While trudging through the darker moments of her life, '''Lsael Elswer''' often looked to the sky. Envying the birds and airship pilots that sense of 'freedom' flying through the skies. So when Lsael found the money and the opportunity presented itself, she took her life savings to a buy a brand new Manacutter to fly it wherever she desires. A self-taught mechanic, wandering explorer, and skilled pilot. She cast aside her sword, shield, and other pointy business tools to seek a life in the skies.

: After assisting some adventurers with a Necrologos leve in hopes of attaining the book for herself. Lsael found herself a treasure coffer with an Atrophied Atomos within. Consuming her satchel of crystals at the time, the creature stuck with the Xaela ever since. Gobbling up whatever she would offer it whether it be scrap metal, food, or just general trash. In exchange as a floating trashcan, the Xaela finally got some much needed company for her long travels.

: Due to the circumstances of her arrival to Eorzea, Lsael doesn't actually know where her birth place or home country is. This was hinted to her though when a large score of Doman refugees began moving into Mor Dhona. Many of which approached the clueless Xaela in their native tongue, asking for directions. It seems like only those who hail from Othard can recognize enough of her appearance to assume she was a fellow countryman. While Lsael had taken the strangers' assumptions to heart, it still remains a mystery to her as to where exactly she was from.

: Her manacutter is actually quite large for it's type. Roughly 60% larger. This is due to two reason one of which being it's high altitude cruising and faster speed. Which both recognizes the need for larger equipment and therefore a larger hull. And two, the partial implementation of an auto-functioning and heavily modified magitek vanguard mounted around the cockpit. Linking this to her aetherotransformer; if caught in a freefall this would allow her manacutter to divert from it's cruising path to dive alongside her to rescue, eliminating the need for any type of parachute. This also allows her to put the manacutter in a hand's free auto-pilot, allowing her the time to sit back and relax, or do some mid-flight repairs.

Without social interaction, Lsael is very much the silent type. Thanks to her isolationist living style courtesy of the past few years, she could go for days before actually speaking. But even then, those who catch wind of her find it difficult to describe her as brooding or gloomy nowadays.

Lsael seems to show little care about the world and politics unless it directly relates to herself or her safety. Despite this she remains oddly well mannered to strangers given that they show her equal respect.
 +
On the topic of respect, she absolutely HATES those who think they are above others. Racists, High-born, politicians and stuck up rich merchants alike. Having grown up with struggles, Lsael could easily relate to those less fortunate. Even often giving away what little she could afford to mewling children and beggars alike. Garleans are also on her "disliked people" list but for the most part only takes that up to the fanatics. If given the proper respect or shows no sign of taking conflict with her, Lsael could care less if they were a spy and such.

Her main deterrent in an argument though remains unchanged throughout the years as hyper-aggressiveness seems to work for her 99% of the time. If an Elezen continues to harass her after being asked to leave twice, she WILL NOT hesitate to put a bullet into their thigh.

On a separate note, she's on a low alert criminal list in Gridania for this very reason, which is why she never frequents the city proper.
Absolutely despises racists, only dislikes 'fanatical' Garleans, and hates anyone that would take advantage of the less fortunate. (basically Monetarists, Gridanians and high-class Ishgard)

What little friends she has, would describe her as a blunt and straight-forward individual. Though at some moments crass or politically incorrect. She does not shy from the truth of the conversation, often stating her opinion regardless of people's reaction or consequence.

<spoiler>The farthest back Lsael's memory could take her was in that container, aboard a Garlean military ship. She, along with the four-score dozen other children, taken from several corners from the empire. Their overseers supposedly bred them and began training their young minds to slip into Eorzea's states as sleeper spies. Making the mistake by labelling them as "special cargo", this caught the attention of one specific privateer crew. Caught in the ensuing battle, Lsael's container caught several stray shots in the first volley. Shredding and tearing holes into their exposed container, the young Xaela crawled out of the torn holes gasping for air, having survived the massacre of shrapnel and metal from within.

