enjoys “delegating” all “detail work” to others and frequently struggles to find motivation.

M O T I V A T I O N S

Enjoying time while it lasts. – There are five people in Sigurd’s life who he considers close family. He devotes much of his energy to seeing to their happiness while engaging in activities that bring him personal fulfillment.
Risk mitigation. After destroying two great antagonists, the vintner has come to realize the importance of eradicating risks before they blossom into threats that endanger his interests.
A brave new world. Sigurd desires to see peace between Garlemald and Eorzea and the return of his kin to Ala Mhigo. Unlike many Ala Mhigans, the vintner believes that peaceful coexistence is possible and blames contemporary political figures for the turmoil enveloping the times.”

Odileitems.png

Gilded Magitek prosthetic left hand. After losing his left hand in battle, Sigurd spared no expense on a gilded magitek replacement. Four names are scribed in a tiny font at the base of the prosthetic: Khana Sundsteigen, Anujin Sundsteigen, Odette Saiorse, and Khyran Oisin, along with the makers’ stamps: “Suetonius Donatus and Defiant Bride.”
Prototype gunblade. A cutting-edge, technological marvel crafted by Sigurd’s former Garlean business partner and friend, Septimus Rem Nerva and originally made for the Garlean’s wife, Skylar Brooks. Sigurd now wields the gunblade with surprising proficiency.
Doman tanto. Gifted by a man the vintner considers a distant brother, Endricane Feltaro, a magnificent hand-crafted doman tanto usually rests at the ready atop the vintner’s chest in a custom sheathe.
Platinum materia-and-shell charm necklace. Sigurd often wears a discrete platinum necklace bearing a small materia orb and seashell under his exterior garments.
Griffin sigil flask. A prized wedding gift, Sigurd ensures his trusty flask, which bears the sigil of Ala Mhigo, is filled with top-shelf Limsan whiskey and on his person at all times.
Stack of promissory notes Instead of carrying a pouch of gil, Sigurd carries a fat stack of blank promissory notes. Each promissory note bears the official insignia of Ul’dah’s finest financial institutions.
Magitek pen The vintner carries an exotic magitek pen on his person at all times. Infused with cureleum and containing a large ink-well, the pen has executed several important documents.
Multi-frequency link pearl Within Sigurd’s left ear resides a multi-frequency link pearl bearing the stamp of the liquidated free company, Ebonbrand Teknoworks. Sigurd uses this link pearl to maintain contact with various contacts and social networks.

Background Narrative

Rain followed Sigurd from youth, falling from the depths of the void.

IC Narrative

Notes

 • Sigurd’s connection with the void was severed by Khyran Oisin, but he still feels its influence on occasion.
 • Sigurd appears to be in his mid-forties due to excessive aether use and channeling during his youth. He suffers from a disproportional number of aches and pains typically felt by much older individuals.
 • Sigurd is sensitive to aetheric signatures and can detect them across distances after mingling his blood with others.
 • Like the Fists of Rhalgr and Dark Knights of Ishgard, Sigurd can siphon aether from the dead and uses his body as an aether channeling focus. Aether seeps from the scars on Sigurd's body when he becomes highly emotional and can be channeled to hasten movement and form barriers. Sigurd can staunch the flow of aether only by opening a small cut on his body.
 • Sigurd /rarely/ utilizes aetheric abilities and keeps his former association with the void closely guarded. Extremely few know about his past.
 • Sigurd is especially attuned to sensing and combating voidsent energies. A tamed wolf knows the tricks of a wild wolf.

FAMILY

Khana Borlaaq, Wife. ( ) - Dove.
Character's Thoughts: "You taught me how to love, dove."
Sigurd first viewed Khana as an awkward, waifish girl and tormented her in countless ways. But the pair grew to form a dark, affectionate, and tumultuous bond. Their relationship ultimately blossomed into a joyous marriage. Sigurd and Khana are often disgustingly sappy in private. The vintner admires how much she has grown as a person since their first meeting in Coerthas.
Anujin Sundsteigen, Daughter. ( ) - Princess.
Character's Thoughts: "You may not be my blood, but you will always be my first-born."
Although Sigurd and his infant daughter are not bound by blood, the vintner considers Khana's first child his own. Anujin’s teething marks can be seen all along the vintner’s right arm.
Odette Saoirse, Amesoeur. ( ) - Dear.
Character's Thoughts: "I love and /trust/ you... even if you could stand to lose a few pounze."
Sigurd was blacked-out drunk when he met the sultry bardess and treated her like a lowly bar-wench. Odette was kind enough to forgive the vintner and ultimately offered him aid against unspeakable evils. What began as physical attraction turned over time to genuine love, and Sigurd considers the bardess an amesoeur (soulmate).
Khyran Oisin, "Brother". ( ) - Cripple.
Character's Thoughts: You are a dull, insufferable, self-loathing shit much of the time, but I wouldn’t replace you for anything in this world.
Khy was a miserable, broken thing Sigurd when Sigurd bumped into the frail man in La Noscea. However, something about the cripple struck a sympathetic nerve, and Sigurd took the man under his wing for a time. Khy selflessly returned these favors time after time and freed the vintner of his demons. Sigurd owes Khyran a debt he will never be able to repay and gladly stomachs the cripple's mopey, humorless demeanor.
NON-FAMILY

