Amaryliss Lackland is a Sharlayan citizen and career academic. Her greatest scientific contributions have been in the fields of phantom creation and aetherochemsitry, two of the founding pillars for creating familiars.

Beyond Sharlayan territories, she's best known to the general public as a socialite.

Appearance

Ryliss is a tall, svelte Viera with the dark, rich brown skin of the Rava clan. Her features are delicate, unmarked by the imperfections that plague many adventurers; evidence that she clings to the back line, a fair distance away from any real fighting. Her long hair is a river of rose pink, complimented by leporine ears of the same hue.

She carries herself proudly, walking with confidence; shoulders back and a flawless stride even in staggeringly high heels. The former are something of a staple, usually worn in tandem with a long jacket and a short skirt.

Personality

Ryliss is an outgoing individual with a leaning towards charm and optimism. She doesn't take herself or anything else very seriously and frequently joke-lies her way out having to answer personal questions.

Sociable as she is, Ryliss has an aversion to close intra-personal relationships. The trait isn't due to any problems with commitment but rather a profound fear of outliving those that she holds most dear and being hurt in the process.

Her hobbies and interests are mostly rooted in the practical and academic, including but not limited to: reading and forgetting to eat, drink or sleep while doing so, attending educational speeches and classes, archeology, astronomy, experimenting in the arcane and attending social events. For her, adventuring is more a hobby than a profession, as her primary source of income are teaching and fulfilling commissions.

Background

As time passed and memory eroded, Amaryliss' exact origins have been lost to time. Sharlayan's records cite only her accomplishments, dates of enrollment in various different Studium programs and significant academic publishings. The best estimate of her age is in the triple digits, a number put forth by some of her elderly colleagues in the Isle of Val.

Her enrollment in the Studium is nothing short of orthodox: Ryliss has studied since youth, and intends to do so until the day she dies. Though she lacked particular talent or motivation to pass some of the programs that she enrolled in, she came into her own with one ancient discipline: aetherochemistry. It's during one of her routine lectures on the summoning magic used by the ancient Allagans that she performed a feat of aetherochemistry both fascinating and grotesque that earned her her Archon tattoo in the year 1551. The event and the monstrous chimera attracted enough attention that she sought out an entirely different discipline in order to avoid excessive scrutiny from her peers, relegating herself to the studies of conjury and arcanima.

When the pressure regarding her experiments didn't relent after a few years, she traveled to Eorzea, joining the Sons of Saint Coinach shortly thereafter as a consultant.

At Saint Coinach's Find, Ryliss spent her time unearthing the secrets of the Allagan Empire and puzzling together greater understanding of the summoning magic that they used. When the first Summoner Soul Crystals were uncovered, she was passed over in favor of adventurers who could put them to good use and report their findings back. Wanting to observe the development of one of these newly minted Summoners (but mostly just jealous), Ryliss left Mor Dhana and began to travel in the adventurer's wake.

For nearly a decade, Aufent and Ryliss traveled the world, teaming up with others as they went. Where needed, she plied her skills in the arcane through offensive or curative magics. But mostly, the pair bonded and conversed. He relayed instinctive knowledge that he'd picked up from the Soul Crystal, and she recoinciled it with previous knowledge. Together, they sent a book's worth of notes back to Sharlayan.

As Dalamud continued its descent and twilight dawned on the Sixth Astral Era, Ryliss took to the field in disguise alongside of countless other brave souls. The conflict and chaos culminated in Mor Dhana at Carteneau Flats, where thousands laid down their lives. Though the day the sort of chaos that one shouldn't soon forget, the events are ill remembered. A soaring phoenix, a raging fire and terrible clamor are all that stand out.

Aufent made it out alive but his career as an adventurer was compromised by the injuries he'd sustained in combat. Knowing that his life was near its end, she lead him back to her homeland where they stayed until his death at the tail end of the Dragonsong War. That his death coincided all too well with the events taking place in Ishgard at the time made Ryliss delve into the realm of the pseudoscientific study of astronomy.

Grief-stricken, she remained in Sharlayan for months, trying desperately to distract herself from the loss of the one she'd held most dear. The world's events passed her by until she couldn't ignore the call to follow in Aufent's footsteps. Amaryliss took up her old partner's Soul Crystal and traveled back to the mainland.

There she's been ever since, still trying desperately to distract herself.
