Early Life

Born in Limsa Lominsa in 1549, Namimi Nami was born a bastard. Her mother, a fishwife's daughter, became smitten with a smooth-talking merchant who left her not long after she became pregnant. Unable to provide for her daughter, she abandoned her to an orphanage before the age of three. Two years later, Namimi fled the orphanage on her own.

After leaving, Namimi lived as a streetwise pickpocket around the city-state until the day she was taken against her will by a pirate. Namimi was rounded up with a group of children—including a young "Captain" Jacke Swallow—to be sold into slavery. They stole both the freedom and innocence of the children, and Namimi would never fully recover from the experience.

This blatant violation of the Lominsan code of conduct attracted the attention of the Upright Thieves. It was a nameless rogue who would liberate Namimi, Jacke, and the other children from bondage, yet the young Lalafell refused to return to life as an orphan. In time, she graduated from pickpocketing to other illicit acts. She was fairly successful until a man attempted to take her life to avoid payment for her services, ending up with his throat slit for his trouble. This caught the eye of a pirate recruiter, who saw potential in the blood-soaked youth.

At fifteen summers, Namimi Nami "the Tsunami" joined the Sanguine Sirens. Her quick wit, deftness with blades, and reliable nature soon saw her handling many black market trade deals in the Lominsan underworld over the next three years. Raiding coastal waters around Vylbrand, she amassed a decent amount of gil for the Sirens during her tenure as a fence dealing mostly in weaponry and merchant goods.

When Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn won the Trident in 1563, and the Lady Infernal prepared to rebel against the new Admiral and her outlawing of piracy. Namimi, however, saw potential in the Galadion Accord for both Limsa and her own position within the underworld through privateering. As a result, Namimi voiced approval of the Admiral's plan despite both verbal and, on occasion, physical opposition from her crewmates. Ultimately, she was vindicated when the Galadion Accord passed. Nami the Tsunami now peddled stolen Garlean materials.

The Rogues' Guild

During 1568 of the Sixth Astral Era, a nineteen-year-old Namimi worked out of the Sirens to sell the spoils of war collected from Garlemald, but she was soon visited by a familiar face. Jacke Swallow, whom she'd met as a child, met, traded, and established a rapport with the young pirate. Now guildmaster of the Rogues' Guild, Jacke punished those who broke the Lominsan code of conduct.

Her use in the Sirens waning with their differing political viewpoints and excursions becoming less frequent under the new laws, Namimi began to consider her options. She ultimately left the Sirens on relatively good terms before joining the Rogues' Guild, where she would remain for the next four years.

As a "Dutiful Sister of the Edelweiss", Namimi was known for her capability. She picked up some bladework from the Far East, though she was nowhere near as skilled as her new guildmaster. What she lacked in combat prowess, however, she made up for through her information-gathering skills and ability to easily blend in as a Lominsan civilian.

Then came 1572 and the Calamity, and all the chaos that came with it. In the wake of the upheaval, Namimi began to consider her role in the larger state of Lominsan affairs. Through acts of piracy, privateering, and upholding the code, she never lost sight of the land that birthed her. It was a feeling of patriotism and desire to defend the realm, then, that saw her leave the Rogues' Guild and enlist in the Maelstrom.

After the Calamity

Half a decade of fighting as a member of the Maelstrom later and Namimi attained the rank of Storm Corporal. Now twenty-eight years of age, she's helped fight Garlemald, kobolds, and sahagin alike in defense of her nation. Recently, she's taken to the company of Doman refugees whom she met through the aid of Jacke.

Under their tutelage, she perfected the bladework she'd imitated from Domans on Othard and achieved the rank of "chunin" for her handling of mudra. It was from the frequent mispronunciations of her senior as a shinobi, Oboro Torioi that the Lalafellin kunoichi gained the nickname "Nami Minami".

Other Information

Name Etymology

Nami's true name, Namimi Nami, follows typical Plainsfolk female naming conventions. She claims to have received her alias from a Doman traveler, who joked at how appropriate it was for a seafaring woman of southern heritage such as herself to be named "Nami Minami". The word "Nami" means "wave" in the Doman tongue, and the word "Minami" means "south".

The name she uses in covert operations, "Namba", is a bit more complicated. Placed the Doman way around, her pseudonym is "Minami Nami", which can be expressed by the characters "南" and "波", respectively. Together, "南波" can be read as "Namba", which is homophonous with a standard style of walking employed by ninja: "Namba-Aruki". Nami typically walks in this style, which is difficult for a lalafell to perform, and finds the moniker fitting.
