History

Born in her own little shabby palace in the remote reaches of the Black Shroud to a hermit woman, Olive began life in seclusion. She was named for her rich green eyes and given an assumed surname based on their living deep in the forest. Her mother was an amateur, unregistered conjurer who practiced her magick in their home deep in the Shroud. Left undisturbed by the Elementals, she took it as tacit sanction of her studies. She only ventured into the city to obtain supplies that she could not craft or gather herself.

It was during one such foray that Olive was conceived. As best as her mother could recall, her father was a travelling merchant from whom she had bought a rare herb found only on Vylbrand. The only other detail she knew was that he was a Midlander, same as them, with the same deep green eyes that Olive was named for.

From the day she learned to walk, she began helping her mother gather food for cooking, branches for repairs, herbs for potions and seasoning, and any other odds and ends readily available around their shack. What began as a means of helping her mother grew into an obsession and eventually a dedication. She took in every bit of knowledge she could about the plants and animals of the Shroud, even breaking their cherished seclusion and going into Gridania to procure books to further her research. After teaching herself the common tongue with the help of her mother, she became a budding expert in the flora of the Shroud by her twelfth summer.

Around the same time, she began showing aptitude for the same magic that her mother practiced and her training in conjury began in earnest. At first she was more interested in learning about her plants and cultivating the small garden of non-native plants that she had created with seeds bought in the city, but her interest in conjury grew as she realized it could only help her understanding of the plants she worked with and the forest in which they lived. By the time that she was an adult, she had already come into her own as not only an autodidact of a botanist but also as an equally amateurish conjurer.

As she grew older and older, her mother grew sicker and sicker. Though she successfully staved off the illness for several years with her knowledge of healing both magical and mundane, no amount of medicine could reverse her mother’s condition. It was in the end an issue with her lungs that caused the weakened state that would eventually allow a simple flu-like illness to kill her. Bereft of most of her world fter her mother’s passing, Olive gathered up what she could carry and set out for the city to join larger society. Plying her trade as a healer and eventually becoming an officially registered conjurer, she carved out a simple living for herself in Gridania, even while keeping her distance from most others.

However, as her skills progressed, her need for rarer and rarer ingredients outpaced her ability to purchase them and so she was forced to journey out of the Shroud for the first time in her life. What she saw – the vastness of the treeless sky – shocked her. That day she became an adventurer in practice if not officially. Though she kept her residence in Gridania, she began to wander outside of the Shroud more and more seeking not only materials and ingredients but also new and wondrous sights.

A healer she had grown up, and a healer she remains to this day. Although she will always be most comfortable with conjury, she has managed to undertake training in the basics of both arcanima and astromancy as well as continuing her study of mundane healing – namely alchemy and traditional medicines.
