How does one spend their "happy ending?"
While trudging through the darker moments of her life, Lsael Elswer often looked to the sky. Envying the birds and airship pilots that sense of 'freedom' flying through the skies. So when Lsael found the money and the opportunity presented itself, she took her life savings to a buy a brand new Manacutter to fly it wherever she desires. A self-taught mechanic, wandering explorer, and skilled pilot. She cast aside her sword, shield, and other pointy business tools to seek a life in the skies.
Basic Info
- A quick reader, but horrible writer. Most often opting to doodle instead. Oddly enough, she's actually quite good at sketching and drawing.
- Instead of keeping a diary, she tends to collect books as keepsakes for special events or jobs. Opting high quality tomes as payment for her services in the past.
- Whilst wandering the streets away from her benefactors as a teenager, she often found respite in the arcanist libraries which dotted the city. Being around books made her feel safe, which is probably why there is an overabundance of them in her apartment.
- After assisting some adventurers with a Necrologos leve in hopes of attaining the book for herself. Lsael found herself a treasure coffer with an Atrophied Atomos within. Consuming her satchel of crystals at the time, the creature stuck with the Xaela ever since. Gobbling up whatever she would offer it whether it be scrap metal, food, or just general trash. In exchange as a floating trashcan, the Xaela finally got some much needed company for her long travels.
- It's name is "Tomo" and she keeps it under a strict leash, as he tends to bite when spoiled with food.
Appearance & Personality
Lsael is a young adult Xaela. She is slim, curvacious, yet otherwise maintains a well balanced figure. Lsael stands at 5 fulms 6 ilms, which is noticably taller than other female Au Ra.
She has Short black hair with red highlights with red and yellow eyes enclosed in black limbal rings. Occasionally grows out her hair to about chin height in which her bangs cover half her face, but it's proven not much help while flying to opts to cut it short.
She was actually blind in her right eye up until she was 19 until the Calamity happened and mysteriously restored her vision. Wears goggles and often wears double layers whilst flying to keep the wind chill from freezing her over.
Without social interaction, Lsael is very much the silent type. Thanks to her isolationist living style courtesy of the past few years, she could go for days before actually speaking. But even then, those who catch wind of her find it difficult to describe her as brooding or gloomy nowadays.
She carries herself with little care about the world unless it directly relates to herself or her safety.she remains oddly well mannered to strangers given that they show her equal respect.
Her main deterrent in an argument though remains unchanged throughout the years as hyper-aggressiveness seems to work for her 99% of the time. If an Elezen continues to harass her after being asked to leave twice, she WILL NOT hesitate to put a bullet into their thigh.
On a separate note, she's on a low alert list in Gridania, which is why she never frequents the city proper.
Absolutely despises racists, only dislikes 'fanatical' Garleans, and hates anyone that would take advantage of the less fortunate. (basically Monetarists, Gridanians and high-class Ishgard)
What little friends she has, would describe her as a blunt and straight-forward individual. Though at some moments crass or politically incorrect. She does not shy from the truth of the conversation, often stating her opinion regardless of people's reaction or consequence.