Her first act upon freedom? A frenzied assault on the nearest garlean soldier. Caught off guard from the boarding pirates, the man struggled to get the little girl off. The pirates were bewildered, watching this little girl, from a race they've never encountered before, scratching and stabbing her way to freedom.

<spoiler>Having given his own son such an undesirable upbringing, the captain of pirates and Lsael's rescuer, had decided to adopt the young Xaela. As a sort of second chance with a child that he never really got. Leaving the care of his crew to his second-in-command and son, he took his share of the plunder and moved out to retirement. Bought a small cozy cottage by the cliffside near the Red Rooster Stead, the young Xaela followed the aging Roegadyn with much anxiety It wasn't soon after that she began to warm up to the old man. He taught her how to read, write. He fed and clothed her. At nights when the young girl couldn't sleep, he would oft sharing his tales of daring-do and myths. Pirates, rogues and scoundrels of old. And with each story the Xaela was smitten by the prospect of adventure and open seas. Though it was far from his intentions, Lsael pestered him to teaching her how use a sword, or a dagger in her case. Which the roegadyn happily obliged, despite his age showing off the skills that he had learned from years of privateering. While some of the old pirate's habits did not completely die out from retirement such as drinking, swearing, and fighting. The young Xaela emulated and idolized her father, much to the amusement of her visiting stepbrother. She loved to copy the two men, even taking a small sips of their ale and liquor, at the joking request of her step-brother.

For a time, Lsael's life was in complete bliss. That is until a bitter and violent rival, a seperate pirate group, sought revenge on the aging Sea Wolf for past dues. Having thought the matter was settled years ago, the old man was oblivious to the impending attack. Barging into his home, beating and subjecting him into agonizing pain. Lsael could only cry in fear and plead, as these men maimed and humiliated her father. When he tried to fight back, they retaliated by taking advantage of the young Xaela, and threatened to kill Lsael if the Roegadyn struggled.
 +
By the time the Yellowjackets had arrived to help, they found blood smeared across the wooden floor, dragged out of the home. The old man's body was later recovered at the botton of the cliffside. Young Elswer, not even 10 summers old, was nowhere to be found.

<spoiler>Lsael couldn't be asked to recall much of her younger teenage life. Mourning the death of her father, she was practically sold to slavery in the pleasure barges for a premium. A Xaela Au Ra wasn't exactly a commodity back then either. Abused, mistreated, and taken advantage of. It wasn't before long until the girl had given up hope and embraced the sad fate which awaited her.
+
<spoiler>Lsael couldn't be asked to recall much of her life after that. Mourning the death of her father and reeling from her assault, she went into a deep shock. Caring little of what would happen to her from then on, and since Au Ra were a rarity , they quickly put the young girl to work. Her captors putting her into work among the several pleasure barges they privately owned.
 +
Abused, mistreated, raped, and held captive. The girl tried many a time to escape from her fate. One of which she managed! But the busy streets of Hawker's Alley was no place for a young girl like her self. Being Au Ra did not help either as she stood out from the crowd, heightening her chance of recapture. But due to the neatly arraigned raiments that were provided to her. Lsael managed to find solace in among many of the arcanium libraries that dotted the city. The doormen mistaking her for a schoolgirl or some rich-merchants daughter, despite being just another homeless youth. She lived like this for a month, lurking away from sight and stealing what little food she could in order to feed herself. Then come nightfall, finding solace between the library's towering shelves. With only the books around her to keep her company.
 +
Though one day, during her daily food runs and pick-pocketing the stalls. She was caught by one of the bus boys, a fledgling member of the rogue's guild. News spread of her captor throughout the ear's of limsa's underground. Though it wasn't the boy's intention, simply trying to do right by the stall owner, Lsael soon found herself in the hands of her captors once more.