Skylar Brooks, Confidential. ( ) - Sky.
Character's Thoughts: ". . ."
Sigurd was drawn to "Sky" like a moth to a flame - the blonde 'secretary' intriguing him like few others he had chanced across over the years. Sky lured Sigurd away from his self-destructive habits. Although Sig and Sky crossed blades more than once, they maintained an unbreakable friendship and unspoken love. After her untimely death, Sky bequeathed the entirety of her 600-million gil estate to Sigurd, giving the vintner's life a new direction yet again. Sig frequently honors Sky's memory in private with a mutual friend of the deceased, Yael Cahernaut.
Endricane Feltaro, Distant brother. ( ) - Ender.
Character's Thoughts: "Perhaps we'll both be just men in the end."
Having seen the best and worst of Sigurd, Endricane first stumbled across the vintner on a terribly paved bridge outside of Ul'dah. Over the following months, Sigurd betrayed Endricane's trust numerous times. Endricane, however, forgave Sigurd after he learned the vintner's motivations. Sigurd and Endricane now bemoan the difficulties of fatherhood and still find exciting new ways to vex one another.
Septimus Nerva, Partner. ( ) - Septimus Rem Nero Varus Nerva.
Character's Thoughts: "...Should have listened to me, partner."
Sigurd counts Septimus a close friend and former business partner, despite their frequent feuds and drastically different personalities. While they operated Ebonbrand Teknoworks, Sigurd worked tirelessly to convince the Garlean to abandon his dedication to the "Fatherland." The vintner was disappointed but not surprised when Septimus was arrested and jailed by Eorzean authorities for treason.
Defiant Bride, Protégé. ( ) - My Most Defiant Bride.
Character's Thoughts: "...I will consider myself blessed if Anujin turns out like you, save for the stutter. Too many stuttering au ra in my life already..."
Defiant Bride possesses shockingly similar traits to Sigurd’s wife, Khana: short, waifish, kind hearted, and a serious speech impediment. Sigurd finds himself attracted to the stuttering raen while drunk but in rare moments of sobriety, considers her a protégé. Sigurd frequently delegates administrative and "detail work" to the poor Raen and lectures her on a variety of "important issues."
Glace Silencieuse, Buddy. ( ) - Frostie!
Character's Thoughts: "...Someday, maybe not in this lifetime, I /will/ hug you. I swear it."
Frostie! An old buddy of Sigurd. As much a "taxidermist" as Sigurd is a "vintner." Sigurd developed a tremendous amount of respect for Frostie while working in Ebonbrand. He finds the bleak duskwight a bit rigid, cold, and stiff at times, but such things are to be expected, no doubt.

RUMORS

N P C

Some of these rumors are untrue, speculation, or are greatly exaggerated.

◢ Common Rumors - Easily overheard. Use these freely!

"Sundsteigen? I've heard of that name before! It's on red wine bottles sold at the Quicksand!"
"Last week, /that/ Highlander shoved a glass of wine in my hand, slipped an arm around my waist, and proceeded to compliment my blonde hair ... I would have pushed him off, but the wine tasted too good..."
◢ Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear. Use sparingly or ask first!
Something is /really/ off about Sigurd; he comes off pleasant enough, but... I've never liked the look of those eyes of his, especially when he's not grinning."

◢ Player Character Rumors - Some of these are more rare than others!
"He sure seems to know his wine! He knew exactly what rare wine Madame Momodi had available." -- Aya Foxheart.
"Conniving, desperately scrambling for power... I've yet to ascertain if that's cause for concern, but I will figure it out and respond accordingly." -- Faye Covington.
"Sigurd is a crass, lustful, shallow man who would much rather take the easy way than face reality. He's a bantering coward, drooling over blonde women and more often than not, drunk with his own wine." He sighs, and shakes his head. "But, who am I kidding. I love this man, as one of my dearest friends. I would die for him in a heartbeat." -- Khyran Oisin
"Completely absurd sometimes, but I know something of masks. I've recently come into some rare good fortune, and I have Sundsteigen to thank for it. Like it or not, I'm in his debt." -- Glace Silencieuse
"Sigurd like bee, buzzing everywhere and anywhere. Always amusing in Sigurd's company, never once boring but.. must be difficult to keep smiling and grinning like that." -- Tsaganarii Dhoro
"Someone didn't bolt his brainpan squarely shut. He seems like he loses his mind over stupid nonsense." -- Glace Silencieuse
"The man is a quick talker, and a damn good complimenter.. He slipped me a coupon and linkpearl, and I for the life of me have no idea what the pearl was for still.. the conversations over it though are interesting." -- War Bear
"Sigurd is... a work of art formed by various brush strokes of differing mediums. Each one a layer atop the other, lapped and overlapped to the point of being nigh indistinguishable beyond small chips that marr the surface. He's a smart-ass, a shit-stirrer and an incorrigible pain in the ass. Suffice t'say, however, a recipient of my support and developing friendship. Give him my regards." -- Odette Saoirse
"This guy tried to sue me for spilling wine on him! Total prick." -- Spahro Llorn
"Wha' he lacks in taste in women, he makes up fer with wine. Mostly." -- Avelyn Firestone
"H-he's a frustrating, obtuse idiot w-who demands a l-lot just t-to feel important a-and assigns t-the worst jobs t-to me whenever he g-gets frustrated... a-and... h-he's... he's very kind, too. He's v-very very kind when h-he wishes to be, and I trust him w-when things come down to it." -- Defiant Bride