Biography
Earliest Memory
Show text
The farthest back Lsael's memory could take her was in that container, aboard a Garlean military ship. She, along with the four-score dozen other children, taken from several corners from the empire. Their overseers supposedly bred them and began training their young minds to slip into Eorzea's states as sleeper spies. Making the mistake by labelling them as "special cargo", this caught the attention of one specific privateer crew. Caught in the ensuing battle, Lsael's container caught several stray shots in the first volley. Shredding and tearing holes into their exposed container, the young Xaela crawled out of the torn holes gasping for air, having survived the massacre of shrapnel and metal from within.
Her first act upon freedom? A frenzied assault on the nearest garlean soldier. Caught off guard from the boarding pirates, the man struggled to get the little girl off. The pirates were bewildered, watching this little girl, from a race they've never encountered before, scratching and stabbing her way to freedom.
Finishing off the soldier who managed to throw Lsael off, the pirates picked up the young girl along with three other surviving children to find the remnants of the "special container". Whilst the crew celebrated with the other loot to be had. Their captain, shocked at the mangled corpses inside the containers, took it upon himself to see to the one-eyed child who was slipping in and out of consciousness. "Let's sail elswhere. I've had enough of this place." Were the first words Lsael's ears heard after the ringing in her head had ceased. Repeating after him, she could only whisper a few slurred words. This was how the pirate assumed her name as "Lsael"
Early Childhood
Show text
Having given his own son such an undesirable upbringing. Lsael's newfound caregiver to adopt the young Xaela, as a sort of second chance in life. He taught her how to read, write, fed and clothed her. Sharing his tales of daring-do and myths and even teaching her how to properly use a sword, dagger and firearm. While some of the old pirate's habits did not completely die out from retirement such as drinking, swearing, and fighting. The young Xaela emulated and idolized her father, often asking him to teach her to be a pirate. For a time, Lsael's life was in complete bliss. That is until a bitter and violent rival pirate group sought revenge on the Sea Wolf for past dues. Attacking him in his home, beating and maiming him in-front of his daughter before ultimately executing him. The young Xaela went into a deep shock, as she was taken advantage of and made to work in the back-alley pleasure barges in which the group controlled.
Young Teenager
Show text
Lsael couldn't be asked to recall much of her younger teenage life. Mourning the death of her father, she was practically sold to slavery in the pleasure barges for a premium. A Xaela Au Ra wasn't exactly a commodity back then either. Abused, mistreated, and taken advantage of. It wasn't before long until the girl had given up hope and embraced the sad fate which awaited her.
It wasn't until a few years later that another fight broke out, with yet another pirate group out for revenge. This time however, she recognizes the man as her father's biological son. Now leading the former rival group, he had bolstered his crew's numbers to a staggering amount compared to before. Coming to take revenge in the murder of his father, he sought to take matters into his own hands and see to their destruction directly.
Lsael's whaletooth pendant, the last keepsake from her father, was an artifact her stepbrother quickly recognized, and decided to rescue his sister during the process.
Late Teens into Early Adulthood

If there was something that the father and son shared, it was their charisma. Breaking the chain of abuse and mistreatment, it was under her stepbrother's guidance (who did so mainly out of respect for his father) which restored the flame in the young Xaela's heart. She felt young again, and as feisty as ever before. Quickly becoming something of a mascot and little-sister figure to the rest of the crew. Whilst not strong enough to wield and axe or shield yet, she was a trained rogue and marksman. Capable of scurrying the crow's nest faster than anyone else on the ship. Come victory or loss, she felt that same level of camaraderie she had been missing for so many years. Cherishing the crew as her new family. The crew's successes would earn them the attention of the Admiral, and their crew formally commissioned under the Maelstrom command. What cause for celebration, with their newfound recognition and loot gathered from over the years! Even their first assignment seemed such a simple task as well. Whilst most of the Maelstrom were diverted to some 'large scale front', they were tasked to safeguard Pharos Sirius, an important lighthouse off the coast of Wineport...
...To have the Calamity take away so much from her.
While for some unknown reason, coming into contact to the corrupted aether restored the sight into her right eye. It changed the hue of her iris from red to a bright yellow, making her heterochromic.
But that was pretty much the only good to come out of teh tragedy. With her brother among the dead, what little remaining survivors of the crew scattered like ash in the wind. The Xaela entered a deep slump, having been left to her own devices with no reason to live.
Lsael sold herself to highest bidder with no discretion. Either for her sword arm, her body or both. Her shameless way of living eventually brought her to Ul'dah. After a disagreement with a client and shaming him in broad daylight, several hired men attempted to get rid of her once and for all.
The following fight attracted the attention of a wandering gladiator by the name of Aldis, which lead to a series of events leading up to her admission into the gladiator's guild.

