Biography

Childhood

Tahla was the second daughter to Sahn'to and Mahna Nelhah, the clan's Matriarch.

Though born second, Tahla was given express interest and attention by her mother, clearly hinting to favoritism. It earned the ire of her older sister, Tahna, and would spark a flame of loathing in her heart that would persist throughout their lives together. In spite of what animosity Tahna had towards her sister, she feigned just the right amount of love and affection to garner Tahla's trust, and strung the young girl on with the idea she genuinely cared. In reality, Tahla was nothing more than a pawn in the other Keeper's designs to secure her position as the future Matriarch. She had the lineage, the drive, the strength, and the support of the entire clan behind her, and Tahla was played expertly well into the grand scheme.

At the tender age of four, the sisters' mother passed in her sleep. Now lacking a maternal figure, Tahla's sister took it upon herself to take the young Keeper girl under her wing as her faux mother. Tahla clung to Tahna like a security blanket, and though Tahna would have sooner spat on her sister and cast her aside, she kept the young Keeper close.

Between ages four and five, Tahna had elaborated to Tahla the importance of knowing how to defend oneself. Where the childhood of many kids would consist of playing in fields and making friends, Tahla's consisted of grueling training unfit for a four-year-old. She struggled in learning the ways of wielding weapons, her diminutive build unfit for such labourous endeavours. Still she was pushed, still she was browbeat into attempting to learn and train, all under the love and concern for her well-being. Training went poorly, and Tahla was oft times met with a stern hand and swift discipline, but still she clung to the foolish idea that it was borne from love from her older sister.

On Tahla's fifth birthday, she stole away into the dead of night in hopes of exploring territory of the Shroud she'd not yet been to. The curiosity of a child is not something easily sated, and in spite of her tribe's vehement protests, she'd opted to disregard them and venture out. During her venture, she was spotted by three Gridanian hunters, out gathering their daily and nightly hunts to take back to the city-state, who took none-too-kindly to the Keeper's presence. They cornered the five-year-old Tahla. One sat on top of the small, hapless girl, pinning her to the ground, while a second roughly grabbed her jaw and forced it open. The third searched for the most jagged, coarse rock he could find, approached the helpless Tahla, and inserted the rock into her mouth. It pressed against her right fang, and the Gridanian began filing away.

"Time to defang the wild beast," he hissed, she vividly recalls. "We shall preserve nature's bounty for those who are becoming of it." Tahla shrieked in agony as the rock ground against her fang, pain bolting through every fiber of her being as the jagged stone slowly, and painstakingly dulled her once immaculate fang to naught more than a blunted fragment of what it used to be. The hunters were stopped only by the Keeper's sister, who had caught ear of her sister's lamentations. The hunters scurried back off to Gridania with what quarry they had gathered, leaving Tahla in a shriveled, bawling and quivering mess on the forest floor.

"This is why you needed to learn to defend yourself," her sister chided her, refusing to even offer a helping hand. "Get up, and let's go home." So Tahla, tail between her legs, forced herself to shaky legs and shadowed her sister home.
