Nuala is on the shorter end of Highlander height, just passing sixty-eight ilms, and has a slighter build than is oft associated with Ala Mhigans. Her hair is a dark blackish-blue, and is often assumed to be dyed that color. Her eyes are a light blue, with a faint film hinting a possible distant intermingling of Dunesfolk long ago, though it isn't something she'd bring up herself.
She is most commonly seen wearing a darkly colored robe, an heirloom from her birth parents, and a silver amulet set with a dark purple crystal. More often than not, she is also wearing spectacles, the result of too many late nights analyzing old texts by the dim light of a candle.

Biography

Nuala was born three years before the death of the King of Ruin, and has vague memories of her life in Ala Mhigo. When she was a toddler, Ala Mhigo was annexed by the Garlean Empire, and at some point during the exodus toward the Twelveswood, her father was slain, and she was separated from her mother during an attack by Garlean Conscripts. Taken in by a Midlander and Lalafell couple who knew her parents, Nuala began living in Ul'dah and was taught from an early age in Thaumaturgy.
Through her childhood and adolescent years, her life was uneventful, mostly spent studying aetherial currents and practicing Thaumaturgy. Things changed quite abruptly in the year 1572 of the Sixth Astral Era, as the Garlean Empire once again invaded Eorzea, and the lesser moon Dalamud began its descent toward Hydaelyn. After witnessing a shower of stars in the heavens, Nuala began suffering tremendous headaches and hallucinations, and during the Battle of Carteneau, her adoptive parents served with the Immortal Flames, and died with the shattering of Bahamut's prison.
During the aftermath of the Calamity, Nuala's headaches became less pronounced, and she came into possession of long forgotten texts that her adoptive parents had long kept hidden, even from her. She spent countless Moons scouring over the tomes by candlelight, reading the notes left behind. Things changed abruptly during the second year of the Seventh Umbral Era, when Nuala came across a key hidden within the binding of one of the books, emblazoned with the symbol of Azeyma, and what appeared to be a falling star, which she presumed to be some primitive symbol of Rhalgr. Soon after her discovery, one of the books she inherited from her parents was found, and in order to avoid the rest of the texts being lost to the archaic laws of the Order of Nald'thal, she bequeathed the remaining texts to a member of the Ala Mhigan Resistance who was returning to Little Ala Mhigo, where she would meet her in a few months time.
Confessing to the "crime" of possessing contraband that went against the teachings of the Order, Nuala accepted exile from the Order as "penance" for her crimes, and gathered up what possessions she could, and left for Little Ala Mhigo. Donning black robes that apparently belonged to her biological mother, she was approached by an elderly resident of Little Ala Mhigo, who mistook her for her mother, and after convincing the old woman to leave her alone, spoke to the presumed leader of the refugees, Gundobald. From him, she learned that the woman she entrusted the tomes to had been assaulted by members of the Corpse Brigade before reaching the camp, and while she escaped with her life, she had been robbed of her possessions, and virtue.
Leaving her discussion with Gundobald rather dejected, Nuala was approached once more by the elderly woman, but this time not out of a case of mistaken identity. The woman gave Nuala a sealed lockbox, left by her birth mother with the assumption she would be brought to Little Ala Mhigo at some point. On the small chest were the familar symbols of Azeyma and the falling star; after thanking the woman and sending her away, Nuala used the key she had found to open the box. Within, she found a silver amulet, set with a dark violet crystal. Unsure of why such a seemingly mundane object would have been so carefully hidden away for, Nuala cautiously placed the amulet around her neck, and felt a sudden surge of energies welling up within her.
Her head began to throb with pain, sudden whispers piercing her thoughts with promises of power unseen for over a millennia. In what could only be called a delirious state, Nuala left Little Ala Mhigo in the dead of night and walked to the camp belonging to the brigands that had assaulted her associate and stolen her things, and as the groggy members of the Corpse Brigade began to wake and circle around her, Nuala gave in to the whispers, and as her vision darkened, she felt a large surge of Aetherial energies flowing into her body.
When she awoke, she was in Little Ala Mhigo, sequestered from the view of the refugees and resistance fighters. Several dour faced Highlanders were with her as she rose from the cot she found herself in, a look of mistrust or fear in their eyes. She was told that when they searched for her in the morning, fearing another had fallen prey to the Corpse Brigade, she was found surrounded by the charred remains of what they assumed to be several members of the Corpse Brigade, in a circle of desecrated, lifeless earth. What remained of the loot stored at the camp had been returned to Little Ala Mhigo, but the members of the Resistance present were at a standstill debating whether whatever power she had used was something they should desire for use against Garlemald, or if she should be regarded as a criminal for what they presumed (somewhat correctly) to be forbidden magic. After some time had passed, she was allowed to join the Resistance, though she has never truly felt accepted by the group, regarded with suspicion by some, due to the destructive magics at her finger tips. Eventually, she was sent to help on the other side of Baelsar's Wall, where she might be kept under better watch.
