History

Felix Drake, as most come to know him, was not born in Eorzea as he claims. His parents weren't traveling merchants that had him in some random stretch of land, and he wasn't raised on the road. This, and the rest of his past as he tells people who ask, was merely a story he developed to not be killed or imprisoned on the spot should his true origins come about.

His true name is Felix van Scelan, and he was born in Garlemald to a well-respected, but minor family. While wealthy enough to be considered nobles, the family lived a more draconian life than most of the nobility, focusing most of their efforts in improving the growing empire's military. As such, almost as soon as he was old enough to walk, Felix found himself with a blade in his hand, learning the art of war. It cost him an resemblance of something anyone would call a childhood. When he wasn't being instructed in the use of a myriad of different weapons he was dropped into academic studies. Only the bare minimum of time was spent on proper instruction on noble life, so he would be able to conduct himself around the rest of nobility and not offend everyone in the room.

Once he was old enough he was enlisted into the imperial army, starting off as a common foot soldier instead of being granted an officer's rank immediately due to his birth. It was expected that anyone with goal to lead men in war had to first share the same burdens of the men they would be commanding. He fought in numerous conflicts under the empire's banner, slowly raising through the ranks. Eventually he would obtain the rank of centurion, but instead of holding a typical role in a legion, he was placed in command of a small, elite force of only eight soldiers. Their missions were secret, and they often worked away from the main force of the legion, working behind enemy lines carrying out sabotage, assassinations, and reconnaissance.

Felix and his unit were ultimately attached to the VIIth Legion under Legatus Nael Van Darnus. They never expected to meet as fierce a resistance from the Eorzean Alliance as they did, with the city-states combining their resources in an effort to halt the empire's salvation of their land. While Nael was admittedly pursuing the extremes in his conquest, did the Eorzeans not realize the Garlean Empire was merely trying to save them from the threat of the primals? Too dutiful to question the sanity of his legate, Felix led his men on mission after mission, at times staying deep undercover to work behind the lines of the so-called Grand Companies. Doubts would start to form, however, as Nael's actions became increasingly erratic, the man seeming to be loosing his sanity. Several of his men started to whisper that they were no longer doing the empire's work. And when Felix managed to learn of the plan to drop the moon Dalamund, he worked with the Legatus Gaius Van Baelsar, as he had served under Gaius in the XIV Legion early in his career, to try and help the Eorzeans avoid utter annihilation. But not all of his unit agreed, some voicing that the Eorzeans deserved to die with their beastmen tribes and horrific primals...One in particular, a man named Crassus, reported back of their actions, and on the eve of the Battle of Cartenau, Felix and his brothers and sisters in arms were set upon by their own.

He survived the betrayal, if barely, while his closest friends and allies died around him. Taking to the field alone at Cartenau, near death, he was beset by both side--one seeing him as just a Garlean invader, the other as a deserter and traitor. He sought out the one who betrayed him, though as they crossed blades, Bahamut awoke from his prison. As Mega-Flare leveled the terrain, a white light surrounded him, a strange voice speaking inside his head that he still had a part to play in the shadows...

When he awoke he found himself, bleeding and battered in the snowy mountains of Ishgard. He was found by a patrol of House Haillenarte, and they took him back to their keep to recover and interrogate. They quickly found the man's memory to be mostly lost, all he could recall was being attacked by a massive dragon...They offered him a place to rest and recover. He eventually earned their trust when the keep was attacked by dragons, and despite holding no real reason to, he took up a spear and fought with the defenders instead of hiding and protecting himself. Such actions gained him a place in the House, and he served them to repay the debt he felt he them for saving him, and his skill was such that he even earned admittance into the dragoons. Things turned for the worse, however, when the Garleans returned to Eorzea, and some started to venture into Ishgard. Sheer fate and bad luck would have Felix encounter his former unit mate, the man that betrayed him, the sight bringing back lost memories. A blizzard forced them to part before they could settle the score, but Crassus sought to end the conflict before it could begin. Using spies inside the Ishgardian houses, he had Felix framed to be a dragon cultist, trusting the inquisitors to do his dirty work. And they nearly did...except, once again, Felix proved hard to kill, as he survived the Witch's Drop.

