P E R S O N A L I T Y

Samilen is, generally speaking, a very soft-spoken and quiet man. He rarely likes to put himself into the personal business of others and very much loathes finding himself in any sort of conflict--physical, emotional or otherwise. He tends to keep to himself on principle, but rarely turns down the opportunity to meet new people when confronted with the option, even though he never makes the first move to instigate companionship of any sort.

Behind his introversion however, Samilen is a man haunted by the ghosts of The Great Calamity. A prior soldier and member of the Twin Adders, Samilen had been very much apart of the Battle of Carteneau and remembers it vividly. Though a competent fighter in his own right, Samilen was nevertheless helpless in watching many his brothers and sisters-in-arms fall on the battlefield; there was very little the young archer, among many others, could do to change the tide of battle.

Seeing so much death, destruction and pain has long left a scar to Samilen's emotional well-being. He avoids conflict on principle, and is genuinely afraid of forging new relationships with people. He doesn't want to watch his loved ones get hurt, and much less wants to be put in a position where he is helpless to keep them safe from harm. He is not so much bitter to caring about other people as he is simply afraid of losing them.

Samilen is selectively mute largely because of these traumas, rarely speaking verbally and preferring instead to communicate in handspeak (sign language). He prefers to be alone most of the time, instead filling his days with meaningful work and new curiosities if only to help him forget the ghosts that plague him.

A P P E A R A N C E

As a Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te, Samilen stands at approximately 5 fulms, 2 ilms and weighs roughly 132 ponz. He has shoulder-length white hair, golden eyes and a dark complexion that is somewhat common to Keepers, with traditional markings adoring his cheeks. He is relatively slim in shape, though with a distinct muscular build in his upper body, primarily in his shoulders and arms.

L I K E S

Botany: Having a distinct love for plants since childhood, Samilen likes to collect fauna of all sorts and to learn as much as he can from it. He is particularly fond of collecting flowers and making them into crowns to wear.
Carpentry: Samilen has always loved to create things, and the material involved never really mattered to him until he discovered the Carpenters' guild in Gridanian as a young teenager. He enjoys being able to make things from the materials he gathers as a botanist, especially if its something that makes another person happy.
Performing Music: Though mute, Samilen's experience as a bard has made him quite fond of music--the way that even the simplest song can set the nerves at-ease. Though he doesn't often play around other people, Samilen is quite fond of the harp or the lyre.

D I S L I K E S

Loud Noises and Crowds: There is simply something about being crowded by other people that Samilen cannot take very easily. He avoids congested city centers for this reason, preferring instead the peace and quiet of Gridania and its surrounding Black Shroud. If no other option is available and he's forced to join crowds or other sources of noise and stimulation, Samilen can and will endure it, but it will drain him immensely if not constantly put him at the edge of a panic attack.
Water (Swimming): Despite being born and raised many of his childhood years in Limsa Lominsa, Samilen somehow never much picked up how to swim very well. He's about as buoyant as a rock, and is genuinely fearful that he'll drown if ever confronted with a large body of water.
Cold Weather: Most Miqo'te hate the cold, and Samilen is certainly no exception to the fact. He abhors chilly environments and makes every effort to avoid them; he would rather endure the overstimulating mess of Limsa Lominsa than have to step one foot into the snowfields of Coerthas.

Q U I R K S

Superstitious: Samilen is extremely superstitious when it comes to the field of botany or the forests around Gridania, so much that it dictates the sorts of tasks he'll take for the botanists' guild on certain days.
Selectively Mute: Except in very specific situations, Samilen only communicates through handspeak (sign language). He carries a notebook around to write in for those who don't understand him.
Number Aversion: He can't explain it all that well, but Samilen severely dislikes certain numbers to include the number four and most multipliers of it (8, 12, 16, etc).
Stimming: When nervous, Samilen likes to self-stim. He tends to comb his fingers through his hair and play with the fur on his tail, though when greatly disturbed it can reach something akin to self harm--he starts pulling at his own hair and fur unless distracted or someone else stops him.
C H I L D H O O D

Samilen is, generally speaking, a very soft-spoken and quiet man. He rarely likes to put himself into the personal business of Samilen Jawantal was born to a small family in Limsa Lominsa and is the eldest child of three. He has two younger sisters, N'mahzi (21) and N'agici (18), and all three were born to father N'obuli Tia (Miqo'te) and mothers Sami (Miqo'te) and Lenphi (Hyur).

