History

Founded in the year 1521 of the Sixth Astral Era, the Garlean Empire is a massive, technologically advanced nation located northeast of Eorzea on the continent of Ilsabard. It was once a small republic that barely held even a fraction of the northern reaches of the continent. However, that all changed overnight as a brilliant young Legatus introduced an powerful new technology to the republic's military - Magitek. The republic's territory began to expand by leaps and bounds, and before long the people of Garlemald almost unanimously elected Solus zos Galvus as dictator. In just a few short years, Garlemald had amassed so much territory that it could no longer sustain order within it's borders. In order to alleviate this issue, Solus zos Galvus disbanded the Republic of Garlemald in the year 1521 of the Sixth Astral Era, and erected in it's place an Imperial Regime. Naming himself first emperor of Garlemald, he set out once again to continue his quest for dominance of the three great continents. It was not long before almost the entirety of Ilsabard was under Imperial rule, and shortly after a large majority of the eastern continent, Othard, also fell under their control.

In the year 1557 of the Sixth Astral Era, a mere thirty-six years from the Empire's founding, the Garleans brought their campaign of conquest to Eorzea, swiftly bringing the city-state of Ala Mhigo to its knees. Yet following the subjugation of Ala Mhigo, the Empire suddenly ceased its aggressive expansion. For more than a decade, the continent of Aldenard knew relative peace. In the year 1572, however, the Garlean army once again began its inexorable advance. Using the calamitous arrival of the Seventh Umbral Era to sinister advantage, the Empire prepared to gather the lands of Eorzea into its steely embrace. Though the advent of the Seventh Umbral Era all but obliterated the VIIth Imperial Legion of Garlemald, five years have since passed and Garlemald continues to take root in Eorzea.