Leaving his ruined life in Ishgard behind, he took up the mantle of adventurer. Knowing Crassus was out there, killing the man became his goal, so he could lay the memories of the men and women that had died by the betrayal to rest. As the conflict with the Garelans and the Eorzeans escalated, he took a more involved role, aiding the various Grand Companies and eventually joining the Order of the Twin Adder, and acting where he could to undo the damage the Garleans were causing to the people they were causing to suffer. Crassus had taken up his old tactics, operating deep behind Eorzean lines, only he would target all who got in his way, innocents and civilians, instead of just military targets. Such an abuse of power Felix couldn't ignore, and made it his immediate goal to stop the man. But he still has to wonder just how he survived that battle of Cartenau, and what that voice meant...

While in Ul'dah once, and finding himself in need of aide, he was pointed to the direction of the Order of the Sword and Rose by an informant named Wymond. After meeting them, and for reasons he isn't entirely certain of, he ended up joining their ranks, a large brake from his lone wolf ways. Despite seeming to fit in well with the group, and finding a sense of camaraderie he had thought lost with the death of his unit, he still has let to reveal much about himself to them. After all, even if he is a traitor and a deserter, he is still a Garlean, and holds some loyalty still to his homeland. And few, he believes, would accept that...

Personality

Felix is a military man that has suddenly, and unexpectedly, found himself thrust into the life of an adventurer. As a soldier he was a skilled leader and great tactician, valued by his commanders for his discipline and ability to get whatever task that was assigned to him done, and loved by his men for treating them as more than just pieces of a military machine. His style of fighting, and thus his style of warfare, is a cautious and planned one, designed to minimize risk to those under his command. Fast, precision strikes are preferred over prolonged engagements, to surprise and overcome the enemy before any resistance could be mounted.

As such, he’s a very analytic man, taking in everything around him, and always has a plan brewing in the back of his mind to deal with almost any situation.

But his warrior outlook on life is tempered by a code of honor that has always been upheld in his family. It is the duty of the powerful to protect the weak, to keep the wolves from the sheep. Abusing power only proves that one is undeserving of it, and where ever he has gone Felix has done what he can to help those that he can. Be it through aiding the poor to get back on their feet, or defending refugees from soldiers looking for spoils of war, he tries to do what he sees as right to the best of his abilities. He is slow to anger, but once there, he never forgets, and he does have a hard time forgetting grudges once his anger has been earned. For the most part he keeps to himself, though tried to be sociable when approached. But due to his own past, he is slow to trust, and even slower to reveal much about himself.

So, naturally, a man such as described has a bit of a hard time fitting into the typically more carefree life of an adventurer. No desire to explore and see the world seizes his soul, and there is no want for wealth or glory. It is simply a means to an end, to get around Eorzea as easily as possible, to settle a certain grudge and put past wrongs right.

Despite the war between Eorzea and the Garlean Empire, however, he feels no ill-will or hatred towards Eorzeans. The war was nothing personal, and he does regret the amount of blood spilled on both sides. While he once believed that the Eorzeans are foolish for opposing the empire, for they only wish to unify the land to put an end to conflict and erase the Primal threat, he gives them credit for standing for what they believe in. And, in their defense, he does recognize that the legate in charge of the invasion wasn't presenting them many other options other than war. Now he sees how poorly Garlemald has treated Eorzea, and does the only thing he feels is right: aide them in their defense of their homes and freedom.

  • Nights of sleep, as rare as they are, when he isn't daunted by memories of past sins and actions

Dislikes

  • Killing for no reason, or sport.
  • Sand. It just get everywhere, and especially in places it has no right to be
  • People who break their word, oaths, and/or vows
  • Buzzards. The damn birds are too aggressive and annoying for their own good

Hobbies/Talents

  • A decent enough player of the harp and piano. Nothing that could challenge a bard, but good enough to not make a bard cringe either.
  • Discussing history, or military tactics, or both with those that can give a good conversation on the matter.
  • Is skilled in various fighting forms and weapons, notably gunblade, spear, and daggers.

Other

  • He had sworn off drinking. Recent events caused him to take the habit up again, much to the concern of some of those around him.
  • Despite slowly making friends among Eorzeans, he's hesitant to reveal much about himself.
  • A woman is sorely needed in his life, before he gets himself killed.

