Goals

  • Exorcising the voidsent that currently resides in his little sister.
  • Capturing any and all Ishgardian deserters in the name of the Holy See.
  • A roll in the hay every once in awhile to keep him spry.

Religion

Having been clothed and fed by the Holy See after a childhood as a street urchin, Dresden is wholly devoted to the religion of Halone and the Archbishop to the point of it being fanatical. Attempting to disengage him from practicing his scriptures would be extremely unwise.

Alignment

Lawful Neutral: Devoted to both Ishgard's country and main religion, Dresden does fall back on their code first before utilizing his own personal one. At any rate, politics, laws, and any such foreign policy matters little to him if it does not benefit Ishgard.

Personality

A combination of pragmatism from a life on the streets and the religious doctrine of the Holy See have made Dresden somewhat unhinged, torn between being pure and devout or hedonistic and primal. Doubled even more of his attraction to the premarital deviant behavior which is frowned heavily by the Holy See, his continual switching between sin and piety has earned him many warm beds with eager soldiers and nobility alike and a swift lashing for it much later. This has only served to make his thirst for passion almost insatiable for he is constantly forbidden to do it. Because of his dual-like state of mind, he has quite a few different personas tailored for every occasion.

Towards strangers, Dresden appears very amicable, able to talk with people and on the surface seem very put together and eloquent in order to lower his companion's guard. This is due to his job as a service to the Holy See as he is constantly searching for Ishgardian deserters to drag back for sentencing. He is especially polite and respectful toward Elezens, for they make up a good number of royalty back in Ishgard. Should he find an Elezen deserter, his approach of capture tends to err on them living than dying, as his orders for potential royalty are different than civilians.

His behavior towards his sister is a different facet. He is aggressively protective towards her because of her condition and fear that if she becomes close to someone, that person could be in danger and therefore endanger the both of them should word spread. Before his journey, he had been famously known to chase off her suitors, threatening death to all who try. This has caused many unwanted rumors to abound, most implicating lust for his own sister, much to his disgust. He is much more soft-spoken and gentle around her, even more so due to his guilt.

In the presence of the Holy See and the Ishgardian houses, Dresden acts as a model disciple of the faith: polite, reserved, and completely devoted to the scriptures. This is where the opposite of his duality comes from, his supposed 'light' side to counter his dark.

It's only in battle or when he's seducing does his dark personality show. Bloodthirsty and decadent, Dresden enjoys escaping his pious persona and engaging his inner street urchin, often using a silver tongue and animal-like movements to secure his prey. This is reflected in his magic and thirst for mana, creating a devastating destructive force that would make many cringe attempting.

Quirks

  • When surprised or amused, Dresden's left eyebrow would often quirk up should he avoid saying anything.
  • Sometimes he slips personas when unfocused, dipping between his eloquent side and his bloodthirsty one without realizing it. One could tell long enough when Dresden starts to stop speaking in structures and begins to shorten his words and adopt more slang into his speech. The most common offender is saying 'Aye' instead of 'Yes'.
  • While teasing be it innocent or not, he tends to sensually purr it out. This was a problem back in Ishgard as many would misinterpret his joking around to actual intent and would alert the clergy about it.
  • He's been sick after rain storms on beaches. Twice. This is because of his mana problem which is naturally tied to his lifeforce. Oftentimes he's easily prone to illness such as colds or flus due to a weakened immune system that comes from the aetherial tether.

Flaws

  • Impatience is a common thing for him. Tackling a mundane task only serves to be vigorously completed as he feels it wastes his precious time doing important things.
  • Dresden is prone to selfishness, a trait that caused his little sister to be possessed by a voidsent in the first place. Even after that, he has yet to place him or his sister above everything else save the Holy See.
  • There is also an issue with his fanaticism to the Holy See, a product intended by the Archbishop and the houses to homogenize the population. Oftentimes he will follow their orders blindly, regardless of the consequences.
  • Oftentimes he can be flighty with his desires, which makes it nigh-impossible for him to be locked down into any meaningful relationship. Should someone prove boring to him over time, he will idly wander to the next person who has caught his interest.