It wasn't until a few years later that another fight broke out, with yet another pirate group out for revenge. This time however, she recognizes the man as her father's biological son. Now leading the former rival group, he had bolstered his crew's numbers to a staggering amount compared to before. Coming to take revenge in the murder of his father, he sought to take matters into his own hands and see to their destruction directly.
+
While the news wasn't that fairly big of a deal, though slow, it made it's way into people's ears. Rumors of a new girl that worked the pleasure houses, hailing from a race in which is not common around Limsa. Throughout the multiple descriptions, there was often one that was consistent. Her blindness, and the lack of color in her right eye. Though the rumour was passed at a snail's pace, after three long years it finally made it's way to the ears of the right man.
Lsael's whaletooth pendant, the last keepsake from her father, was an artifact her stepbrother quickly recognized, and decided to rescue his sister during the process.</spoiler>

Not even half a day upon hearing it another fight brakes out in the lowest deck of the city, with yet another pirate group out for revenge. This time however, it was a brawl between pirate crews which creeped it's way towards the red light district. When the room to her door was broken down, and the man ontop of her shaken away, did Lsael look up to her second set of rescuers. First came the guilt and confusion, then the tears of joy as her stepbrother plucked her up from the bed and led the girl away.

Now leading her father's previous crew, he had bolstered his men's numbers to a staggering amount and came to take revenge for the murder of his father. With little else to go, and the insistence of a handful of the crew. They took in the young lady as one of their own crew, even taking the steps to help her recover from her ordeal. </spoiler>

<spoiler>If there was something that the father and son shared, it was their charisma. Breaking the chain of abuse and mistreatment, it was under her stepbrother's guidance (who did so mainly out of respect for his father) which restored the flame in the young Xaela's heart. She felt young again, and as feisty as ever before. Quickly becoming something of a mascot and little-sister figure to the rest of the crew. Whilst not strong enough to wield and axe or shield yet, she was a trained rogue and marksman. Capable of scurrying the crow's nest faster than anyone else on the ship. Come victory or loss, she felt that same level of camaraderie she had been missing for so many years. Cherishing the crew as her new family. The crew's successes would earn them the attention of the Admiral, and their crew formally commissioned under the Maelstrom command. What cause for celebration, with their newfound recognition and loot gathered from over the years! Even their first assignment seemed such a simple task as well. Whilst most of the Maelstrom were diverted to some 'large scale front', they were tasked to safeguard Pharos Sirius, an important lighthouse off the coast of Wineport...

<spoiler>If there was something that the father and son shared, it was their charisma. Breaking the chain of abuse and mistreatment was no easy task. Though it took half a year, it was under her stepbrother's guidance along with the welcoming members of his new subordinates which restored the flame in the young Xaela's heart.

She felt so safe among their company, her fiery spirit returned as she adopted quickly to life sailing the seas. Quickly becoming something of a mascot and little-sister figure to the rest of the crew, they taught her how to fight. With axe and lance, shortsword and buckler, she trained rogue and marksman. Hoping that what little assistance she could provide would benefit the crew overall.

Come victory or loss, it had been so long since she felt that same sense of camaraderie and family she had been missing since her father's death. Cherishing the crew and her newfound life. It seemed like this way of life would never end.

Her crew's successes would even earn them the attention of the Admiral, and their ship was formally commissioned under Maelstrom command.

What cause for celebration, with their newfound recognition and loot gathered from over the years. While raiding garlean supply lines had it's share of excitement, steady pay was a rarity in thier line of work. To earn gold while doing piss all? A chance they gladly took. Even their first assignment seemed such a simple task as well, guard duty in an island just off of Wineport. Whilst news of war spread along the land, most of the Maelstrom were diverted to a 'large scale front'. Meanwhile their crew, under the acting command of Captain Symond, were tasked to safeguard one of the area's important structures. The newly built lighthouse Pharos Sirius, which sat at the Isles of Umbra.

While for some unknown reason, coming into contact to the corrupted aether restored the sight into her right eye. It changed the hue of her iris from red to a bright yellow, making her heterochromic.