Relationships

Family

  • Father - Caius Van Scelan: A fiercly loyal servant of the emperor, Caius leads the small noble house his family has been granted ever in the emperor's service. Making a name for himself in various conflicts and putting down rebellions throughout the empire, he retired from service before the conflict with Eorzea. His current status is unknown.
  • Mother - Lillia Sas Scelan: Not a native Garlean, but from one of their provinces. She won Caius's heart while he was stationed in her homeland, breaking through his rough, soldier exterior. He married her, thus giving her citizenship, and she took to following him around on his deployments. He took her back to Garlmald when he retired. She was Felix's sole source of comfort in his early life, trying to grant him what bits of childhood she could, while his father pushed for him to master the arts of war. Her current status is unknown.

Enemies

  • Crassus nan Sintas - Once Felix's closest friend, now his greatest foe. A great admirer of Nael Van Darnus, he couldn't accept the treason Felix committed by siding secretly with Gaius and aiding the Eorzeans. While he could not make claims against an officer such as Gaius, he turned on his former friend, leading them into an ambush of Nael's soldiers. Felix alone survived, though was left for dead. The two have sworn to end the other, and their quest for revenge will likely end with neither alive.

Everyone Else

Disclaimer: This is a work in progress, and I slowly get to do more IC. It's nothing personal if you don't see your character here, as Felix forms opinions on others, it'll end up here. Of course, if you think you should be here, just send me a message so I get my lazy butt in hear and add your character. Also...forgive me if I don't link to your wiki page, I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

NOTE: These are all what Felix himself THINKS about characters, from his impressions IC or events IC. They do not, in any way, pass real judgement, insist upon canon facts, or enact on canonically in any way, shape, or form. They are purely impressions and personal opinions.

  • Konner Kinkaid - The leader of the Order of the Sword and Rose. A man that Felix respects, he is nonetheless wary of the man. Despite their few talks since Felix has come to the Order, the knowledge that they fought on opposites sides of the war that destroyed Kin's homeland haunts Felix, as he can't help but fear that will still cause tension between them down the line, if not worse. But until such a time, Felix obeys the man like the soldier he is. He's grateful for the place allowed to him in the Order, a place he never expected to find, and until such a time that troubles arise, he plans to follow Kin until the end.
  • C'rhisi Tohbei - A bard of the Order, and their Marshall for Gridania and the Twin Adders. When they deploy on missions, Felix often is assigned to her command, hence his common occurance to call her "commander." Probably the kindest soul he had ever met, he is in awe of her, the miqo'te being someone simply inspiring. Though , for that same reason, he has to shun the help she keeps trying to offer him. While they all carry their own demons and are haunted by their own ghosts...She is all but a mother to the Order, it seems to him, and he couldn't in good faith add his troubles to the rest she takes on for herself helping everyone.
  • Ciel Wulfe - He's had little interaction with the beautiful elezen that serves as the Order's Marshal to Ul'dah and the Immortal Flames. While some passing conversation and reactions he's witnessed from her has him suspicious on some matters about her, she strikes him as a loyal ally and a someone he's grateful to have at his back...And the type of woman to take great pains not to get on the bad side of.
  • Lucydne Markfyre - Another member of the Order of the Sword and Rose, he didn't know much about her until they weathered a blizzard together in Coerthas, followed by another run-in where they traveled several days together to aide one another. He counts her as a friend and trustworthy, and she knows more about him know than any other in the Order save one. He is concerned about her, though, with what he's learned of her, and hopes he can help her before she ends up in the same grave he's walking towards himself.
  • Deirdre Ta'ea - A beautiful elezen he met through the Order, brought around one day by Quarimar. An interesting woman to be sure, her brusque and occasionally rude attitude hardly bothered him the way it bothered others. Their occasional talks showed that they might not be too different from one another, and after a recent incident in Mist, she's the only one in Eorzea that knows almost everything about him. His secret, his woes, the demon chasing him into an early grave...She seems insistent on helping him recover from all of that, though he is reluctant to accept her help, less his presence around her destroy the life she has for herself now.
