Mayumi shiro
[edit]
Mayumi was born into a life of wealth, privilege and nobility. She wanted for nothing and for much of her youth was ever shielded from the hardships and the realities of life. From the moment she was old enough to walk, she ran. When she understood enough to know someone was telling her no, she disregarded and did what she pleased. This chaotic and rambunctious nature was met occasionally with amused and adoring glances from her parents but more often with frustration and desperate attempts to focus their wild child. Her father believed that providing her round the clock tutelage would temper her, that knowledge would compose her, philosophy and art would refine her. Much to his dismay this proved to be only half true as she simply ignored, avoided or outright skipped out on the lessons she had no interest in. She favored running off on what she called her adventures and belligerently refused to sit through any teachings that didn't catch her fancy.
When she turned seven her mother assigned her a handmaiden. A barely older than her hyur girl with flaxen hair would now accompany Mayumi through every moment of her day. Her mother believed that this handmaiden, Shinobu, would be able to better keep tabs on her only daughter and hopefully assist in instilling her with some modicum of temperance. Instead the girls became fast friends and a pair to be reckoned with all throughout Hingashi. It would not be unheard of for these girls to be found swimming the beaches past sundown or to be spotted climbing the tallest building they could manage for no reason other than to simply watch the ships come and go from the harbor. It wasn't until she was ten years of age that her father managed to find a tutor that would be able to appeal to Mayumi's apparent deficit of attention. A Miqo'te man named X'rhun Tia, in exile from Gyr Abania, found Mayumi to be an apt pupil in the fine art of swordplay, specifically fencing. Through the physical strain of learning the ways of the rapier this tutor would find tricks to get her to see things from perspectives she wouldn't otherwise. Where she found the dogma of thaumaturgy to be restrictive, the spiritual dedication of conjury to be too difficult to manage and the mathematics of arcanism to simply be too dull, she found a balance of magical talent in what her tutor would refer to as red magic. She often would make fun of such a ridiculous title but nevertheless took to the art with a passion that up unto that point she had not shown for anything else. Even after he left to seek out new pupils she followed a strict regimen and ever improved her skills. When she was thirteen her world would shatter and her mother, having suffered from an illness of the lungs, passed away. This was the first time Mayumi realized that the world doesn't cater to her whimsy, that forces were at work that caused suffering and pain and in most cases the harsh reality was that there was no choice but to simply accept it as fact and do what one could to move on. This shift in her understanding caused her to find her second passion, the art of healing. She took to studying the ways of the chirurgeon as zealously as she did to red magic and fencing. She was determined to help alleviate what suffering she could so that others perhaps didn't have to loose someone to sickness as she did. For the next four years her life revolved around growing her skills in her chosen passions but something else too would grow. Her friendship with Shinobu turned to love and the two would steal away as they once did in their youths though this time not to wreak havoc but to instead spend time simply being together. In these years Mayumi's father grew ever more distant yet strict. The expectations he placed upon the shoulders of his daughter weighed upon her significantly and she found her only solace in the arms of her handmaiden. Mayumi tried her best to be the daughter she believed she was expected to be. She did her best to tend her fathers needs and interests in regards to the family business. When he fell ill she stepped up without question to lead when he could not despite having no love or desire for the duty put upon her. When it became clear that her father was soon to pass into the lifestream she had thought herself ready and proven. To her shock and dismay her father had decided otherwise and instead of allowing her to take over in his stead, he arranged for her to be wed to the eldest son of a rival noble house and trade company. He lived just long enough to see her married and to ensure that she would be taken care of. The following year was one of pure turmoil for Mayumi. She balked at the very idea of being wed to a man she didn't know or choose. She returned to her more chaotic nature in response, she refused his affections unless she was so deep in her cups that she barely knew what she was doing. She kept to her room, her gardens and her training and would often sneak out to the city to partake in cheap wine enough to blur her mind so she could face the reality of what her life had become. Through all of this she would remind herself that she still had Shinobu, that there was a light in all this sudden and suffocating darkness. Some months after being wed she found herself pregnant thanks to an evening of too much saki and not enough sense. This pregnancy would take a toll and she became frail and ill. Throughout the illness her husband would visit her, sit with her just to show she wasn't alone. He would occasionally read to her, converse with her about what troublesome children they both were and in these few moments she found common ground with the man she never gave a chance to. Sadly the illness and effects of the medicines muddled her brain to the point of never quite remembering this part of things very clearly. When her daughter was born she remembered a new kind of happiness washing over her and found some resolve to overcome her illness no matter what. She struggled daily to fend off this mysterious sickness for both her sake and the sake of her child who had been born just as ill as she was during the pregnancy itself. Unfortunately the tiny child had no chance against the ravages of this ailment and not long past three months of life she slipped back into the lifestream. What happened next is all a dark, foggy blur. She remembers noises from down the hall, she remembers the cold at her chest and the struggle to breath. She rang her bell to summon Shinobu, this much she is certain of as the sound was loud and clear in her mind. No response came and feeling desperate for help she clawed, crawled and struggled her way down the hall to her husbands chambers. There she overheard voices, plotting, vicious voices. Words of poisons used to kill the father, the child and soon the mother. Words of alluring seduction, promises of shared wealth once the heiress was gone. In horror she realized the source of the voices, Shinobu and her husband! They were plotting her demise, been the cause of the deaths of her father and her daughter! With a strength born of rage and desperation Mayumi took to her feet and rushed into her husbands chambers. There she found her hands around the hilt of his blade and there she remembers clearly cutting him deep across the throat and once again along his face and down his back. She remembers Shinobu shrieking in terror and stumbling, then running out of the room. It dawned upon her how this seemed, she had struck down the lord of the house for no apparent reasons and she knew she couldn't fight off any guards that would respond, so she ran. She ran as fast as she could in a feverish state. She managed her way out of the estate and somehow into the night to eventually wind up on the doorstep of an elderly man who would nurse Mayumi over the course of a year back to health, who hid her from prying eyes and kept her safe. Once she was hale enough she found her way aboard a ship to lands unknown. She couldn't return home to Hingashi so instead she ventured to the lands her families trade company had visited. To the Azzim Steppe, to various imperial provinces, to Doma, even to Thavnair and Sharlayan before ending up in Gyr Abania. Once in Eorzea she wandered about without much purpose or reason, she helped where she could and took to a life of adventure being as free as the wind at her back. A life she found suited her, as long as she never took time to reflect too much on the past for all she had now was her future and her days were numbered. Despite her recovery the poisons that were used upon her had done their damage and she knew that she had but a few short years before she too would succumb as her father and daughter did before her. So now there is only this moment, this second to do something with before it is lost forever. Recently her memories of these events have come into question. She admits that things may not have always been as she recalls. She's found that her husband isn't dead and that she was never being hunted for his murder or assault but instead she was being searched for at his behest to return her home despite her attack upon him. She's begun the search for a cure and believes she's found two very important pieces of information that could lead to it but there are yet more to find before the clock stops ticking. For now and against her instincts and better judgement, she's agreed to play the part of the honorable wife at her husbands demand if for no other reason than to put together the puzzle and form a more clear and definitive picture of what happened in those tumultuous months. She'll not say it aloud but having access to her families wealth will most certainly help in the hunt for Shinobu and hopefully for the cure.