Fears

His duality and struggle with keeping his faith and his vices in check make it hard for him to establish meaningful relationships if not at all. While the thought of enraging Halone terrifies him, the idea of becoming celebate scares him the most. This has constantly put him and the other followers of the Holy See at opposite sides for the most part. He's kept along because of his usefulness to Ishgard in general.

Another great fear of is his little sister devolving back into an abomination due to the voidsent he unwillingly put into her. This, in turn, makes him fear death. Should he die, the possession would go unchecked and her life would no longer be her own.

Lately, his fear stems from his growing thirst for mana, many of which he is still too weak to sustain his own as he has yet to master the Black Mage class. He has resorted to siphoning mana from others as a result to combat his growing lethargy, often disguising the action as passionate intent.

Talents

Dresden has always been naturally talented in the arcane arts. Whether it is from a family he does not know or not, his prowess alerted the Holy See enough to pluck him and his sister from the streets. And with reading and writing at his disposal, he has proved a valuable asset to the fight against the dragons, employing various magics and curses designed to slow them down.

On the social side, Dresden can be quite the silver tongue in conversation, often using thought-provoking words to disorient and control a person to his side. Oftentimes he uses them to either draw a person in or have them lash out. Either way, the conversation must needs to be manipulated to his favor.

Intelligence

While he has natural intuition due to his earlier years on the streets, he picked up quite a bit of an academic streak once he was taught to read and write by the Holy See. This has made him extremely eloquent and especially a scholar in an arcane sense, but other subjects make him a very poor student such as swordplay mechanics and/or agricultural studies for example.

Aside from the arcane studies, he's more socially intelligent or 'street smart' and therein where he's most comfortable at.

TV Tropes

  • A Taste of the Lash: Had this almost weekly for flirting with stationed soldiers all in a tizzy.
  • Bi The Way: Has no problems finding beauty in the male or female form.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: At the height of his anger and at the cusp of breaking the barrier into the next level of his magical training, Dresden internally wished to do all he could to stop his sister from deserting Ishgard. The flair of magic was enough to break the seal of a trapped voidsent, seek out that magic to consume, and possessed his sister, turning her into an abomination which killed her lover and prevented the escape. Dresden was forced to use an Allagan artifact to amply his magic enough to tether his aetherial essence to her in order to spiritually subdue the voidsent.
  • Big Brother Knight Templar: When his sister planned on leaving Ishgard with her lover, Dresden did everything short of sending the Holy See after them in the hopes of stopping her. Then things just got worse from there...
  • Black Mage
  • Blood Magic: Dabbled in a bit of this as payment for saving his sister. This is also used for the Convert spell which trades life energy in exchange for extra mana.
  • Church Militant: Most of the fighting Dresden gets himself into is usually under the orders of the Holy See.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Has no problem doing morally questionable things to further his agenda and he'll even be polite doing it.
  • The Heretic: Was formerly this due to previous allegations of bedding male companions that lacked evidence until Dresden gave it away when Dalumud fell. He was later given a reprieve for his crimes by becoming a Heretic Hunter outside of Ishgard.
  • Lawful Neutral: A mix of type 1 and 3. The word of the Holy See is final to Dresden, but there are exceptions where he interprets the law to suit his own agenda.
  • Life Drinker: Before he mastered the Black Mage art, the constant draining of his mana had him siphoning other magic users to sustain himself. To hide this, he kissed his 'victim' to make the connection upon the mana user. Currently, he does not require sustenance of this sort any longer.
  • Level Drain: An in character reason why Dresden's magical power was devolved back to level one at the start of the game. The aetherial tether that's subduing the voidsent inside of his sister had been slowly draining his mana until it started to eventually tap into his life force. This signaled the events of the game as he uses the Black Mage class to grow strong again and learn to constantly replenish his mana.
  • Morality Pet: The reason why he hasn't spiraled into decadence is for his little sister, though some of the other Eorzeans he's managed to infiltrate is starting to gnaw at his hard center. Menel and Nylesa are heading in this direction as well.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: When asked if he would abandon Ishgard should they become the next Garlean Empire, Dresden simply said no.
  • Staff of Authority: Dresden's favorite weapon to carry is a staff. It's fun to whack people on the head with it.
  • Street Smart: Comes with the territory of living on the streets at a young age.
  • Tall Dark and Snarky
  • The Unfettered: There is little that can stop him from getting what he wants. Maybe boredom if it's got nothing to do with his main goals.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: There is nothing he won't do for Ishgard and believes he is favored by Halone because of his deeds.
  • You Are What You Hate: Hatred of voidsent aside, he is reduced to imbibing other mana like Mormo to power the very seal that suppresses a voidsent.

