[edit] Details Personality Relationships Roleplaying Hooks Gallery OOC Notes GENERAL INFORMATION Vael'ir Alatori ('Vael' to most) is a magically-inclined mercenary and silver-tongued gambler from the city-state of Ul'dah. He owns Alatori Acquisitions, a small Shirogane-based treasure hunting company that specializes in recovering relics and exploring monster-infested ruins. Vael was raised in Ala Mhigo by a lalafellin family following his abandonment by his destitute birth clan, and subsequently grew up in the city of Ul'dah as a refugee. Though the odds were stacked against him, Vael relentlessly pursued his interests in magic and strategy games, becoming a skilled mercenary and gambler alike. APPEARANCE Strikingly handsome by most accounts, Vael sports distinctive blue skin and an unusual black stripe-shaped birthmark across his heterochromatic eyes. All of this is framed by his black hair that fades to white at the tips, eternally silky and well-maintained. He is quite tall for his species at just over 64 ilms. Vael is a nocturnal desert dweller and is thus accustomed to colder climates; he prefers clothing with fur collars and long sleeves, with a particular preference for things flashy and eye-catching. He is often seen in a diamond-patterned black-and-purple coat worn specifically for long nights at the Gold Saucer. Aspects That Stand Out: ■ Black stripe birthmark across his eyes. ■ Heterochromatic, with a blue right eye and a purple left eye. ■ Dark blue skin, like the sky just after sunset. PERSONALITY Ever passionate, ever driven; Vael dedicates himself wholly to being good at what he does, and never leaves a task that matters to him halfway done. He believes in the beauty of the world and in choosing joy in life in the wake of despair and doubt. Vael believes that a life lived mildly is no life at all. His passionate nature makes him quick to anger when he feels that it is warranted. Vael'ir has a particular distaste for the exploitation of the weak and defenseless, and is a vocal opponent of the Syndicate (and most lawful institutions in general). Though he tries to project a smooth, calm demeanor, Vael can be easily flustered at times if caught off guard. Above all, Vael is kind, and does not find pleasure in fun at the expense of others. He is fiercely protective of those he considers friends, sometimes to the point of being overbearing and heavy-handed. L I K E S ■ Danger. Vael is an unrepentant daredevil and enjoys seeking thrills, much to the occasional chagrin of his close friends. ■ Magic. Though not exactly a scholar, Vael adores exploring his magical talents. He has a notably unorthodox approach to spellcasting, favoring instincts and feelings over study. D I S L I K E S ■ Tyranny. Vael has little patience for those who impose their will on others, and is an especially vocal opponent of both the Syndicate and the Garlean Empire. ■ Forests. Having grown up in the desert, Vael dislikes abundances of plants and trees. He is prone to severe allergies and avoids pollen like the plague. H O B B I E S ■ Triple Triad. One of the card game's earliest adopters, Vael is a champion Triple Triad player with several tournaments under his belt. ■ Reading. Vael spends a great amount of his free time reading. He enjoys the fantasy novels of his youth, and has a not-so-secret penchant for trashy romance novels. S T R E N G T H S ■ Force of Will. Though not by blood, I'm Tatamo Tamo's son at heart." When Vael was abandoned by descendents of Autumn War refugees, a rare lalafellin family of Ala Mhigo took the young miqo'te in. Tatamo, young and unmarried, raised the boy as her own into his adulthood. Tatamo was one of the many Ala Mhigans who answered the Griffin's call, and perished at Baelsar's Wall. Rorotori Alatori(♥) - Adoptive Great Uncle Character's Thoughts: “What justice waits him? He’s got the gil to live out in a cushy excuse for a ‘cell’ for the rest of his days. The sultansworn protect self defense, and I’ve been defending myself for twenty years. No. I’m not giving him; not giving you the option.” Rorotori held Vael and his mother in grievous debt for two decades in exchange for their passage into Ul'dah following Ala Mhigo's fall. Vael worked for most of his life to pay his debt until the day that he was able to expose his uncle's nefarious undergound dealings, slaying him soon after. NON-FAMILY Natsuki Uematsu, exiled Hingan samurai. ($) - Employee Character's Thoughts: "I promise you that Natsuki will keep you safe. She's never let me down before." Vael helped get Natsuki on her feet after she found herself stranded and mortally wounded in Eorzea. Natsuki swore a life debt to Vael; to this end, he employs her at his business, Alatori Acquisitions, as a combat specialist and bodyguard. Vivisha Visha, runaway heiress. (♦) - Close Friend Character's Thoughts: "Vivi. Focus. She needs us. Think about how you create fire and ice. Turn it to positivity. Think warmth. Think sunlight, hugs, and refreshing dips in the lake. Give her that." Vael met Vivisha during his efforts to repay his debt, and the two became fast friends. After she helped free him from his uncle's iron grip, Vael intends to repay the favor by stopping her family's obsessive campaign to control her life by any means necessary. ROLEPLAYING HOOKS Places Places he has been, people he has met. ◢ Ul'dah ■ Vael was a common sight in Ul'dah, and his facial markings may be recognizable to frequent visitors of the city's bookstores and cafes. He is a former regular of the Quicksand ("before it got weird"), infamous among friends for never ordering any food other than Momodi's omelettes. ◢ Ishgard ■ Now hiding out in Dravania with his companions, Vael can be occasionally sighted in Ishgard and Idyllshire on supply trips. His striking facial features are quite recognizable to locals. ◢ The Immortal Flames ■Those that have worked closely with the Immortal Flames may know the mercenary for his exemplary service record against the Amalj'aa and local bandits. He also fought in the Eorzean Alliance's capture of Baelsar's Wall following the massacre of the resistance, as well as a number of battles in the campaign for Gyr Abanian liberation. Hobbies Vael's activities and downtime. ◢ Triple Triad ■ Vael is often seen at the Golden Saucer as a regular hotshot at the Triple Triad Tables. More frequent visitors to the Saucer might know that Vael suffered a fall from grace after a humiliating losing streak that kept him from the tables for months, marking him as a pariah to some. He has since begun working on a comeback, which may be known to regulars.. FFXIV is my latest love, and I would like to explore Vael as a character with as many contacts as I can so that he can have an enjoyable, procedural and communally created story. I thoroughly enjoy walk-ups and tells to initiate RP, and you can always consider the RP icon to indicate being in character. I am a paragraph roleplayer and prefer story-intensive play with a focus on character and relationship development. Personal RP Limits I am over 21 years old, male, and LGBT+ friendly. I do not and will not engage in ERP in any shape or form, and adopt a fade-to-black policy in the event of anything approaching it. Vael is not open to any romantic relationships.
