Appearance

Defiant is small in stature, but her desire to do good and help others burns bright inside. She's got dark tanned skin and the white horns and scales characteristic of a Raen... though when she chooses to speak in Doman, her words are somewhat imprecise and have a heavy Xaelan accent. Her hair is a silvery blue by birth, though she's chosen to bleach it blonde with hints of pink, and she has heterochromatic eyes. Her posture tends to be stiff and upright, and she puts a lot of thought into how others will perceive her, unless she's in the most casual of situations. Though she tries to act professional she wears her heart on her sleeve, and easily blushes when she's angry or embarrassed.

Notable characteristics include slightly-mismatched eyes... one is green and the other blue, though they're so similar in hue that it's easy to miss. She is missing her right horn entirely, with only a stump remaining to show that it was ever there, and anyone who gets the chance to see her torso exposed will find that she has thick scars that cross from one side to the other of her stomach. They're notably twisted and thick, with heavily raised pale skin and some scales grown in the scar tissue, and any healer can tell they didn't heal right. Other scars dot her stomach, marking stab wounds and slices, legs and chest all marred slightly.

History

Early Life

Defiant's name alone should be hint enough to her origins, but she's not shy about telling others her past. Defiant's mother found her in the wreckage of a burned caravan, being protected by a badly injured Black Chocobo. It was the only thing left alive from whatever attacked them, and so Defiant was taken in by the Bride clan of Hellsguard in Abalathia's Spine. She lived with her large, boisterous family, and soon came to love them as closely as if she'd been born to them. The town they lived in could barely be called that; traders passed through only on occasion, and beyond them there was no such thing as Strangers to Defiant.

Throughout her childhood, she tended to cling tightly to her sister, Regal, who was six summers older than her and more than happy to dote on a little sibling. They were nearly inseparable for most of Defiant's childhood, and often both trained and played together. It was during her youth that she discovered the Ishgardian concept of Knighthood, and swore on her (wooden) blade to become a true knight who could guard and protect her sister as often as she had helped her.

The Calamity

In time, Defiant's sister came old enough to leave home and seek her fortune in the larger world. With a promise to tell her of all she saw, Regal departed, hiking down the mountain and soon vanishing from sight no matter how long Defiant waited. Though the sudden absence of her best friend was a ragged wound, she was glad to know her sister would be off having adventures like they'd often spoken about!

Unfortunately, Regal never came home. Only a few moons after she set forth, Defiant and her family were witness to the sight of the moon falling from the sky far, far away. Defiant could only stare hopelessly at what seemed like the sure end of the world, thinking of her sister's safety in the suddenly too large and frightening world.

Present Day

Five years after the fall of Dalamud, Defiant has finally resolved to leave home for herself, seeking to learn what she can about becoming a strong, proper knight... as well as looking for the sister who never returned. She traveled to Ul'Dah, where she's managed to find a place to stay and some form of work within the Coliseum. Things aren't easy for the naive young gladiator... every day she sees more people than she could've thought lived in the entire world, and the dangers of Eorzea are greater than she ever thought... but she's resolved not to stop until her body is cold and battered and she can move no more!

Which is a very real risk, given her occupation. Defiant joined the Immortal Flames after hearing a passionate speech from the Flame General, and has been working as a career soldier for the Grand Company for several moons, working her way up through the ranks to become a Sergeant Second-Class. Her duties tend to involve the most basic and tedious of actions, and she's often seen patrolling the roads and guarding small settlements, leaving the more dramatic actions to stronger and more intermittent adventurers. The regular routine means she can arrange her life accordingly, dedicating her time between the Flames, Aethertide Ventures, and mining expeditions.

Personality

Defiant, despite her name, isn't particularly hard-headed nor stubborn for no reason. She's actually quite an agreeable lass, with a strong desire to please and boundless enthusiasm for solving other people's problems. She delights in obeying orders and filling out paperwork, and has VERY strong opinions about people who break the rules (even if they do so in pursuit of larger justice!) She can get extremely wound up when she's afraid that she's not as good as the people around her, and grows both stiffer and louder the more anxious she gets. Defiant also tends get embarrassed and ashamed easily, believing that if she appears anything less than a veteran adventurer that people will look down on her.

