Biography

Far east of the Isle of Bekko, infant Blue Kojin emerge from the sands of their unnamed spawning shores. Small and susceptible to predation, they hatch from their eggs precocial. They waddle their way to the tide, letting the sea lap over them to offer them cover as they start their instinctual journey to underwater Kojin settlements, braving creatures of the deep that would seek to prey upon them. Until they come upon one of their scattered bubbles of civilization, nowhere is safe.

From a batch of eggs incubating in cooler sands of the Ruby Sea during later moons, a group of male Kojin hatchlings make their migration west of the Isle of Bekko, but only so many arrive at their eventual homes. The Blue collect the young - six in total - to take back to Tamamizu, where they are given names based off of mundane objects for soul incarnate and raised as clutchmates, though not as siblings. Their blood relations are even questionable. Still, the one named Saibashi cared little of this as he grew, harboring a deep respect for those that survived the perilous trip from an original batch of nine eggs.

Saibashi and his clutchmates were primarily raised by a group of crafters of whom spent their days shaping mother-of-pearl and gathering sea glass from the shores. The first two decades of Saibashi's life was peaceful, following in the footsteps of the martial masters of the village. His prowess with bladework combined with his wanderlust made him a formidable explorer, often dispatched with groups on hunts to add to the vault of the Pool of Tribute, far back when the Red and the Blue were one as brothers. Oftentimes, Saibashi was separated from his band, seeking out relics in dangerous areas that earned him a myriad of scars as well as trinkets from his searches. Though, for a series of disobedience, he was tasked with serving as a face of trade for Doma, escorting precious cargo and even weapons from the Red's forge. During his time, he only learned to pick up a new weapon - the flintlock - and begin his own searches for relics independently, particularly at what he believed was the calling of Susano in his prayer.

The call did not lead him down an unprofitable path. Saibashi learned the tricks of trade and the ways of the wild a decade later at Sakazuki, where the Confederacy would eventually be founded. Saibashi formed an amicable relationship with a group of Doman brigands during his hunt to acquire the comb of legend housing the amatsukami, Kushi-nada-hime. They had found success in the form of taking the comb from a many-headed serpent by the name of Yamata-no-Orochi, though barely escaping with their lives. The comb was promptly brought to the Pool of Tribute, however their victory and expected peace didn't last for long.

Garlemald was soon to take charge to Doma, eventually spreading their presence to the Ruby Sea over the next couple of decades. The Red and the Blue found themselves split; the former first to place themselves as mercenaries, shutting off access to the Pool of Tribute and taking the Isle of Zekki for themselves when their Blue brothers and sisters refused to follow. Saibashi was forced to return to Tamamizu, inevitably becoming separated from the treasure he'd spent so long to obtain for worship. He was only to learn that it was to be eventually 'relinquished' by the Garlean Empire when the Confederacy took back Isari from their grasp.

His search for the treasure had lead him aboard Garlean ships and through Garlean affairs of Kugane, even going to far as to having been hit by a boat himself. Still, the crack in his shell did nothing to deter his search for Kushi-nada-hime, even if he must travel far West to do so.

Personality

Attitude

Kojin live for quite some time, and Saibashi feels those years are best spent as the kami of revelry would will it; rejoicing in combat and profit. Though adverse to war (save if there is profiteering to be had), Saibashi finds virtually all battles as a mere contest, himself an aggressive opponent and a passive-aggressive ally.

Sociability

Despite his outgoing demeanor, Saibashi is hard to impress. To gain his respect as an ally takes time, specifically seeking those out with the same values as he. Chivalry? Irrelevant. To him, kinship is formed in the throes of hardship and a willingness to rise to the top.

Expressiveness

With his optimism is overbearing to some, Saibashi pays little mind to those that speak against him. A clash of opinions simply results in a challenge, especially if it can be handled through the glory of battle.

Notes & Trivia

  • Saibashi is a follower of Kojin tradition, worshiping kami that reside within consecrated treasures. Particular idols include Susano, an amalgamation of three kami in one vessel. One spirit emerged from the Ame-no-Murakumo, a blade of Kojin legend. Locally, Saibashi also observed a kami known as Kushi-nada-hime, descendant of a deity. She supposedly resides within a many-toothed comb, of which She transformed into before the Ame-no-Murakumo was retrieved from the tail of a legendary sea serpent.
  • In mannerisms and appearance, Saibashi is based off of the hawksbill sea turtle.
  • Though unseen by many, Saibashi has freckles.
  • Saibashi has a deep crack in the lower right part of his shell, sealed together by surgical steel pins and hinges. He has a metal weight on his shell that helps him dive, as he is afflicted by air trapped under his shell since it healed back from being hit by a Garlean boat's rudder.
