Character Information

"Life has shown me the sweetest love, and greatest sorrows."

Malcom is a character written with a few guiding principles in mind. His is a story based in the ideas of personal redemption, of balancing mercy and vengeance, and the tests of character for a man who has experienced great loss after having the life he fought for. The character is meant to be a testament to the stoicism and determination of a person that refuses to be beaten down by the terrible things that life has thrown their way, and does their best to savor the good moments when they arrive. He is flawed, hypocritical, and the intention when writing him is to present a believable character that can serve in a supporting role, or leading man, depending on the story around him.

Savor pain. Relish it. It reminds you that you're still alive to hurt.

Appearance

Initial Impression
The Highlander sports a heavy build, is broad shouldered and well-muscled with greying hair and teal eyes. Add to that a stern demeanor that belies his friendly nature and it's not uncommon that he comes across as standoffish or brusque from a look. Finishing at half fulm past six while weighing around two-hundred and seventy ponze, only a fair sized Au Ra or Roegyden give the mercenary pause when it comes to physical presence, and he certainly makes up the difference with attitude and presentation.
Presentation & Attire
Favoring tighter, functional clothing that doesn't restrict movement and breathes well, Malcom's attire has him at home on the sea or in the desert, sensible considering Limsa and Ul'dah both are where he spends most of his time and coin. The Highlander prefers utility over flair, but given the opportunity he has no qualms about dressing for attention and the dramatic.

Personality

Mentality
Rough around the edges and impulsive are a common first impression Malcom. The man is not shy about going after what he wants and has a direct manner that can be off-putting to many. Inherently, however, he has a respect for others and especially those who show a strength of character. That is not to be mistaken for a disregard for the weak as a traumatic past has left him sympathetic to those who suffer, and Malcom takes opportunity to build people up where and when he can if they are looking for that support.
Voice
Somewhere between a low baritone and higher bass, age and experience along with more than a few attempts at suffocating the man have left his voice with a distinct rasp underlying his speech.

Alchemy

Poisons make a deadly and easy addition to any arsenal and Malcom is no exception to this avenue of assured victory. A healthy curiosity for easily dispatching his foes led the man to lean on alchemical means of advantage which over time Malcom developed with curiosity from a hobby into... a more expensive hobby. Despite his imposing appearance the man sports an insatiable desire for knowledge, and Alchemy fed this. Malcom moved from a helpless dabbler to an adept and spends a fair share of his off time perusing markets and trade for unique ingredients to produce unique potions as a result. Experimentation and whim are the direction his 'work' in this hobby take and he is just as keen to create something that's an experience to be had as he is to make helpful tinctures.

Cooking

Playing off his experience as an alchemist and love of delicious food, Malcom is a surprisingly good cook. Not that this fact comes to light often but in a pinch and with the right ingredients he has been known to produce stellar meals for a group when the circumstances present themselves. Despite his skill, he doesn't make mention of it and downplays his capability. 'Mediocre at best.' is a common phrase from the man's mouth.

Sixth Sense

Old mercenaries are a rarity, and for good reason. Working in a dangerous field, Malcom is not just some swaddled adventurer but a full blown sellsword who has seen enough of the world to have a good sense for when things are about to go sideways. Call it intuition, call it luck, call it a gut feeling, but when Mal says he thinks something bad is about to happen... he's not far off the mark. If you see him running, don't ask questions. Just try not to fall behind him.

Combat

Grit

Pain is something people avoid. Generally it's a great indicator that a situation has gone sideways and a survival feeling that tells most people that whatever they're doing, they need to stop. For Malcom, however, this natural instinct has been well subverted throughout the years. It turns out if you subject yourself to enough excruciating instances of negative feedback you get used to it. For the most part. Highlander gumption combined with an innate fortitude has allowed Malcom to build up a tolerance to blows and injuries that might bring a lesser man to their knees. Of course most medical professions contend that this isn't a good thing, since it can lead to further injury. Malcom will take their opinion under advisement.

Adaptability

The frontlines are a place that favors a soldier that can think on their feet to win, and especially those that are willing to go the distance to ensure such. Some might mock poisons, or extol the virtues of honorable combat, but Malcom does not throw in with that lot. Survival, and winning, are all that matters to the man when he undertakes a task. Though he won't kick a man when he's down, the Highlander will use any method it takes to bring said man down, adapting on the fly to his opponent's style with anything and everything in his arsenal.

Strength

Not just might, but magical as well. The Ala Mhigan boasts endurance and fortitude when it comes to the aetheric and physical and has held his own against great beasts and mages. Though he'll never rival the truly masterful in the arts of the arcane, a natural knack for weaving aether with his combat makes Malcom a balanced fighter. A magicked bullet or imbued sword that cleans straight through heavy plating is worth its weight in gold.