When she's comfortable with someone, she tends to be inquisitive and curious, and seeks to learn more about Eorzea and the people in it. Sometimes she can be a bit too forward, asking unintentionally rude questions in an honest desire to understand people. When it comes to sadness she prefers to keep it bottled up rather than bother anyone with her emotions, and when it comes to lying, she's absolutely miserable at it. She idolizes loyal guardians and Ishgardian Knights in particular, and trusts people implicitly (no matter how sketchy they are).

She's often complimented on her purity, and indeed she can be extremely naive as a product of her distant upbringing. Though she attempts to act as if she has always lived within the city states, things such as the concepts of bisexuality, romance novels, and marrying only one person are all foreign to her. She rarely understand innuendo or come-ons either, faking comprehension and occasionally repeating things she's heard without understanding what she's actually saying.

Defiant tends to hold herself to a higher standard than anyone around her, constantly expecting nothing but her absolute best and growing depressed when she feels she can't live up to it. As part of that, she's almost self-destructive in her refusal to rest when injured, pushing herself harder and harder until she's in tatters... and then berates herself for allowing herself to get injured. She does her utmost best to hide her injuries from her companions, going out of her way to keep them to herself even if they grow rotten or worse, and can be EXTREMELY Defiant when it comes down to not continuing to fight or giving herself a break. Though many people have assured her that she has no need to push herself hard, it seems that only being explicitly given orders to put herself out of harm's way was enough to get her to listen. Whether she's learned a lesson or not, though...

Affiliations

Defiant has signed up with the Free Company 'Aethertrade Ventures', as a member of their Outreach division. She's extremely excited about doing proper company work, but is constantly fretting that she's doing such a poor job that she'll be kicked out (despite no indication to such things). She considers it her family in Eorzea, and often attempts to tell new met friends about it in hopes that they'll be interested in working alongside her. She can be extremely defensive about other members, and given her position as Sub-Officer of Outreach, she KNOWS many of the members quite well. She considers it a personal mission to assure that people feel welcome and comfortable within the company, and goes out of her way to greet new members, no matter who they may be!

Her other loyalty lays with the Immortal Flames, her employer and Grand Company. She idolizes the Flames General as the Ideal Leader and Man, and holds Ul'dah's well-being as her greatest priority. She's close to several other guards within the city and around Drybone, and is quite popular among the standard troops... both because of her charming personality, and her willingness to take up any other man's work, no matter how flimsy his excuses for getting out of it might be. Though when she was a fresh-faced private, few were willing to take her seriously, a particularly bloody clash with Amal'jaa forces in Eastern Thanalan earned the respect of all, and she's been given the mostly affectionate nickname of "Virginal Bride".

Recently, Defiant has been working as a free Paladin for the Sultansworn, pushed by her love of Ul'dah and her desire to protect her beloved Sultana... although by and large, they think she might wanna cool it down a little bit. She sure is proud, though!

Rare Rumors

M'not sure she's human, honestly... no one should get ripped open like that and be moving about. Makes my stomach churn every time I see her." - Immortal Flames Private

  • "Insert your own rumors here!!" - you, potentially

Family

Though not related by blood, Defiant counts the Bride clan of Hellsguard as the only family she has ever known. They dwell deep in the mountains to the North, in a settlement that was once a small trading post where merchants could rest on route to Sharlayan and Ishgard. With the invasion of the Garleans, almost all trade has dried up, but occasional visitors still pass through. The isolated location of her home has lead to certain quirks within her clan... though if she even realizes they're quirks remains to be seen.

  • Mother: Illuminated Bride (Former mercenary, de facto town leader)
  • Father: Stalwart Bride (Hunter and trapper)
  • Father: Indigo Moss (Blacksmith)
  • Older Sister: Regal Bride (Healer, missing)
  • Older Brother: Silent Moss (Scout, hunter)
  • Second Brother: Burly Bride (Lumberjack)
  • ??????: Alder (unknown whereabouts)