Abilities and Skills

Personal

  • Agility: Being able to slip away quickly, sometimes without detection, to avoid confrontation.
  • Charisma: Is able to carry on a conversation and lower a person's guard down with a friendly smile.
  • Misdirection: Can lie on a whim and build up stories from them without breaking down. It is also used to twist a person's words and turn it against them.
  • Determination: Once his sights are set upon someone or a goal, he can become relentless with consequences.
  • Intellect: Able to quickly learn things if he wishes to set his mind to it. (Often times he doesn't.)

Relatives

  • Mother: Unknown
  • Father: Unknown
  • Valeria Voltaire (sister): Dresden's only relative and he's not even sure if it's by actual blood or not. She has been his anchor to survive the streets of Ishgard in hopes of a better life and was the catalyst for him agreeing refuge in the Holy See. In exchange for his participation of worship, she was able to live a comfortable life until she was possessed by a voidsent indirectly by her brother. After it was suppressed, she has no recollection of it happening, nor will Dresden speak of the abomination within her. She has not seen Dresden in five years due to his traveling.

Positive

  • Aerostein Epitaph: Non-religious, compassionate, and a mage of the light, he is everything Dresden despises, but it's forbidden enough that it intrigues him. Aero knows about Dresden's mana problem and became one of his many victims to slake that thirst. When he should have killed the Hyur to prevent his secret from surfacing, Dresden miraculously let him live for some reason. In a rare act of compassion, Dresden has refrained from pursuing Aero for he has other demons to contend with already as a sign of friendship.
  • Ciel Wulfe: A Bard that Dresden has become very acquainted with and have journeyed with this adventure before into the depths of Stone Vigil. He has respect for Ciel's maturity and wisdom, often befitting a true Elezen.
  • Deverell Jinx: A fellow Thaumaturgist that joined the Ossuary at the same time Dresden did. Dresden often has conflicting morals with Jinx, especially regarding bedmates. He is aware of Dev's interest in him, but would rather not sully a companionship with unnecessary baggage.
  • Gus Pumpkinweed: An enterprising merchant with a penchant for pumpkins. Impressed with Gus' passion for goods and his own appreciation for merchants, Dresden offered his services to the Lalafell's growing business as his new bartender. Though the orange color of his uniform may take some getting use to...
  • Hiro Ayami: A strange man that came attached to Nylesa when Dresden met him. Dresden believes him to be some kind of homunculous construct unable to understand hyur attachment seeing as the man has no interest in affection. He named the Cherry Bomb Calcifer much to Dresden's dismay.
  • Katiti Kati: Second in charge to Gus and a strict manager that oftentimes grates on Dresden's nerves. She's got him 25 points under during his job orientation and had pulled him by the ear like a child when he was ill and lied about it during the second orientation to avoid losing points. He's got a kind of twisted soft spot for the Lalafell, seeing as she reminds him vaguely of the female clergy back home.
  • Menelwen Veara: The polite and elegant Elezen that Dresden oftentimes ogles at just because. He admires her cooking and presence as it reminds him of the noble houses and the Elezens therein. She also has an ample bosom that he appreciates.
  • Nadeau Celeste: A young woman Dresden met once, but had a positive impression on. They had quite an animated conversation about curses and aetherial tethering, something Dresden is desperately searching an answer to.
  • Nylesa Tou: One of the new servers of the Piquant Pumpkin. Dresden found a good synergy working with her during mock orientation, one that he hadn't found yet with any other server. Hopefully she's a permanent addition seeing as she could help deal with the new menace in the bar and keep Dresden from destroying the cabinets in frustration. Dresden has become oddly attached to her, often willing to tease and cajole her whenever possible.
  • Sarial Hawke: A Highlander that both intrigues and infuriates Dresden, often because of their clashing ideals. They've met only once, though Dresden sometimes believes he should seek her out again and destroy her heroic ideals with his silver tongue and pragmatism.
  • Sethaner Somerville: One of the bouncers for the Piquant Pumpkin who got between Dresden and a crazy Lala. Nicknamed Big Guy, Dresden enjoys trying to get him in trouble with Katiti, which earned the both of them ear pulls for their mischief. If there's anyone strong enough that Dres could depend on, it'd be Seth.

