Introduction ↠
The woods are a hungry place. In winter the trees are stripped down to their dead, grey integuments, and the deer that haunt the clearings teethe at their bark as the season grows hungry, and leave the birches naked in ragged bands across their midsections like pale gut-wounds glowing in the night.
It’s this strangely northern clime that her ancestors clung to, driven to the edges of their kind’s temperate territory. Here, they cover themselves in furs and leathers up to the throat, down to the wrist. The pads of their soles are accustomed to the wet bite of snow. They pray to strange gods under moonlight.
She’s dog-faced, and her long, canid nose queerly mobile as it sniffs, sneers; but her eyes are sad as a cur’s. Queer totems and amulets are woven in between the pale strands of her hair, her face smudged with coal-markings through which her eyes peer out. She has the starved, huge-eyed look of a lone wolf.
She’s knelt by a stream and lapping from it like a dog, a bundle of dirty leathers nestled between the hunting bow and the staff strapped to her back. Among her own people, she was a hunter, a shaman, and a mother, but she has drifted south, and lost her way.
The bundle at her back wakes, and begins to wail.
Inari is a nocturnal hunter estranged from her tribe. She says she left to look for her brother, and that her mother waits to welcome her back, but the sunken dark around the whites of her eyes speak of something else, something that haunts her in this world and the next.