The earliest accounts of Lsael's feats echo'ed from the gladiators guild. Finding success as a hired caravan guard for travelling merchants. Her feats and dungeon crawling led her to the guild leader's acquaintance within the sultansworn.
While her time as a gladiator gave her a purpose, Lsael still felt lost and unsure of the future. Often walking with her head cast, never socializing with her merchant clients or her fellow guildmates.
It wasn't until she met Solkzagyl and Jenylns did she shine in her eyes slowly came back. With the trials and lessons she conquered over time, had she found a reason to live for herself. A true purpose.
Sure it might be a fairy tale compared to what she had seen so far in life, but Lsael would never forget that faithful day in Coerthas Central Highlands. The day she recognized HERSELF as a free paladin.
With that fiery spirit restored in her hearts, she would go and master a multitude of combative crafts over the few years. A quick learner, and even quicker on her feet. She found herself chasing leves after leves, priding herself of her work, and eventually finding a part time job as a guard for the Scions. It was around this time her 'Echo' began to develop. But seeing as the primal gods had nothing to do with her, she often ignored the beast tribe threats at hand.
Despite all this, she still remained very much alone. Spending vast amounts of time out in the world with little companion but the sun and the stars.
AFter the repetitive nature of her sellsword and mercenary work started to get to her. She felt a lull in heart, chasing what seemed to be and endless path of ventures she could not escape.
It was around this time she had rekindled her childhood fascination with airships. Envying those free to travel to faraway lands to wherever they may please. Airship journeys were always exciting for Lsael, having only been on two rides up until this point in her life. With the desire to seek adventure through her own means, and the recent opening of Ishgard. The Xaela seized the chance and bought her own Manacutter, and took on the skies as if she was coming back home.
Combat and Ability
- While in her younger years she grew up with her father's stories of graceful fighters doing flips and turns. As a grown woman and capable fighter she quickly realized this just wasn't feasible in heavy armor. Rather, throughout her work in Ul'dah, she develops a sort of 'lazy technique' she has figured while watching the mages fight. "Grazing" her opponent's hits through parrying or avoiding blows at a hair's distance. While responding in kind with quick and ruthless succession, often with short skips and long dashes.
While this technique of her's places her in some vary dangerous positions. Her scrupulous thinking and quick reactions made sure the risk was often worth the reward, and especially useful against melee-based opponents.
Abilities
- Echo - Attaining this ability during the Calamity. She received it during her close brush with death in Pharos Sirius. While it restored her eyesight on her right eye and changed it's color to a yellow similar to corrupted crystals. This ability would remain dormant much throughout her young adult life. Her echo allows her to switch soul crystals in mid-combat, allowing whatever form or stance to temporarily carried over to her new job crystal for a short duration. While this seems incredibly useful, she had only experienced this phenomenon twice in her life. Seemingly activating during times of great stress or when her body fears it is close to death. Another thing she had noticed is while she could choose to change to any class, switching to her Dark Knight soul crystal cancels it completely. And she usually experiences short term memory loss following the DRK switch when she's fallen out of combat.

Weapons of Choice
- A 14mm - 6 chamber Revolver - Courtesy of her volunteer work in the Wolves' Den teaching and guiding curious adventurers around the vicinity. Her favorite firearm, it's heavy design allows her to use it to parry and block sword strikes against the occasional assailant. Her go-to weapon.
- Sword and Shield - Though she has it gathering dust in the back of her seat on her Manacutter, she tends to carry it with her from time to time as several years of drilled instructions and fighting has already proved her worth as a gladiator and free paladin. Usually when her revolver fails to do the job, her sword arm is her guaranteed next bet.
- Axe - Also gathering dust is her Axe skills, though seen a bit more frequent use due to the variety of larger game in her travels throughout Abalathia
- Daggers - Her misericordes are a reminder from a distant dream, where she aimed to be one of the heroes in which her father's stories spoke of. Though she only takes them out during more "stealthier" approaches, she DOES tend to keep them on her persons due to ease of concealment.
- Spear - A capable lancer, but nowadays used as her lance as a clothes dryer while flying
- CQC - "Why bother spending gil on some crested hora when I can beat them with my spare fists... or shoot them."

Miscellaneous
Lsael's full name a combination of two slurred instances.
Her first name was when she was found by her stepfather, repeating after him when he said the words "Let's sail" whilst dipping in and out of consciousness.
Her last name was given to her by her stepfather. Knowing that giving her his own last name would never identify the Xaela as his own flesh and blood.
Instead He gave her the name "Elilswerd", meaning (Exiled/Foreign-Sword) A testament on how he first encountered the feisty young lass jumping onto a garlean soldier and stabbing him with his own knife.
Due to her tomboyish personality as a child, he figured a male's naming convention fit her perfectly. Though senility and constant drinking over the years took a toll on the old Sea Wolf's speech pattern. And to the young impressionable child took it upon herself to take up the last name "Elswer"
When her Echo is activated and Lsael accidentally switches to her Dark Knight soulcrystal. What comes out is actually her Darkside form. Completely changing her personality to that of a deranged bloodthirsty berserker. This is also why she can't remember the final few seconds of ever entering her 'Echo' state.
