Character

♦ General

(This page is a work in progress!)
A refugee that has risen swiftly through the ranks of the Malestrom; first, as a courier and commissioned bounty hunter, officer, then a lieutenant overseeing a privateer ship. Since arriving in Eorzea she has known nothing but the navy, and plans to serve them for the rest of her days. Because of the difficulty many sailors had with pronouncing her name, First Lieutenant Kotokaze goes instead by Kota.

♦ Appearance

This Raen is incredibly small built, and while this causes most people to underestimate her--Narumi uses this to her every advantage. If you see glowing pink limbal rings eyeing you from the shadows, it's likely already too late.
Kota has wild red hair that she often pulls back into a braid when she's working, though it still barely contains it.
Across her belly, Narumi bears a grizzly scar from where she took Skyfwyb's axe during a brawl the two had.
Having grown up poor and in the company of sailors for the past 7 cycles, Kota is not one for owning many 'outfits'. She prefers tight leather when she's after a mark--as it does not hinder her sneaking--but when she's on deck or representing her Grand Company she will always don her pristine officer's jacket with pride and dignity.

♦ History

Kota's immediate family were a Raen clan that lived on the outskirts of occupied Doma. Her mother was a woman of finery so her father had to make sure he could go to town and get her the silks and sake she liked so much. Her father was a simple hunter and the best he could ever do was get game meat, furs and leather to sell. But he did his best and taught Narumi and her older brother how to hunt as well.
As her brother was a full 10 years older than her, eventually the job of hunting and overseeing the hunting fell to the siblings. On their trips her brother had no shortage of stories about scary Xaela that cannibalized their own young if they were born weak and slept with animals in caves. Meanwhile in town, her grandfather and grandmother would sell their wares in the marketplace.
One day when Kota's grandparents were in the city her grandfather bumped into a soldier. When he attempted to explain that he hadn't meant any trouble they mistook the 70 year old man's cane for a weapon and beat him to death in the street to assert dominance. When Kota's father and grandmother went to reclaim his body there was hardly a bone what wasn't broken. One horn was shattered to pieces and another hung loosely from his bloody corpse. All his valuables had even been picked from him. Including all the money they'd made all day for that market visit.
Kota's father bowed and scraped and thanked the Garlean soldiers for "allowing him" to reclaim the dead mound that was once his father, and left the city. It was that day Kota's father decided their money would no longer be spent on fine silks and drink. He would fund the construction of a ship in secret and get his family as far way from this horrible place as he could. Kota, her older brother and her father hunted like mad for the few years that followed and eventually got a small vessel of their own. As her father required deck hands, he conscripted his 20 year old son and 10 year old daughter to learn the basics of sailing with him.
When Kota was 12 years of age, they finally went. There was a blessing in sailing a ship so small. They were able to pass through Garlean occupied waters and the territories of pirates unnoticed. Kota's family as hopeful. Until something terrible happened. Distantly the moon seemed to grow sickly--the sky turned red and rough waters hit them like even the most practiced sailor had never seen before.
While Kota's mother screamed above the harsh winds and waves for her to retreat below the deck with her and her grandmother. Brave, foolish and never caring for her own safety; the tiny 12 year old rushed onto the deck with her father and brother to try and keep the ship sailing true, but as she did so a bolt of lightning crashed down onto their mast.
She couldn't remember if it was the shock of the bolt, the force of the wind, or the wet deck that caused it, but Narumi was thrown overboard, hitting her head on the side of the ship as she twisted in the waves. The next waking memory she had was laying in a warm dry bed surrounded by men in red coats. They all spoke in confusion and mild panic over the child in odd dialect of Eorzean that she could barely understand, but a tall man with dark skin that sat the nearest to her was kind and reassuring, putting his oversized jacket over her shoulders.
The Highlander navel officer spent the rest of their long voyage to Limsa taking care of their new guest when he wasn't busy. In the meantime the men taught the girl important things: how to swear, how to spit, how to sail and--occasionally, behind the back of their commanding officer--how to drink. But never so much the kid would be sloshed.
With no where else to go once they reached port, Kota was offered a simple job as a courier for the Highlander's messages and such, which he paid her an unreasonable sum for. He also offered her his bunk at the barracks while he was away.
Kota became well known as the Maelstrom's helper and errand girl for the next few years. Much beloved by the older folks and tolerated by the younger ones at the behest of her highlander guardian, whom she would wait for by the docks every day he was gone at sea. But on one voyage he never came back. Nor did the rest of his crew.
The Raen continued to go to the dock every day past when they were due to come home and found herself disappointed for some time. Eventually another ship visited the waters they'd been in and found the wreckage of their ship filled with holes. They'd been killed by a Seawolf Slaver and his crew.
Upon hearing the news Kota slipped into a dark place. She began drinking heavily when she could and starting fights in the Wench. One day she made the bold choice to steal a pirate bounty from the Maelstrom's wanted board.
Narumi wasn't a strong person by any means, but she was quick and sly and hard to notice. This would be her advantage. The Raen managed to stow away in a barrel on a pirate ship and busted out when she'd been transported on board. Once there and alone she busted out and found she was in a storage room. Beside her was a small purple... thing. She'd never seen a creature like him before but he was clearly being kept for illegal trade. Kota picked the lock and strapped the baby behemoth onto her back. And went to confront her mark.
She was able to catch him alone, knock him out, and drag him from the ship. Albeit awkwardly. With the mission completed she was ecstatic to receive not only pay but praise for bringing him alive to face justice. Kota and her new companion Goru began to work two jobs, courier and bounty hunter.
The Raen continued this trend until she was about 16 when something changed her. She was on a job to find a man who was wanted for potential dealings with the pirate who'd killed her Highlander guardian. She couldn't pass this up in a million years. Kota was able to track him to where he'd made port and went to "rest" for the night. When she snuck into his room through the window she was appalled to find the man fornicating with a girl at least three years younger than herself who was branded with the sigil of the Seawolf Slaver who'd sunk The True Journey.
The shrill sounds of the little girl's crying caused something in the Raen's mind to snap, and before she even had time to place a calculated shot she kept from the window onto his back and stabbed a paralyzingly arrow just to the left of his spine and snapped it off so the head remained stuck there. She threw the now helpless man onto the floor beside the bed where the girl still lay. She couldn't kill, but he needed to suffer. The Raen took her hunting knife from her side; and in her rage, began to saw off the flesh from the top of his head.
It was simple. She was good at this. It was like skinning an animal like was her job in her homeland. The man screamed at the top of his lungs until he foamed at the mouth and passed out from pain. Kota only came to when the little girl beside her called out in between sobs, "Stop it!"
Narumi looked down at her trembling, bloody and hair covered hands. In that moment she was the monster. The Au Ra threw a sack full of money at the girl and gave her the assailant's shirt off the nightstand, demanding she flee to one of the Maelstrom's headquarters in any of the nearby towns.
After bringing the man to justice he was questioned about his involvement with the pirate slaver and promptly hung thereafter. Kota tanned the scalp to leather and kept it in a chest as a reminder of her own savagery.
She had decided that that would be the legacy of her justice; and before she would finally meet the killer of her guardian, she would fill that chest with the scalps of pirates and wicked men full along the way.