When the shard hit along with the barrage of terraflares, the insides of the buildings were practically engulfed in flames and molten rock. If it wasn't for her and some members of the crew taking a break outside, they surely would have perished along with the others, who stood guard along the inner halls.
But that was pretty much the only good to come out of teh tragedy. With her brother among the dead, what little remaining survivors of the crew scattered like ash in the wind. The Xaela entered a deep slump, having been left to her own devices with no reason to live.
+
The shockwave the of terraflares flung the Xaela and the other Maelstrom some 10 fulms back. The agonizing screams of those burning alive within Pharos Sirius' walls echoed inside Lsael's head. As the other members of her crew had to pin the girl down to prevent her from running into the inferno.
Lsael sold herself to highest bidder with no discretion. Either for her sword arm, her body or both. Her shameless way of living eventually brought her to Ul'dah. After a disagreement with a client and shaming him in broad daylight, several hired men attempted to get rid of her once and for all.
+
With the heat radiating so intensely, ears deafly ringing and with her own burns and bruises suffered from the blast. She could only watch, ignoring the searing pain that embedded itself within her wounded eye. For some reason, the close contact near the newly formed corrupted aether restored the sight into her right eye, changing the hue of her iris from red to a bright yellow. Lsael lost conciousness not long after that, and awakened to the soft beckon of what seemed to be... a woman? Her whispers beckoned Lsael to feel, hear, and think. But before she could even question the vague concept she woke up, still lying in the sand with the smoldering blaze of the lighthouse.
The following fight attracted the attention of a wandering gladiator by the name of Aldis, which lead to a series of events leading up to her admission into the gladiator's guild. </spoiler>
+
The rest of the surviving Maelstrom scattered like the ashes that littered in the sky.

With no clear goal and yet again nowhere else to go. Lsael sold herself to highest bidder with no discretion. For coin one could have her sword arm, or her body, even both at the right price. Her shameless way of living eventually brought her to Ul'dah, following the coin where she could given the food filled her stomach and there was a roof over her head. </spoiler>
<spoiler>The earliest accounts of Lsael's feats echo'ed from the gladiators guild. Finding success as a hired caravan guard for travelling merchants. Her feats and dungeon crawling led her to the guild leader's acquaintance within the sultansworn.

While her time as a gladiator gave her a purpose, Lsael still felt lost and unsure of the future. Often walking with her head cast, never socializing with her merchant clients or her fellow guildmates.

It wasn't until she met Solkzagyl and Jenylns did she shine in her eyes slowly came back. With the trials and lessons she conquered over time, had she found a reason to live for herself. A true purpose.

Sure it might be a fairy tale compared to what she had seen so far in life, but Lsael would never forget that faithful day in Coerthas Central Highlands. The day she recognized HERSELF as a free paladin.

With that fiery spirit restored in her hearts, she would go and master a multitude of combative crafts over the few years. A quick learner, and even quicker on her feet. She found herself chasing leves after leves, priding herself of her work, and eventually finding a part time job as a guard for the Scions. It was around this time her 'Echo' began to develop. But seeing as the primal gods had nothing to do with her, she often ignored the beast tribe threats at hand.

<spoiler>One of her latest clients, who happened to pay her for both sword and body mind you, had a lenghty disagreement with the Xaela. Leaving his service along with her unearned money, this attracted the ire of the monetarist and their hired gangs. A fight broke out and threatened to outnumber the girl 12 to 1. It was during that following fight that attracted the attention of a wandering gladiator by the name of Aldis. And by way of several coincidences and accidents, lead to her admission into the gladiator's guild.
 +

 +
She didn't think much of her admission at first.
 +
The sword and shield was a simple enough weapon to utilize. Finding job requests as a hired caravan guard was boring beyond measure, but payed well enough. But she always seemed to lack a goal, Lsael often had little to look forward to. While her feats in battle and dungeon crawling began to gain momentum, the guild leader Mylla decided to take an interest into the matter, and led Lsael to her acquaintance among within the sultansworn.

