Basic Info

Born to an unknown Tia and a young mother, Esther was surrendered at birth to an orphanage in the city of Ul'dah. She received her name from her caretaker, an elderly Hyuran. Despite her place of birth, she considers herself first and foremost a daughter of La Noscea. She is noted for her exploits as a fortune-seeking marauder, and for her distinguished service in the Maelstrom. Further, she lent her martial skills to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn in the campaigns to liberate Ala Mhigo and Doma, and continues to serve where able in the struggle against Garlean oppression.

Early Life

Though a citizen by fact of her birth within the city walls, she received little supervision or education in the orphanage, and was treated scarcely better than the city's many refugees. Poverty defined her youth. The philanthropy of the monetarists was sufficent only to provide unwanted children with a roof and a daily meal, and most were turned out onto the street by their 12th summer. Well before that, Esther learned to fight for her meals, as she soon learned that the meek did not keep what scraps they could scavenge for long. Motivated by the horrors of Ul'dan poverty, young Esther sought to pull herself from the depths of poverty, and by much effort convinced the guildmaster of the Weavers Guild to grant her apprenticeship.

For some years she labored tirelessly, working her fingers raw to spin thread from morning to eve, and later, weaving cloth. Yet her advancement was stymied for want of patronage by the wealthy, who saw little potential in a street urchin, and conspiracy of her peers and journeymen, who disdained her presence within the guild. Moreover, following the calamity, she abandoned the pursuit of weaving finery, spending weeks producing only bandages, clean rags, and garments for the survivors, using unwanted guild materials. For this, she was accused of theft by a fellow apprentice on the orders of a wealthy patron, in an effort to finally dispose of her. Such was her wrath at discovering this plot that she took up her shears and used them to cut apart the client's fine garments in the middle of the market street, all while cursing him to the seven hells for his greed and disregard for the needy. Her vitriol turned to all the gawking onlookers in turn. That very day, she cast aside her tools, took her meager savings in hand, and bought passage by caravan and then by sea to Limsa Lominsa, swearing never to return.

Though there was less coin to be had for weavers in good Limsa Lominsa, there was plenty of work for sailors, particularly for handy ones. Her skill mending sails won her favor with the crew of Bikke's Bounty. In battle, she was as surprised as any to find she was adept with the greataxe favored by Limsan boarding parties, and this swiftly earned her a place in the Marauder's Guild. From this, her life as an adenturer would begin, taking her to all corners of Eorzea in search of fortune.