Sami and Lenphi were born, grew in and married within the city-state of Gridania, but later moved to Limsa Lominsa in search of prosperous jobs, as both of them were skilled carpenters and Limsa was then with a sore need for their skills in the growing demand for ships.

The two of them met N'obuli, a local fisherman and well-known womanizer at the time. Over the course of several years he managed to win the hearts of both Sami and Lenphi–or at least, that’s in his own recounts of the history. Regardless of the truth behind their story of romance, the two women eventually took to his charms and settled down together within the seaside city-state.

Several months after the three of them married officially, their first son was born: Samilen. He was named after both of his mothers as part of Sami’s values, and quickly proved himself to be quite the handful. Until he was a young teenager, Samilen got into trouble very often around the docks of Limsa: stealing fish, playing pranks, getting into fights with other kids. There seemed to be no end to the chaos he could get himself into (many likened to say that he took after his father, N'obuli).

A D O L E S C E N C E

Several years after N'mahzi was born, Samilen found his calling in archery and botany, two skill sets that were not at all common in Limsa nor its surrounding areas.

Though his parents had reservations about allowing Samilen to take up a skill that may lead him into the growing skirmishes against the Garlean Empire, as many other parents were for their not-yet-adult children, they allowed him to move back to Gridania to learn archery and botany while under the care of extended family.

He took to both skills very quickly and soon became well-known across others of his age for his quickness, dexterity and extraordinary aim with a bow, but also his curiosity and enthusiasm in learning the art botany and later carpentry.

On the eve of his 16th nameday, Samilen joined the ranks of Order of the Twin Adders as an initiate. Though there was much discrimination against Miqo'te, especially Keepers, Samilen did his best to prove his worth both as an archer and a person while under the mentorship of NIjoh'a Jesyho, a man who would help guide the young Jawantal through many a hardship and periods of growth.

He honed skills both physical and emotional, though nothing could have prepared him for what happened on the year of his 20th nameday: The Great Calamity. Samilen was one of many young fighters who were tasked with defending Eorzea from the Garlean Empire on the Carteneau Flats on that fateful day--and one of few who were left alive to speak of the horrors he had encountered.

But speak of them he never did, as Samilen quickly found himself troubled by the emotional turmoil the battle had wrought upon him. The loss of friends and allies, the visions of pain and suffering--the memories follow the man wherever he goes, leaving it difficult for him to build relationships with people or to even speak aloud.

R E C E N T L Y

Though still dealing with the trauma of five years past, Samilen is still very much a productive member of the Gridanian homeland--he can often be found working hard within the botanists' or carpenters' guild. He will occasionally visit his family in Limsa Lominsa, though such visits are sporadic at best, as he doesn't like to be far from the Black Shroud for very long.

Samilen is not currently a member of the Twin Adders--after The Great Calamity, he resigned from the Grand Company with the hope to fill his life with peace and productivity than stress and conflict. Despite this, he still is recognized prominently among the members who knew and fought beside him and is regularly welcomed to train up-and-coming archers when the extra help is needed. Samilen often takes these offers despite his discomfort, if only so that his skills are passed on to the next generation of fighters.

Currently, Samilen is most likely to be found within Gridania or its surrounding forests, often tasked by one of the guilds he is prominently a member of, such as the botanists' or carpenters' guild. He can be sparingly found in Limsa Lominsa on his visits to his family, and even less often roaming the lands of Eorzea when called upon to do so in his capacity as a botanist.