 +
Knights in shining armor, she recognized the status of the men in the old stories she was told as a child. Though while still downhearted, she followed the whims of the man that instructed her in the way of the sword and shield. It wasn't until she met Solkzagyl and Jenylns did she shine in her eyes slowly came back. The trials and lessons, the victory and betrayals over those they thought could be trusted. It seemed all but like a fantasy at first, but slowly Lsael began to take these men's words by heart. And upon her final battle against the monetarist forces, she gazed down on her soulstone with a new sense of direction. From then on, she would hold her head up and walk her own path. Like a rough ingot, the years of pain and struggles only served to temper and mold her into something more. And now her sword and conviction was sharper than ever.

How does one spend their "happy ending?"

While trudging through the darker moments of her life, Lsael Elswer often looked to the sky. Lsael discreetly put aside her sword, shield, and other pointy business tools to seek a life in the skies.

Basic Info

A quick reader, but horrible writer. Most often opting to doodle instead. Oddly enough, she's actually quite good at sketching and drawing.
Instead of keeping a diary, she tends to collect books as keepsakes for special events or jobs. Opting high quality tomes as payment for her services in the past. Whilst wandering the streets away from her captors as a child, she often found respite in the arcanist libraries which dotted the city. Being around books made her feel safe, which is probably why there is an overabundance of them in her apartment.
After assisting some adventurers with a Necrologos leve in hopes of attaining the book for herself. She gives it many names like "Cheeky Lil' Bastard" but "Tomo" is what she's taken to calling it. Lsael also tends to keep it under a strict leash, as the atomos tends to bite when spoiled with food.
Having been raised around pirates and Roegadyns, she's grown to have a very high tolerance of alcohol. Thus, Lsael is often caught with several hard drinks when visiting taverns or bars.
Due to the circumstances of her arrival to Eorzea, Lsael doesn't actually know where her birth place or home country is.
Her manacutter is actually quite large for it's type.
At the time, she's formally inducted as a First Lieutenant in the Immortal Flames. Yet lives in the Topmast Apartments in Limsa Lominsa.
Lsael has worked as (informally) a private security guard, mercenary/sellsword, courtesan/whore, caravan escort guard, smuggler, pickpocket, barkeep, cartographer, treasure/bounty hunter, and for a week or so- a scullery maid.

Appearance & Personality

Lsael is a young adult Xaela. She is slim, curvacious, yet otherwise maintains a well balanced figure. Lsael stands at 5 fulms 6 ilms, which is noticably taller than other female Au Ra. She has Short black hair with red highlights with red and yellow eyes enclosed in black limbal rings. Occasionally grows out her hair to about chin height in which her bangs cover half her face, but it's proven not much help while flying to opts to cut it short. She was actually blind in her right eye up until she was 19 until the Calamity happened and mysteriously restored her vision. Wears goggles and often wears double layers whilst flying to keep the wind chill from freezing her over.

Without social interaction, Lsael is very much the silent type. Thanks to her isolationist style of living courtesy of the past few years, she could go for days before actually speaking. But even then, those who catch wind of her find it difficult to describe her as brooding or gloomy. More among the lines of apathetic, really. Lsael seems to show little care about the world and politics unless it directly relates to herself or her safety. Despite this she remains oddly well mannered to strangers given that they show her equal respect.

Her main deterrent in an argument though remains unchanged throughout the years as hyper-aggressiveness seems to work for her most of the time. If an Elezen continues to harass her after being asked to leave twice, she WILL NOT hesitate to put a bullet in their thigh. On a separate note, she's on a low alert criminal list in Gridania for this very reason, which is why she never frequents the city proper.

What little friends she has, would describe her as a blunt and straight-forward individual. Though at some moments crass or politically incorrect. She does not shy from the truth of the conversation, often stating her opinion regardless of people's reaction or consequence.