Neutral

  • S'imba Tia: A member of the Piquant Pumpkin that Dresden bet on during a brawl with S'honji in the Quicksand. He won the bet but apparently forgot that he promised part of his winnings to the Miqo'te. Good thing he was passed out at the time!
  • Sigurd Rainecourt: An intellectual that Dresden met at a beach party. His folktale about the Three Aldgoats was probably one of the most amusing tales of the night.
  • Heartsong Tailchaser: A seeming bestial Miqo'te who was hunting in the beach during the beach party. Dresden was intrigued with her peculiar personality and was entertained by her story of how her people received their tails.

Negative

  • Aaron Glacier: Impulsive and overcompensating, Dresden has no love for such a combination without maturity and/or responsibility for one's actions to back it up.
  • Calcifer the Bomb Cherry: A tiny bomb cherry that Dresden discovered in the liquor cabinet in Fisherman's Bottom. The creature instantly attached itself to Dresden and made his life miserable while working the bar in the Piquant Pumpkin by bouncing on his head and eating everything in sight. Some of the nicknames include Blistering Bunion, Flaming Freak, Annoying Aethercreature, and Sodding Shitehead to name a few. While he hates the thing, he acknowledges its potential use in the bar, often using it to fire up tea for the baristas and servers so he doesn't have to do it himself.
  • Pyralis Targaryen: An unnamed bard that spat alcohol in Dres' face at one point in Gridania. Seeking bloodshed, they ended up in a quick physical altercation only for the bard to escape amidst the bar brawl.
  • Rhysati Lhea: A Miqo'te woman attached to Menel, Hiro, and Nylesa's company, Dresden has very little respect for her as they have clashed in ideals before. Where she finds him decadent, he finds her irritating.

Music Themes

Note: Vocal Songs are attributed themes in which the lyrics seem to relate or partially relate to the character. They don't mean to resemble the character's voice. The instrumental themes are meant to give an idea of the atmosphere around the character. Songs with character names (example: "Tidus's Theme") are NOT meant to indicate that the character is like the theme owner. I just find the instruments and melody fitting, not the character the song was originally addressed to.

Current Residence

The Goblet, Ul'dah

Before Dalamud's Fall

Birth and childhood (0-10)

Dresden was the bastard offspring of a visiting Black Mage and a scullery maid, whom the latter was fired from for her indecent tryst with the guest. Left to fend for herself, she nearly lost Dresden in childbirth. By miracle, he gave breath soon after when she curled under a shrine dedicated to Halone. "Blessed by Halone herself," was one of the few things he remembered his mother telling him.

During his infancy, his mother used him as a pity device in order to scrounge for food and shelter in the streets and, as soon as he was able to walk and talk, left him in a halfway shelter of some sort with the other street children while she danced for gil for many nights. She became pregnant again when Dresden was eight winters old and did not survive the second birth this time.

