The devastation of the Calamity had its casualties in her family as much as anyone's, killing her father and older sister and crippling her mother. Malin was eager to lend her aid towards rebuilding and helping the refugees, but found that the leadership of the Sworn preferred to use their still-limited power protecting the royal line over all other priorities. She was outraged, arguing that the Sultana and the state were interlinked, and that all effort needed to be spared towards helping the real victims of the disaster. Her low rank and her temper conspired to ensure her arguments went unheard.

A Sworn, even a minor one, forsaking her oath to join those opposed to the Sultana was sufficiently scandalous enough that the Sworn do not speak of her actions, for fear of giving the Syndicate a public relations coup. Their fears were unfounded; Malin was unknown and too low in the ranks for the Syndicate to employ her in such fashion, and when the bulk of the disaster relief was completed, found her employment in the Order of the Orchid, away from the city, in case her employment she was a blundering attempt at Royalist espionage.

Character

General

Malin Greaves is an honest Brass Blade and therefore doomed to die horribly. She will fine you if you stare at her arse.

Appearance

Malin has a pretty face obscured by all the ways she abuses it; she is more likely to be scowling, grimacing, gritting her teeth, or pursing her lips than smiling or laughing. If one can get past that, there are bright blue eyes, skin that's a bit tanned and reddened from working in the desert, and a sprightly laugh underneath a mass of haphazardly chopped dark red hair.

Despite the impracticality of the choice given her profession, she tends to wear makeup with an emphasis on blush. It isn't clear if this is of her own volition or whether Captain Longhaft has weird policies about uniforms.

Behavior

Malin's personality seems to be some sort of experiment by the Twelve in seeing how long a woman can live in a state of constant exasperation. Adventurers annoy her, merchants are an ongoing problem in her life despite literally paying her salary, the other Blade Orders are either hopelessly corrupt or helplessly inept, and even her own position seems to be something she tolerates only grudgingly.

Fortunately this is all kept under a very tight lid, from which a bit of steam only issues if she's deep in the cups or at home with close company. The running bet amongst the Orchid is that she'll snap in six moons. The particulars of that event have inspired an office pool with a hefty prize.

On the job, Malin keeps her nose clean, and fits in reasonably well with the limited amount of graft and corruption present in Highbridge's Blade community. This often puts her at odds with dirtier members of the other Orders.

Combat

General

Malin claims to have trained extensively with the Gladiators before joining the Orchid, and the Order's regular skirmishes with bandits and Qiqirn have kept her abilities from existing only in the realm of theory, leaving a competent and no-nonsense defensive fighter.

One failing of Malin's scruples is in her willingness to fight as dirty as necessary. She will aim for the groin, stab open wounds, and exploit weaknesses until the target is down. Then she starts curbstomping.

Relationships

Romantic Interest     Platonic/Familial Love      Good Standing     Neutral Standing     Poor Standing     Hatred/Intense Grudge

Donnell Greaves - Malin's husband. A few years her senior, Donnell works as a retainer within the Sapphire Avenue Exchanges. Donnell is a smirking, laconic fellow who seems to either be amused by or at least tolerate Malin's bad moods. The marriage is a stable and happy one, but her unwillingness to transfer to a post in the city is a regular source of friction.

Evangeline Primrose - Against Malin's better judgment, she accepted a bribe from Evangeline to delay the arrest of Verad Bellveil. Said bribe turned out to be a concealed smoke bomb. Malin returned the favor in kind with a bit of complimentary state-sanctioned violence, but is still cross at the woman.

Verad Bellveil - A dumb peddler who causes trouble for everybody around him. Malin started investigating him on suspicion of being involved in trafficking dangerous artifacts, and discovered he was in fact the cause of their appearance after botching a robbery at a Pearl Lane warehouse. His many heavily-armed character references convinced her to let him go, but she has insisted he act as a liaison for her when problems in Highbridge come from the city. Privately, she is baffled by how he inspires such faith.
