Appearance

(( WIP! )) Devereux stands tall and slender, but with lean muscle. He has long, pointed ears and a very stern face - often described as intense. His hair is a deep black and kept short, only about two inches long.

History

Devereux is not very close to his family. His father died when he was young (10), soon after his younger sister, Lilireux, was born. He has a soft spot for Lilireux, perhaps partially for that reason, and protected her fiercely during the Calamity. Their home in the Shroud remained (mostly) unharmed, and only made his family more reclusive, believing it was the way to survival.

Devereux, on the other hand, came to realize that there was very little he knew about the world. While his family was content to stay in their caves, living day to day off the land, he started to yearn to leave. With only knowing how to live off the land, very basic hand-to-hand combat, and picking the pockets of passersby, he made his decision to leave the caves. He asked Lilireux to join him, but she refused, wanting to stay with her mother and sister. It made him sad, but he pressed on.

His idealism was quickly shattered. He was bright-eyed and excited as he walked into Fallgourd Float, only to realize people were staring, and some people he tried to talk to wouldn’t even speak to him. It became apparent that because he was a Duskwight, he was looked down on.

Despite this, he refused to go back to his cave. He found odd jobs to do - if people would even let him - and bought a sword with his earnings, upgrading from his simple hunting knife. It wasn’t much, but it was a way to defend himself, and it opened the door to other jobs. He’s become fairly stable in the day-to-day life, but works hard to keep it that way.

Starting out, he took sketchier jobs, as they were the easiest to get. Being raised in caves, he was good at climbing and being quiet. The pay was good, too. Now he has the luxury of not picking up that kind of work (and thus not furthering stereotypes about his race), but on occasion, he takes one or two jobs, assuring the one employing him knows that if the job goes sour at all, he’s out.

Personality

When you first meet Devereux, he's polite enough to offer a smile and light conversation. He seems slightly uncomfortable at first, and wary, showing in his light sarcasm. Once he gauges whether a person is genuinely being kind to him is when he decides how to behave in turn. If they are kind, he relaxes a little, partaking in conversation. If they're looking for trouble, he doesn't hesitate to cut them off there and tell them to leave him alone.

Devereux is quite pessimistic. He became a closed book after a harsh dose of reality, and doesn’t let people in on his past or in on too much about himself. As a freelancer, it doesn’t benefit him to discuss himself anyway. However, he hides this fact too, behind that generally nice facade. Over time, he’s found that a “happier” - sometimes even "charming" - facade works best. People generally treat him a little better, but a part of him still believes he is being judged. (Once bitten, twice shy.)

He often keeps to himself, but he likes bars. He’s made enough to afford the occasional night out, taking to quiet, darker corners. He especially likes bars with live music. One of his fondest memories is of his younger sister’s singing when she was little, and how she once wanted to learn to play music. Part of him still wants her wish to come true, but his pessimism makes him doubt it ever will.

When alone or when he gets to know someone, he actually tends to be laid back. Oft times, he doesn’t bother to find an inn for the night, but instead makes camp in caves. It’s free and feels like home. He hunts his own food, selling the leftovers in town if he has too much or makes a big haul. He tries to be as independent as possible, though now and then he’ll visit his family.

Likes

★ Alcohol. His favorite drink is dark beer, but he'll indulge in mead once in a while.

★ Music. Particularly stringed instruments.

★ Rain, especially when listening to it from inside a cave. It makes him feel safe.

★ Kind people.

Dislikes

★ Daylight.

★ People, in general.

★ Spiders. (Ugh, yarzons.)

Areas of Expertise

Martial: Basic hunting skills, basic hand-to-hand and sword combat skills.

Crafting: Basic cooking.

Other:

Strengths

★ Rather laid back, once he gets to know people.

★ Despite his suspicion of people, he's a very good and loyal friend to those who get close enough to him.

★ His stubbornness, in some ways. He doesn't give up easily.

Weaknesses

★ Impatient.

★ Holds grudges.

★ Distrusting.

Other Notes

Miscellaneous

★ Devereux still has an easier time functioning at night, from his time in the caves. His eyes are sensitive to the sunlight.

★ He’s fairly neutral and rarely picks sides. It’s more that exerting the energy to invest himself in sides doesn’t interest him. (Unless it directly deals with him.)

★ In the occasion that he’s in a fight, he won’t back down. Devereux’s incredibly stubborn. In physical fights, he can get carried away, especially if it has to do with him being a Duskwight.

★ Things get to him fairly easily. He hasn’t learned yet to let things go. He tends to fume for a bit after an unpleasant encounter, though he hides it at the time.

★ Even though he’s bitter, alcohol actually makes him feel better. Not necessarily happier, but he lets go of things easier. (Perhaps it’s apathy, though.) He also becomes slightly more social.

★ He’ll never forget if someone’s been kind to him; but even then, he sees it as the rare exception. Likewise, he never forgets if someone was unkind, and has a hard time forgiving.

★ He’s afraid of dying alone.

Religion

★ Not particularly religious.

Quirks

★ When he grows impatient or irritated, he rubs his thumb along the side of his index finger.

★ He likes to read, but isn't a strong reader or writer.

★ He's never been out at sea, and is kind of afraid to be.

Equipment

★ Hunting knife.

★ Basic one-handed sword.

Rumours

The following rumours can be heard about Devereux, predominantly in Gridania. (If your character has an opinion about him, feel free to add it here.)

Common rumours

★ “Ah, ‘im? ‘e’s always in the corner of the tavern, keepin’ to ‘imself. Don’t bother nobody, though. Jus’ kind of sits there, wavin’ for another beer every once in a while.”

★ “I see him walking around town at night now and then... better make sure your pockets haven’t been emptied.”

★ “The Duskwight? He seems rather... pleasant, actually. He smiles when the barkeep brings him another drink, at least. Shares in a laugh or two. He looks intense otherwise, though, doesn’t he?”

Uncommon rumours

★ "Oh, that guy. I see him broodin' about here n' there. Usually in the evenin'."

★ "I saw him talking to some guys in the alley... They gave him a sack of coins. I'd keep an eye out around him. Who knows what he's up to!"

★ "Really? I saw him cleaning up the chocobo stables once. He was petting the birds, too. He can't be that bad."

Rare rumours

★ “Isn’t he that scraggy cave-dweller who got into a huge fight in Fallgourd Float once..? A man almost lost his eyes, I heard. I wouldn't go near that guy.”

★ "Yeah, I've seen him around. He was piss drunk once, mutterin' about his sister, and how he was gonna buy her a lute. Ain't ever seen him with anyone, though. Does he even have a sister?"
