Overview

Tiffaunie is the reincarnation of Ratatoskr, one of the seven Great Wyrms of the First Brood. She was reborn by Hydaelyn to become Her champion, and created in the form of an Elezen woman in order to allow her to experience life from the perspective of a mortal and bring an end to the Dragonsong War.

Biography

Origins of the Dragonsong War

In the aftermath of Shiva's sacrifice and joining of her soul with the Great Wyrm Hraesvelgr, the elezen of Ishgard and dragons of Dravania settled into an alliance. During this time, as the elezen and dragons (with the "assistance" of a tribe of moogles) erected multiple monuments in the Dravanian Forelands and in the Churning Mists atop Sohm Al, the Great Wyrm Ratatoskr grew progressively intrigued and enamored with her small mortal allies. Having been without a mate for several millennia, she started spending increasingly more and more time amongst the elezen, learning their ways and their history as they, in turn, learned from her. Eventually, after 200 years, she befriended and then fell in love with Haldrath, the only son of the current Ishgardian king. Determined to deepen the bond between dragon and man even further, Ratatoskr came to the decision that she would give up her immortal life and take the form of an elezen woman so that she and Haldrath could be together, thus making man and dragon joined in flesh as well as in spirit.

Unbeknownst to the two lovers, though, an Ascian named Igeyorhm had learned of their romance and saw an opportunity to sow discord. Taking advantage of the elezen king's advancing age and the fear of mortality that often accompanies the march of time, she reminded him that the source of the Great Wyrm's power and immortality lay in their eyes (a secret which Ratatoskr herself had shared with the elezen), and then revealed to him that the friendship between his son and the wyrm had become love. When Haldrath admitted his feelings to his father, the Ascian was able to easily persuade him that Ratatoskr intended to devour his son as her brood brother had devoured Shiva two centuries earlier. Enraged that he was going to lose his son and heir, Thordan eagerly accepted the Ascian's suggestion that the only way he could save Haldrath was by destroying Ratatoskr, and in doing so also take possession of her power and immortality for himself. Gathering twelve of his most loyal knights, he sent word to Ratatoskr that he wanted to meet privately with her, to which the wyrm eagerly agreed.

The meeting was actually an ambush which Ratatoskr, the thought of such a betrayal having never crossed her mind, walked straight into. Taken completely unaware, she fell beneath the knight's lances and swords without even the chance to fight back. Igeyorhm appeared and instructed the elezen to pluck out her eyes, warning them that Ratatoskr's siblings would have felt her death and telling them that their only hope of victory against a fully prepared and vengeful Nidhogg and/or Hraesvelgr would be to use his sister's Eye against him. In order to do this, she bade them to consume one of the eyes, and by doing so gain the ability to actually use the power of the other one. Realizing that they had no other choice (and in some cases eager for the power they believed would soon be theirs), Thordan and his knights obeyed.

Having learned of his father's plans, Haldrath rushed to try and stop him, but arrived too late. Horrified at what they had done, he refused Thordan's demand that he partake of the eye. Their argument was interrupted by the enraged roar of Nidhogg, who swept down upon them with savage fury. Now able to wield the power of Ratatoskr's remaining eye, Thordan and his knights were able to hold their own against the Great Wyrm, and a fearsome battle ensued. Still grief-stricken and outraged at what had been done, Haldrath initially refused to join in the battle, but when Thordan was eventually struck a mortal blow, he begged his son with dying breath to take the intact eye and last piece of its twin and make sure that Nidhogg did not survive to take his revenge out on all of Ishgard.

Realizing that his father was right about what would surely happen if the wyrm prevailed, Haldrath reluctantly agreed and joined in the battle, eventually claiming from Nidhogg both of his eyes. Unable to bring himself to strike the final killing blow against his beloved's brother, he allowed the dying wyrm to flee, believing that he would surely soon perish. No longer believing himself worthy to lead his people in the wake of what his father and then he had done, he left the rule of Ishgard in the hands of the surviving knights and departed, taking the three dragon's eyes with him. Eventually he journeyed to what would come to be called Mor Dhona, and cast Ratatoskr's remaining eye deep into the waters of Silvertear Lake, hoping to thus lay her to rest.

Rebirth

In the year 1562, a thousand years after Haldrath cast the eye into the waters of Silvertear Lake, a Garlean fleet sought to seize control of Mor Dhona and use the region as the Empire's staging ground for their continued assault on Eorzea. Roused from his eons of slumber, Midgardsormr arose from the waters of the lake and engaged the fleet in a battle which would come to be known as the Battle of Silvertear Skies. The explosion of the Agrius' ceruleum tanks amidst the aether-rich waters of the lake devastated the region and laid waste to the small settlement which had arisen on the lake's shore. There were no witnesses therefore to a curious sight afterwards as the waters of the lake took on a soft green glow, which slowly coalesced at its center, not far from where the wreckage of the Agrius lay with the the corpse of the Father of Dragons entwined about it. The manifestation of pale green aether arose from the waters and floated towards the shore, and as it journeyed the sphere began contorting as its form was reshaped by some unseen hand. By the time it had reached the ruins of the village and set down inside the crumbled husk of a building, it no longer appeared to be an orb but instead resembled the shape of a young child.

Across the border between Mor Dhona and Coerthas, a young Elezen trader named Fernand and his wife Renee had fearfully watched the battle from afar along with what few refugees had managed to escape the destruction. In the stillness of the night that followed, the young man awoke to the sound of a soft voice calling to him. Hear...he heard the voice call again, like bells on the breeze. He listened, but heard only unnatural silence. Upon realizing what the absence of sound meant, he roused his mate and their companions, and the small group made haste into Mor Dhona in the hope to rescue any who had survived. Upon reaching the shattered remains of the village, Fernand again heard the soft voice bidding him to Hear...and, allowing that to be his guide, found himself at the entrance of a partially collapsed building at the water's edge. Inside, he discovered a small Elezen child no more than five summers old, clad only in the long, tangled mess of her hair. She looked up at him with fearful, pale green eyes, and the soft voice chimed to him again, this time with a new entreat. Feel...

Without a second thought, Fernand removed his coat and draped it around the little girl, murmuring soothingly to her as she burst into tears. Gathering her into his arms, he made his way back to where the rest of the rescuers had begun gathering with what few still living survivors they had managed to recover. As dawn began brightening the horizon, the truth of how horribly scarred and disfigured the land around them had become was fully revealed, and agreement was reached that they could not safely remain there for much longer. After a final reconnaissance of the ruins yielded no more survivors to be found, they gathered up what they could and returned to Coerthas. None of the survivors whom Fernand questioned about the child could tell him her name or who her kin were, though they all claimed to have some faint recollection of having seen her before. The child herself never spoke a word, but clung to her savior's side. When no others came forward to claim the child as their kin, Fernand and Renee agreed to adopt her as their own, and, giving her the name Tiffaunie, returned with her to their home in the Twelveswood.