History

Ala Mhigo
Early Life
Ala Mhigo had always been rife with conflict and violence throughout its history and Malcom was at home in that culture. His youth was uneventful, his parents fair, and the Highlander took a somewhat honorable path in enlisting with the standing armies of the City-State to keep his homeland safe. However as Garlean forces began their march towards Eorzea and launched their conquest with the borders of Ala Mhigo his enlistment became anything but routine.

Theodoric made it all the worse. With the Mad King destabilizing everything that Ala Mhigo had fought to earn and Malcom found his role as a guardian increasingly challenged with orders he dissented from. The fall of Theodoric is well known, but the fate of Ala Mhigo's men-at-arms less so. Conscripted into service for the Garlean Viceroy that now occupied the strife ridden city, Malcom went from one cruel master to another.

The Escape
Recent History
Never one content to sit and let fate direct his path, Malcom bided his time. Too much was at stake to flee initially; the endeavor was not something to be undertaken lightly. However change happens when we least expect it, and from sorrow opportunity arose. With naught left to keep him tied to Ala Mhigo, and the revulsion of his people at the Garlean uniform he wore, Malcom gave up everything and made a desperate attempt to escape. Naught could stand between the man and his freedom, hard won with manipulation and brute force until he finally found himself on the other side of Baelsar's Wall. Near death, but free.

Current Day
Though Gridania is not known for their love of Ala Mhigans a few passing Wood Wailers took pity on the suffering man as he lay bleeding out in the Shroud. Brought back from the brink of death and left to his own devices after, Malcom began walking the long road that he had chosen. Refugees from Ala Mhigo had flooded Ul'dah and the difficulty of taking care of one's self was evident from the beginning. Casting aside his past and letting the label of 'sellsword' be enough of an answer for any who asked the Highlander began to carve out his niche. Brutally effective in his chosen role, Malcom has made a small name for himself as a man who can solve any problem. For the right price.

RP Info

Location & Probability
Places where the character is very likely to be seen
Ul'dah/Limsa: The main places for a good mercenary to pick up work. Malcom frequents between both city-states.
Rest of Eorzea: Gridania and Ishgard are less inclined for a man of his persuasive talents, but that doesn't mean he avoids them completely.
Across the Pond: Not bound to just Eorzea, the man has made trips far and wide in his time. He's no stranger to Kugane, though beyond that is questionable.
Affiliations
Most of these aren’t public, and would have to be asked after!
Pirate Crews: The Highlander found his sea legs a while back and has worked for the few crews that are open to extra hands on a 'trip'.
Gladiator Pit: Not above fighting for extra coin, Malcom has graced Ul'dah's spectacle more than a few times. Not quite made a name for himself, however.
Roleplay Hooks
While the below is by no means comprehensive, it's a kind of spring board for walk-up RP. Longer plots that are meant to run for more than a few quick RP's, please feel free to send me a tell so we can work out a good reason for our characters to get to know one another. I'm always looking for RP, unless I'm actively spamming PvE content.

Seeking Work: Malcom has a reputation for picking up most any job. Guarding a caravan, long term sea shipments, cleaning out a cave of untowardly Spriggans, you name it and pay for it, he'll do it.
Alchemy: What started off as a casual dabbling for an extra edge in a fight with poisons became a full blown hobby that he enjoys when he can. Though he doesn't operate as a full apothecary, he is not shy about selling what he has made.
Pit Fighting: If you're a frequent fighter, or attendee, you may recognized his scarred face and steely teal eyes.

OOC Notes
Player Note
There is a lot of information on this character wiki, but it is by no means completely comprehensive. There are chunks of backstory that are left intentionally vague so that details can be later added as developed through creative writing or in role-play revelation. There are key parts of his backstory that have been left out intentionally, and this is not the full history of my character. Feel free to use Common or Uncommon rumors freely, if you want to use a Rare Rumor as a plot hook or to spark RP, I would ask that you send me a tell first, to make certain it's alright.

What Sort of Roleplayer I am
What I am looking for on an OOC level is long term and impactful Roleplay. Stories are not built over night and rapports are developed over time, and I'm keen on slowly building these foundations for greater stories with people interested in the same. I want to write stories with others that elicit a response, an emotional acknowledgement. That's why I enjoy roleplaying. If you're looking for heavy immersion, sincerity, and realism then you've found the right sort of roleplayer.
Lore Adherence
Everything concerning this character that has not been confirmed by in-game lore should be taken with a grain of salt. Anything that has had to be changed because of lore shifting will be noted below.