Combat and Ability

While in her younger years she grew up with her father's stories of graceful fighters doing flips and turns. As a grown woman and capable fighter she quickly realized this just wasn't feasible in heavy armor. Rather, throughout her work in Ul'dah, she develops a sort of 'lazy technique' she has figured while watching the mages fight. "Grazing" her opponent's hits through parrying or avoiding blows at a hair's distance. While responding in kind with quick and ruthless succession, often with short skips and long dashes. This proved widely useful especially back in the day she often wore plate armor 24/7. While this technique placed her in some vary dangerous positions. Her scrupulous thinking and quick reactions made sure the risk was often worth the reward, and helped set her apart early on from the rest of the young gladiators.
Even now, she still continues this by force of habit. As a machinist, even when given the advantage of ranged attacks she much rather prefers close quarters combat. Even more riskier, if not for assistance of the wide variety of tools under a machinist's disposal all given times.

Abilities

Echo - Attaining this ability during the Calamity. She received it during her close brush with death in Pharos Sirius. While it restored her eyesight on her right eye and changed it's color to a yellow similar to corrupted crystals. This ability would remain dormant much throughout her young adult life. Her echo allows her to switch soul crystals in mid-combat, allowing whatever form or stance to temporarily carried over to her new job crystal for a short duration. While this seems incredibly useful, she had only experienced this phenomenon twice in her life. Seemingly activating during times of great stress or when her body fears it is close to death. Another thing she had noticed is while she could choose to change to any class, switching to her Dark Knight soul crystal cancels it completely. And she usually experiences short term memory loss following the DRK switch when she's fallen out of combat.

Weapons of Choice

14mm Revolver - Courtesy of her volunteer work in the Wolves' Den teaching and guiding curious adventurers around the vicinity. This is her favorite firearm, with it's heavy design allows her to use it to parry and block sword strikes against the occasional assailant.
Sword and Shield - Though it has sat gathering dust in the back of her seat on her Manacutter, she tends to carry it with her from time to time. Several years of drilled instructions and fighting has already proved her worth as a gladiator and free paladin. And when when her revolver isn't not up to the task, her sword arm is her guaranteed best bet.
Axe - Also gathering dust is her Axe, though not as often lately. It has seen a bit more frequent use since the opening of Ishgard and the the variety of larger game and monsters now available.
Daggers - Her misericordes are like a memory from a distant dream, where she aimed to be one of the thievish heroes in which her father's stories spoke of. Though she only takes them out during more "stealthier" approaches, Lsael does tend to keep them on her persons most of the time due to ease of concealment.
Spear - A capable lancer and trained in basic dragoon arts. Nowadays however, once could often see as her lance being used as a clothes rack while flying.
CQC - "Why bother spending gil on some crested hora when I can beat them with my spare fists... or shoot them." Granted she's learned a lot in her time training amongst monks and pulgists. Very much useful during drunken brawls.

Miscellaneous/IC notes

Lsael's full name a combination of two slurred instances. Her first name was when she was found by her stepfather, repeating after him when he said the words "Let's sail" whilst dipping in and out of consciousness. Her last name was given to her by her stepfather. Knowing that giving her his own last name would never identify the Xaela as his own flesh and blood. Instead He gave her the name "Elilswerd", meaning (Exiled/Foreign-Sword) A testament on how he first encountered the feisty young lass jumping onto a garlean soldier and stabbing him with his own knife. Due to her tomboyish personality as a child, he figured a male's naming convention fit her perfectly. Though senility and constant drinking over the years took a toll on the old Sea Wolf's speech pattern. And to the young impressionable child took it upon herself to take up the last name "Elswer" When her Echo is activated and Lsael accidentally switches to her Dark Knight soulcrystal. What comes out is actually her Darkside form. Completely changing her personality to that of a deranged bloodthirsty berserker. This is why she often can't remember the final few seconds of her 'Echo' state. Lsael is almost certain she is of doman descent, as hinted by the surge of refugees. Yet she does not identify herself as one, and find the foreigner's habits and traditions to be weird.
