Jeanne Ornitier is a Midlander Hyur who lived in a small, unnotable village in Coerthas before the Dravanian Horde destroyed it. Trained as a Red Mage by an Ala Mhigan man who took her in, she now makes a humble living in Ishgard as she watches over orphaned children in the Brume.

History

Jeanne was born and raised in a small village in a somewhat forested area of southeastern Coerthas near the Black Shroud, well before the Calamity brought endless winter to the region. She was ten years old when her village was attacked and destroyed by Nidhogg's dragons. Jeanne wandered the Coerthan countryside for a full year without a home, a vagrant moving from small village to small village, before she was found by a Highlander man named Sigmund Blacke, who had fled all the way to Coerthas after Ala Mhigo fell.

Sigmund gave Jeanne food, clothes, and home for a short couple of years, teaching her the art of the Red Mage that he had learned in his youth and sharing with her a fascination for the history of the Fifth Astral Era, but eventually he passed away of old age. Jeanne found herself back in her former vagrant situation, and as if to add insult to injury, shortly after Sigmund's death the Calamity occurred. When Coerthas was covered in snow, Jeanne made her way to Ishgard. Working as a barmaid with a small apartment in Foundation, she has worked out a humble living with just enough gil to get by.

Most of Jeanne’s attention goes to the orphaned children in the Brume, showing them the love and care of a family that they need. Her motherly and caring personality shines through when dealing with them, and if she had the gil for it there is little doubt among those who know her that Jeanne would take in each and every one of them. Alas, she does not.

Character

Appearance

Jeanne's most eye-catching aspect is her long golden-blonde hair, reaching her hips and kept together in a long braid with a blue bow near the end. Her hair is her pride, and the care she puts into it clearly shows. A sapphire pendant marked with the emblem of Halone hangs from a simple, thin chain around her neck, the only memento she still has from her village.

Personality

Jeanne has been described as motherly and kind, but some have also said she is too naive. Despite her history Jeanne is a warm, friendly person, but she is also very easily embarrassed. Her motherly aspect most comes into play around children. Jeanne loves kids and is always looking after them, but this comes back to bite her when she uses too much of her simple barmaid’s paycheck and often finds funds for herself lacking.

Thanks to Sigmund, Jeanne has a fledgling interest the Fifth Astral Era, and fantasies have always and so now the shelves at her home are filled with books of both history and works of fiction. When she has free time and the weather permits it, she is often found reading outdoors. She also has a soft spot for moogles and can't resist holding one if given the chance.

Her past also means she tends to have trouble sleeping and recurring nightmares. If Jeanne can help it she never wants to be alone, even if it just means having a few people within sight and not necessarily interacting with her.

Of course, as a resident of Ishgard, Jeanne is devoted to Halone. The events of her history have not caused it to waver; in fact, it could easily be said that devotion helped her through the years. The revelations of King Thordan and the Knights Twelve did further her distaste for Ishgard's upper class, which had already existed due to the treatment of the Brume, but her faith in the Fury has not worsened for it. A personal hero of hers is Saint Reinette.

Combat

Jeanne does not enjoy combat and tries to avoid it. That said, if forced into a fight she tends to be more of a melee fighter than most Red Mages. Jeanne focuses on empowering her sword first and foremost, and will usually only stand back and cast spells if forced into it. To her, this better shows a desire to protect. However, one spell Jeanne relies on quite often even while within melee range is conjuring blades of aether to fire at her opponents.

Relationships

Family

  • So far as Jeanne knows, her biological family was killed in the raid on her small Coerthas village, and her father figure Sigmund Blacke died of old age after passing on the art of the Red Mage to her. These days she considers her family to be the children she looks after in the Brume.

Friends

  • Jeanne has always loved moogles. She recently met an adventurous moogle from the Twelveswood, and they often stick together. Chances are Jeanne can be found holding him.