Despite a family offering to take his newborn baby as their own to ease his burden, Dresden selfishly kept the only thing left of his mother as his own. Determined, his little sister became the focus of his goals and his obsession with control. After all, if he could take care of Valeria at such a young age, then he could conquer anything life could hand him.

Teen Years

Even from a young age Dresden seemed to have an inkling of a talent for manipulating aether into magic. It wasn't until he was eleven winters old though that it actually manifested into something he could somewhat control. A spark here or there to create a warm fire, he earned many gil this way doing simple arcane tricks with the sparks he could conjure which alerted the Holy See. Sending an Inquisitor over for careful surveillance, they offered him a chance to build up his innate magic as an instrument of Halone.

Seeing this as an advantage to both him and Valeria, Dresden eagerly accepted on the condition that his sister lived comfortably for once. While his sister finally had a full belly and a warm cot to sleep in, Dresden spent many tireless nights being tutored and trained to accept the Holy See as his to protect and answer to and nothing else. Affirming his beliefs, he was taught to read and write and quickly developed his magic through what few arcane tutors were available.

But things were not so smooth. As he grew older, the pious teachings regarding conserving passion for the continuing existence of Ishgard's dwindling population, deviant behavior like lying with other men was considered a waste of resources and therefore forbidden. An internal fight between his religious and his primal side waged on for many winters, but even temptation could not be suppressed for long. Oftentimes he had been accused of 'dabbling', but there were hardly any evidence to back up these claims enough for a hearing. And any evidence was quickly dismissed with his well-known rounds of laying with other women. Many times the clergy turned a blind eye in regards to him, seeing as he was becoming a valuable resource of magic to be tapped into against the Dravanians.

This mix of guilt and desire for control was slowly warping Dresden's mindset, unable to decide which path to choose that would grant him the greater salvation. Near the end of his teenage years, he's simply learned to cope by lying and asking Halone for forgiveness in secret, an unstable but effective middle road for his psyche.

When Eorzea was in a crippling war with the Garlean Empire, most of Ishgard had been cut off, so Dresden was not privy to the Garlean's effort to bring Dalamud upon their very heads. As fire rained down from above during Dalamud's descent and Bahamut's rampage, Dresden saw this as the end of the world and completely snapped, believing that this was Halone's fury upon him. He openly revealed his sins to the Holy See and was imprisoned to await judgment.

After Dalamud's Fall

Adulthood

It was a year in captivity did he find out about his sister from an Inquisitor comrade, who wished to break her vows to the clergy and escape Ishgard with a deserter of the army. Offering to let Dresden reveal his sister's intentions to the Holy See in exchange for freedom, Dresden spent many nights mulling over the idea while being wracked with anger and betrayal over her. Those who abandoned Ishgard were treated lower than beggars and oftentimes sent to the army, their lives sacrificed on the front lines as redemption. His uncontrollable mental state mixed with his flaring untapped magic and the unstable flow of aether brought on by Dalamud's fall and the primals resurfacing awakened a voidsent trapped deep within the tomb he was imprisoned in. Using these factors to break free, it heeded Dresden's deepest desire and tracked and possessed his sister, hoping to lure Dresden and consume his aether.

Deciding to implicate Valeria's lover to the Holy See so that the blame may not be put so much upon her, Dresden gave up to the plan to the clergy and was free to pursue them in order to secure his freedom. It was after he tracked them down did he find his possessed sister hovering near the corpse of her dead lover, completely drained of his life force.

Horrified, Dresden managed to subdue Valeria with a binding cast of magic but knew it temporary. Purging a voidsent once possessed was nigh impossible and there was nothing he could research from Ishgards' libraries. No, he had to find a temporary way to suppress the voidsent at the very least and spare her life. Amplifying his magic using an Allagan artifact he had stolen from the royal treasury, Dresden used an ancient blood spell to tether his aetherial essence to her's, his spell forever primed using his own mana to prevent the voidsent from taking hold.