♦ Behavior

Kota is a very difficult person to get along with. She's blunt, loud, drinks too much, speaks Eorzian in a horrible dialect and isn't above punching someone in the face if she thinks they've earned it. Thus is the plight of children brought up by sailors. But she's also fiercely loyal, just and empathetic. Bound by her honor, Kota will never turn away from a person in need of her.
Every now and again, Narumi becomes incredibly homesick. She alleviates this by drinking Sake and playing her shamisen.

Friends

💑 Skyfwyb Aergankawyn - Skyf was originally one of Kota's bounties that she was to bring in, but because of her size, power and difficult base to infiltrate, she had little luck taking her quickly. This was compounded by the fact that the pirate almost never went ashore anywhere aside from her cove. The Au'ra would hit the cove with constant guerilla-style attacks every chance she got. Eventually, Skyf just got used to having the Raen around with the two of them fighting all the time. Through a series of odd circumstances, the two became romantically involved--albeit secretly. When two of Skyf's ships in her fleet were sunk and she was arrested for piracy she was given a choice: become a privateer or hang. Putting pride aside for the sake of her lover, the Roe lowered the black flag for a red one--now the two fight for the same side and even occupy the same vessel.
J'edite Shedai - Jet comes from the desert. A place that, as a Doman sailor, Kota doesn't understand very well. The two met in the Drowning Wench where they got into a drinking contest that spanned several bells. Kota loved hearing about Jet's monster hunting, while the Seeker was thrilled to learn about pirate hunting. Narumi may have drunkenly promised the use of Skyf's ship to J'edite should she ever need to fight sea monsters. Hopefully that doesn't make her too mad.

Acquaintances

E'kari Sol – Narumi met this Seeker while she was running a caravan through Costa and was attacked by highwaymen. Too nice for her own good, E'kari didn't even seem to be aware the men were trying to rob her. Kota dashed in and fought back the group, choking out their leader. When all was said and done, the Raen accompanied the Seeker the rest of the way to her destination. Since then Kota has always gone to "The Alchemist's Alley" for her and her stationed vessel's medical needs.
Kaiya Ailbhe - This Keeper was responsible for the tactical operation that got Skyf arrested. Unfortunately, as the bounty hunter that had spent the most time observing, Kota was called upon to take part in this attack as well. Though the circumstances of their meeting were poor, Kota looks upon the tactician with respect. After all, generally the Maelstrom and the Arcanist's Guild have a very positive working relationship.
Nyscera Alarone - Nyscera was the first Xaela that Narumi had ever gotten to know personally. And while she was apprehensive at first,,it didn't take long to find that she was not a cannibal like her brother's stories always promised. Kota has begun learning to hone close range combat from this seasoned ninja.
Bennett Cooper - The adopted son of Nyscera. He seems to be a pretty skilled fighter for himself with a varied array of skills and interests. A while back Bennett's mother was killed by Skyf. Kota deeply regrets not being able to stop her, and bears a scar from the attempt.
Zazkiny Zinky - Small, fiery and a little rude, Kota sees a lot of her self in this lalafell. Narumi has offered to take Zinky along with her as an apprentice bounty hunter to show her legal ways she can use her flame aspected aether to help people. Maybe one day Zinky will join the Maelstrom?

Disliked

Zirnwilf Keltmerlsyn - Captain of The Wailing Siren and the man who sunk The True Journey navel ship. His trade is in raiding, plunder but mostly in the capture and trade of slaves. He favors miqo'te or au'ra women, which he brands with the sigil of his flag and traffics. Despite his reputation being grand, he's incredibly hard to track down; especially because no enemy that has encountered his ship has gone unsunk. Kota has her eyes on bringing him in for the murder of Captain Armstrong. What the Raen doesn't realize is that her own actions have not gone unnoticed.