Companions

  • Khyran Oisin: Leader of Aethertide and her personal sworn leader. Her affections for him are a poorly-hidden secret; anyone who asks her about it can tell immediately by the heat of her blushing.
  • H'aku Tsesa: Best friend and sworn sister, a hunter and Entrepreneur with Aethertide. She trusts her more than anyone and will do anything if it's for her sake.
  • Vi Lindon: STOP branch leader and fashion icon. A cool, cool woman who Defiant is both intimidated by and worries about in turns.
  • Sokhatai Urumet: Xaela Au-ra and hunter. A tall, stoic man who's gotten close to Defiant... while once she trusted him implicitly, trauma has lead her to grow nervous when he's around. She wishes to help him and care for him despite this, though.
  • Izanami Tatewaki: A fellow Raen Au-ra, and one of the first she ever had a chance to talk to. Izanami fusses over her whenever she's getting in trouble, but she's grown distant after Defiant's Trial.
  • Amon Kiral: A stoic and quiet friend who she nevertheless adores chatting with. She's always trying to get him involved with things, whether he's interested or not.
  • Fabebe Fabe: A firebrand of a Lalafell who she can't help but like. Called her cute once, and will never make that mistake again!
  • John Waterstrike: A friendly Miqo'te healer who assists Aethertide on it's missions. They've grown close enough that he refers to her as a younger sister, but Defiant still calls him Mister out of lingering shyness.
  • Sindri Silvernail: The enthusiastic young youth who's energy is incredibly contagious! They're similar in personality as well as pain, and when they're together productivity goes through the roof!
  • Llinos Silvernail: A doctor and noblewoman as well as Sindri's adoptive mother. She's assisted Defiant with injuries and relationship advice alike, and while she may cause her trouble at times, she's highly respectful and admiring of the hyuran woman.
  • Wemrys Quintos: A powerful but kind bodyguard. The personal escort and bodyguard to Lady Silvernail, never seen without his bandana and axe. Treats Defiant with respect, answering her myriad questions about the Calamity and assuring her fears about being a knight.
  • Connor Tavarin: The Lalafell who isn't a Lalafell. Formerly an Au-ra, formerly a Miqo'te, one of Defiant's best friends. Always kind and supportive, his good will and sweet nature has made him a favorite at the Golden Bazaar.
  • Swyrdaeg Byrtbyldasyn: An enthusiastic Sea Wolf and Fabebe's brother. She held feelings for him, but when he confessed to her things went downhill. Whatever relationship they had is certainly gone now, and she struggles to meet his eyes.
  • Oyunchimeg Ejinn: A Xaela woman who mugged, stabbed, and took Defiant as her slave when she saved her life. Defiant hid their relationship in hopes of reforming Oyu, but ended up tangled into terrible events that lead to her horn being sawed off and a trial to decide the fates of both women. She still has nightmares about her, even though she's been jailed.
  • Jikam Lo'stans: A wandering Keeper and new face in Aethertide, along with his infant son, Titus. Defiant matches his gregarious nature nicely and although relatively new friends their talks are long and deep. Guessed Defiant's crushes just by talking really fast.
  • Toviel Caliguri: An eccentric Elezen man who's quite tall even for his race. Gets along quite well with Defiant, and they share affection for Khyran Oisin that most people would probably call hilarious.
  • Dante Thalmos: Knight, Dragoon, and trainer. Overseas sparring matches and seems to have a particular interest in seeing Defiant improve. Her opinion of him is highly mixed, but she recognizes his ability without question.
  • Rosalin Menoly: A dead woman who continues to walk. A quiet, subdued woman who's care and kind demeanor has drawn Defiant's heart... though she accidentally turned her down? Whoops.
  • Aghurlal Qar'akimusun: The xaela 'fisherman'. A passing accquaintance of Defiant's who not only picked up a wonderful fish for her but taught her a bit of Doman. Might have something in common they don't realize...
  • Aulsoix Claimane: A duskwight noble of Ishgard. One of Def's paid employers, though perhaps she doesn't think to ask him as much as she should about the missions he assigns?
  • Kaito Nagano: An Egg. Bartender at Defiant's favorite dancing venue, and a BIG HECKING NERD.

RP Starters | You May Know Her if...

  • You spend a lot of time working in Eastern Thanalan | Particularly if you frequent the Golden Bazaar often. She's a near constant fixture in the area, and is well known by merchants and the Blades alike... anyone spending a lot of time there would soon come to recognize her as she runs errands in the area.
  • You're a career member of the Immortal Flames | Defiant's just a First Sergeant, but she's dedicated and hard-working, and has a reputation in the company as being willing to pick up ANYONE'S work if they ask nicely enough. If your soldier wants to slack off, she's the girl to get to cover your ass!

Other Notes

Defiant is bisexual and polyamorous but has little experience in either love or romance. You try flirting with the same dozen people who've known you since you were a babe.