This came at a great loss to his magic for he was quickly losing the ability to store a great supply of mana within him. The spell was slowly stripping him of his magic and, eventually, started to tap into his very life force. His sister finally recovered from the possession, but knew nothing about what had transpired nor the fact that she was slowly draining the life out of her own brother.

A Realm Reborn (Present, 26)

Reaching the end of his magical reserves, Dresden refused to die. For if he did, then the voidsent would wake up and possess his sister again and that would just not do. Realizing that Thaumaturgy's Umbral Ice and Astral Fire was used to expend and replenish mana almost infinitely, Dresden approached the Holy See and asked to be transferred out of Ishgard as a heretic hunter, recapturing deserters and sending them back to Ishgard to face judgment.

His request was approved and he left Ishgard once and for all to wander the rest of Eorzea as the Holy See's bounty hunter, using information and secrets to achieve his very end. His true objective, to seek a way to purge the voidsent from its possession and break the aetheral tether, is second only to his duty to Ishgard and Halone's will herself.

He traveled to Limsa Lominsa, having taken the wrong ship, and was forced to deal with the wayward politics there before he was granted access to Ul'dah. It was there that he came across the Piquant Pumpkin proprietor to provide both a friendly front and access to a wide range of people. This makes it easy for him to track potential heretics and a sustainable amount of gil to survive.

On the same cloth, he joined a secret guild called Grim, though he's rarely called upon which is perfect for him. It is merely a safehaven for him to escape to should he run out of places to rest.

Eventually, he was plagued with strange dreams which he had waved aside as due to low mana and lack of sleep. Scrambling for the Piquant Pumpkin's opening day, he found a strange tattoo burned into the back of his hand, unable to find the origins of its appearance.

During opening night, he was greeted by a blind Miqo'te who seemed interested in meeting with him privately. It was there that he discovered he was marked by the Nymian star of vengeance. Fearing he had been cursed, he turned to Menel, who seemed to believe he will turn into a Tonberry should he let it go unchecked. Taking Menel's theory of stopping it to heart, he quickly began his tutelage for the scholar art with extremely mixed results.

But Black and White Magic were anathema to each other, even moreso since the Elementals had turned their backs upon him for his sins in Ishgard.

Selfishly disregarding the consequences of disobeying the Elementals, word came of a special scrying orb located in the Conjurer's guild was blessed by the Elementals themselves. Imbibing the artifact could help him circumvent his banning by them. Using a poisoned guild leader as a cover up, he managed to not only claim a list of possible Ishgard refugees from the guild, but also use their commotion to steal the Conjurer's Orb during the confrontation.

The hunt for the orb soon began along with rumors spreading of a new drug called Dream Ink among Ul'dah. Using the orb was soon becoming detrimental to his health and the drug provided sufficient strength to subdue the pain of using it. He has since become a recreational user and dealer in order to access the potent stock.

Secret Story

The intrigue surrounding the story of his possessed sister has been tampered with.

When Dresden was offered freedom in exchange for bringing Valeria and her lover in for heresy, he confronted her in the hopes of criminalizing her lover instead. When she refused and swore herself against Halone, Dresden snapped and killed her in a blind fury.

Distressed and broken over what he had done, an Ascian appeared before him, offering a way to 'fix' the problem.

Upon the Ascian's instructions, Dresden summoned a voidsent using an Allagan relic and tricked it into killing Valeria's visiting lover to snuff out witnesses. Then, using every inch of his magic, he condemned the voidsent into Valeria's corpse and resummoned her back to 'life'.

He implanted memories into the voidsent, believing itself to be actually Valeria before tampering his own memory of the incident, unable to take the guilt. This is the action which turned the Elementals away from him, locking the possibility of Conjuring until he destroys the abomination he had created.

However, the spell is not constant. Dresden must continue to feed the 'form' he had given the voidsent and genuinely believes that he is saving his sister due to his tampered memories.
