A sell-sword, a shipwright, a thug, a merchant bodyguard, a thief, a cook on a pirate vessel, a prisoner, a smithy, a wanderer. The number of titles that flow from mouths that know Gold Shade describe an individual seemingly free of any goal or strict morality, with people speaking both ill and praise for him depending on the who and where. The one thing that remains constant however is his ever-present 'bad luck'.

Aspects That Stand Out:
A creator at heart.
Devoted to the Twelve.
Constantly expecting the worst.

About

Gold Shade, or Guldiskaet in Roegadyn, descended from the mountains of Abalathia's Spine to Eorzea to find work as a mercenary, while utilizing his skills in metalworking to be the band's mender. He currently bears no sworn allegiance to any one Grand Company, House or Free Company, and he seemingly enjoys this freedom as it has allowed him to pursue his wandering tumbleweed of a lifestyle. The truth of the matter however is that, through repeated events in his life, he is utterly convinced that he is blessed to stand in the shadow of Rhalgr, in that destructive 'luck' follows him no matter where he tread. This idea has forced him to move locations and change professions often due to the superstition that by staying still, whether physically or mentally, he will invite disastrous misfortune to everyone around him.

Examples of this:

  • While working as a Shipwright Gold specialized in working the metal components to the ship. His job was always closely monitored, but one day as the foreman was inspecting his work on a steel bracing for a mast the man was struck by freak lightning that targeted the metal, killing him and splitting the mast at the base. The mast's subsequent collapse caused further grievous injuries. Gold remained unscathed.
  • While working as a pirate ship's cook he served a seafood dish to the Captain, who was discovered to be allergic to this one kind of fish. The ship's doctor was killed in the subsequent fight for succession, and the rest of the crew perished from their own poisoned weapons afterwards having no idea on how to administer the cure. Gold was hiding in the kitchen the whole time. The only survivor.
  • While working as a bodyguard for an elderly merchant, the old man was excited to learn of his daughter's betrothal. He called individual meetings for his servants to give them praise and gifts of great wealth. In Gold's meeting he handed over a priceless statuette, but the old man suffered a heart attack as he handed the object over. When the daughter arrived and saw what had transpired she declared all the servants thieves and seized the rewards. Gold had escaped, but now was on the run.

Variations of this and others have befell Gold throughout his life. He can see no obvious solution to this bar being superstitious of every crack in the floor, weather phenomenon and stray animals crossing his path. He hopes one day to accumulate enough wealth to live comfortably alone in solitude. Away from anything and anyone that may come to harm from his presence and his 'blessing'. Despite these series of events however, he is still utterly devoted to the Twelve in their entirety, and not to any one particular deity.

Notes:
Paranoia revolves around luck. He is constantly observing his surroundings and tries to avoid typical superstitions that invite bad luck.
Forever tired due to said paranoia preventing sleep. That said, he is ever alert and is rarely caught off-guard. Adverse affect is that he is permanently grumpy
Always finds something to do, under the misguided belief that bad luck is similar to aether, and remaining still makes it 'pool' underneath his feet. Highly productive as a result

PERSONALITY

His constant vigilance and downright paranoia of the goings on around him deprives him of rest and this affects his mood greatly. Impatient, irritable, short-tempered and vulnerable to stress, he is a walking powderkeg of emotions just waiting for a loose spark to set him off. But if you were to ignore these sleep-deprived factors of his day to day personality (if he somehow found peace for a few hours), Gold can be quite amiable.

He is often prone to stress when he feels something is going to go wrong (which is fairly often). He has developed tics where he tries to work on something with his hands. This includes crafting, balancing things, stacking objects, rolling his dice or checking and rechecking his gear. By creating things, however temporary at times, he hopes to invoke the blessings of Industry (Byregot's realm) to offset the influence of Destruction (Rhalgr's realm).

Technique/Weapons

While his history may indicate a dedicated brawler Gold himself prefers a more cautious approach. Rarely jumping into conflicts where the odds don't appear to be in his favor, he found his calling in the form of Magitech armaments upon an encounter with an Ishgardian Machinist, who opened his eyes to another approach outside of raw steel, fists or magic. Using a safe range, various gadgetry and a powerful handgun, Gold is much more comfortable surveying combat at a distance where he can easily avoid possible pitfalls while have easier access to a safer retreat if necessary. Since acquiring this method of combat his infighting skills have gotten rusty, but overall, he is still a Hellsguard Roegadyn with a powerful frame, albeit now more clumsy.

RUMORS

N P C

Some of these rumors are untrue, speculation, or are greatly exaggerated.

◢ Common Rumors - Easily overheard. Use these freely!
"Someon' tha' big shouldn'a be actin' like a scared chocobo . He's always lookin' like he's a hair's breadth away from boltin' if somethin' even so much as bumps 'im wrong."
"Handy when it comes to making things. It's the only time I ever don't see him fidget, hah!".
"Cranky bastard. Almost took me bloody head off when I told him what he should do with his bird...course it was inappropriate! Was meant to be funny! What with him fawning over that blasted chocobo alls time".
◢ Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear. Use sparingly or ask first!
"Devout to a fault that one. I've heard him mutter prayers to all of the Twelve".
"He's a bloody pirate. I know so! Saw him get dragged off to the Brig meself after the Barracuda's pulled to port. Must've been a special one too. He was the only one that captured alive".
"That bodyguard? Decent fellow. Nasty business with that merchant's daughter though".
◢ Rare Rumors - Very rarely overheard. Please ask before using!
"Cursed he is. Dangerous. Heard tales of him all over. One thing in common. Death. That man has a trail of blood and bodies behind him, yet nary a pip about who did it. First in Ul'dah with them mercenaries. Killed, 'cept for him. Then a pirate crew. Dead at sea, 'cept for him. A wealthy merchant's family. The rich bastard dies right before the right happiest time in his life, with that man in the room with him. Stay far away from him if'in you treasure your life".
"Man's a devious one, ain't bad though. Destroyed a nasty pirate crew from the inside out. Barracuda's sailed up to find the ship empty of life save for him. Saved us sailor's a headache with those bastards out at sea".
